Noob question(s): Once a NC is rooted, do you switch back and forth between the "pre-rooted" screens and the Android launcher screen? Do you have to download a B&N reader or do you use the reader already there?
Thanks to everyone who shares their knowledge here - you guys are great!

answered your own question If you look at other people's screen shots, you can see a soft button right below the drawer icon... that button is Nook-specific and opens the regular Nook menu
Thank you, big - I hadn't looked at screen shots. I appreciate the answer and I am getting closer to taking the plunge.
You also have a Library app and Shop app that show up in any replacement launcher you install. About all you lose is the B&N homescreen, which you can still get to with Home Switcher.
I actually wish we could disable the popup menu...its redundant and I bump it often.

If you Run Zeam Launcher in "Full Screen" it is cover up the normal B&N Launcher. However you loss access to the soft back and menu buttons, and the notifications area.. Not really worth it.
During two 12 hour days of rooting and customizing two CNooks, I ran across a procedure for removing the stock Nook apps. Now I can't find it. I'm not sure if that included the main soft button, as well, but I'm giving one of these to my 75 year old Mom and I don't want her confused if she hits this button all the time.
Really appreciate any help here!!!

AFAIK there's no way to remove the nook shortcut menu in the status bar. So what is she using it for, never reading on it? If you removed the apps and she did launch the shortcuts I guess it'd just fail to load the app, as they seem to be static shortcuts to those apps.
I would think when we get a custom ROM the status bar will be at the developers digression, and maybe someone will figure out a way to update the framework jar to remove the shortcut. My wife likes the shortcut, as her NC is 50/50 reader/tablet.
I installed the Kindle app on the Home screen, which I prefer. The Nook eReader is still there in the app tray, but because I changed the screen res, it screws up some of the texts in the Store and what not. The reader is still fine, though. But with the larger icons and text, it is WAY better. I tricked it out with the Aquarium Live Wallpaper and added Dolphin browser, which supports pinch zoom. And an email client; WeatherBug Elite, a Battery widget, a clock widget, and a WiFi toggle widgit went on the Home screen, as well - and I'm using Zeam for a launcher. I removed all the icons except the app drawer - and also changed the Volume Down button to be a Back and the Up to be a Menu. No SoftKeys for me. BTW: I set the lcd res to 220 using LCDDensity - far better than the 250 someone mentioned on the forum. I still see the time and the notification balloon - albeit, a bit truncated, but it works. I run SetCPU, though not really sure I need to.
I use Quick Settings for Volume.
I'm missing a few things:
1) Love to find out how to do a screen capture.
2) Desperately want Flash.
3) Desperately want Bluetooth.
And, really want to noop the nook shortcut launcher soft key - or preferably the whole status bar. I don't need it, with all the widgets, but I'd be happy to have it as long as the shortcut launcher softkey was nullified.
I'm planning to get NC for my parents of the same age like your mom as well.
They would use it for email and web browsing while traveling.
I hope you will succeed and share
Cool - and of course I'll share! Fact is, it's not a deal-breaker by any means. I
'll just tell her to avoid hitting that menu button. And if she does, she just clicks on the screen or clicks the button again to get rid of it. I'm really more interested in Flash - which I'm sure will be in 2.2, whenever they release it for the CN - and BT. Which I really want for the new BT headphones I bought for my lost Archos 70.
post deleted. it repeated my last one.
Screen capture - hold down the large physical "n" button, and then very quickly press the volume down button. It will store the .png screenshot file in a directory called "Screenshots" in the system storage.
Now, if someone knows how to do video capture of the screen, please let us know.

Awesome... thanks for posting this. I previously download ShootMe unaware of this functionality.
I did it all from my Nookie...
I started a new thread because I'm not sure if the app is not 100% compatible with a rooted nook.
When browsing, xScope will enter full screen mode, hiding the tab and address bars also the control panel on the bottom. I have full screen disabled in the options, so does anyone know what's going on?
There's an option regarding the notification bar. I can hide everything but the bottom bar.
The only issue I'm currently having is that a lot of the menus are white text on white backgrounds. If you press and hold you can see the menu entries which is workable for now - I've contacted the developer about the issue.
OK, I see what's going on now...
When I enter a text field, the keyboard comes up. When I'm done, the bars dissapear.
I've changed the settings so that the menu button brings them back, but is this normal behavior? The bars should come back on their own.
In xscope full screen, I have trouble pressing the buttons on the bottom edge of the screen, does anyone have that problem?
Sent from my Nook Color!!
Same issue with the buttons in the lower corners of the screen. I have issues with other apps also where the buttons are in corners, bottom or not. Just seems app specific.

What I did was move the bottom bar to the top where it is easier to press the buttons and then I increased the screen density to 210. That makes the buttons larger and easier to press.

Yes. Really sucks. I love xScope and have had to switch to Dolphin Mini because of this problem. I love how xScope does text redraws quickly and without fuss. Not many other browsers do that.

I did that but find that it really makes it much more difficult to use the browser when you have to constantly reach for the top. I love how Dolphin Mini allows me to keep both hands at the bottom to do everything I need.
I want to have an experience where my hands aren't having to jump all over the place just to move along quickly through my daily reading.

I had also moved my bar to the top and its much easier to use for me...
Otherwise, I like the browser, but still haven't figured out how to easily close tabs.
I honestly find Dolphin a bit easier to use..

For xscope, just tap a tab to close it.

I bought a Color Nook for my husband when they first came out, to replace his B/W Nook. Unfortunately he wasn't able to use the onscreen page turning. He has MS and it is too difficult to hold the tablet and swipe the screen without activating undesired functions.
What would be ideal is a stand and some way to control the page turning. I don't know if a wifi keyboard would work or not but I saw a mention of the wiimote in an earlier thread. Is that a possibility? (A wireless mouse might not be usable for someone confined to bed.)
I do have an old Android phone that I could use if there was a remote application, along the line of the Roku remote. I also have a Nokia N900 that I could sacrifice, if there is a Linux way to control the Nook and I do have lirc installed. I'm not a developer but I could probably do some simple scripting, if necessary.
Any links or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Terry
tapping on the left side of the screen will bring you back a page. tapping on the right will bring you forwards. you don't need to swipe
The Aldiko ebook reader app allows you to set the volume keys for page forward and page back. It's under Settings --> More --> Use Volume Keys. Hope that helps, should eliminate the need to swipe the screen.

I guess I wasn't very clear in my description. He has very little feeling in his hands, so when touching the screen he either taps too hard or not hard enough. It gets frustrating for him when things go bonkers because he can't control it. His balance is bad, too, so he tends to sway when reaching out, so his hands might land anywhere.
For some disabled people, this might be a very nice reader but there isn't a once size fits all.
That's why I wondered if my old G1 could control the reader. It would fit snugly in his hands and the Nook could be on a stand.

I will check that out. the volume buttons are not as accessible as the bezel buttons but worth a try.
Thanks,
Terry
you might try the new bluetooth enabled cm7 rom and use a wiimote to turn pages. I will be testing that out later this week when my wiimote gets in. I have neck problems so I need to keep the nook on an eye level stand.
Terry,
What if you were able to make him a large soft conductive stylus? It might be easier to him instead of trying to point with his fingers.

You can also buy conductive silver thread on ebay for about 2 bucks.
I'm working on a new free split keyboard designed for people who use connectbot or have other full keyboard needs. It's out on the market now. I've heard there are problems on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I'm still waiting for a logcat from someone with a tab to send me a log cat. It currently only supports 1280x (xoom) resolution devices. Any suggestions on changes to the key layout? I'll probably be adding a Dvorak mode soon (the original version had it).
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.doubtech.inputmethod.latin&feature=search_result
This is an early release of a free Holo themed split keyboard. It currently only supports 1280x800 screens (Xoom, Iconia Tab, etc).
Notable Features
* Selectable Themes (Holographic, Gingerbread, Stone)
* Multiple keyboard modes (split, full, and one handed)
* 100% customizable key and key label color combinations. See the "Colorize" options in Theme Settings on the keyboard preference page.
Keyboard Selection Gestures:
* Swipe right or left to toggle keyboards swipes must be pretty large (avoids accidental keyboard changes)
Change Log
Added support for setting key background and label colors.
--
Fixed a bug where keyboard wouldn't reload after a full system reboot.
--
Removed gesture mode in favor of using swipes for switching keyboards. Gestures were preventing some multitouch capabilities from working.
--
Added ability to change keyboard theme (see Keyboard Theme option in preferences).
Rearranged keyboard so space and other functions are farther from the notification bar.
I am trying it out now and its so far better than the tablet keyboard free I was using. I like the predictive text, but it lags a little.
Been checking it out for the last couple hours. Buttons are a little small but I really like the look and function. Great job.
I like it because it flows more with the HC UI and design.
I know it's an early build so I took that into account.
Right off the bat, you can tell that it just LOOKS nice. Functionally, I have only a few issues which don't take away from the effort that the Dev is putting into this.
The keys are a little small so there is more room for making typo's.
The auto-correct needs some more polish.
I use Thumb Keyboard 4 and like the ability to switch between 1 of 3 layouts (Split, Full and One Handed).
There is a bit more wasted space between the key sections which could be used to make the keys slightly larger.
Regardless of those minor issues, I have been using it all day and quite honestly am getting used to it and am liking what I see, a LOT.
I'll keep this installed and updated to keep an eye on what comes out. A lot of promise and if this is a preview of what else this Dev can do, keep an eye on their other stuff!!!
Ok, why do keyboard devs HATE putting a comma key on the main keydoard sceeen? LOL!
Oh, other than the comma thing, when pressing and holding the backspace key, it does the repeat.
Also, when ending a sentence, doing a dounle space, it does not perfoem an auto period.
Does not auto capiltalize the letter i when placed on it's own.
I'm going to keep using it though!!!!!!

The keys are that small so there is little stretching to reach the main keys. I could possibly make this customizable, but that would be down the road (not a simple task).

What do you think of the layouts on the attached screenshots for one handed mode?
For full I usually just switch to the regular keyboard, but it wouldn't be hard to add a full keyboard mode as well.
I love the look but i would love for:
Fast backspacing (only one at a time right now)
Make the .com and ?123 larger buttons
And possibly make the letter keys a little?diffdrent from number keys as it is a somewhat hard to tell
Put ! On the main keyboard
Other than that amazing!

New Version on Market
I fixed the problem with backspace not repeating.
New Release
I put the latest version on the market. It includes a new full keyboard and a swappable one handed keyboard. You can now swype or use gestures to switch between keyboards. Let me know if there's anything about keyboard layouts that you would like to see changed.
Great work but there needs to be a little change between letters and everything else. The different colors make the stock one easy to use. If you improve your ease of use, you can start charging money( and possibly donating it to your favorite charity?)

Are you thinking possibly a slightly lighter color for numeric characters vs alpha characters or are you requesting a theme more like the stock keyboard altogether?
Ok, love this keyboard with a couple of exceptions :
1) space key is too close to the bottom, I keep touching the home key or the notification bar...
2) I accidentally switched it to full size and I want it split again...I don't even know how I got it to full...
Other than that this is awesome.

There are several ways to switch keyboard modes.
* There is a keyboard button on the bottom row of each keyboard that will switch to the next keyboard mode. If you want a list of keyboard types (Split, One Handed, or Full) you can long press the keyboard key to get a popup menu.
* You can also switch keyboards by swiping to the right or left.
* You can go straight to the split keyboard by drawing a S on the keyboard
Would a lock keyboard mode button help with the accidentally swapping keyboard problem?

New Version on Market
Turns out the last couple revisions didn't get released (goofy new multiapk changes to market publishing).
This version includes:
* Ability to change themes. People who like the gingerbread theme can now switch to it if they go to Keyboard Settings->Keyboard Theme
* There's now space between the spacebar and other core bottom row keys and the notification bar.
* You can disable gestures so you don't accidentally change keyboards or you just don't like gestures. (See "Disable Gestures" in Keyboard Settings)
* You can lock the selected keyboard so you don't accidentally change keyboards. (See "Lock keyboard to selected keyboard?" in Keyboard Settings)
* Colors on space and other control keys have changed in holo mode.

New version out. I changed the gesture method for switching keyboards. Using actual gestures was breaking multitouch features of the keyboard so I switched to using swipe gestures for switching keyboard. This method is also less sensitive so you are less likely to accidentally switch keyboards.
I think I found a bug. Might be the xoom or the rom not sure.
Issue is if I reboot, I lose the setting for this keyboard. I tried to re-enable this keyboard in settings but it was not in the list. I had to uninstall it after trying to clear the cache in applications which didn't work.
Only uninstall/install brought it back.
Anything you would like me to check or test?
