I've successfully set up my Chromecast with my Gnex hotspot and my Galaxy S 4G, and Netfilx and Google Play Music stream perfectly: however, Youtube and Google Play Movies and TV is tricky: it takes too long to load when it works. I got a Youtube video to work but only once. Tabcasting works but it lags. I think we need a thread that troubleshoots this type of problem, but if I'm wrong, please disregard this thread. If it's needed, please share your experiences here. The screenshots I'm attaching is my current setup (I switch my one sim card between phones): in this case, my Galaxy S 4g is the hotspot, my Gnex is MyPhone, MT6451 is my laptop #1, VPCM11AX is laptop #2, FranciscosiPhone is my iphone, and the Azurewave Tech is (I'm assuming) Chromecast.
Update: gnex as hotspot, s 4g as source with Aircast streams movies from SD card.

May I ask how you managed to get this thing to work? I've tried multiple methods for Wifi tethering using the Galaxy Nexus and all have failed. I have tried Wifi Tether 3.4 and the stock tethering option. The errors include, AP Isolation needing to be turned off, UPnp not configured, and no connection. Once I do eventually get connected, its slow and just kicks off while trying to reload. Are there any additional settings in the wifi tether app that need to be addressed? Any help would be great. Thank you.
No need for apps. I'm running cm10.2 on my gnex and 10.1 on my galaxy s 4g. Try to setup with the chromecast app but don't change the Chromecastxxxx network name. That is one problem. The next problem is "connection failed" due to password. That's fine. Double check your gnex password and try again. If you get try again just press cancel and you'll be set. It's a bit tricky but I've done it several times with both phones. If you get stuck, let me know and I'll post a video or something.
After I pressed cancel, I was set up. The first time I did it, I didn't know I was set up until I noticed the app said "Ready to Cast." Then, after resetting the Chromecast to troubleshoot some problem, I realized that changing the ChromecastXXXX name is the main problem.

I'd hide those MAC addresses if I were you. Not that we're neighbors or anything ;p
Yeah I use my One's hotspot to connect the two as well. Funny my LTE is faster than my router.

LOL! I thought about that but got lazy. Are you able to stream YouTube and Google Play Movies and TV with your hotspot?

Yeah, runs fine. Though, naturally my battery drains quickly.
I've tried this method and it doesn't work for me. Left the chromecast's ID as default, was able to get it to connect, but the Chromecast itself is never recognized by any device. I can refresh or toggle wifi and eventually it will show up as an option in Google Music/Youtube, but then trying to connect to it produces an error message.
I have tried using a Galaxy Note on T-Mobile run tethering and surprise surprise, it works, but because they don't have unlimited data like I do on Verizon, it's not an option at all. Seems like it might be an issue specific to the GNex.

On the gnex, try going to settings-wifi-advanced-wifiFrequencyBand: 2.4 GHz only

So with this method you used your galaxy s as the hotspot and the gnex to setup the chromecast correct? I don't have a second phone to do that, have you gotten this to work by using the windows chromecast setup app? I can't connect...with or without a password on my hotspot and using 2.4ghz only.
Please explain how you set this up step by step
Currently, I'm using the gnex as a hotspot. I originally used chrome on Ubuntu to set up. Actually, any setup will work. I switched to see what works best and I think the gnex hotspot is more stable. You will, however, need a 2nd phone or computer to setup. Sometimes setup gets a bit tricky and says setup failed but that may not be correct, as I showed in the screenshots.

I've gotten it to connect to my gnex using the default name like you said, but I'm not getting a cast button on any app (using my nexus 7)

Thanks, I'll try this out when I get home and see how it fairs.
I tried the 2.4Ghz setting and the Chromecast app doesn't recognize the Chromecast at all. Even though it's set up and connected to the network, the app will detect it as needing to be setup, even though Chromecast displays "Ready to Cast." I really think it has to be related to some Verizon LTE thing because I don't really know why it would instantly work on a T-Mobile Galaxy Note but not for a Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Doesn't really make any sense. I don't think using CM10.1 has anything to do with it either. I also tried CM10.2 with the same results.
OK. If you are "Ready To Cast" and you can't, this is what I found: YouTube, Google movies, and music are "blocked" if you don't have a paid hotspot plan, but Netflix and casting from your computer should work. On my sim, I had about 99gb of data and Google doesn't cast but Netflix and tab casting works. On my wife's sim, the hotspot on her plan is still less than 500mb so I can stream. This is on T-Mobile.

I'm convinced this will never work with my gnex as a hotspot, its just teasing me. It worked great with my girlfriends Rezound as a hotspot, but thats gone from a mugging in Colombia last week, and now she is getting a gnex

Thanks for the help. That reasoning probably makes sense. It's fine because in a few months I'll have a dedicated wifi connection and won't have to resort to my phone, so I'll just have to wait it out. Thanks for all your help!

Hi Folks,
I got in on the gold rush and got a chromecast from my local bestbuy. The thing works beautifully and flawlessly for streaming you tube and chrome tabs, bute when it cones to casting netflix....thats when all hell breaks loose....
No matter what device laptops (win7 and 8), phone (android), tablet (android)....while casting netflix the chromecast is stuck on the initial red loading screen and best of all takes my network down....till i unplug the chromecast!
So now, not only am i stuck with a chromecast that does not cast netflix but resetting my router over and over again everytime I try casting netflix.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Just FYI: I am using a D-Link DI-524 as the router, 2.4 GHz bandwidth.
Have tried signing out of netflix on every device, then factory resetting the cc, signing back into netflix.
Factory resetting my router, resetting my network, also the modem...... Nothing works!!!!!
Thanks in advance for all those who help.
I'm having the same problem. Only I can actually play a video, for about ten minutes, and then it takes my network down. What it seems to do is, the Chromecast makes it's own network and all my devices try to connect to that instead. I've noticed that toggling airplane mode will make it reconnect to my network, but the problem persists.

Find the "chromecast" network in your network settings for you other devices and click forget network. Then you won't need autolysin mode. Trying to connect to the network Chromecast creates won't help anything. The android Chromecast app will automagically connect to the Chromecast network as needed.

I've been using the chromecast for about 2 weeks now and this happened today for the first time. (the only diff was that i set a router with DDWRT and VPN set in order to see US netflix content since i'm not in the US)
All you have to do is reboot the chromecast and the issue goes away
(use the android chromecast app to reboot, disconnecting and reconnecting it did not work for me)
Hope this helps you guys:good:
The only issue with rebooting the Chromecast is I'm disconnected from it! So when I attempt to go in to the Chromecast app it says there are no chromecast on the network.

Problem Solved
Seems that the old router was a problem. I switched out my old D-Link DI-524 with a new Motorola SB-302 and the problem seems to have disappeared!
Still very weird that no issues with youtube or tab casting only netflix wouldnt work!!
But I am a happy camper now

I am having the same problem you described with Netflix. I've done some searching online for a fix and tried everything I've found but with no success. My router and modem are both very old (modem 2004, router 2006), so I have ordered some new ones from Amazon, in the hopes that it will fix the issue, since it worked for you. It is strange that Youtube and tab casting work great, just not netflix. I will try to remember to come back to this thread when I have the next equipment and the problem is (hopefully) fixed, so that others may find this solution, too. Enjoy your casting and thanks for posting your solution.

I get the red loading screen on my rooted Nook Color, and it takes forever to start responding on my rooted Gingerbread phone. Win7 computers and WinXP laptop don't have a problem with Netflix. However, there are apparently some shows that won't cast from Chrome tabs. My sister ran into one last night, it sent us to the incompatible technology page. I was able to finally cast it from the phone though.
Did they change the Chromecast network thing? I haven't seen it showing up lately.

I use strongvpn they have the instructions on the site, it's fairly a simple setup
the netflix in canada thread has the steps for it also, here are the links for both PPTP and OpenVPN setups
http://strongvpn.com/setup_dd-wrt_pptp.shtml
http://www.strongvpn.com/setup_dd-wrt_openvpn.shtml
A friend got it working with unblock-us, for some reason it I was not able to get it to work this way, it would always hang loading the stream at about 45%
hope it helps.
Sorry for necro but did anyone found a solution for this problem yet? I coudnt find anything consecutive in any other threads.. I got netflix geo restrictions passed by mediahint chrome addon, everything is working fine for couple of months now. Today i bought chromecast to enjoy it on my fat ass new big screen and everything (tabs and youtube) is working apart from netflix, which is basically the reason why i bought it. Same problem as all, stuck on red loading screen while netflix on laptop hangs for a while and goes back to the home page.

Hello everyone
To whom it may concern:
My name is Jé and I am having issues with this Chromecast. I was able to successfully set it up and begin streaming videos successfully via YouTube and Google Play Video( I rented a movie to try it out). I do not recall if this issue occurred on the YouTube video but upon casting a video from my T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 to my T.V it plays just fine, as with YouTube I was able to hit my home screen and send texts, etc and the Cast window still be in my notifications panel.
Well I got a phone call and went to answer it and the Chromecast window disappeared . I tried going into Google Play and even the Chromecast application and got nothing….I even restarted my phone and the movie was still PLAYING!...o and I was OFF Wi-Fi! My device said Wi-Fi was on but my data was coming from 4G LTE!
Again the movie still played with no hiccups or nothing even when I restarted my cellphone and played just fine when I accepted the phone call.
I had to unplug it from the back of my T.V, re connect it, and then go back into it works just fine I scrub to where I was and again after a short while the cast icon disappears but the movie is still playing and the phone drops from Wi-Fi. I even turned Wi-Fi off this time and it still played just fine! This is weird! I put a call into Google but to no avail.
I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue. Why does the icon go away? How was it even working with me being off Wi-Fi ?

Not sure why the icon goes away, it should stay on your Notifications: Ongoing, but if your phone's WiFi is dropping out, that's probably why.
As for why the movie continues to play, this is normal. In normal circumstances* Chromecast does not stream from your phone/tablet's data connection. Instead your phone/tablet "hands off" the request (YouTube link, etc) to Chromecast and Chromecast goes online and retrieves it for playback on its own. Essentially, Chromecast is streaming the content directly from the source, rather than things going to your phone/tablet them to Chromecast. At the same time, your phone/tablet keeps a status/control connection open to the Chromecast so it can show you what's happening (play position, etc) and control it.
Likely the cast icon is disappearing when your phone drops off WiFi, as it loses the status/control connection to Chromecast.
* exceptions to this are apps that stream phone/tablet-stored content like AllCast/AirCast/KoushCast (currently requires root and KyoCast mod) and Chrome browser tab casting (this gets transcoded on-the-fly by the PC then sent to Chromecast)

my Wi-Fi does not drop its gotta be something to do with this app because it never drops when I am just connected to it regularly. And the fact that the icon goes away is annoying I missed so many parts of the movie because I had no way of scrubbing back unless I unplugged it from the back of the TV

Maybe I misunderstood, but you said your phone dropped off WiFi... I get that your router/AP isn't dropping the WiFi signal (I hope), otherwise there'd be all sorts of other problems.

Regardless, you shouldn't have to reboot your Chromecast - just re-launch whatever app was playing, then tap the Cast icon to connect again - it should then link up and give you status.
HBO GO seems to remember where you were at even across device reboots - must save it in your profile.
Try this:
Launch YouTube
Find a sufficiently-long video (at least a few minutes)
Tap the Cast icon to start casting it to your Chromecast
Watch the playback indicator - it should be counting...
Check TV - it should be playing
Go back to home screen
Kill YouTube app via task manager (or reboot your phone, if you want)
Check TV - it should still be playing
Launch YouTube app again
Don't choose a video, just tap the Cast icon to connect to your Chromecast
That should get your back to the video that's currently playing and give you a playback indicator that shows that the video never stopped playing

Yes you just might be on to something. But I did go back into Google play movies and clicked the movie and it started playing from my phone ! At a different point from my tv. And I went into the Chrome app and nothing, the cast wasn't even available. I keep my phone on wifi when I'm home. Never lost a signal, however since using this I noticed the wifi toggle was still on, but my device was on 4G. I turn off cast go back on wifi and it stays connected , this is weird lol

Wow, that is weird. The Cast icon should be available. I just launched something in YouTube then ran HBO GO and hit the Cast icon there (which then interrupted the YouTube that was already running on the TV, a little bit of a security/concurrency bump there).
What firmware build is your Chromecast on?

Run the Chromecast app and select your device - it'll tell you the build at the bottom.
Likely you're on 13300, or newer if there is one. I had all kinds of weird WiFi trouble with the first build (12072) - I couldn't even get through setup, but it all got better after I got 13300. Now it occasionally give me "connected by can't reach the Internet" after boot but it reconnects in a couple of minutes.

You're welcome. Hope you get it figured out soon. My Chromecast experience (past the setup troubles I described earlier) has been solid so far. Only hiccup currently is sometimes if I'm casting from YouTube it doesn't smoothly transition from the end of one video to the start of the next and I have to disconnect and reconnect to the Chromecast (switch back to phone/tablet/computer then go back to cast).
I have the same problems, mostly in the netflix app. But also a lot times the icon doesn't even show up in netflix (but also youtube) so I can't start casting. When I connect using the chromecast app, it does find the device.
I am on the latest fw and it is plugged in with the original charger.
The only thing I can think of, next to a faulty chromecast, might be the router, I have put dd-wrt on it so I can watch netflix from outside the us. But I don't have any other problems besides the same problem as the OP.

I had no issues until 13300 with the "robustness" update for wifi.
Others have reported this same problem -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2443288
I went through it for about 30 minutes last night, Chromecast coming and going.
Resetting wifi through the Chromecast app on two phones was sometimes making Chromecast appear - for a few minutes.
I reset my router and that's cured it for now.
And my router is 2 days old, I just upgraded from an older model.
So for me, problem didn't start until the 13300 update, is much better with the latest versions of Netflix and YouTube but is independent of phones and routers.
Doesn't happen a lot but it's a real problem.

Funny, those are the same symptoms I had that 13300 cured, guess you can't win em all.
One thing to add since you've changed routers - if you're using the same SSID is best to clear the WiFi configuration for your devices and set it up from scratch (looks like you've already done this on your Chromecast).
Some devices get confused when the BSSID is different from what it was set up with. Essentially your new router has a different MAC address and some devices get weird about it, connecting but dropping or just sitting in a half connected state.

Google just wrote this back to me, I will try this the next time I use the cast option on my device
Hello,
Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure speaking with you about your Chromecast device. With the issues that happened while watching the movie on Google Play, I have a quick question. Do you have battery saving mode on your phone? If so, please disable the battery saving mode.
The Battery Saver feature can be found under Apps > Settings > General Tab > Battery
Good tip on clearing the configuration for the SSID, not everyone knows to do that.
Google is just not getting it.
I have no battery saving anything going on, no task killing, no snake oil.
I've sat, watching the app in question and have watched the icon disappear.
Go to Chromecast right away, it's nowhere to be found.
But if you want to leave it alone, it'll play a two hour movie in that state.
Aside - maybe if I'd ran the previous version longer I'd have seen it there as well.

PS - I usually have close to 200 MB free ram, so it's not Android doing any task or service killing either.
I've captured several views of logcat during the problem.
Chromecast says it's timed out looking for it.
Netflix says E/venom media error.
Nothing to see there.

Very strange... Hopefully it's better nowadays, but my old HTC would stop doing stuff if it didn't have 300 MB or more free. *shrug*
Just for 100% certainty, can you check your Settings > WiFi > Advanced > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep setting?
Just received my chromecast have it set up but whenever I watch movies the help of avia it loses connection or "drops out" back to the chromecast main screen . Netflix and YouTube are OK.

Go to settings and enable wifi lock and the option below it
Basically it keeps your device awake so that Avia doesn't auto close or something

But wont that drain the battery?

Well do you have the same problem with YouTube or Netflix?
If so then it's probably router related not aVia....
If it doesn't happen with them then try another device if you have one to see if it is aVia related or Device specific.
So many variables that can cause what you're seeing that without seeing your router settings and android logs it's hard to way what is the problem.
I've had the paid-for version of Avia since the news broke of it gaining Chromecast support, but I just haven't really used it much at all since I've more than fallen in love with my Plex Media Server and my new PlexPass. Well, last night I had an update to Avia in the Play Store, updated it accordingly, then just decided to give it a quick whirl. I experienced the same thing as you...it would play stuff off my pc server just fine, but like clockwork, after playing a video for like 7-9 mins(wasn't keeping a close eye on the time lol) it would cut out and then the video would then stop playing thru my Chromecast in turn. I tried several times after that and it kept doing the same thing over and over again. After getting frustrated, I looked thru the Avia settings(before even seeing this thread) and I did what these guys are suggesting...I enabled the Wi-Fi lock setting & the other setting box below it as well. After ticking these boxes, I loaded up the same video off my pc server & it played all the way thru to the end without a single hiccup. I'm not saying this will most definitely work in your case, but it sure did help me.
Good Luck!

Yep. I'm having the same problem. Avia will play the video then a few minutes later, it will lose connection and cut back to the chromecast screen.

I was having the same problem but the above solved it for me. I've watched many shows since changing it and it hasn't disconnected since.
Having the same issue even with the wifi lock on.

Interestingly had this issue flag itself up in my household over Xmas. Everything worked fine via my N5 with Avia, but my brother on the same devices got a drop out after 7-8 minutes.
Logically we worked through this thread, with no joy. For some reason I told him to uninstall Battery Doctor, as I knew he'd optimised his phone for battery consumption.
We tried again and everything works flawlessly. Sorry I can't pinpoint exactly what the specific issue was but this solved the dropping out issue for us.
Hope that helps someone.
Anyone having the issue of when starting a video in avia and then trying to cast it makes all devices on network drop there connection with the WiFi network? Any suggestions would help. Thanks

Sounds like a router issue. Perhaps insufficient bandwidth or a general inability to handle large wireless load.
What router do you have?

I have the same issue when streaming from my Nexus 7 (2013) on 4.4. Netflix and youtube works fine, but Avia constantly disconnects (kicking me back out to the chromecast home page) and/or buffers every 10 seconds. When I transfer the EXACT same video file to my GS4 running 4.3, it always casts smoothly with no hickups. It is obviously an Avia software glitch. Would love to get it resolved.

Perchance are your Nexus 7 and GS4 on different wireless bands?
Well I'm using a nexus 7 (2012) and now that its mentioned I havent been able to replicate the problem on my gs3.
Hi, I've been trying to chromecast for the last few days. I came from a Nexus 6p which worked 100% with chromecast. If i use the web browser and try to cast from a video channel, it never connects to my chromecast or TV (with chromecast built in). I've tried the mirroring option but it never finds a chromecast. I've downloaded Google Home, that seems to have a bug where i can't login to my google account from my P20 Pro.
I've looked online and on here and haven't seen any other posts on it. It would be good to test. I am on the Dual Sim Three UK 8.1.0.102 (C782) variant.
Thanks
It has worked flawlessly using local cast app.
I've always found Google home glitchy.

Works flawlessly for me. I've had the P20 Pro since release and I've never had a problem using a Chromecast, although I did recently factory reset my Chromecast, so that may have fixed any issues.
I use Chromecast several times a day, and haven't noticed anything odd.
I'm using Chrome browser to play web-videos and the Google Home app to mirror the screen.
Haven't used the built-in cast/mirror feature, but that has never worked reliably for me on any device
Thanks all, i wonder what is happening here. Even the Google home app isn't working. It's like an authentication error in the app. Chromecast doesn't connect to either of my chromecast devices. Works fine on my old phone still. I wonder if it's my firmware. I am on .102 which i know is really old. Waiting for Three/Huawei to update...

Chromecast mostly works for me. The only thing that doesn't is volume controls from screen off. Apart from that, and the few normal Chromecast glitches, it works well.
I'm casting NFL Gamepass from my P20 Pro to my Nvidia Shield as I type this, it's worked flawlessly whenever I've tried since I got my phone (mine is also dual SIM from Three).
This works very sporadically for me, often from apps that cast (excluding Netflix and YouTube which have a different mechanism for Chromecast discovery) it's as if the refresh devices button doesn't really trigger a proper refresh.
The Google home app often doesn't show my Chromecasts but if I keep it open and wait maybe 5 minutes they'll eventually show.
Anyone seen anything like this?
I had problem with NBA game time app, it didn't display the cast icon after update of the device to .107 but iwas probably due to the implementation of an old. Chromecast API from NBA app itself. After NBA has updated the app is working perfectly
I streamed YouTube to a chromecast this evening without any problem, worked like expected...
No issues here, sounds more like a network issue to me.

Have you guys tried it with apps other than youtube or netflix?
Those work fine for me but they use a different discovery method, see here;
actually... I can't post links but googling "netflix different chromecast discovery" and going to the google developers discovery troubleshooting confirms this.
Network is also ruled out for me as it's still working flawlessly on my old phone and my wife's phone.
I cast all the time from Plex so it's super annoying not being able to find the chromecasts for 10 minutes and the closing apps/G Home, rebooting etc trying to trigger a discovery.
Cheers,
Jon
Oh a further update to my theory of "the refresh/scan isn't working as it should"
I have a CC that turns off when the TV is turned off and this sometimes appears in the list of devices for hours after it's been turned off, like overnight.
I've tried a factory reset but it didn't help, it's across multiple apps so maybe something to do with discovery in the android discovery software itself?
I wish all the apps just used their own discovery like YT/NF.... grumble, grumble...
Further update...
I'm 90% sure this is due to some overly aggressive power saving. I've also noticed the BBC news widget doesn't update as much as it should.
Today I tested resetting a Chromecast and attaching it as a new one. Didn't work. Needed to use another device to get it set up with Google home. Not ideal. Be interesting to see if anyone else can attach a new Chromecast after factory resetting one if anyone fancies some troubleshooting for me?
Go on, be a pal.
Cheers,
Jon
Works flawlessly in streaming from playmovies to casting the screen
I stream from plex or YouTube to a chromecast without problem
Damn... Maybe it's just some devices or a firmware issue then.
I'm on 8.1.0.103, have you a later one? Might be stuck waiting for an update

I'm on .107 firmware, I never tried older ones.
Im also experiencing some problems with chromecast. Basically, some apps, like spotify, sometimes does not show my chromecasts under devices available.
After some tests, I think it is something related to the wifi strength and wifi+. If I disable the sim data, magically all the chromecasts around my house are correctly detected.
