Anyone else having trouble with their LTE reception? I just came from an iPhone 5 and fortunately around me the area is kind of blanketed in LTE but I have yet to get any solid connection on the One where as with my iPhone 5 it would lock on and get great speeds. I saw the LTE on the one pop in a couple times but just for a couple secs and even once long enough to start a Speed Test but then it "lost connection" in the middle of the test. I assume a PRL update is needed or at least I'm hoping its just a PRL update.
You practically have to be making love to the tower to get 4G to connect. And yes you are not alone.

Hmm wonder if this is something that can be fixed via software, this is kind of bumming me out - this will be the one and only gripe I'll have.

I was a bit harsh...The phone is quite capable of grabbing an LTE signal..But in fringe areas is will not hold it.It will switch back to 3G..On the sensorly App it seems anything that is 0-2 bars will grab a signal but will drop it eventually..
But man when you are in 3-4 bars in dark purple this phone flys on LTE.
I'm pulling crazy far lte speeds

Yeah I was too on my iPhone 5 - like 30mbps download and 10 upload. I'll update this post when I get another chance to test it again I went ahead and did a profile and prl update.
Sounds like location. I am in Houston and 80% of the time its on 4G, I usually get around 15 to 25 down on 4G. Indoors It stays on 4G but speed drops to around 2

This is a software decision.
For most networks, the decision to switch back to 3g would be wise. For most, LTE is blazing fast and 3g is usable. Switching back to 3g on the fringe of an LTE tower is a fine decision on say, Verizon. It also makes sense from a battery standpoint. There is no sense making the higher power LTE radio strain for a signal when there is a perfectly usable 3g one available to a lower power radio.
The problem is with Sprint, with Sprint, you want to hold onto every last drop of LTE because even the faintest, messiest, LTE signal is going to be faster than the 3g.
There will be a software update, I am fairly confident, that will change the values where the the phone gives up on LTE.

I was going to return the phone today but I'll roll the dice in hopes there is an update for this because in those "fringe" areas my Note II holds 4G and its only 2Mbps down and 1Mbps up but it's better than the 3G 28.8k it switches to..
I just hope when the area is covered by more LTE it'll even out..Happy to hear that about Houston which has more coverage that the One holds it's 4G better..This is what im banking on.

I'm smack in the middle of what is supposed to be a fairly saturated LTE area for Sprint (North Dallas, TX) and mine keeps switching between 3G and 4G with total data drops seemingly random and many times throughout the day. What's weird is often times, I'll go to use the phone and the 4G is there and 3 or more bars, and then as soon as I open an app that uses data the connection will drop. It doesn't happen every time, but way more than I can live with. I'm thinking about returning it to Sprint and going with AT&T instead. I just hate to have to hassle with it and pay more for less.

well, then i guess all I can hope for is some sort of update that helps keep 4G connected
Probably has to do with a minimum signal strength value to keep it connected to LTE and not search for a stronger signal. Hopefully there will be an update or a patch to fix this.

I just feel like not enough people are complaining about this issue and it'll just keep working the way it is now. Which would suck.
Through out my searched for the night I ended up at a tmobile website where they too were having the same 4G issues.. Maybe it is a design problem and not just software.

That's helpful...with issues like this, especially at or near launch of a new device, it's always a question of device vs. network vs. software issues. I'm always skeptical that the device is the issue, especially on flagship models. I posted on a Sprint forum and one user said he took his phone back and Sprint swapped it for another HTC One and he's had no issues. Says he thinks it's some type of provisioning issue, which I am not too sure of. But he said he a similar issue with the Evo LTD (I think) and swapped and no more issues. There also was a Sprint rep that chimed in on the thread and advised me that an Vision upgrade had been made in my area yesterday and to update profile and prl and then power down for 3-5 minutes. I followed that advice but I'm still having issues. For reference, I'm in 75240 zip code.

Yeah, I think most of us that have been around a while realize that. I could care less about the bars. Hell, I hardly even talk on the phone. What I need is Data to work, consistently. I don't even care if it's 4G if a decent 3G is available and would provide a consistent connection. Well, yeah, I would prefer it be 4G. The selling point for Sprint right now is their prices and unlimited Data. When you factor in that they are really trying to upgrade their network to compete with the other big 2, and are oriented towards customer concerns at the moment, it makes them appealing. But they got to get the data consistent, especially in large markets like Dallas, TX, or they are just going to keep on churning customers. I just switched to them from Verizon as I was at the end of my contract and was a bit tired of Big Red's bullying, but I have to hand it to them, their network is fantastic. I might be going right back to them, or take a chance on AT&T, which I switched from to Verizon a couple years ago.

Hi guys do we really need 4G or Lte these days ?
Those mobiles supports JUST one Radio frequency .. which is NOT good ..
So you will travel somewhere else 4g /lte will stop working cos of diff. frequency ..
It is about of time when mobiles will support all 4g /lte frequencies same as 3G network ..
I think DC-HSDPA is LEADER now days with brilliant speed ..
4G in UK has EE company which is completely UNACCEPTABLE ! Ridiculous prices overcharging .. NO not ready yet ..

Thnx

I feel like I'm not getting DC-HSDPA speeds with t-mobile in NYC. No LTE yet either
Still love this phone though!
3UK, DC-HSDPA speeds are fluctuating badly, in the same spot, speeds range from 0.5/0.3 to 14/4, throughout the day, it's terrible! Pings always seem to be around 60-90 though so that's alright.
How do to check the connection status of the N4? All I see is an H in the signal bar...
Anyone found any coverage on o2

The N4 radio is not capable of showing when it is using DC-HSDPA, if you go into about phone > status, it'll tell you when using HSPA+ (HSPA+:15) but that's as high as it goes.

The radio knows perfectly well what network type it is on/band/frequency. The problem is that Android has no standard way of displaying anything other than network type. Manufacturers implement their own field test apps, which can communicate directly to the radio and get this information.
Back to the point, no phone with proper Android does. Android does not have a definition for DC-HSPA+ as a network type. This was hacked into CM, which will bite them later on like it did Samsung for LTE (certain phones will say eHRPD instead of LTE since they have conflicting constant 14 in TelephonyManager). It's fragmentation at it's finest.
That's not the point, it can utilise DC-HSDPA, but it doesn't show it in TelephonyManager, even with CM's commit, they said it only works on certain phones because the radio would not show it to the software on most phones.

If you run speedtest or another app that uses data for a few seconds, after starting a test, quickly switch to the phone status (multitasking window) and it should show HSPA+:15 whilst data is flowing.

tried it but only HSPA:8 still. probably my carrier sucks 2mb up on full bars
How strange, not exactly sure how things work in America but I think you have to sign up to a high speed, or 4G plan for HSPA+, but like I said, I'm not entirely sure. There could also be an alternate APN for high speed.
i dont see the point of having lte when you can have hspa+. i get 25/3 speeds in hungary, which is more than enough.

It is all in your settings about phone .. there is network which say HSPA 10 .. that means it is enhanced HSDPA
and in older mobiles shows HSPA 8 which is lower ..
note : u can see this only in nexus 4 ROM or this style of android..
on mine lg it doesnt say number just HSPA ..

Well, I've had this phone for a good 3 months now. I used to have an S2 with H+. I'm not exactly sure how fast 3G(EVDO) is supposed to be, but I'm assuming I should be able to, at the very least, do a Google search. I can barely browse sometimes on LTE, let alone 3G.
Well, today, my buddy showed be a website on his Verizon iPhone 4. It was, at the very least, ten times faster than my browsing experience. It felt as fast as my Wi-fi!
This raises a serious question for me:
Is the HTC One slow? Or is it just Sprint being Sprint? Because I have yet to see such browsing speeds, even in strong(ish) LTE areas.
I have only the One on Sprint, so I have nothing to test it against, but can Sprint's 3G be that bad? Can verizon's 3G be that good?
Are you guys able to browse comfortably on 3G? Is my device defective?
I have no idea. I just want to be able to use my mobile phone as a mobile phone. As in, able to use the internet outside of my house. It's very frustrating sometimes when I want to look something up and the connection times out.
So, how fast is your browsing experience?

3g maxs out at around 2-3 mbps I'm not sure but this is the limitation of the evdo technology that's is being used. Sprints internet service has been decreasing over the years probably due to their backhaul but as network vision is being applied your data speed rates should be increasing. Verizon has fast 3g because of their network as of now sprint is playing the catch up game but it shouldn't be that long until it's there. If you just want ur mobile phone to work like a mobile phone shouldnt that just be calls?

And 2-3 megs on 3g? Ha! That's a good one... I barely get 2 on LTE. I get like 80kbps, if even, on 3G. Is there something wrong with my phone or is it just Sprint?

In absolute disbelief at your 3G speeds. Do you think that the problems around South Bay area are because of Network Vision upgrades and LTE? The Sprint rep told me, when I bought my phone, that we would get LTE by August (this month).
I really like this phone, and Sprints prices are very reasonable. How long do you think before South bay gets a stable 3G network?

Very unlikely you'll get any adjustments towards contract termination. If you happen to get ahold of a sympathetic Care rep, they may be able to reimburse you x amount of dollars per x months, but that's probably going to be about it. They give you 14 days to "try" their network. If you did not cancel within that 14 days, you are stating that you are OK with everything and agree to roll with it for 2 years.
As far as speed issues, I have seen ups and downs as well. I believe ever since the Network Vision expansion, Sprint has devoted less attention to general tower maintenance on the whole and more towards beefing up for future performance. Therefore a local cell site with a capacity issue does not get repaired/upgraded/tweaked as fast as it should, and all of a sudden your phone is pinging towers even further away just to establish data connection, hence the lower speeds and reliability.

Man. I wish I had read up more about Sprint. I would have known about how much of a failure wimax was and would have stayed away.
Well, here I am.
My other concern is: Does anybody have a different brand of phone on Sprint and get better data speeds? I am utterly shocked that data speeds could be so slow in Silicon valley. Its really hard to believe that Sprint is so bad that it barely covers the 680 and 101 here.
Really, the slow speeds limit basic functions like searching and browsing. Forget about streaming and downloading.

I get about 700kbit download and 600kbit upload on average which is good enough for browsing and video calls but forget about downloading 50+mb apps.As long as texts work all the time and I can roam for free I'm good to go.
Just remembered thanks to that guy mentioning roaming. Apperently people in the past people would flash a Verizon prl that would allow them access to their 3g service by forcing roam. After a while sprint would message them via a letter or something telling them they are excessively roam and their account will be terminated. This was a method that some were using to get out of their sprint contracts without having to pay the etf. Although this is morally indecent so it is up to u to try it. I don't know how the results for u will come out though since u just opened ur account just tossing it out there
Lmao!!! This is the very reason there is a sick of sprint thread. 3g is not usable in most areas. I was with them for 10 years b4 I finally got myself kicked off and went to att. I'm desperate people. I can't go along with this kind of service. I would be perfectly happy with 2 megs down. I dont need 30 megs down or whatever, and chances are, if Sprint has never really taken the effort to put decent 3G around here, they probably won't with 4G.
So about the roaming thing... Will I really get kicked out without an ETF? I think I can because I technically didn't ask them to kick me off, right? I just ended up accidentally roaming a bit too much. Does anybody have experience with the roaming loophole? Will I be able to keep this phone or what? Will they give me roaming fees? Is Verizon's 3G going to be that much faster?

Lol yes sir I just got kicked off July 23rd but I switched to att the day I found out I could. I would just stay with a Verizon prl not like 00003 or something and you have to do it for at least 3 months in a row. I would leave my phone downloaded torrents every night before I go to bed. At least a couple gbs in size. Sprint didn't kick me off right away tho. I did this in December January and February then I eventually gave up BC I didn't think they would boot me. Then in June they sent the letter saying my service would be disconnected ETF FREE!!! So I Porte's my number to att and the rest is history

Seems very doable if I set up a hotspot.
Just to confirm, does anybody else have experience with this? Are there any fees involved? This sounds too good to be true. I've looked this up online, and I see very few people who actually tried this and reported back.
But if I get to keep my phone and sell it and leave Sprint and go to AT&T and not have to worry about fees then I'll definitely do this with no hesitation.
Honestly, it's all about your location.
In areas with no Network Vision upgrades and ancient T1 backhauls, sprint's 3G is going to basically be unusable. While the EVDO towers can easily handle 1.5-2mbit of speed, the backhaul is so clogged that you are lucky to get 128kbps. (.1mbit)
I disabled the 4G Radio in my phone and did several speed tests on EVDO. This was in peak usage time (~1PM). I live in Maryland and I am in the Baltimore market rollout. This is a Network Vision tower, with 4G LTE I am connected to. The backhauls are fully upgraded with fiber. My speeds mostly sat around 1.7-1.8mbit. Enough to stream music on the go, load web pages, stream 360p youtube.

If you live in an area that is getting a 4G LTE rollout, the 3G speeds will definitely increase - and will probably be equal to those 3G speeds of the other CDMA provider - Verizon.
Then I enabled the 4G radio in my phone, ran another set of sets. About the same time (~1PM.)

My average during peak times is anywhere from 5-9mbit down, with 3-5mbit up. Easily enough to stream HQ Music, HQ Youtube, quickly load web content, and even some HD netflix worked without problem.
During off-peak times, I easily speed test at 15-16mbit down, and 7-8mbit up.

My favorite has to be off-peak times. After about 11pm, everything is amazing. I can do multiple things online without issues. Tether to my PC, stream music, download files, ect. I've hit 16mbit down pretty easily, and I'm actually pretty far away from the tower. My RSSI is generally about 110-113dBm, which is getting to the edge of usability. I never lose my connection. (75 is right next to the tower, 120 is the edge of the signal.)
Been waiting for the 4g since 2010 and I've had enough. Time to go to T-Mobile.

thinking about doing the same thing, I'm in Queens and it sucks haha
just worried about building penetration with them, especially in NYC
Yeah I hear you. I got sold on it today at work. One of my guys has been with T-Mobile for years I did a speed test and you see the results. He did it with his Samsung note 3 and got 29 mbps download and close to the same on upload. Frigging amazing. It's faster then my Wi-Fi on comcast at home. Time to make a move. Sad thing is I've been with sprint since 2000. Gonna be weird.

I have been with Sprint over 10 years now. I don't know how much more I can take either. The network is so unstable in my area. Constant dropped calls, 3G is to the point where even at full signal I have to do toggle airplane mode for it to kinda work sometimes. 4G signal strength is a joke. Tri band is coming very soon but I'm just so so so tired of waiting.
You think your speeds are bad?

Here are results from my newly upgraded Network Vision Tower not even a mile away from me just down the road.
Sprint 3G with "great signal".
Verizon 3G will usually run faster than 4G Sprint LTE. Even though I'm very close to the tower, it constantly cuts in and out. The speed sucks.
Thank god for Comcast. I know a lot of people hate them but I am very happy with my connection except for netflix congestion which should be fixed soon. I usually am above my rated speed even at peek times.
My tower is absolutely pathetic. They aren't all done but my tower has been borked since July of 2013. Now 3G pretty much doesn't work at all.
The only thing that is nice is I now have an HD Voice tower which does sound awesome when it works when talking to someone else with Sprint on an upgraded tower. That's if it can actually hold a call.
Dan Hesse is still promising a Super 4G network to rival the competition when he did a recent interview on Mad Money seen here.
The build out is taking way too long. I know a new network is not built overnight but it's absolutely awful. It's so bad my local news did a story on it cause so many viewers were calling in wanting them to do a story.
I'm still holding out for Tri-Band is the only hope left, but I just don't know how much more I can take.
At least your guys 3G "works" if you want to call those speeds "working"
I have the same results in maplewod, voice in my house is terrible always getting dropped. I manage to get pretty good 4g in bloomington, but I am not in bloomington that often. perhaps if sprint actually buys t-mobile that will help things along.

A lot of the towers around here are just borked. What I have been reading it's the hand off between new equipment to older legacy equipment. So eventually it should all be replaced but yea pretty much anywhere in the metro it sucks big time. Most of our towers should be getting 800 MHz & 2.5 GHz LTE in the coming months. I will be upgrading to the next HTC in tri-band flavor. We *should* see awesome speeds on the 2.5 GHz band since we were in a wimax market. We will see how the handoffs go between the 3 frequencies. I'm expecting dumped signals & dropped connection but it's suppose to be seamless.
The fastest I got out of Sprint
Here's what I'm looking at
And that's after most of the university students went home for spring break. Usually at 4 AM the speeds skyrocket though I've hit the max that our 3G supports (I probably have insomnia)

I don't have any problems for the most part in the north east. Almost always 4g (LTE) and only occasionally does it drop to 3g while driving on highways.
I can stream netflix while driving and it only occasionally has to buffer.
I'm not the only one getting the b.s service right? I have unlimited high speed LTE and see the image for what I get with 3~4 bars of LTE I've had this problem since my s4 and note 3 and now on note 4.
Have you tried a new SIM?
I get this sometimes too on the tower by my house. It is super fast on some towers but others have speeds like you are showing.
Yea. Sometimes it shows good reception and then I get nothing. What helped me at work is getting that signal booster. You can get it at a local T-mobile store for free. ($25 deposit? Don't remember)
This thread talks about the cell spot router and the signal booster:

Honestly, I've never had better service, however.
It's a speed test issue not a service issue. Had the same thing tried a different test and fixed it.

Not a speed test issue, I know by now T Mobile is a pretty good liar about there LTE coverage. Here's a speed test done at home the previous one was at school. Also I was a sprint member before and there 3G was quicker then T Mobile 4g ( not lte). Also if you guys flash a AOSP rom you'd see what your service signal actually is. (I'm stuck on TouchWiz because of wifi calling) I get no bars at work because of environment, can't blame T Mobile for that.
Also another noob question if I have bars but no Internet why can't I call or text? Aren't those bars for voice and text?
I take some issue with your wording of this. T-Mobile's service is not fake, and they don't lie about anything. You have to understand that EVERYTHING on a mobile device is subject to far too many factors for me to name, and everyone will have a different experience. Just because you have not had a good one doesn't make their service fake or them liars. There is no "best carrier", other than what's best for YOU. If you had a good experience with Sprint, go back to them. I hate Sprint, and I'll never have them again. I've had great experiences with T-Mobile, and it continues to get better for me under John Legere's captaincy.
Also, for the record, speedtest.net is not a definitive test.
I'm not saying sprint is better but it's ridiculous how anything but lte is good on TMOBILE most of the time 4g or edge on TMOBILE time out can't even load a simple page. They don't cover a lot of what they say on there map for LTE and most of the time I don't get speeds I'm told to get even when my phones are indicating LTE with more then enough bars. Also why do the signals change when I'm on AOSP? I get what AOSP is saying LTE speeds when indicating LTE. I don't have to do a speed test to tell me if I'm getting good Internet speeds my phone also indicates it on the top left of what it's using and sometimes LTE is really good but most of the time it's pretty unreliable and slow.
To argue T-Mobile's side. I get H+ in areas at work that my Verizon note 3, whether on Verizon or T-Mobile got no service, and it speed tests a very usable 5mbps. It will get even better with band 12 turned on.
I wish I got that, I get around 25~100 kilobytes
I never see anything above 3-8 mbps , one time i saw 20, but that was one time.
Even I get 25+ now and then but never stable and most of the time on b.s h+
Ive had the same issues but what i found is that i have to switch or force my phone to 4g for a while and then back to LTE. On LTE there are times where i will be 20+mbps down and then ill be at less than one in the same building. What i did is force it to 4g and it was actually faster. I dont know why this helps it but it has for me. I then switch back to LTE whenever i seem to remember to switch it back. I called tmobile and they had be turn off the phone for a few minutes and then turn it back on and at the time, it fixed the issue but i havent been able to get that to work any other time.
Didn't even see this when I made my thread. I've been about a month now with worthless service on T-Mobile. Whole reason I left Verizon for T-Mobile is because I got service at work where I stream Netflix, Pandora, etc. Now I can't even do that. I get H+ in my work building.
I have -58dBm signal strength usually which shows as full bars and I can't even load web pages. Get random bursts of slightly alright speeds which quickly goes away. Usually 1mbps down. Was getting 5-6mbps down. Now I really get .18 Mbps down or less.
Sprint has zero signal at work but Verizon does. Pisses me off I left Verizon for T-Mobile when I don't even get the service I did anymore. They always tell me everything is fine too.

Tmobile working great here.
Yup and every time you call me "tower us being worked on" good one.
Signal at location
Attempting to run speed tests
Finally runs
You can't tell me this isn't pitiful. That is good signal. Should be able to be usable. Hell on Verizon with 3G same spot I used to be -90 and worked fine.
T-Mobile used to work here, not sure what happened.

Working great here.
I get anywhere from 25-65 down where I live with T-Mobile and I'm not in a major city what so ever
