I often use on the go adapter for usb sticks and joysticks. The problem I find is that the micro adapter justs acts as a nice lever that is going to kill my socket. So I decided to adress the problem by spreading the load while at the same time tucking it out the way. Funny that when I came into the forum there seems to be threads about making some tiny little usb/sdcard adapters, obviously the smaller the better.
My solution is not small but when I fall asleep watching a movie and me nexus ends up on the floor hopefully nothing will snap!

It is comfortable and makes me nexus much more easy to handle while using OTG.
what's the verdict?
Update...
Power adapter addon.
Was going to make another adapter that included a socket for charging. But infact the original adapter already allows for charging using timurs kernel. But of course I could only charge or use otg but not both. I made this addon that attaches to the original and allows power and otg.
It is quite bulky! I will probably make an all in one at some point.
As for a tutorial... well wiring diagrams for making otg cable can be found all over the web. All I did was use the stripped down to the bare bones usb plugs and sockets, covered nexus in cling film, then used some milliput (can be bought in hardware shops, like plasticine bet sets hard) to fashion the adapter. Bobs your uncle.
Looks good, and does solve that issue.
Another good idea would be a non-OTG version for charging while in use.
Either way, very nice...
Thanks danvee, i had been thinking of one with charging capability as i use timurs otg kernel which allows charging and otg at the same time. I had not however thought of making one that simply charged though, great idea thanks.

Not sure when or if Defy will get its own Deck Dock. But my wife got me these somewhat useless business card holders. However, as they're steel, I stuck a magnet to the back, put in my Defy and voila! Deck Dock!

No... well, OK: lousy pictures but you get the picture. First shows magnet, second "docked" Defy. (Magnet came from Radio Shack).

Wouldn't the BB Torch's charging dock suit?
Hi all,
Within weeks I'll receive my first Android phone, after 5 years using WM. Really hope to get adapted to this new platform. It's that I'm that lucky guy who has happened to win Clove's Motorola Defy giveaway competition .
Anyway, this is purely theoretical, but I have noticed that the Blackberry Torch 9800, closed, is slightly bigger than the Defy, in all 3 dimensions. Besides, its charging dock + home charger (you'll be able to find some of them on eBay, like e.g. this one) takes the Torch in landscape mode, and seems to have its male micro-USB port more to the right side, related to its center, which could match the Defy's. Don't know whether it bears a magnet or not, though. Or, if it is be placed in the same location as required by the Defy sensor. Despite all 'ifs', I wonder if the Defy would fit in.
Anyone here would be brave enough to try one of those and see if it fits?
Just my 2 cents...
Regards,
Carlos
Do you have a BB Torch to compare? The USB adpater would have to be in the same orientation as the Defy's, which is "upside down" (narrow edge up). You'd have to have room to move the USB cover aside on the Defy too.

Unfortunately, not. It was pure speculation. Maybe someone here can make a simple test...
According to Mobilefun.co.uk, this thing should fit the defy as well...
Anyone feel like taking one for the team and putting their claims to the test? Looks like a nice dock but I'm afraid that A) it won't fit snugly and B) the usb cover will get in the way.

It might be worth asking them if they can provide photos to back up their claim.
It's in their best interest after all as I'm sure a few of us are interested in finding a decent desktop dock for their Defy.
What? Milestone (Droid)'s dock?
I don't see how the Milestone's dock would suit the Defy, since the former's micro-USB port is to the left, whilst the latter's is to the right.
I might me heavily wrong though (as usual)...
Regards,
Carlos
Anyone had any luck finding a dock for this thing? I am interested as well.
Some guy's come up with a DIY Dock, credits to uploader
Sorry can't paste links so go to youtube and type in "Motorola Defy media dock"
Looks neat
It's made of cardboard - cereal box style. Good effort tho.
Could be a market for aftermarket stands if someone wants to make them... worked for a guy on maemo.org for the N900. He made them out of laser cut wood and sold them via an online shop he set up. Was very popular.
Considering one of these docks
There are lots of docks for the droids and milestones but none designed for the defy yet. But I did come across a couple candidates that I am considering and wondered if anyone had tried either of them yet.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DM4KLW/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A2LD2YC4L2Z2RO
http://www.clingo.com/home-and-office/universal-podium/
I am leaning towards the first one listed from amazon but the second also looks pretty nice. Neither has a build in charger that will line up with the defy but they have plenty of open space to allow for a usb to plug in.
I use a Clingo which is simple. It doesn't have the magnet required to automatically activate dock mode, of course.
I ordered a cheap desk stand from eBay, for the galaxy SII and the 4x HD fits perfectly!
I also customised a dock for my car, got fed up with trying to squeeze the phone into a rubbish looking universal mount, then connecting a trailing cable. So I hid the cables hard-wired behind the dash, and dremel'd the dock to shape, bent it with a hot air-gun, clamping it in a vice. Getting the connector to stay in place took a hot glue gun. (leaving a cavity underneath means I can still reach my headlight switch, not that i use it, I leave it set to on 100% of the time on the Volvo, as it makes no difference - the daytime running lights are set up to be the main dipped headlights anyway!)
I think now I've got a working prototype I'll buy another and redo it a bit neater. (The dock is only about £4 from china!) as the plastic has reacted a bit to the heat!
The dock is simply squeezed into the gap in the dash trim, it holds fine.
The phone jiggles a bit and it isn't angled towards the driver quite right, but it's fine, and certainly easier than having to fiddle the phone and charger in every time I get in the car!

look great !!! cool man ^^
I Should add, people have commented on two things - firstly in a crash it's going to fly out very easy and be dangerous (Though surely any cheap phone mount will also! Only something like a Brodit will hold it very securely)
Secondly (and quite worryingly!) Perhaps the charging socket will wear out from sitting wobbling around?
Nice but isn't mobile blocking your air-conditioning channel?
Sent from my LG-P880 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, but sitting in the flow of air wasn't a big deal for me. Most universal mounts mount onto a vent!
I since removed this! Firstly, the phone wobbles quite a lot - I was worried that the charging socket could get worn out.
Also, in the event of a crash it would fly around quite easily!
I now use a Clingo, but I modified it by screwing the tip of the ball-joint onto a Brodit base, so it's held next to my stereo
Hi, can you please give the url for the dock you bought ?
Thanks.

I have one like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sync-Charge-Cradle-Dock-Station-Charger-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S2-S3-S4-i9300-i9500-/231021608377?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&var=&hash=item35c9f5fdb9
Though I've now added a shim of card (taped on the back part with black electrical tape) to hold it at just the right angle.
Just to clarify, I'm just talking about desk stands here, the car cradle idea was just me bodging a desk stand, but I don't use that any more.
I doubt a real G S2 car cradle will hold the 4x, the width would have to be the same and I'm sure it's not!
I've been working on a little project of my own for the past few days, trying to fit the largest amount of storage into the smallest space. Here's the current version:

And here's what's under the heatshrink:
It's an 8GB drive, but I could easily do it again with up to 32GB of storage. I shorted the 5th pin to ground, so it is properly recognized as though it were plugged into an OTG cable. The Micro USB connector is attached to the memory with JB Weld epoxy. I used a SanDisk Cruzer FIT USB drive to make this.
Thoughts?

Great Project! Just to confirm, does USB OTG work with the Nexus 4?
On this thread no one seems to be able to make it work?
Just take my money please!
If it works, you should mass produce these.
Btw is that your nexus 4 already cracked?

It's a Galaxy Nexus.
have you thought about spraying it with plastidip to give it a shell?
That could work well. I'm currently waiting for the JB Weld to fully cure. This one was more of a proof-of-concept, if I make another it should look better and have more storage.

Does this drain the battery any quicker?
Let's say if you were using it to read data off constantly?
It looks dumb, they should have built it with an SD slot or have a 32gb model, will not buy until it does.
Good job to the Op - I don't see this sort of affair as a problem because I'd only need the extra storage while it's not connected to a charger or PC anyway.
But... Would it be possible for someone to make a very small USB connector that folds around the back (like a ribbon-cable sort of affair) to avoid the risk of snapping in the pocket - that way you could stick the SD Card on the back of the phone when you're using it.

Go buy a different phone with a sd slot and stop complaining, the OP's work is innovative to say the least, we'll done! A thought tho, a bumper case with built in storage device on the back, a small ribbon cable to a micro-usb connector in the bottom of it and voilà...
Edit: Previous post got in between, hehe... This is what you get for taking a break to smoke and chit-chat before typing out the last and posting... No offense, two people, same kinda idea! Awesome.
Tapatalked from my h4x0r3d up Maguro.
The way I see it:
Use a thick(ish) case, to protect the glass.
Make a mod like this, but with longer, flat cable.
Carve a hole in the case to accommodate and protect this all.
Use wireless charging since the microUSB port will be occupied at all times.
PROFIT.

This uses the pogo pins? If so, awesome,

Hello,
It is made out of MDF and it does make use of the pogo pins, just charging not audio.
I have done a little more work on it to improve the shape.
After a couple of days use I have noted that if I were to do it again I would put some sort of socket for the power lead. Having it permanently attached is not so great when not charging.

also maybe some felt to line the inside of the slot ? so you get a nice slide in and out and know your safe from and pressures from the mdf on certain areas?

Its actually a bit of a hack job, I just used two pieces of stiff copper wire and glued them while it was in a charging state!. However it works perfectly. The pin closest to the bottom is + and the one nearest the top is ground and the two in the middle are audio. Worth checking on google for pinout though.
Also I built this for purposes of charging while using otg adapter only to find it doesn't work, now that is a real pain! I have read up about timurs USB kernel, which allows this although not through the pogo pins. What a design flaw on google/asus part.

I made a Lego dock a few weeks ago too... I got given a Nexus 7 that had a broken USB connector. Lego stand, BluTack to hold some wires, and I could charge reliably for the 3 weeks it took for a replacement USB "board" to arrive.
With the prices of the 2012 N7 dropping with each day I decided it was about time to snag one. The main purpose of buying it was to install into my 1998 Grand Cherokee but I also wanted it removable for a few reason. One was because I also wanted to run a radio still. The radio I'm using is controllable through an app with either Android or iPhone. So it seemed only natural to hide the radio and use the tablet as the interface for it. When the tablet is removed the radio is visible and functions as normal. This also means I don't always have to have the tablet with me to enjoy tunes. Since the tablet can control the radio via blue tooth I can remove the tablet walk over to the camp fire and fully control the radio still. I also wanted it removable to make it easier to deal with doing things like testing new roms or just plain using it in the house or around town for other things.
After going around and searching I ordered an OTG Y cable that I though was going to work but wound up only charging the tablet but wouldn't allow it to go into OTG. Really didn't feel like ordering another one and having it not charge or what ever. So I decided to hack and splice my own together. Also wanted to have it hooked to a USB hub for things like DAC, SP 3 controller, various drives whether it be flash or hard drive , as well as possible web cams in the future.
Parts:
SYBA SD-CM-UAUD USB Stereo Audio Adapter
BELKIN F5U404PBLK USB 2.0 4-Port Mobile Hub
Nexus 7 NVIDIA Tegra 3 1GB Memory 32GB
For now I'm using a hacked cigarette adapter for a step down to 5v for the USB hub
Fiberglass cloth
Resin/Hardener
2 Large safety pins(you'll see)
cables were in a drawer....you all know the story
Onto the pictures
Dash panel with the heat vents removed. The center bar was removed and the entire hole was slightly enlarge a bit more to get rid of the accent bead the goes around the area.

Next I went online and found a cheap 8 gig unit with a broken screen to use as a mold and wrapped it up and made an place for the release.
Fun with fiberglass
After letting it cure and some clean up
Some shaping got it to fit the area I wanted to take up. The dash originally leaned toward the driver a bit. I didn't want it like that I wanted it to be straight so it would be easier to view for all passengers for watching movies yada yada.
Test fit with radio in place
Next was making the catch/ release. Took some more fiberglass ,some brake line, some all-thread, and those big safety pins
Those large safety pins are the springs (after being modified of course)
Second test fit with it fully bonded to the dash panel
Some primer and a thumb press on the release to make it easier to use
Fully painted
I will admit the finish could have been a bit better. I should have spent some more time sanding and finding a better paint that matches the other small areas that are black on the dash but it's for a 4 wheel drive Jeep that get used as a rock crawler how pretty does it need to be. It will be an on going project for sure. I have steering wheel controls so that will most likely get added to the list. A better power supply . Web cam/s kind of hoping for multiple cams for several location around the vehicle. For filming while wheeling.
Here's a pic of the cables used.
So it's the home made OTG cable, USB hub, and hub power wire splice to a USB end to plug into the cigarette adapter that's hard wired behind the dash. When I reopen the dash to do the USB extension I'll get some pics of that.
Good job man:thumbup:
