[ADVICES] Recommanded Voltages with Custom Kernel - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everybody!
I've installed ElementaryX Kernel and like a lot of people i'm trying to increase battery life by undervoltage the CPU But The question is not how to do it because there is a lot of guides about the subject.
Undervolting test can take long long time before finding the good one so my question is if you have a custom kernel, what voltage did you configure?
Cause on the guides that I found they just tell that if the phone is unstable or reboot alone that's a sign that the CPU is not enough powered. Do you know other signs?
I've choose 750 Mv during the Aroma installer of ElementaryX but I think I need Kernel Tuner to modifiy the voltage no? For the moment I'm at 850mv from 384Mhz to 702 Mhz.
What's your recommanded voltages for the HTC one?
Thanks a lot for your Help !

Search in or try asking for recommended settings in the ElementalX thread.

The recommended voltages are the stock ones.
If you're lucky, you can undervolt, but each device is different. Instability is the only way to tell.
I'm not sure why you are expecting different answers.

Mine starts at 750mV for 384MHz and increases 25mV for each step. I have no issues with it.
For more thorough testing, set all cores to the same min and max freq and run some benchmarks or something for half an hour or so. Lower the voltages a bit and run the benchmarks again. Repeat until it's no longer stable. Raise the freq to the next step and repeat the tests. Use my voltages as a guideline. Happy testing

[Q] OC/UV settings for battery life

hi guys,
does anyone have a tried and working UV values for best battery life? I don't want any more performance, so I'm not looking for OC, but perhaps any idea what UV stays stable?
Well, it's easy the higher you OC, the more it will drain your battery. As for UV, I can't tell because the voltages are different for every device, Rom and kernel...
Sent from my LG-Stone from the Prehistory...
Nahh... Just kidding!
CM 7.2 Koboltzz KANG
IronKernel 32MB
Usually undervolting -50mv for each speed will work for most devices, although its not recommended to decrease that much for speeds below 800mhz since it will affect your phone's wake up speed.
And tegra 2 cpu controller only supports minimum of 770mv, going anyway lower than this value will not have any effect.
My advice, try UV -25mv for 500mhz, and the rest above is -50mv. Some o2x can go -100mv, but you need to be lucky to own such device.
Cheers!
Mine is working perfectly on -75.
But when i go to -100, soemtime freezes device, so i use -75 regularly.
trying -50 across the board now, seems to run stable.
brw, how does lower voltage hurt the speed?
I can't really explain clearly since I do not know the technicals, but from what I read in xda, it will affect your speed, meaning 1.2ghz running at undervolted setting will not run the same as at stock voltage. Maybe its an efficiency issue, I do not know.
I thing that i experience, If you undervolt too much the few lowest clock steppings, you sometimes might not able to wake the phone from sleep because there is not enough power to wake it up.
I hope my explanation help you a little, and hopefully someone with more experience can give you a better explanation.
using -25mv ate 1.1ghz and 1ghz, -50mv at 800 Mhz, and -100mhz (750Mhz so its 770mhz because hardware limitations) on all other frequencies!
-50 mv is the limit for the device don't use below -50mv. but it dependes on your device. mine cannot UV it always gives me SOD i think my hardware phone is crap

When did you buy your phone?
I have one of the 10 first phones sold in Sweden and I cannot undervolt mine at all.
Just wondering if there's any correlation between manufacturing time and UVability (yeah I just made that word up).

I run with 1100.. good compromise between speed and battery life i think

[Q] Overclocking the Tab

Hey does someone know the overclock configuration that was posted on the Overcome page once? I'm running on Overcome 4.1 with the belonging Kernel which allows me to get to 1.6ghz (theoretically) and I'd like to overclock to 1.2ghz.
I'd be very grateful if you could help me
Edit: I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036020 but does this guide also apply to Overcome 4.1?
Just use Voltage Control or SetCPU. It's really not that hard at all. Just be careful with your voltages-overvolting will eat your battery more but may allow you to reach higher frequencies, and undervolting may get you better battery life but may make your tab unstable.
As a reference, I have my Tab running at 100-1.4 with smartassv2 and stock voltages on the Overcome 4.0 kernel.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
thanks ;-) but which sheduler do you use?
for those who also have problems with overclocking and for
the newbies (like me =-D) I found this page which describes the usage of shedulers
and governors http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19846297
IO Scheduler: CFQ
Governor: Smartassv2
At least that's what I use on my phone. I just left everything alone on my tab.

thanks, you helped me a lot ;-)
I'm using Voltage Control on 1.3ghz with stock voltages on smartassv2 and deadline and it runs pretty stable
Thanks, useful tip for me too.
I use SetCPU
OC max 1.3GHz, min 100MHz
-75mV from 100Mhz --> 1.0GHz and then -50 from 1.0GHz to 1.3GHz
PLUS various profiles to set max to 800MHz whilst screen off etc etc
that's exactly the same that I did =-D=-D=-D
That's pretty much what I have. OP, sorry I couldn't answer your PM, my tab is currently bricked and I haven't had the chance to recover it.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
yea I have time =-D that's not so important, just make sure your tab runs again ;-)

This is what worked for me as well, just don't check"set at boot" option till you've tried that speed for a few days and you config proves stable.

Haha, I did check that option when I foolishly set the OC max to 1.6GHz
...I was just able to uninstall between one of the many lopping reboots
Anyway all, sorted now. In fact I have reverted to stock voltage for 1GHz up to 1.3GHz because playing Trial Xtreme2 would cause a reboot when I'd exited the game - seem's all ok now *touches wood*

Undervolt/Overclock Captivate...

What kind of success/failure are people having with overclocking and undervolting?
I'm doing this through ROM Toolbox Pro. Is there a better way? I'm a n00b with some of this stuff.
I have the phone overclocked to 1200mhz and all cpu levels are undervolted by 100mV.
Im doing so to get more performance, and better battery life. Just wondering what settings everyone else is using.
Also I'm using CM 10.1, with the BlueMint Theme.

Every phone has different limits. It's just like PC overclocking, no two CPU/MB/RAM combos are exactly the same. In general most of Captivates will handle 1200 step OC with default voltages. Not too many will handle 120% live OC though. It doesn't matter what tool you use to OC. All tools try to play with the same kernel settings. In my experience UV saves very little battery but increases significantly the chances to get stability issues. This is why I never play with UV. My particular phone can do 1400 step OC or 1200 live OC with 1350mV. I run it on 1200 step OC @ default. Also, keep in mind that different ROMs/kernels give different OC results.
RE: undervolt
I agree with Val D that undervolting will not show any significant benefits. Overvolting has helped me with stability while overclocking. I use the free Voltage Control app for voltages, or the free NStools app. Rom Toolbox is a great app too- I use it for many other things- stick with what works for you. Currently I am running at 1200Mhz step, at 120% Live OverClock to get CPU up to 1440Mhz, and ARM voltage of 1350mV at that 1200Mhz step. Rock solid. Battery life suffers a bit, but I run this way for gaming. Day-to-day regular usage I just set to 1400Mhz step and no Live OC, default voltages. I have run fine in the past at 1500Mhz, no Live OC. Overclocking the CPU tends to make my phone a bit snappier and more responsive. A big battery drain that affects my phone is an app such as Gmail running in the background, or leaving wifi enabled when not in use. Setting the phone to Airplane mode has been a big battery helper too (I do not make any voice calls on this phone anymore). Governor and scheduler setting can also have a big effect on battery life. I searched for this post I made a while back that linked to two great articles on studies of battery life and voltages, and ended up reading through them again:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28141250&postcount=1194
Great information. Edit: just figured out how to link articles in my signature.
Thanks guys. I know each one over clocks differently. Just looking for some rough outlines. Thanks for the links. I'll be reading up on those. I have extensive computer over clocking experience, but on e phone its a whole new ball game. Basically trying to make this phone last longer.
I'll have to learn what live OCing is vs step OCing.
Thanks again!

Overclock GPU HTC One

Hi, I've installed ElementalX on my One and it allows a maximum GPU clock speed of 450 MHz, but I read on the Internet that Adreno 320 GPUs can reach frequencies of 500 or even 600 MHz... there is a way to enable those frequencies? Maybe a tweak or another kernel?
The s4 clocks all the way up to 627mhz via custom kernel. So. It's possible

I know that's possible, but I want to know how, lol.
There's a reason it isn't enabled. Don't even attempt this unless you want to melt the insides of your phone at worst case, or even in best case suffer from extreme heat and reduced battery life.

Man, heat isn't a problem for the One. HTC tests it at high temps. Mine for example is running at 2.16 GHz for a few months and I didn't have any problems at all... I reach high temps only when I play heavy games (max battery temp was 56.5 ℃)... The only important thing is that battery never reaches 60 ℃ which is the max safe temp for a Li-ion battery.

You have wrong information. Heat is a problem for all electronic devices. You will certainly shorten the life of the electronic components not only the battery if you keep them hot for extended periods. The reason the One has an aluminum case (besides aesthetics) is to help dissipate the heat from normal use and keep the device running for longer periods as well as extending the life of the battery.
Bumping up the max frequency doesn't mean the device is working at that frequency all the time. Specifically for a powerful device such as the One, it will only drain your battery faster.
Well I don't care of battery life... And the day I will notice problems I will go back to stock frequencies... So my question is: is there a way to OC the GPU to 500 or 600 MHz?
I will make a zip which does it okay? Do NOT complain when it blows up

Not necessarily. Faux oc'd the N4 GPU to 600mhz and no one made complaints due to the thermal throttle throttling the chip...QC and faux's implementations prevent excessive overheating.

Just for do some tests... And phone will not fry... The N4 and S4 have been OC'd to 600 MHz witouth any problems!
EDIT: I've tried to change the file but it resets to kernel value (450 MHz)... so the only solution is waiting for Matt's zip...
P.S.: Matt, can you make 4 zips? One for 500 MHz, one for 550 MHz, one for 600 MHz and one for 620 MHz? Or can you let me choose one of those 4 frequencies directly from a single zip? Thanks in advance.

Matt can you also make a zip wich unlock a CPU frequency of 2.3 GHz? Now I'm on faux123 kernel and max frequency is 2106 MHz (on ElementalX was a bit higher, 2160 MHz)... So I want to try a CPU clock of 2.3 GHz and a GPU clock of 620 MHz... don't worry I keep temps monitored and I will downclock if phone gets unstable.
@shahkam: Sure, I'll keep you posted!
Hi,
It won't work with just a zip file, the GPU freq (like the CPU freq) is hardcoded in the kernel, if you want test an higher overclock you need to compile your own kernel... It won't work just by editing a file... Try by yourself modifying the value in the path you find LOL, and there is not only this path (/sys/devices/platform/kgsl-3d0.0/*** and a few others)...
The values you'll find in certain paths are just some values matching what was hardcoded in the kernel (for to do simple).
If it was too easy to just edit some files for overclock, why devs need to compile a kernel with overclock possibility???
If some GPU/CPU freq are not available in the kernel (by the kernel dev) you cannot set them without recompiling by yourself the kernel to add some extra GPU/CPU steps.
Plus the kernel devs here have tried GPU overclock above 450 Mhz and the result was worse performance, lag, etc... Something due to memory bandwitch or memory bottleneck... I don't remember exactly...
In fact the SIV can have higher GPU overclock with the same GPU as our but the "stuff" arround is not the same. Unless a dev find the solution.
But you'll never see GPU overclock in our One above 450 Mhz just by editing some files, trust me.

LOL, good luck!
In the path you find, for max_gpuclk (and find all the others paths related to the GPU clock, good luck here too ) change the value by yourself with a file explorer like Root Explorer (edit the file) it will do nothing!!! Same thing for the other values!!!
I think you don't understand what I wrote or how all the kernel stuff works...
You need to compile your own kernel or recompile the kernel... and add the available GPU freq you want, but it's not too easy as just add a 600 Mhz step when you developed your kernel, what about voltage, memory allocated, other config files needs to be modified to match all your modifications, etc...???
It's infinite more complicated than you think...

I know that the values cannot be changed by a file manager... but it was Matt who said that it's possible with the zip... If it isn't possible can you help me recompiling a kernel?
by flashable zip, I meant I was going to compile the kernel for you ^^ But yeah the S4 has DDR3 memory so that could be the 'bottleneck' mentioned. This would be a lot of effort for little result.

Will do but it may be done in the next month, Thanks for your suggestion.
First of all THANK YOU for spending your time on this and sharing your result with us!
Just flashed the kernel! Good news...nothing is bricked
CPU Spy Plus indeed shows 1836 Mhz used! I did´t do anything for that.
You might re-think this. Using 1512Mhz instead by default and let the users choose that high speed CPU mode themselves as it may not be stable on all devices.
That 324Mhz added is a huge step...there is no step in between possible?
What about voltages. Did you modify anything? Is the voltage raised to achieve the high cpu frequency? Please post some more information about what happens here...
In fact I´m just running Antutu to see general stability on my device.
VERY BAD score. Before your kenel there were 20300 points. Now with OC only 19746.
=====================================================================
EDIT: Just recognized.... several questions are being answered by Antutu CPU Master.
1512 IS USED by default!
1620Mhz and 1728 Mhz are there to choose and of course finally the 1836Mhz.
Scaling is interactive by default (changed to my fav ondemand)
I/O Scheduler is cfq by default (changed to my fav noop)
Antutu Score @ 1836Mhz: 16077Mhz ???
Lower than without OC? Needs retesting (14230 point when setting max to 1836Mhz and Min to 1512Mhz(!!!???)...maybe the benchmark is wrong...Will give it some time to see if I myself feel a speedup.
After Restart Antutu Score ends up @ 19761 points...not bad. but clearyl not enough looking at the massice OC done. REBOOT! Tab just rebooted! So 1836Mhz is not stable at mine! Trying 1728Mhz now instead.
18139 points....this kernel lacks some serious power if we can believe the scores of antutu. This is a V0.1 so nothing to worry too soon. You´ll make it find it´s power
Switched back to kernel from pulser_g2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2444452) and 19908 points without any OC! You may look into it.
But please answer the other questiones I wasn´t able to clear myself.

Sorry for my late,
I've tested Antutu with 1512MHz and 1836MHz. For my Tablet Z, I got ~20000 (1512MHz) and ~23000 (1836MHz).
My Tablet Z has fast binning CPU. Can you please tell me which binning your CPU is? Thank you!
hard to tell...did taht thing in Terminal emulator....it tells me "1".
Not fast or slow or anything...

Greetings
Rodger

Don´t know....after the disastrous performance of the first release I of course switched back to stock.
Now there is the new version which does not cut performance in stock mode.
I´ll OC now to 1728 Mhz and see how it performs with that....battery life is not really good with stock so if you are already asking...FORGET ABOUT alternative kernels not optimized for battery.
That is why I don´t use CM oder AOKP on my Note1. I just eats the battery for breakfast....
OK OC just seemed to scale...20300 points (ca. 19300 at stock speed)...trying 1836 Mhz now.
17389 points....clear drawback....possibly because my device seems to have a bad CPU from what I´ve learned....wanted to use the 17xx Mhz anyway....oops....device just rebooted....my device just isn´t capable of the max cpu setting. :crying:
Anyway the working 1728 Mhz working is great news!
Will give it further testing...
I have two APQ8064 devices, Nexus 4 and Tablet Z. Nexus 4 is 0 (slow), it will reboot sometimes even on [email protected], the Antutu would force close and red light of death would happen if you ignore it and attempt to run again. While my Tablet Z is 2 (fast), this can run at [email protected] and got 23XXX in Antutu.
I don't have an idea which frequency can the 1 (nominal) APQ8064 clock at, but I think [email protected] will be OK. Also, keep eyes on the CPU float-point section in Antutu. At 1512Mhz, it is around 2000. At 1836MHz, it is around 2200. If this drop lower, just pull up the voltage BUT NOT TOO MUCH!!!

Raising voltage is not an option to me. But anyway...which app do you use for that on tablet Z?
What App do you use for cou control?
I use No-frills. Do you change "interactive" and or "cfq"?
Numbers right after reboot and stopping some unused apps...just stock apps running...
2729 / 930 / 1112 / 1050 / 511 / 927 / 1436 / 5278 / 696 / 600
>>> 15269 points @ stock !!!
switching back to stock....

I would like to know this as well. Also, how do you check to see which processor you have? (0,1,2; slow, nominal, fast)

What is the terminal command to find out? I also considered custom retelling to add some processing oomph. On a per app basis, but reading this... Stock SGP311 on 4.2.2 is chugging fine just north of 20000 points on Antutu. Can we compare Versions? Mine is 3.3.1. I faintly recall reading they mixed up some benchmarking internals because some corporations found loopholes to cheat / inflate scores on new to market devices, maybe that's the discrepancy there?
Another wild thought, could there maybe be, aside from different CPU Models, different kinds of cache / memory scattered through the devices? Would not be the first time a sub par. Cache/Memory bottleneck severely strangled a nominally and factually quicker CPU into much lower overall results. Much depends on weighting within Antutu
Man, what happened with your kernel? We need some stock kernels for 4.3
