[Q] How to update my phone's firmware?

Hi there guys. As you probably noticed,i'm new here,so pardon me if my question sounds noobish at the time,but I promise I'll learn from you guys! Thanks!
So,the question's simple. How do I update my phone's firmware? Don't wanna brick or possibly damage my phone here,as I just bought a couple of days ago. So,is there any risk to update the phone's firmware? Thanks bros!

either you can use KDZ or R&D for the official
or flash any custom ROM with CWM
(the tutor is already out there)
and the risk ? bootloop or brick maybe

Custom roms in simple terms are unofficial versions of the o/s modified or "cooked" by people who want to add or remove certain features or performance tweaks. The upside is you can find a ROM that suits your usage and aesthetic preferences. For more info read through some ROM threads and compare their features.
However there is always a chance something could go wrong even if you know what you are doing. So my advice would be to read and re read the instructions from rooting to flashing radios to flashing roms and look up the termanology until you think you understand and then read it all again. There are some good guides around that can givevyou the basics.
Otherwise you can wait until your carrier releases a official update.

Is it really that easy to install Cyanogenmod on your phone? But your phone have to be rooted first,right?
I saw the list with the firmware from various countries,but not mine,Malaysia. How do I solve this? I'm still suck with V10-a,which i think is the oldest firmware for OB.
Also,what are these baseband,kernel and build number thingies? Anything important? Thanks! Really starting to get interested in these things!

I think the following is related to malayians so you have to use an indonesian firmware :

- you can flash firmwares anytime whatever the situation
- to flash a ROM (cyanogen, nova...) you need the custom recovery mod called ClockworkMod alias CWM (available on the market via ROM Manager app, or my kit)
- and for CWM, root access is needed
once phone is rooted and CWM installed, phone potential is extended to the infinite. you can then install a lot of useful apps of more and customize your phone.
I think the general goal of all of that, is to optimize and extend possibilities as far as possible and then you'll be able to say that you "truly own" your phone

2 steps : root, flash recovery.

Ouh,wow,did that felt stupid,haha. So what you're saying is,after rooting my phone,I should get to installing ClockWorkMod Recovery,am I right? And the only way to install it is using the computer,connect it with the phone,and execute the UPK that you have provided in your download link. After that,I use the app,EzBoot,to boot into recovery mode,is this correct?

all right. as I said earlier, the recovery mode extends phone potential in an easy way. many ROMs and mods must be did via recovery. in fact, CWM helps you flashing files, roms, doing backups/restorations and more. jump the step and see by yourself.

By backing up,you mean backing up contacts and internal memory stuffs,right?
All right! Will root my phone as soon as my charge hits 100%! Using gingerbreak! Is the root reverse-able? I mean,can I unroot my phone once I root it?

you don't need 100% battery as long phone is plugged. for now, blackjack doesn't have a reverse process. but gingerbreak, yes, considering the fact you stay on v10a/b. you may try with the new superoneclick. the most radical method is still flashing a firmware (so you'll lose all stuffs)
and yes, backup any saveable thing. although CWM saves all datas, more safety is more safe

Excuse me but this is my first time here as well my first time having android device, and have no idea of it, i have a problem, i have galaxy note (Only 2 days) and i went to your forum to root my device (As i thought it is like jailbreak for my old iphone) and i downloaded the "CF-Root-SGN_ZS_MUL_KK1-v5.0-CWM5" as it was for my kernal vrsn, i followed the steps and all worked just fine...well after some friends got me worry about that rooting can damage your phone of am not aware of what i am doing, so i found a video of how to unroot using "DooMLoRD_v1_UNROOTING" and i followed the steps, so after i unroot one of those 2 icons was deleted, but CWM was not and each time i open it it says " CMW Manager needs SuperUser access to function ! If you have SU installed make sure CWM Manager is not blocked, then reboot and try again" so i use "DooMLoRD_v1_UNROOTING" again but nothing happened, then i use " CF-Root-SGN_ZS_MUL_KK1-v5.0-CWM5 " and clicked on (ALREADY ROOTED) and nothing changed then i thought that if again use (NOT ROOTED YET) then it will solve, but after the process finished, NOTHING CHANGED ONLY CWM icon is there.....
So i want to bring everything back to normal...HOW I CAN DO THAT..and please i am a beginner so please use easy steps with me....
Again Sorry for the inconvenience but have nooooooooooo idea what to do

go to www.sammobile.com find firmware version which you want and flash via odin

Try this guide for installing a ROM using Odin. Worked for me and many others.

Flashing using the guide removes root but leaves personal data untouched.

Your friends are clueless. Rooting won't destroy your phone. Should've kept it rooted.

Backup a Samsung Ace rooted and not?

Bit of a no brainer, but one that I never really thought about, but how do I back up my Samsung Ace which is NOT rooted?
Bit scared of the thought of rooting at the moment for two reasons which are I may brick my toys and I may void my warranty. I'm not bothered about the warranty as its not as important as owning a brick.

I don't know a way to do what you ask. But owning a stock firmware that can be flashed trough Odin its like having a non rooted backup with stock recovery. The only other thing that may be different is carrier system apps which you can backup with titanium backup.
Also making a cwm recovery backup of your original rom is OK cuz you can always open the resulting .img files and take whatever you want to put it in system or data partitions with adb push. You can push everything except the superuser app and binaries and you're good to go.
Consider that if you actually brick your phone, a backup won't do any good because you can't restore it. If you can restore a backup, then your phone isn't really bricked is it?

ace is practically near impossible to brick.
unless u do something stupid that others already warned about like using rom manager, you're literally safe.
mine got bricked, but thats after thousands of time flashing anything day and night (i'm compiling kernel, thus need to test it by flashing after each compile). guess it couldnt take the beating any longer.
but for normal user, root is practically safe. i'd say go ahead and root it.

Its been well over a year since I first considered rooting my phone.
I have now come to the sad conclusion that I do not have enough memory on the phone for it to function normally and I now want to put everything onto an SD card to free up space on the phone.
So, what tutorials can I use to get a Samsung Ace S5830 with Gingerbread version 2.3.3
My latest firmware is PDA:KPY / PHONE:KPA / CSC:KP1 (XEU)
An idiot guide would be most appreciated as I need to do this ASAP. At the moment I only have enough internal memory to install one or two apps before I get the dredded Memory full pig icon.

I was worried at first because I used the link on the How-to and found that the zip file had a virus. However I downloaded the file from the youtube site and the Zip was virus free.
Can't bee too careful.
Once I've rooted, where can I go for info to backup my Phone's operating system, ROM I think its called.

when you root your phone you keep it clean, no need to wipe data/factory reset you need to flash CWM and do you first backup but check that your phone's model is GT-s5830 first and that you are runnig Gingerbread android version (2.3.x) please

[Q] JB advice

Hello everyone, im a noob on here and have a stock gingerbread (JW4) but rooted gt-i9000. im past my 24 months and can upgrade my phone at anytime but i love my sgs but am a bit annoyed that sammy are no longer creating firmware updates for it. so i decided to root it with the intention of finding a way of missing ICS and going straight to jellybean.
it seems the only way to go is by installing custom roms, but as im not particularly technical and not understanding the mechanics that well i dont want to / i am scared of messing with the phone without really knowing what im doing. ive heard of kernels but dont know what they are or what they do. ive dabbled with rooting but that is as far as ive got and im not convinced im not gonna break the phone if i go any further!
I got so far (thanks to a senior member on here in other threads) but have stopped for fear of not knowing what im doing and getting something wrong, so im hoping someone out there who's been in my position will be nice enough to help me further.
so basicly im asking for some help to find and install a version of JB that is near enough to what samsung would of supplied. ive seen it on a mates s3 and i like it thats why i want it on my phone, rather than buying the s3 (big brick of a phone)

first of all you shouldn't be afraid to mess your phone. it's really hard do brick it (believe me, i've semi-bricked my phone some times and it's running great now ). besides that, if you follow the tutorials exactly like as it's written you shouldn't get in trouble
second, do you have CWM recovery installed?

Hi and thanks for your reply! Yes ClockWorkMod root/recovery is where ive got to. The reason i finding this all so daunting is that is no 1 tutrial to follow, everyone seems to have a different way of doing it, either by experimentation or luck, and its just a bit confusing to a complete novice like me. I did try to find a How To section on here but it wasnt easy trying to trawl the 1000s of threads!

I was exactly the same at first but now I am on jellybean 4.2 the scariest thing as far as upgrading to jellybean is the error u get wen upgrading cwm wen u first flash the upgrade but just hold the 3 button combo for about 10 seconds an u should be back into recovery it may take a few Trys it did with me then reflash it twice to be sure any problems after that will have answers on their threads so as long as you follow the installation instructions you will be OK

the basic procedure to flash a new rom is this:
Put the file in your internal sdcard
Do a Nandroid Backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition + wipe dalvik) i also like to go to mount and storage and wipe /data, /datadata, /system, /cache.
flash zip from sdcard
reboot
if you are going to upgrade from froyo/GB to JB i recommend you to flash any ICS rom first (once i have a problem with upgrading from stock GB to MIUI JB

nand backup is just like saving the stage of your phone before you start to flash it so you can go back if you need to. if you have problem you can always flash a stock rom via odin but you will lose your data.
about the keyboard i don't know if you can have it with ics/jb but try swiftkey x. way better

Oh ok so no immediate panic about Nand backup then, however i prefer to write using XT9 or T9 setup (old skool) ill check out swiftkey see if allows it.

you should make an nand backup now! it's always a good idea to have one

Surprised you never lost your imei jumping from GB to JB missing ICS.
I've jumped like that before, but lost my imei and had no service, I only had to reinstate my efs folder, but it's done that 2 out of 2 times that I've done it. Maybe you were just lucky or something..

Oh really??? just checked an my IMEI number is still there and i still have service! Why would jumping do that? More to the point, should i back it up just in case and if so how should i back it up? what if i back it up now on JB, and it misses it when i go back to GB??
....got me worried bout that now!!

Its usually only jumping from GB to JB that does it. Just use a root file browser, i personally recommend solid explorer btw, go to root, find the folder called /efs and copy and paste it onto your external sd for safe keeping. Its no big problem if you do lose your imei then, just copy and paste it back and overwrite.

Need Help Please

Hey everyone, I stupidly tried to flash the Galaxy S5 experience 4.4.2 Rom to my ATT Note 3 SM-900a. I was using an older X-Note Rom and wanted to update my phone's firmware. I flashed it to the stock rom and now I can only boot into Safestrap. Is there anyway I can easily restore the device back to being functional? I can still see all my files on the device when using file manager on Safestrap, I just can't see the device on my computer.

Anybody have any idea what to do here? I've been trying to figure out what to do for the last 6 hours

You may get a better response if you use an informative subject line. That's the courteous thing to do in any forum. It lets people see at a glance whether your topic is one that they either want to learn about or can contribute knowledge to. Your subject line gives readers no clue what problem you're having. As a result, many readers won't bother to click on it at all.

If you can still open safestrap try loading a new rom.
Also please re-read the forum rules. You're only aloud to bump your threads once every 24hrs. Not every 3 hours. I know it's hard not to because you're in a panic. But it's the rules. We have to be patient.

I could get into SafeStrap but I wasn't able to load roms onto my device because it would not show up on my PC. Luckily I was able to find this site: http://www.androidrootz.com/2013/10/how-to-unrootunbrick-at-galaxy-note-3.html
If anyone else is impulsive enough to get into this situation, that link saved my life. I will never mess around with the stock rom again without fully reading the instructions.

I would just odin back to factory rom, that should get you back to the start....

I would say take the SD card out and load the X note zip and wipe and reinstall. Then once you have a working phone try again this time may want to create a backup first
