[HOW TO] Install any new baseband rom on LG Thrive - Optimus One, P500 Android Development

ok, now let me start off by saying the following:
BACK UP YOUR ROM NOW please, i am not responsible for any data loss or anything breaking on your phone if you follow this method
we will not be using baseband fixes and kernels here because sometimes they work sometimes they do not. They are not reliable.
In this example i will be using pac rom for the p500 which, if you flash it, you will notice that the colors are XXXX-ed up. that is a baseband issue.
so...
Step 1) Back up your current rom
Step 2) Download - put on sd card - flash this rom : http://jenkins.androidarmv6.org/job/android/369/
-this is the lg thrive cm10.1.1 android 4.2.2 rom. in has a built in kernel (boot) which we will need.
Step 3) Back up this rom ^^ once you have flashed it. (dont do gapps and all the other stuff cause its not needed)
Step 4) Once backed up, download the rom you want (miui v4 or v5, cm 10, pac rom, aokp, ANYTHING that is for the lg p500 and is new baseband only)
Step 5) Obviously, get the gapps and all that good stuff.
Step 6) Flash the rom (pac rom, paranoid android, aokp, miui, etc) (DONT FORGET TO> wipe data, cache, dalvik, system, boot)
Step 7) Flash Gapps (if needed, i usualy just keep a back up of all the play store and download the apps i need, this saves system space on start up)
Step 8 ) (notice, you never existed the recovery) Go to back up and restore, and do ADVANCED RESTORE, select the cm10.1.1 rom that i mentioned in step 2, and pick BOOT
Step 9 ) Reboot. check if everything works fine. if it does not boot, then this method does not work for this rom, although it should work on any rom (tested on aokp, pac rom, miui v4)
Step 10 ) CHECK if you have service (if needed) if you dont, flash this : http://www.mediafire.com/download/rpijh2w0cy2dal3/Funny-SIM-Fix-OldBB.zip
Step 11 ) YOU ARE DONE
hope this helps, please leave feedback if this method works. this should work on any old baseband phone that is trying to run a new baseband rom.
If you want cm 10.1.1, go here and find your device on the left : http://jenkins.androidarmv6.org/job/android/
each of the p500+ roms has the same "boot"/"kernel" so it should be universal. so if you have old baseband p500, not p506, just flash the cm10.1.1 for your device.
Thanks to all the great devs out there who make these roms, and really never care about making it work on multiple devices (except rashed )

Hate to resurrect such an old thread, but do you have any of the files from the jenkins links? They're all dead.

BACKUP / INSTALL / REVERT
The following guide is not a "only solution", but just effort to make it short and clear. I take no credit for procedures, as it is just a collective XDA wisdom, taken into on thread.
Due to many questions, asked in CM development threads, questions, not being related to the discussions, and, mainly, how to flash/migrate/roll back, I decided to write this guide.
This thread will be maintained, instructions will be added/removed/fixed per need.
Don't hesitate to correct me, if you feel like this.

◘ Boot to recovery,
◘ Install ZIP from sdcard -
Choose ZIP from sdcard (pick your rom .zip file),
choose Yes.
◘ Go Back, wipe cache partition, advanced - wipe dalvick cache.
◘ No need to flash Gapps on version upgrade.
**In case you have non-working Play Store, or any other Google app, go to recovery and re-flash Gapps, followed by cache/dalvick wipe.
If it's still not working, clear the data on relevant app and try again. In some cases, clearing data of "Google services framework" also helps.
:good: Backing up /restoring your rom:
◘ Boot to recovery,
◘ Backup and restore - just choose what your need, backup or restore.
**It is suggested to be on same kernel in order to perform correct restore! Don't mix between CM9 and CM10 kernels, while backuping / restoring.
◘ When restoring CM9 backup after CM10 rom, or back to CM10 after CM9 -
flash through CWM (like .zip file) kernel, that you've been running on before (or similar, with very same CWM recovery version).
You need to make sure to check all those things before.
◘ CWM flashable kernels for CM can be found here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789397 .
So, flash the kernel, restore your backup, wipe cache & dalvick.
:good: BACK TO YOUR PREVIOUS ROM:
◘ Flash your rom of of choice whether through CWM recovery or PC Odin,
or restore backup, previously done on old rom - it's safe.

FAQ Section
Frequently Asked 'FAQ'
Where is S-Note/S-Memo?
Can I install it on CM/AOKP roms?
A: NO.
Look for alternatives - Memo, Jotter, Papyrus, etc.
I'm confused - I still can't understand, whether I'm running safe kernel or not?
A: Head to this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1789397.
All of the kernels, stated under "CM 10 (JB) Kernels", "CM 9 (ICS) Kernels", "TouchWiz based ICS kernels" are safe. So if you're on the one of those kernels, and have working CWM recovery - you are ready to go.
I'm on pure CM9 or CM10, or another CM based, and want to try another kernel. Can I do this?
A: Yes. If you're on CM9 or CM10 based roms, you can use any of kernels from this thread -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1789397,
stated under "CM 10 (JB) Kernels" or "CM 9 (ICS) Kernels" accordingly -
CM9 to CM9 based (Asylum ICS, Anidroid, Paranoid ICS, Ganbaru, etc.), and CM10 to CM10 based (½ ILLUSIΘN JB, Asylum JB, Paranoid JB, etc.)
What is Gapps and why do I need to flash it together with CM rom?
A:From Cyanogen Wiki:
Google Apps contain the proprietary Google applications that come pre-installed with most android devices.
Due to licensing restrictions, these apps cannot come pre-installed with CyanogenMod and must be installed separately.
CyanogenMod does not require Google Apps to function properly, however, to take full advantage of the Android system, Google Apps are recommended.
These apps include Gmail, Maps, and the Android Market, just to name a few. [
To add: It contains not only know Google apps, but also necessary Google services, that can't be downloaded from the Play store, but must be installed, in order to use Gapps./B]

Can we go from CM9 to CM10 without going back to GB ?
A:Yes. Let's say, you're on latest CM9 nightly.
Backup your rom in recovery, as described in OP, flash CM10 rom and JB Gapps, perform wipe data/factory reset, and you're fine.
To go back, you should flash the latest CM9 kernel from this thread -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1789397,
advanced - reboot recovery, restore your backup, wipe cache and dalvick.
Can we go to CM10 without installing GB rom or kernel? Especially, if I'm on stock ICS?
A: Yes, if you are on safe kernel, again -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1789397.
All of the kernels, stated under "CM 10 (JB) Kernels", "CM 9 (ICS) Kernels", "TouchWiz based ICS kernels" are safe.
Don't forget the full wipe, while moving from branch to branch.
After flashing CM9_safe_kernel my phone won't go past "Samsung Galaxy Note" boot screen. Is my phone bricked?
A: No, stay calm.
It is just your previous system, that can't boot with CM9 kernel.
Turn off the phone, and turn it it into the recovery (power+home+volume up), and continue per OP.
I booted into the recovery and can't see my CM build and Gapps.
A: Inside the menu "Install zip from sdcard" go to "Choose zip from internal sd".
In any way, there is suggested to to put your files to external sd (you can do it anytime through card reader, etc.)
I'm starting to install my zips, and installation is being aborted (I see dead Android with yellow triangle).
A: Your files are corrupted. Re-download it, and compare to MD5 sum, stated at the download site.
If issue occurs again, re-format your sdcard in FAT32, and try again.
Will all my Apps and Data stay on my phone when upgrading from nightly version to nightly version? Or will everything be deleted?
A:All of your apps and data will remain, "wipe cache/dalvick" commands are not touching /data and /system partitions.
Since I rooted and installed Cyanogen Mod I get a yellow triangle when booting the phone; everything has always worked perfectly though.
Is this a problem? And how do I get rid of it?
А:It's a custom binary counter being activated - your warranty is void with this tg.
Search for "Triangle-away" at the forum - it will reset the counter back to "0" and will remove the triangle..
No problems for functionality at all.
I have: Battery drain, instability, sudden reboots/ shutdowns, any other strange issues...
A: Rule number one: Super clean install. Boot to CWM recovery (while on safe kernel), go to "Mounts & storage", and choose "Format /cache, /data, /system". If you have any apps data on /emmc (inte
=rnal storage), back it up, and also format /emmc.
Then install the CM rom and proper Gapps.
Q:
a) My Wi-Fi signal is bad. Should I use another modem?
b) I have no Wi-Fi, what's going on?
A: a) Wi-Fi and modem - different things. Only mobile network is modem depandable. Dig your networks settings/router. b) There is Wi-Fi. Wipe all, do clean install.
I picked a default action for the app (launcher, gallery, whatever), but now I regret and want my choices back.
A:Go to Settings > Apps > All > scroll to default appchosen > open it > scroll down > click "clear defaults > press Home Button > choose whatever you want
I can't backup / restore on CM10 based rom. Why?
A: a)Because it's not working on early versions
b) When you're backing up, check the recovery version/kernel. Be sure to have the kernel on your sd, and the easiest way for painless restore is to flash the original kernel, reboot recovery, and then restore
I installed rom / kernel, and have a bootloop / can't go past boot animation
A: Don't worry. Boot to recovery, wipe cache, wipe dalvick cache, fix permissions.
Still the same problem?
Go to recovery, mounts and storage, format system, data, cache, make your install again.
My 1080p video can't be seen after installing new kernel/rom (Hydra, AOKP, whatever...)
A: Codec problem.
Until it's fixed, get Mobo Player - it plays all the stuff.
I lost root after installing Hydra kernel!
A: Get SuperSU app (flashable .zip), install it from CWM, update binaries.
I flashed X kernel on Y rom and phone can't boot!
A: Since 3rd of October, CM10 has been updated with new Mali drivers. Hense, CM-based roms won't boot with old CM or custom kernels, which are not updated accordingly. For getting explanation about compatibility - post your questions here.

My ringtone plays once only, no loop!

Nice one buddy, will send ppl here for sure.

Thanks ahalford, awesome guide.
1 question though, will my Galaxy Note LPY kernel (with the hard-brick problem) be any problem at all when following this tut? Don't want it to brick
Thanks ahalford!
Following your guide I've managed to get it working!! Really awesome!!
Here are some tips from a newbie for your guide though.
After step 3 I (being the n00b I am) thought I had bricked my phone because it wouldn't boot past the "Samsung Galaxy Note N7000" screen. Luckily I just continued with the guide and found out that was no problem.
Step 4: You didn't mention at the beginning of the guide that we had to place the kernel thing in the external SD card in the phone. Wasn't able to get into the phone at that point (due to step 3) so had to take out the battery and SD card and put the file on it manually.
But for the rest it is a very clear guide, very nice for us n00bs.

As for 3: I noticed it in OP - "Whatever you get (Boot logo, animation) - just turn off the phone, and boot into recovery - (power+volume up+home button)"
As for 4: There is a option in CWM recovery to flash from internal SD. I'll try to add soon link for CWM guide.
CWM guide added to the OP and continued with Q&A.
Got 2 questions
6. Upgrading from version to version:
Boot to recovery,
Install ZIP from sdcard -Choose ZIP from sdcard (pick your rom .zip file), choose Yes.
Go Back, wipe cache partition, advanced - wipe dalvick cache.
No need to flash Gapps on version upgrade.

1. All of your apps will remain.
2. It's a custom binary counter. Search for "Triangle away" at the forum - it will reset the counter. No problems for functionality or else, just warranty void.
Ahalford, man, you are the greatest! Taking it upon you to start and maintain/support this thread for everyone to benefit. XDA needs more users like you!!
Thanks for you kind words, but, sorrowfully, I don't think, that it will force someone to perform search before asking 100th time the same question. Since this thread is not sticky and not in the dev's section, nobody will look at it. At least, I made my effort.
P.S. Regarding your problem - have you tried to change a sim card, same operator, another?

It is a great thread.
I was searching and reading up for days on how to properly root my Note and install Cyanogen Mod.
There are literally 1000s of different: ways to root, kernels, etc. I was totally confused.
Your guide helped me do it in 10 minutes, and finally made clear to me that it really isn't that hard.
We n00bs just need clear steps, that's all, it's not that hard.
I was very surprised to see there were absolutely no tutorials that went through it for us like this one.

Thanks for remembering... I flashed the latest nightly yesterday, and it hasnt happened to me yet
I think it might have been a problem with a bad flash or something, maybe a corrupt download. Anyways, all is on the bright side now!

Yes you can go back to original stock ROM any time by flashing via Odin
Sent from galaxy ace running S3 beta 3.1 evolution
You can go directly to steps G and H after rooting. Step C is for flashing the stock firmware, thats our safety net, whenever things go wrong, we flash stock firmware via Odin and the device becomes brand new.
There is no bootloader issue here, you can directly install custom recovery and get flashing. Just stay away from the ROM Manager app, its incompatible with this phone.
Simple Guide for getting Cyanogenmod working
Hey
I got this phone a while ago and can share my experience on it with you.
first off: DON'T TOUCH ROM MANAGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!
I have seen too many people go down the bricking route to sit and watch another person go down that route...
Anyway, why dont you flash CM 7.2.0 cooper? Ive been using it for a month now and its great! Its the latest stable release, i didnt want to go any higher since I don't have the cash for a new phone, and have no use for a paperweight its quite simple really,
1: download cooper (i havent posted 10 yet so take away spaces) [get. cm / get / 2K8]
2: download CMW recovery (attached: couldnt find file I have online)
3: put the files in your sd root
4: boot into recovery (power+home)
5: install CMW recovery by clicking on (with home button) apply update from sd card and locate the zip file
6: reboot again into recovery (now CMW recovery)
6.1: (OPTIONAL, but recommended) make a full backup under backup and restore
7: Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition and in advanced, wipe dalvik cache
8: install zip from sd, pick the cyanogenmod zip and apply. HAVE FUN
Just ask if there is anything I can help you with
NOTE TO SENIOR MEMBERS AND THE LIKE: I know there is an official thread on this but he made a post on being new to the phone and I'm trying to help...

Need Help!! Did I do the wrong thing?!

hi, currently i have installed cm9.1 stable for note,
using the philz kernel at 1st then wipe and flash cm,
then i realize is not what i want:
1.no video call?
2.can't do apps re-arrangement like samsung ui did
then i want to roll back to the original rom (the samsung ui),
i follow back the steps and install the philz kernel, then i reboot it,
but when i go in to android it say phone process can't open blah blah blah, then i was terrified,
OH MY GOD!!!!! AM I BRICKED!!????!?!?!?!?!:crying:
and i can't go into the phone ui (cm9),
then i quickly take out the battery, using to old vol up+home+power to go in to the recovery by force,
luckyly i saw the CWMR from philz,
and so i'm restoring the old system now,
i'm not sure in future will there be any problem,
but the main thing is, did i do some thing wrong ?
when you went from CM9 back to Samsung TW, did you do a factory reset ? If not, That is probably what caused your issues.
they are both completely different ROMs so more than likely settings from CM transfered over to TW and resulting in tons of FC's
Its normal so dont panic, Wipes are essential when changing ROMs (unless updating the same ROM) just be sure to be on a safe kernel

anyway, do u mean that every time on changing kernel or rom i need to do a full wipe, even in restoration?
by the way, backing up a nand, does backup the kernel too, right?

The way I see it , you need a CM 9/10 or AOSP Rom before you should flash paranoid ..
You dont need to wipe everytime, For example, Upgrading Paranoid Android version 1 to Paranoid Android version 2 will NOT necessarily require a full wipe.
But changing from Paranoid Android to Rocket ROM (for example) WILL require a full wipe
You can also full wipe then restore a nandroid, if you wish too. The main thing is to keep regular backups incase something unplanned happens !

oh i see, im abit understand now,
so, the steps goes on like this,
nand(4.0.4) >> wipe >> cm9 or aosp >> wipe >> pA(4.1.2) >> done
if i want to roll back from pA is
pA(4.1.2) >> wipe >> restore(4.0.4)
is it?

[SOLVED] Taking the leap - first update from stock GB to CM10.1 - right process?

Got a Galaxy Note (N7000) in Australia back in March 2012 (and loving it ). Been reading the forums for about 6 months now - was thinking about upgrading to ICS for a bit, then Jelly Bean came out so I held off. It's taken a while but looks like a few JB roms stable enough that I'm keen to try out - CM10.1 & Paranoid Android.
Really want to try out Paranoid Android but CM10.1 looks like its in a better state so looking to try that, at least until PA moves to JB4.2.1.
I'm aware of the brick bug and not to full wipe (aka factory reset) on an ICS or JB kernel unless known to be safe & I'm making sure I MD5 verify downloads where I can. I've watched a bunch of tutorials on YouTube regarding rooting & installing custom ROMs but I can never be sure how directly they apply to my particular phone/kernel or if their out-of-date (and don't trust their downloads).
Some info:
Phone: Note N7000
Location: Australia
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341
Android version: 2.3.6
* Just want to check whether my process is correct before going ahead:
Can I just install the latest PhilZ JB Kernel here (XXLSC-XJB (JB Leak) "-signed.zip"), using stock recovery to install? I believe it would be incompatible with my current GB stock ROM but my plan is to install this kernel, reboot recovery, then a CM10 kernel (latest from Chasmodo's Kernel Repository, reboot recovery, install CM10.1 ROM (Chasmodo's nightly (20121217)), factory reset and reboot.
Will this cause in problems (keeping in mind I'm coming from an unrooted GB rom)? I've already read about downgrading to a rootable GB ROM and/or using ODIN with a pre-rooted GB ROM including CWM. Another option is ahalford's CM install guide here which seems to indicate I can just flash the "CM9_safe_kernel.tar" via PC Odin - but I'm not sure this will give me CWM (seems more to be a safety measure for upgrading from stock ICS).
Thanks in advance for any assistance and a huge thanks to all who have helped work alternate rom/kernels & community that make all this possible.
--Zar.
Finally worked it out So here's an update & details on how I did it (haven't got much time to post, so apologies for the mess )
After my post I read that TW (touchwiz) kernals (which PhilZ is) are incompatible with CM roms - not sure why this is as I thought the stock kernel/ROM was TW anyway. The official instruction for CM10.1 when coming from PhilZ was to go back to GB so my previous plan seemed a bit redundant.
After reading the tutorials on here a few more times I found the one that works for me. I followed Dr Ketans step one from this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Step One:
"As name suggest flashing This ROM with PC odin, you will have ready made Root + CWM. This ROM was modified by ChainFire (All credit goes to him only). And you can flash it using PC Odin without getting exclamation mark/raise flash counter.
Download :
http://d-h.st/HJM
Mirror"
Downloaded pre-rooted GB image (with CWM) from link above, installed via PC Odin.
Attempted to use KTool to backup EFS but didn’t work
Home button didn’t work for normal use but did allow me to get into recovery mode.
From CWM recovery I followed steps to install Chasmodo’s CM10.1 from here :
install from zip: CM10 kernel
advanced: reboot recovery
install from zip: CM10.1 nightly
install from zip: GApps
factory reset
reboot
CM10.1! Yay
Ktool now works - but EFS verification doesn't (will look into this).
Google backup/restore automatically grabbed my contacts & previous apps.
Data didn't work as the APN's set up for Vodafone whereas I'm on Crazy Johns (related networks in Australia - Crazy Johns uses Vodafone network so I guess that's why it picked up the Vodafone APN). Updating with APN info from Crazy Johns website fixed this.
Happily running CM10.1 now

Hi,
I tried to install Jelly Bean Custom Rom for Galaxy S Plus GT I9001. but I got problem. The ROM is stuck on Boot Logo Looping.
Here is what I do :
1. Flash Stock
2. Install CWM
3. Boot into CWM
4. Factory Reset, Wipe Dalvik Cache, Format System
5. Install ZIP
6. Reboot
Anything I did wrong ?
I have tried 2 custom rom :
1. CM 10.1
2. Pac Man
Both of them behave the same (Stuck on Boot Logo).
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

You need to follow flashing guide , look in wiki according to ROM you have chosen or My Android Solutions (link below) to get out of Boot Loops

Well actually, that is the exactly step the ROM needed to be installed as stated on the thread. Actually, that is how I install all other custom rom. Never found any other way to install the ROM. But for some reasons it keep bootlopping. Stop the bootlooping is easy. Just flash the stock ROM. But that's not what I want. I want to use the custom ROM. FYI. I tried 2 ROMS and both of them behave the same. Bootloop.

Can you point to me which Custom ROM you are trying to install and where it tells you to format system? Also you must understand certain i9001 ROM's need specific CWM and will be mentioned on developers thread..using others would fail. So refer to i9001 Wiki, as its one of the best guide for i9001
Look at what the wiki says
CyanogenMod 10.1 (Based on Android 4.2.2 / Jelly Bean) It's developed by AriesveDevConnection Team
Thread : CyanogenMod 10.1
All major components of the i9001 work except for FM radio.
Installation:
Before you install CM10.1: Preparation (First three are optional. If you want to start fresh, these can be skipped)
Install AppBak from Market, run it and save a list of all your apps.
Install SMS Backup and Restore from Market, run it and backup your SMS history.
Install Call Logs Backup and Restore from Market, run it and backup your call log history.
Boot into CWM5 recovery. Make a full backup. You will need this backup later if you decide to go back to your previous ROM and data.
WARNING: Many apps will Force Close crash if you restore data from a previous ROM.
Use CWM 5.5.0.4 Flashable zip version | Odin version OR CWM 6.0.3.2 with safe kernel (no EMMC bug)
For Odin version of CWM 5.5.0.4, flash recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.4-ariesve.tar.md5 as One Package using the regular AriesVE.ops (Tutorial)
WARNING: Only use this recovery to flash CM10.1, otherwise, you risk bricking your phone!
CyanogenMod10.1 comes as a zip that is installed inside recovery. Download the latest build and put the zip file into the sdcard.
Wipe data / Factory Reset
Wipe cache
Advanced > Wipe dalvik cache
Install zip from sdcard (choose cm-10.1-20130607-dev_connection_team-release1-ariesve.zip)
Flash the gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
You must flash gapps after every upgrade to CM10 since /system is formatted, wiping your previous add-ons.
Reboot phone.
After you setup your Google account, reinstall the three apps from Market in order to restore most of your apps, call log and SMS history.
WARNING: Do not restore backup data of system apps!
If you restore a bad backup with cached settings in telephony.db in data/data/com.*.*.telephony it can break MMS.
It seems that restoring backups can also break Calendar sync.
Notes:
Upgrades from previous versions of CM10.1 are the same process as install, except you do not need to wipe anything. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to even wipe cache and dalvik-cache when upgrading between CM10.1 versions. You only need to wipe if you are doing a major upgrade, switching to a different ROM entirely, or attempting to fix bugs caused by bad backups or corrupt app data.
Under CyanogenMod 10.1, your external SD card can be found under /storage/sdcard1
Reboot into recovery from power menu not working?
Turn off "touch sounds" option in sound settings.
No Developer options & Performance setting?
Tap Build number for 7 times in Settting > About phone
Want to see something fun? CM10.1 has an easter egg that can be activated in System Settings -> About phone. Click the "Android version 4.2.2 / CyanogenMod version" entry several times very fast. The screen will clear and show an Android JellyBean / CyanogenMod icon. Click and hold on the JellyBean / CyanogenMod icon. It will zoom in and activate a lots of flying JellyBean / CyanogenMod icon.

Hi,
after I tried flashing from stock to alternative ROM I had exactly the same. I resolved it after flashing two times (Flash - reboot into recovery - Flash again)
Hope it helps
