Google event scheduled for the 24th of July - Nexus 4 General

Well, It seems that Google scheduled an event for the 24th of July. Sundar Pichai, the Android an Chrome lead will be hosting it, so I'll give you a few guesses as to what it's about.

A new Nexus 7 and 4.3. Everyone already knows what's coming

Beat me to it. I posted this in the nexus 7 forum

The Nexus 7 seems fairly likely and 4.3 is bound to hit at some point (especially given the leak of the Google Play Edition ROM). I'm just hoping this isn't another example of what they did at Google I/O (announcing the new Maps for Android 2 months before actual release) and with the Google Play Edition phones (saying they will come on June 27 only for that to be the pre-order date). I just don't want to wait excitedly for next Wednesday only for them to mention that the Nexus 7 will be on the Play Store in 3 weeks and Android 4.3 will be released on that day.

I doubt Moto X will be mentioned. Motorola is its own division and Pichai doesn't really have anything to do with it. Guy Kawasaki had the recent intimate event with the press that Leo Laporte, Robert Scoble, etc. were invited to. However, Kawasaki actually serves as an advisor to Motorola, so that makes sense. The leaked videos of Moto X show something close to stock, but it's still skinned; unless a Google Play Experience version is released, I wouldn't expect it to come up at all.

Slacker Radio caching problems 4.2 Jellybean

I'm normally a silent - and thankful - observer here at xda. Just posted this in the Android General section as it applies to all 4.2 devices, but I'm on a Nexus 4 and would like to share it with you here. Mods please beat me if this is a no-no.
wolf5150 said:
So... want to cache your radio stations on that shiny new Nexus 4? No workie.
If I want to know how to fix something, I come to XDA. I rarely contact actual product support for... anything. But I want an ETA for a fix to this. So I just chatted up Frank S at Slacker and got.. "answers". Transcript follows:
Frank S.: Hi, my name is Frank S.. How may I help you?
ME: When will the Android app be updated for JB 4.2 compatibility? Caching is broken on Nexus 4
Frank S.: This is a known issue with Android 4.2. We expect this to be fixed in a future version of the Android OS. You can avoid this issue by downgrading to the previous version of Android until a fix is released by Google. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
ME: A downgrade is not possible on this device - ships with 4.2. Can you elaborate on the "Android" issue?
Frank S.: Caching does not work on devices running Android 4.2 due to bugs and changes included in that version of Android. This issue does not appear in previous versions of Android, so we are awaiting a fix from Google in the next version.
ME: Just so I'm clear on this... Slacker will absolutely not be updating the app? Have you any information that indicates Google is going to retrofit their new OS to work with your app?
Frank S.: Google has already announced that there are several major bugs included with Android 4.2, and expect to have these fixed in a future update. Since the issue only appears with this version of the OS and since nothing with the Slacker app has changed as a result of updating to 4.2, we expect to see what changes Google plans before attempting to update the app to work around OS bugs.
ME: Well then... Caching is the sole reason I use Slacker over other services. I will attempt to find a workaround today, but if I fail I will need to cancel the remainder of my subscription
Frank S.: I do apologize for the inconvenience. Since your device is unable to downgrade to 4.1, you should be able to access cached content from your previous device until an update is available.
ME: Previous device? Not in the habit of keeping old devices
Frank S.: THat would be the only solutionwe are able to offer at this time.
ME: Are you saying a pro-rated refund is off the table here?
Frank S.: Slacker does not offer any refunds on purchased subscriptions.
ME: ....nor app updates for compatibility with new platforms? What you're saying is outrageous
Frank S.: Slacker never guarantees that all subscriptions services will be compatible with all phones and all versions of operating systems. While we will always try to make sure our app is available for use for most phones and that as many subscription features are available, some updates may take time to receive, especially on devices that are updated first.
ME: You just got done saying that Slacker would not be updating the app for 4.2 - Do I have that wrong?
Frank S.: We are waiting for Google to release what changes they are making to 4.2 before attempting to update the app to work around OS bugs.
Frank S.: Once we have that information, we will act accordingly.
ME: What "bugs" would you be referring to? Updates to OS framework and functions perhaps? Either Slacker has plans to update for 4.2 compatibility or it doesn't. How does the "OS bug" argument apply here? What is the bug??
Frank S.: I don't have any specific information on the exact issue, only that it is a known issue with Slacker on Android 4.2 and we are currently investigating and awaiting more information from Google before further action is taken
Frank S.: At some point in the future, I would expect the Slacker app to be compatible with Android 4.2, but I don't have any information on when that would be.
ME: Okay.. how about a simple "We're working on the issue...", instead of "Google is the devil and they broke our app!" Thanks
I hope this was a rogue agent... Is "Blame Google!" actually Slacker's stance on this?

Wow, thank you for your input. I just re-read the transcript and you are absolutely right but... where was it exactly that he didn't say they were going to sit on it until Google fixes the "major bugs" in 4.2 that break Slacker? Near the end I suppose. Read the transcript again (if you can). :silly:
It's unreasonable to expect that Slacker is updated right this second.
It is absolutely unacceptable for a paid subscription service to broom a paying customer with BS like this - again, if this is actually the company line. Anyone (hopefully) have a more encouraging exchange with a Slacker rep?
Evidently they don't have a huge subscriber base moving to Android 4.2, but FYI I tried Slacker chat again just now, different rep. They're not willing to look at this issue at all.
According to them, Android 4.2 is absolutely "riddled with bugs.."
Sad.
The Slacker app hasn't been "bug free" in the 2 years I've subscribed to the service, but I've not complained until now. They have my $$$ for 4 more months of service that I can't use - and will force me to involve the CC company rather than simply pro-rate a refund. Shameful.
Anyone caching music with Rhapsody on your N4?
I'd be surprised if your card company does anything. It's not Slacker's fault you moved from your supported device to an unsupported one.

Really?
From Slacker.com 11/26/2012: http://support.slacker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/67
"The Slacker Radio application is only supported on Android phones and devices running any version of the Android Os 2.x or higher."
I missed the part where it says "..If you ever upgrade to a current generation device (past Android 4.1), Eff you. We appreciate the free cash".

Surprised how wrong Tech press was with Google I/O Nexus 7 predictions and others

A good number of interesting upgrades and enhancements were announced at the opening day of the Google I/O conference, but I am very surprised how wrong the Technology press was with their predictions regarding 2nd gen Nexus 7, Babel, Android 4.3, etc.
Additional announcements are possible, but I doubt it.
Maybe these reporters/bloggers just make stuff up to drive traffic to their sites to bump up ad revenue.
Who ever these tech reporters were getting their info from must have zero cred now. I guess its time for them to cultivate new sources.

Uhhh no, the first rumors for the iPhone 5 were way off. The iPhone 5 was supposed to have a totally revamped design with a larger screen and a rounder design. Instead we got the iPhone 4S which looked exactly like the iPhone 4 and it wasn't until next year that the iPhone 5 came out.

I think Apple leaks a lot of their stuff out so people aren't disappointed which would cause their stock price to go down. I think Google's stock price is actually based in reality and not speculation like Apples (this is why Apple's dropped 50% in the last couple months).
An upgraded Nexus 7 was impractical I think just from a cost benefit perspective. I don't think there was any chance of KLP coming out when a lot of people just got JB upgrades.
I do like a lot of the developer stuff that was announced. I am so happy that there is now a way to beta and alpha test apps and app updates both from a dev and user perspective.
You can't really compare "early" leaks of the iPhone to leaks just days before Google I/O. By the time the iPhone was released, the tech sites had the iPhone 5 pegged.

Who knows if the sites got bad Intel or made stuff up to get hits or maybe they was right but Google ran in to snags and the stuff wasn't ready and they didn't want to release stuff that wasn't ready yet. In the end it doesn't really matter and like they say if you want to know the truth get it from the horses mouth. You can tell Google has something planned when they phased out the 16 gig nexus. It was like when they phased out the 8 gig version when the 32 gig came out. I hope they come out with a CDMA version of the nexus 4. I know its a pipe dream after what Verizon did to the galaxy nexus. Its interesting to see what Google has planned for the near future.

Android 4.4 KitKat really

What changes will 4.4 have or when will it be releases is still up in the air yet but I'm sure Google will announce there big changes by the holidays.

Speculation: Chromecast announcements coming soon?

It occurs to me that Chromecast was released on July 24th, 2013 with (at least for early adopters) 3 months of free Netflix. I always figured that those 3 months were to help compensate for the fact that there is not much you can do with it yet.
Many of us know by know that the Nexus 5 is expected to launch by the end of October. Maybe it's not at all coincidental that this will be around the same time that all the free 3-month Netflix trials expire.
So yeah, anyone else think/hope that we're going to hear something big for Chromecast at the same announcement where they launch the Nexus 5?
I'd like it to come to Canada already.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk
Lots of people already have it in Canada, and it works just fine within the content geo-blocking restrictions (Netflix Canada, no Hulu+ or Google Play). Those restrictions won't change when it's officially released for sale in Canada. In any case, there are no technical issues to resolve before releasing it for sale in Canada - it's just a supply problem keeping it restricted to U.S. sales at the moment.
I'd rather see Google put more priority on upgrading the poorly-peforming Beta tab casting software before pushing it out to world release.
I was hoping that maybe the API for third party apps would finally open up to work with consumer devices. But maybe that's to optimistic for Google.
Or, at minimum, maybe they'd announce a whole whack of new compatible apps.

The DIAL protocol used by Chromecast was jointly developed by Netflix and YouTube (and YouTube is Google, obviously).
I think the promotion was to aid in the adoption of Chromecast by new Netflix owners.
Not an apology in the sense of, oh well you can't do much - but an incentive, for what it was at face value.
And the Netflix 3 month pass wasn't just for early adopters - the allotment of those freebies ran out on day 1 of sales.
Few people got in on that.

Nope.
We need a final, not beta, Chromecast SDK. That will allow more apps and if done soon - as in real soon - then they can consider some Chromecast promo for the holidays and have the advantage of buzz in the press over the new apps.
Google just rebranded Google TV as Android TV this past week.
Looks like they're still working at making a rational, cohesive marketing statement on where they stand with TV to me.

Glad to hear someone somewhere is working on something. We've gone nowhere but backwards for the last several months. Makes you wonder what their devlopers can have been up to all this time.
No mention of when the SDK might be released? They have been promising this since the start. Weren't they actually boasting about how quick and easy it would be for developers to get their apps tailored for Chromecast? So where's the code, boys? IMO it's more apps that are needed not poor quality streaming from our phones .

Google never said anything about the SDK being released. That was all speculation. The unfortunate part is the Chromecast will never be a completely open sourced product. I have a feeling it will remain mostly locked down as they are aiming it as a mainstream device. Not a developers toy.

Hmmm, well I'm certain I read there was an SDK released to developers at the time the Chromecast itself was released but it was limited to "preview " form for exploration and testing purposes. What would be the point of that if Google did not intend one day to release a full (though not necessarily public) SDK for these guys to get their apps to market?

Thanks - knew I had't dreamt it .
So presumably there have been plenty of companies out there who have been preparing apps for the day Google gives them the nod and releases the the code that will allow them to run their work on non-whitelisted devices.
Some, yeah.
Vbukit has an interesting offering in the works. Remote Cast - I'm looking forward to that advancing.
No idea on others. I'm content to wait and see. Vudu is on my wish list.
The defects list is publicly available. I'd hope that those get sorted as well, prior to the release of a lot of apps.

Has anyone received the Google Assistant update yet?

I'm currently running Pure Nexus and like many/most custom roms it has GA enabled but the other 2 phones in my house are stock Nexus 6P's and neither have received the update yet. One I signed up for the beta program and it downloaded and installed the 7.1.2 beta but no GA. Then I read today that it'll be a Google Play Services update that enables GA across MM/Nougat devices so I updated Play Services to the latest beta and still no GA. So, what do you know, what do you hear?? My wife and son really want GA but want to stay stock. Their tired of me messing with their phones.

Thanks for the reply. Kind of strange that a weekend ago Google announced it wound start hitting capable phone starting last week in the US first yet it seems no one has received the update.
I'm on a Nexus 6P, never rooted, in the Beta program with 7.1.2. I'm also in the Google Play Services beta program. I have installed the Pixel Launcher from APK but otherwise stock. So far no Assistant. Live in the US.
Still no assistant here either. Are we missing something, or has Google not actually released the update like they said they would? I don't know of anyone that has actually received it to this point.
It's a server side switch and in typical Google form, they are turning it on very slowly. These trickle rollouts of new features are ridiculous. Either it's ready for release or it's not. If it is, release it to everyone. If it's not, then don't announce anything until it's ready.

Isn't this linked to the google play services apk? If someone gets it, wouldn't posting the apk give it to all of us?

You have to have the correct Play Services but Google still has to "turn it on" on their end. That seems to be what is taking so long. As long as your Play Services are up to date you should be good. I entered the beta program for that as well. Still no Assistant though.
Mine was activated yesterday, right around the time I updated to the 7.1.1 March security patch. Don't know if there's a direct relation though.
I just got it today, I had everything updated and it showed up on its own.

Yay:victory:
Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like we're very slowly but surely on our way. Still no GA love for the 2 stock 6P's in my house yet.
Edit: P.S. I didn't start this thread to complain, I was just wondering if I was the only one not receiving the GA update. I can only imagine what a mind blowing amount of mega giga google flops of computing power it must take for what must be thousands (if not tens of thousands) of questions per second via voice, interpret it, then send the answer back. All within a second or 2. For the thousands or tens or thousands of users asking/interacting at the same time. Mind boggling. It's probably a very slow rollout to be able to keep up and ramp up for the onslaught until they get a full picture of what the new computing/server farm needs will be.
My Nexus 6 has it, my wife's 6p does not.

Just got it guys. Running LOs, Google app ver. 6.13.25.21, and Google Play Services ver. 10.2.99, location Kosovo. It feels great not to do so many workarounds just to have it
East coast rolled out 32GB.
Still Waiting as well
I am still waiting as well. February 5 Security Patch, Google(Beta) 6.14.14.21.arm and Play Services 10.2.98.
Like so many others I signed up for Play Services Beta, but unlike the others I never got a bump up (update), and Still have not received the March Security Update.
But I swear if I don't side load most things from Google I am the last to get them.
