Hi all, first off, I just bought a sony xperia z off ebay... second hand... and locked on the 3 network!!.
I am wanting to install a custom ROM and unlock the phone... both network and the boot loader?... I would like to wipe the phone clean and start afresh as it has come with lots of unwanted apps and other rubbish!.
Would anyone be kind enough to suggest a good custom ROM and/or a guide to do this?... I am totally new to Android having used iphones all my life so I haven't the faintest idea on how to do this...
I also don't have a PC. so it will have to be done via MAC... The phone model is a C6603 and its running Android version 4.2.2.
Hoping someone can help and any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Will

If you want to unlock the bootloader you might be out of luck as carrier handsets are usually locked down in terms of the BL, for anything else see the stickys.

No.The Rooting/ROMing is not the same as SIM/Network/Subsidy unlock.
I have had good sucess with codes from GSMLiberty.net.
Process:
1- Buy an "unlock code" (you need the network the phone is locked to as well as the phone IMEI number (look under the battery).
2- Put in NEW SIM
3- At code prompt, type the number that gsmliberty.net gives you (or another site, I am just speaking from experience).
Voila! Unlocked phone. You can then keep the stock ROM or move on to rooting/installing a new ROM if you want.
Wiping the phone and installing new ROMs has no effect on the unlock. You are OK.
hi,

At first hi, welcome to the XDA-community! Second, you are at the wrong place. This is the T-Mobile G1 section, but maybe I can help you. My opinion is taht you just stick to the orginal ROM, because it is a new handset with a good OS. BUT, if you still want to root your phone, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415223 Though rooting requires basic computering knowledge I give you 1 big caution:
Rooting your phone WILL void your warranty
As you have a new phone, you don't want to do that in case you let it fall and the screen is broken or such. This post does have a easy rooting method so it's dumbed up enough for beginners in rooting. Second step is getting a new ROM (OS, still android). The handset if fairly new, so there are not so many ROMs available. Just google around.
I hope this got you started!
Cheers and welcome to our community!
Hi to everybody.
After soft bricking my sim-unlocked X8 due to install attempt of the lates tGingerbread v23 rom with alfadons and overclock-module, I had to use SEUS to flash an OEM rom and baseband.
Now I tried to re-root and unlock the bootloader several times but unfortunately the last string in cmd window is: not recognized simlock... or something similar.
After doing a lot of forum search there are plenty of hints telling that there's nothing to do. no possibility to install custom rom.
I tried it anyway and still soft brick (SE logo appears and nothing else..)..
So I decided to re-flash the OEM Rom and use the phone this way BUT......it works fine only WITHOUT a sim card inserted. If the sim card is inserter no icons appear, no button working. The only thing you see is the background immage...
Can anybody help me??????

Unfotunately that's not possible as yhe phoen is an "3 italia" sim-locked phone bougth in italy obviously and I moved to germany now..... The bill is still at home in Italy....
3 Italy would immediately notice the phone has been sim-unlocked...and I would have to pay the whole listing proce of the period when I bought the phone and would have to pay a high penality too...
That woudl be more than 400 euro in sum.....not worth....
Thanks to everybody who tried to help me

Don't take it to the 3 store. Take it so the Sony Ericsson store and tell them what DevStaffAndroid said. You will need to have warranty though.

1) Download the original stock rom. run flash tool to flash the stock rom.
2) Run S1 tool, press " RESTORE" button!
At the stage, no harm trying!
Hi guys, I'm trying to unlock my S3 Mini and I'm having no luck so far. I've managed to root the phone using the iRoot (former Vroot) program and it worked nicely. At least it seems it did, now it does ask me to give su eprmissions to allpications and busybox is installed.
As for the unlocking itself, I tried several methods. Firstly, there was some service menu, accessible by a long string of numbers on the dialer, then going to network lock menu and setting something there, but the menu isn't there. Or better said, when I come to the Network Lock, it says only Not Active and no further options available. Then I tried the GalaxSim Unlock just to see, but as it said in the notes, this version of phone is not supported and so it didn't work. Same with another app, Galaxy S Unlock, or something like that. That one needs busybox, so I installed the 1.22 I think, but it says that there is a problem with busybox or something. It does say in the notes, that recommended is 1.17 busybox, so I keep that as a backup hope but it seems again, that the phone is not supported...
So basically, I have a rooted S3 Mini, that is still locked to T-mobile. I'm not sure, whether the country of origin matters here, but I think it was purchased in Austria (I am not the first owner) and need to unlock it for slovak O2. So far I am actually very happy with it's stock ROM, so I'm not planning to flash it completely, just sim unlock. So if anyone has any idea, what I can do to avoid going to a phone service and have it done for money, I'd appreciate it.

Have you tried repairing your ZR using Sony PC companion? Have you unlocked bootloadter by official or unofficial method without backing up DRM keys and TA partitions?

I am not able to understand the words like carpetetas or recueperar? you can take your phone to local service center and ask them to see what is wrong. First take backup of your phone like contacts, sms whatsapp data etc. then visit service center. If everything is okay ( DRM Keys and TA partitions ) they will flash latest 4.4.4
If yiu didnvt unlocked the bootloader then try to install arom for ur region but if u unblocked bootloader i think you have lost ta partition so the imei doesn't show up when u call *06#
I think so too. May be you have unlocked bootloader without backing up TA partition and DRM keys thats why you are not able to upgrade your phone to version 4.3 or 4.4.2 or 4.4.4.
There was same question some time back. Someone unlocked bootloader without backing up and now stuck on 4.1.2. Sony refused to help as he lost warranty of the phone by unlocking. He had no knowledge about unlocking and warranty.

Frankly speaking, I do not understand non-English words that frequently appears in your posts. Having that said, I can pretty much grasp the gist from your posts, although that may not be 100% what you intend to mean. Combined with answers by previous forum members, i offer you suggestions to your problems point by point.
Okay enough of this bull****. First I want to say that if you are unfamiliar with things here on XDA, read the guidelines before you do anything. You probably unlocked the bootloader of your phone, but did not backup anything. In that case, you HAVE to install a kernel everytime you try to switch rom (including a stock-based, or stock for that matter). Your numerous problems above suggests a kernel problem to me. What you do now is to follow UB way to flash a AOSP or whatever rom (not stock) and report if it solved your problems

Friend regret that I can not understand what I write, I apologize, also thanks for your help, I'll do what you recommended me, be installing a kernel or room cooked AOSP, I have installed the root in the only version that works on my ZR which is 4.1.2, then be installing the Recovery to test a kernel or room. Could you tell me which room should I install? You can give me the links? Thanks in advance for your help
