Reason for the stuttering? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone.
I have a little theory on scrolling lag on our XZ.
After browsing XDA for a while using Tapatalk 4 Beta, i've noticed something. Scrolling through a long thread only having text is no problem. There is no/barely stuttering. That made me observe the behaviour a while. If there's images, the device starts to break down. Scrolling suddenly gets slow and stuttering because pictures are not loading fast enough. It's not just tapatalk. Hell it's even the play store. I can scroll to the bottom of the front page without every seeing any pictures, they are simply loading too slow (causing the device to lag). I've tried youtube and a few other apps, same case.
This is happening on all roms. No matter what i've tried. Every stock rom (from .350 to .423), every CM / AOSP based rom. The result is always the same. Now why is it that images load so slow? It can't be my internet. I'm on wifi and my internet connection is more than fine as you can tell from the picture :

Does anyone have a clue how to resolve this issue? Or maybe atleast confirm my theory?
I've found some tweaks, i will try them later and see if they do any good (which i doubt, because most of the are bull****).
I'm using PAC Custom 0724

Please report if you are experiencing the same, or have any opinion on this matter.

Yeah, I used a HTC one recently and there is no such lag there. So I'd like to know how to fix this too. (the HTC one was at a store)

You can fix it by editing framework.jar and disabling scrolling cache.

There is lot of tutorials here in xda just search for smooth scrolling mod.

Another (well easier & safer) solution could be just add this one line in build.prop:
persist.sys.scrollingcache=4
(1=cache always on // 2=cache on many times // 3=cache off many times // 4=cache always off)
Reboot and wait 4 minutes.

Maybe you wish also add the following lines, after backup the original build.prop:
debug.performance.tuning=1
video.accelerate.hw=1
ro.min_pointer_dur=1
Finally, where is written:
debug.composition.type=dyn
You could change it to:
debug.composition.type=gpu (but this last change perhaps isn't ideal for some apps, and maybe it uses more battery than the default "dyn" option).
Keep in mind that a butter experience is a goal very difficult to achieve. I think that one reason why many users prefer some other launchers is that stock launcher is one of the few ones that support Sony advanced (and heavy) widgets. More heavy widgets (I'm sad to admit it) means more lags.

i get scrolling lag in settings lol.
also, if scrolling cache enabled messes with the smoothness of scrolling, why did the manufacturer enable it by default?
my understanding is having cache enabled will consume more RAM, but allows smoother scrolling?
just a bit confused because i have read a lot of different things

Sorry to say that, but I'm restoring the original stock. I've tried many, many mods in build.prop, and although I saw some improvements, they're little ones, so I'll wait for the smoother Android 4.3 and its 1080p full support (with faster redraw and OpenGl ES 3.0).

Harness the gpu of your phone
After the success of my Audio Engine, I decided to dedicate myself to improve another part of the phone: the graphics.
We all know that if something is beautiful intrigues us and draws us; therefore, if our phone can show the images we see every day in the best way, our user experience improves!!
Each phone has hardware limitations, large or small they are... but also in the low-end devices you can do so much in the SW to improve the user experience.
In what way?
Certainly the various engine tweaks help, but what would happen if the files are being developed that enable every millimeter of the potential of the gpu?
In this case there is the Pure™ Graphic HD system
How does it work?
This system is a. Zip file less than 300 Kb big, that once extracted brings significant improvements to the system graphics. No themes, no apps, only functions that take advantage of the best of our mobile gpu
Features
- Enable GPU rendernig
- Enable dithering but did not affect consumption!!
- Use the GPU for the management of the touch
- Improve video HW render
- It allows you to play ported ARMV7 games without lags problems
- Increase scores on the AnTuTu graphic rank
- In MDPI devices improves the density pixels and brightness
- Eliminates lag system with the generator of video entropy
- Liquify the UI

Compatibility
This Engine should works on any GB/ICS/JB (and I hope KK in future) roms of any devices

[FIX] [APP] [5.0] Moto G Minfree Fixer

With this commit which is merged since the 07/Feb/2015 Nightly the app became redundant. Thanks for your feedback!
Hi everyone,
I wrote a small app for all those having RAM/reloading issues on 5.0/CM12 based ROMs. The app was originally developed for the 4G variant but should also work on the "normal" Moto G. The source is here and a direct link to the pre-compiled app can be found attached to this post.
But what does this app do?
In short, the cause of frequent app redraws seems to be wrongly set permissions of two files which avoid the Low Memory Killer to work as intended. Apart from that the default values in those files are set too high. A long explanation can be found here.
This app fixes both problems and automates basically everything after the device has booted up: It applies right permissions to /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree (660) and writes reasonable LMK values into it. It is meant as a convenient way to fix the problem without having to hassle around with shell scripts.
I wrote it modular, so auto apply and LMK value writing can be switched off, of course

i do agree with @BlueFlame4
as per original development sub forum definition the thread qualifies all the aspects.
The Original Development area is intended for posting of new work, which isn’t derived from existing work on XDA (in whole or significant part). The reason for this is that feedback from a huge number of users indicated their frustration in finding the cutting-edge development taking place to bring new features to their devices, particularly when the first few pages were full of threads for various very similar ROMs. This makes it harder for users and developers alike to find the actual development, usually going on in threads which are less attractive to less experienced users.

I'm actually not familiar with GPE/non-GPE since I only own a Moto G 4G which doesn't have that distinction.
@ all: Well, the 220 permissions are actually intended by Google but CM broke something else (namely the Low Memory Killer) so the 660 permissions act as a workaround. I'll look into it this weekend.
work fine! thanks
Installed on Stock 5.0.2 firmware, testing it now, so far so good.
Used and suggested on my topic of euphoria os rom
It seems that the ram is a little better now but..
Example:
I open whatsapp, line, then hangout and bum! Whatsapp and line need refresh when i re-open it xD
If i don't open hangout, i can open another app without have that problem. However, i really don't understand lollipop ._.
If i have 300 or more Ram Mb free, why it kill app randomly -.-

As far as I can see, killing/not killing on Lollipop seems to be app-dependant, or kinda like that. I saw a review of a 3 GB phone which kept in memory asphalt 8 but killed Chrome every time... and more than 1.3 GB of memory was still free. :silly:

Galaxy S6 Build.prop Ram fix works for the Note4

So this was posted awhile back on reddit, and I know that not everyone uses reddit. So might as well post it here. If it has already been posted, then just delete mine. I looked hard and found no one on here talking about it at all.
So someone on the s6 XDA forum found out a 6 line edit to the build.prop that fixes a memory leak in Touch-Wiz. A popular user on the galaxynote4 subreddit (u/onbeskarakterl) tried it for ****s and giggles and it worked. (Can't post the link because I'm a new user to xda :C )
This is all you have to do, and yes it requires root. These lines go/are under #DHA Properties. To edit these lines I suggest ES file Explorer (with root mode enabled) or Build.Prop editor from the google play store.
I changed this line's value:
HTML:
ro.config.dha_empty_max=36
I manually added these lines below it:
HTML:
ro.config.dha_cached_max=12
ro.config.dha_th_rate=2.3
ro.config.dha_lmk_scale=0.545
ro.config.sdha_apps_bg_max=70
ro.config.sdha_apps_bg_min=8
ro.config.oomminfree_high=7628,9768,11909,14515,16655,20469
This has worked for both device models (snap and exy) on the sub-reddit. If you're using a custom rom and the lines don't exist, just add them. Make sure you do a nandroid backup through TWRP or CWR before attempting. I'm not responsible for the kiddies that miss a letter and soft brick/brick their stuff. This fix has made monumental changes for some, and miniscule on others. For me, it made my recents and many other gestures of the phone much more responsive. It almost feels like a whole different beast.
I dont even know what a memorz leak is ? I just know that my note 4 sucks compared to my ex-note 3.
i tried this but i dont see any improvements on my phone..

Like I said above, it doesn't remove leaked ram. It changes the way the ram is handled making it faster. For some people this fix solved 80% of their lag issues on TW, for others it did nearly nothing.

It's not going to save any battery life. The screen still has to push all its pixels, regardless of the resolution it is displaying. It may perform better in benchmarks and thats about it. If you want to save battery life, install a custom kernel and rom.

If you want to fix the lag, changing the screen resolution isn't the route you should take. You should root, then flash a custom kernel and rom. That will fix your lag and you won't have to stare at a blurry screen all day. If you want to fix the lag, one way or another you will unfortunately have to trade your warranty and Samsung pay. Just keep that in mind.
When using games for example, I use the Game Tuner app and this helps a lot for it reduces the resolution used on games.
Has anyone found a way to go from 2k to 1080p on the overall ui, not just one games?
Thanks in advance!

I dont get the people. Why are you insistly saying dont do that you dknt need that staff. If you know something about how we can change you can help but I dont beleive reducing the resolution not gonna help to performance. Maybe not in the battery side but it MUST be get extra performance on lower resolution. It helps on PC afaik.

Yes with root and resolution changer. You just don't seem the type that wants to deal with all that entails (on note 5 once you trip Knox, you'll have to deal with deep sleep issue on stock) , so don't. Just be happy with what you have.

One of the kernel modifiers that works by altering setting in RAM. You can get improvements for sure but be careful.
I used to run a kernel modding app in KitKat ROM but now on Lollipop the phone runs nice without it so I don't use a kernel tuning app anymore.
I have Xposed but even then, only a minimal number of modules. You can create an unstable device by these types of mods.
Can you tell us which settings exactly you have in L Speed? A screenshot would be enough because when I tried it I didn't see any improvement

I'm probably as big of a skeptic as you get when it comes to these miracle "speed up your phone now!" kind of apps, but hear me out:
I installed this after it popped up whilst lazily scrolling through the Play Store. I remembered reading a post title about it somewhere and figured I might as well laugh at the massive scam when it starts asking for IAPs or something.
But wow, it really helps. I mean it has only been running for about 30 minutes, so I can't say much for the battery life improvements etc, but here's what has noticeably improved thus far:
- "Smoothness": Enabling the UI tweaks rewarded me with buttery smooth scrolling, window switching, even SwiftKey (which, whilst being a great keyboard for a multi-lingual, has always fallen behind others in terms of smoothness) is now on IOS levels of responsive, for now. I'm running 5.1.1 (B324), which is already a massive improvement over the choppy mess that was 4.4.4, but this made animation smoothness on-par with the latest flagships.
- App loading times: Vastly improved. The HAM7 isn't bad at this, but not exactly great either. I'm assuming it's the IO tweaks that 'fixes' this, as app loading times are way quicker. Even the app switching window, which is notoriously slow to load up on the HAM7, opens up very hastily (not instantly, but MUCH faster than usual), even when you have 3-5 pages of apps open. Hell, even the camera doesn't waste time opening.
And perhaps the most impressive improvement: Faster streaming. I know, this sounds like snake-oil, right? Wrong. I live in East Africa, our internet here is horrifically slow compared to European countries (my company has a 7mb/s line, which is one of the fastest lines available in our area). Streaming a video in 1080p is something one can only dream of. I took a quick look at YouTube, ramping the quality up to 1080p, and it plays! I mean I still have to leave it for around ten seconds to buffer a little, but after that I'm golden. I'm baffled, I honestly don't want to believe it, but yet it's happening right before my eyes. I will test this on other streaming services (Netflix and ShowBox) later and update this post with my findings.
So there you go. A totally skeptical non-believer converted in 30 minutes. I can't tell you how this works, all I can say is that it does, at least in my case. The HAM7 running 5.1.1 really isn't bad in terms of every day performance, but this makes it a lot more bearable (I hate EMUI).
I'll update this post with further findings tomorrow.

Impossible. This application uses modifications that are impossible to make or you're unrooted.
I think what he is saying he hasn't used L Speed and gets a better score?

Lots of factors affect it. Rooting and modding can slow it down, for instance I can assure you installing ViPER4Android will slow it down, but sounds oh so good.
Don't use viper. But yes depending on the amount of apps etc does affect it. Using always on display now and love it and not really much of a battery hog, I love coming back to my phone and don't even touch it just glance to see if I have missed anything.
