First of all you need to unlock the phone either through HTC Dev (details in the flashing guide link below) or by switching to s-off and then unlocking. You can't backup the firmware (boot etc.) or the recovery but you can backup the stock rom before flashing a new recovery and rom.
There is a guide here which walks you through the unlocking (using HTC Dev method), flashing recovery and rooting and this thread shows how to s-off your device. If you use s-off to unlock the device then in the rooting guide just jump to the flashing recovery section and continue from there.
If you're new to flashing, rooting, etc. and/or you don't understand the above terminology then you need to do plenty of research through these forums and google so that you understand the consequences of what you're doing and the associated risks.

I would backup /system by doing a nandroid backup via TWRP or CWM. From what I understand you don't need to flash a custom recovery to do this. You boot a custom recovery using adb with your phone connected to the computer. adb boot recovery recoveryfile.img
You can backup hboot, boot and recovery using the dd command. I think you need to be rooted to use dd.
Sorry for the vague information but I don't have an htc one yet. I'll be getting it next week. I know there is a way to do a full backup. There are all these dumps of GE phones and yet nobody is saying how they do them.
Once I get my phone and figure it out I'll write up a guide. I may even put together a fancy program to do it all.
Thanks to both of you... I'll research more and do this with calm and caution...

hey,
I'm a newbie over here! but i do know basic flashing of ROMS and recoveries and zips. I have a htc one 801e. and i think i bricked my phone. i was running android revolution HD 12.0 (4.2.2 ROM). i successfully unlocked my bootloader, rooted it, and flashed the latest CWM Touch recovery and even achieved s-off and Super CID through revone. i also have set up the ADB on my mac. (I am a MAC USER btw). I was having alotta GPS problem lately and so i decided to wipe my data, relock and re-root. (as i tried everything possible with the GPS problem, but to factory reset to stock RUU and re-root the device once again.) but sadly, in the process, I wiped off all the partitions, even the system partition. I tried rebooting many times but i cannot go past the Boot animation. obviously cus i wiped everything. i dont have anything on the sd card as well. I am just left with a bootloader now. (relocked bootloader. i tried fastboot and adb commands and mistakenly relocked it.) and a CWM touch recovery. i cannot access the storage on my phone. please someone help me? what can I do now to unbrick it? im on a mac! please? any help would be appreciated! :crying:

Hi there!
I've just switched over from iPhone to android and want to root my HTC One. But before I do that, I would first like to make a backup of the stock ROM and stock recovery (if I want to go back to stock later because of service, selling the device and so on).
When i searched the web i found this guide. The guide mentioned that you could boot TWRP through "fastboot boot recovery.img" without flashing the recovery and then make a nandroid backup of the entire stock system (with the recovery included).
But when i tried doing it through fastboot the boot loader frooze and i had to restart the phone. How do i make a backup of the stock ROM and recovery if i can't do it like described in the guide?
I know you should be able to install an RUU if you wan't to go back to stock but i run a carrier branded phone with a CID that has no available RUU's...
I currently run Stock HTC Sense ROM and recovery with a unlocked bootloader through htcdev.com.
So how do i make a backup of the stock recovery and ROM, I would really appreciate all possible answers and theories!
Thanks for the reply!
You can install TWRP and backup your stock ROM, and for the recovery what you can do is download an OTA update from somewhere around here on the forums, extract it and you will find the stock recovery inside it and you can flash it easily the same way you flash TWRP using fastboot but what I dont know is if you have to find an OTA for your carrier branded phone or the recovery isn't affected by carriers, I hope someone can answer this question!

Yes i also wonder if you have to find a specific OTA for your specific phone or if the recovery is "universal" for all different versions. My CID is H3G_G04 which seems to be a specific version for the operator three (3). I have not been able to find any RUU's or OTA's for that specific CID.
It would be awesome if anybody could answer this!
Thank you

If it's a new phone and has hboot 1.54 then you can't boot into recovery through fastboot as HTC have blocked this. You will have to flash recovery and then do your backups. There are plenty of sources around for the stock recovery if you require it later.

Is there any other way to extract a recovery from my phone? I can not find any RUU's or OTA's for my specific CID. It's almost like it didn't exist...

Recovery seems to be universal. Someone posted that they used this stock recovery to restore back to stock and get an OTA:

You can't backup stock recovery if you don't have S-Off.

So this it is not possible?
someone i asked told me this:
"Boot cwm via adb fastboot (fastboot boot recovery.img) then backup rom (which is stock) then flash the custom recovery"
can this not be done? Thanks..

Yes, you can backup your stock rom with CWM or TWRP, but not the recovery. Recovery and rom are two different things.
Do you mean it's possible to boot a custom recovery without even unlocking the bootloader via HTCdev, i.e. without losing the whole /data filesystem? If that's the case and you haven't unlocked yet, would you mind creating a full backup along with /data and posting it somewhere? I'd really like to know what's missing in the backup I made after unlocking.
Also, it might be possible to read the recovery image from its partition using dd within a custom recovery. I know no specifics, though, and it's just a guess anyway.

You can follow nkk71's guide in my signature.
If you don't want to go completely back to stock just to get OTA you can flash this Guru Reset 4.19.401.11 in TWRP. In Aroma just select stock recovery and radio, when you reboot you will have stock recovery, stock rom. To get the OTA updates, you will have to relock your bootloader. You can use this command in bootloader/FASTBOOT USB:
Code:
fastboot oem lock

Thank you so much! i searched a lot for my versions reset tool. Just one last question. When i update my firmware and OS now and make a nandroid backup, will that nandroid help me revert back to stock after i have rooted my phone again?

Yes, it will make it a little easier. You will need to make the nandroid backup the first thing when you boot into recovery the first time before you root the phone. Save it to your computer for future use. If you are able to get the stock recovery from the firmware you can use it with your nandroid backup to get you close to stock. You would flash the stock recovery with the same commands as you flashed the custom recovery.

Awesome! Thanks again!
My phone is not rooted (in case that make a difference on what method should be used in this case)
I would like to make a full image backup of the phone, factory-reset it, and then re-image it from this backup at a later date.
What is the best method to do the full backup (image) and later restore for a non-rooted phone?
Thank you
You can temporarily boot to a custom recovery like TWRP easily with Nexus root tool kit.
Advanced Utilities - Launch - Fastboot Boot - Custom Recovery
and make a nandroid backup.
I think you need to have your Bootlocker unlocked though....
From a very quick and unscientific Google scan it looks as if pure1water is right - you'll have to unlock your bootloader, which means YOU'LL WIPE YOUR PHONE!!!
(Just making sure... )
To install TWRP you don't need to be rooted.
There are lots of guides, so I won't repeat the detail. You can use Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit (NRT) to set up your PC/laptop drivers so that you can use ADB.
Developer options/enable USB debugging/reboot to bootloader/temporarily fastboot TWRP (or install it permanently, since you'll be using it to restore)/take TWRP backup/copy to PC for safety.
It's well-known that XDA doesn't really approve of NRT when used as a way to circumvent knowledge. Use it for the driver setup, then read a great deal about how to do these steps that I've skipped quickly over above. That way you'll be able to recover when (not "if") you make a mistake and get a bootloop without asking panicky questions in the forum.
to install twrp for a one time use only..
fastboot boot recovery recoveryname.img
to install twrp permanently..
fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img
If you bootloader isn't already unlocked I think the best you can get is backing up your apps and app data with helium..
It wont be nearly as good as a full TWRP backup but will be able to get a lot of stuff backed up.
I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but just so you know there is at least a little bit of backing up you can do without root or an unlocked bootloader to boot or flash twrp.

I can't figure out why anyone who knows enough to worry about full phone backups wouldn't have unlocked the bootloader on their Nexus 6 as the very first order of business.
But if you haven't unlocked the bootloader (which will wipe your phone), then the best you can do is to root it, install Titanium Backup, and do a full backup Apps+data. That's not as good or nice as a bootloader level backup, but will get most of the job done for a restore.

Don't you need to have your bootloader unlocked before rooting though?
