The much anticipated Android 4.3 update, released earlier this week, has caused headaches for thousands of Nexus 4 owners as several incompatibility issues emerge.
Signal loss, continuous reboot loops, application bugs and battery life issues are just a few of the myriad of problems reported hours after the update was released.
However, the majority of users on Google’s Product Forum have reported Wi-Fi connectivity issues, which include automatic toggling between enabled and disabled Wi-Fi and the failure of the Wi-Fi icon to appear on the notification window. In more extreme cases, users reported severe overheating and even bricked phones.
The problems have caused dissatisfaction among those affected, some users threatening to switch back to the previous 4.2 firmware.
This is not the first claim of phones overheating this week, as a man’s apartment was set alight after his Galaxy S4 caught on fire, but that was likely caused by fake parts or battery.
It was hoped that the new software would increase productivity by allowing a more efficient multi-user ability, better App control, and higher graphic capabilities in the desired device, through the compatibility of Open GL ES 3.0.
Android engineer Dan Morrill says Google is aware of the issue and is working on a fix, but there was no advice given to rectify the current situation.

Can't say mine is "bursting into flames" or "bricked"....anyone else?
Also if google is "working on a fix", does that mean we'll get a third build which will unite everything in the other two?

LoL.. Google(aka NSA) suck.

Nope no issues with mine at all.. Been perfect!

NOPE been great running Paraandroid 4.3

Yeah, this phone is bursting other phones, especially iPhones into flames

I read a similar article saying that 4.3 has "bricked many Nexus 4's and made countless others utterly unusable."
I don't know where these tech blogs are getting their information but as soon as I saw the article I immediately thought I hadn't heard of a single case of people complaining about 4.3 causing issues with their phones.

they write about hearsay, and complaints from newbies flashing their phones, not really knowing about the right processes and procedures. they just need to write a story, it doesnt have to be researched for accuracy, they write these things to grab attention.

Its blowing the iphonie minds!

Mine bootlooped and wouldn't go past the Google splash. But I think I just downloaded a bad .zip. That's the last time I cut corners and don't bother checking the MD5, in trying to save a few seconds I lost a good 30 minutes and had to factory reset.
Moral of the story: Always check the MD5

My nexus is running fine on 4.3, no issues at all. It's uncommon to see a nexus 4 completely bricked because it just doesn't happen unless you do something like flash a rom that was meant for another phone, unlike androids like my old galaxy s2 that are prone to the infamous 'brick bug'

I knew 4.3 couldn't be trusted.

There are some "forced close" errors with google & 3rd party appz. WiFi (excluding delayed notifications issue) & bt issues are quite gone & battery performance didn't improve much.
That's pretty much sum my experience with 4.3 so far.

The majority of those complaints are the same type who show up here, label themselves a n00b and want you to hold their hand for them. You show them step by step instructions how to do it the right way and they say "lolz dats hard, I f0undz a to00lkit thx anyway bro"...

[Q] Why does android's standby time suck?

I've used around 5 Android phones (starting from 2.1 now up to 4.3) and for some reason, they all have a pathetic standby time. When I say standby, I mean when you press the power button and it turns the screen off and you don't touch it. Why is android the only OS that has this problem? WP, fine. IOS, probably the best one (only good thing about it).
I've tried different kernels, using no apps from the play store at all, turning off Google's location service, using greenify, and a bunch more. My battery still drops to ~70% at 4:00 starting at 100 at 7:00. When I briefly had an iphone and windows phone, I always was amazed at how my battery was around ~90-95% at 4:00. I know most people actually USE their phone during the day, so its probably not as noticeable.
Does anyone know the real reason for this? By real, I mean the deep down reason for this. Is java just a hog?
I think the main reason is the backround apps that are running. I used my old sensation just as a phone and so I deleted all the apps from it (Facebook, Viber etc.) and the phone lasted 5-6 days on standby with a 1 year old batery. Before I removed those apps I couldnt get 2 days on standby. I think backgrounfd apps in Android are allowed more "freedom" so they use up the CPU while on standby. That is my experience and opinion.

Yeah I thought that, but I said I tried it with no apps installed. Same thing.
Weird, I don't experience that kind of massive stand by drain.
If I turn my screen off or let it time out, my phone can sit for a almost a couple of days before it shuts down - sometimes two full days. This was true with my Nexus 4 and Galaxy S3, and now the One.
So I have no clue what you're talking about, generalizing Android like that.
i disagree
My battery drains 1% every six hours

I'm generalizing Android because I was talking about "Stock" android. Not what we do here. I really have to find a fix for this. I dont know what I'm doing wrong here.
Mine also has great standby time...

I am talking about stock Android as well. I have had great battery life with my last three phones.
I've had no such problems with "android" in general. Some roms / apps yes. But after fixing those issues it was pretty much what would have been expected / what reviewers/other people get.
I would recommend getting something like gsam battery monitor and let it run at least a day and then post some screenshots. Maybe we can give some concrete advice then.

I'm very very happy to say that my very own HTC One is arriving today!!! I cannot wait to get my hands on it. I'm climbing the walls literally, much better size than the 5 invh dvtrrn. It's a 'prettier' design by far.
Any suggestions on what I should do firsrt? Perhapss some updates or upgrades?
All and any help is deeply appreciated
I would just spent time getting to know it before you start pulling it about, honestly this is the best out of the box mobile ive ever had, mine is still stock after nearly a year . The screen is awsome, terrific sound from the speakers, even blink feed is, in my opinion, a great fearure. The camera is ok probably the weakest feature on the phone but play arounds with it, but the Zoe feature is really awsome especially in combo with the video highlights. Get some NFC tags and play about with the NFC to.
Enjoy you One

Congrats, good choice! (Even you could have waited 8 more weeks for the new HTC One 2014).
Advices:
- unpack it and put it to charge (should be always started first time with full battery)
- start, follow instructions (you'll get there possibilities to import your old phones contacts, calendar, sms,...)
- Phone will come with Android 4.22 and sense 5.0, you'll get Upgrade notification (based on your location 4.3 or even already 4.42 each with Sense 5.5), do the upgrade! (Better performance, battery time, no more blinkfeed as homescreen)
- Make some pictures. Pictures have a violet/pink touch? Then you were lucky to pick up a unit with defective camera. Wrap up the device back and ask for another working one (probability is very low; but when the ONE was released almost every third or fourth customer had this problem)
- If your device is fine, just use it, explore the possibilities...
I get notifications on this thread, if you have questions just post them here and I'll try to answer them. Don't root too fast (HTC is in this point al little *****) and look if you can use the ONE without root and custom rom (I can, have my device since half a year and still completely stock; even launcher... Wasn't the point with any of my Samsung devices...)
Don't worry if your phone won't pass a whole day on one battery charge, it must first calibrate. The fourth charge or so you'll experience a much better battery performance
Sincerly

Before you do anything to the device, please read and make sure you understand what you are doing:angel:. If you gonna mod your phone then make a full nandroid backup before and make a copy to your computer:angel:. Also you should consider S-OFF you device if you are going to flash stuff, pretty much easier to back to stock with S-OFF if you screw something.:good:

BTW not true for newer devices like htc one. You can enjoy your device right out of the box, no need to wait until its fully charged.

This issue is caused by heating of the device so he will probably not be able to detect it ''out of the box'' imo.
strait out the box unlock it,, twrp it,,nandroid bk..up s.off ..supercid,,,,and then flash the hell out off it enjoy

[Q] Jelly like scrolling?

The Verge just published a review on the Droid Turbo and it says the phone has some kind jelly like scrolling. What do you guys think about it? Is it for real?
I can't post links here, so just search for "Motorola Droid Turbo review" on The Verge's website. They included a gif where you can see what I'm talking about.
I never noticed that on my Turbo.
Sent from my XT1095
I notice it, but it's a subtle effect. If you scroll lightly on a long list of things in the web browser, you might be able to see it.
Yea I have no doubt seen that in the store. Really bothered me.
Mine doesn't do anything like that. Wonder if it's because I switched to ART or if it's only on some devices.
Mine doesn't do that, I even tried it on their site like was in their video and smooth as silk.
Yes, mine does the same thing, though it's not nearly as bad as their example. I'm hoping I'll just get used to it.
Yeah, I returned my Turbo because of the issue. If it gets sorted out with updates I may take the plunge again, but until that time I'm out. There is another thread in the general section talking about the same issue. It's referred to as screen warping in that one.

Yep, that's how mine and all of the display models were. It was more obvious when scrolling though the xda app. Just try holding your finger on the screen, pull it down, and then go back up with it without picking up your finger. Maybe it only effected the first models but I haven't saw one that doesn't have the issue yet. :/ I would have kept it if it weren't for that issue.

I have a feeling it's a display driver issue, as some other 2560x1440 devices have had varying degrees of severity with this issue. Mine appears flawless in all apps and websites on Chrome, so you might have more luck in the future with a more recent shipment of units.
I have two turbos with a Sept 24th build date, 64gb nylon, both do not have the jelly scroll issue. Tried numerous apps, but I could replicate what I see in that GIF.

I hope you're right. I'm buying off contract so I would have to verify that the issue was fixed in person for me to take the plunge again. Like I said though, all of models that I have seen has it. It's been quite a few too.
I had this issue with my DROID that I bought about a week ago. Returned it since, it still had alot of kinks to work out.
My Turbo 32GB has an Oct 7 build date and I can't replicate that flaw on mine either.
I've noticed this at certain times on my Turbo. Honestly it's subtle to the point that I thought I was imagining it. At least for me personally it doesn't bother me at all. When I first saw it I actually wondered if it was intentional and thought it was kinda cool lol.
Can not replicate the gif. Tried and tried. Used chrome. Is that the browser everyone is using? I assume so since that's what the phone is shipped with. But you never know. I can see how that would be irritating
Just so we're all clear, what that gif is supposed to illustrate is the fact that when you scroll up and down things seem to expand and contract as you do so. Not the delay that appears to be in the gif, that is just part of the effect of the slow mo, all phones have that.
Every droid turbo I have seen has this effect. At this point I've seen it on about 15 phones. I've never seen a droid turbo that does not have it. It is most apparent on sites where there is a lot of color in blocks because it's easier for the eye to see the blocks expanding and contracting than with text
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
Anyone know of a good website or app to test for this scrolling effect?
Sent from my XT1254
I see it on my turbo, disabling animations in developer options doesn't do anything. I am not sure its even an animation effect, it may just be some lag in the scaler. Its not specific to a particular app, its throughout android. Hopefully they address it in the next update.

As mentioned before this had been there since release LAST year. I don't see how this not being included would have changed your perception of what crap is. I'd ask but you would probably only list 1 or 2 things with any other listing still being a problem in KK.

I had several problems with LP not present in KK:
- bluetooth not working properly with car
- when the call screen is minimized, sometimes LP won´t end the call after pressing END
- loss of signal quality (much worse radio, might be related to the bluetooth problem)
- audio notifications at night used to be disabled in KK. Now, with LP, I have do turn wi-fi & 4G off at night so the phone won´t disturb me with notifications
- after 2-3 calls, I have to reboot the phone, because the call after that will be completely silent
Again, none of these problems existed before.
I didn't know this so thank you OP. I think the new feature that concerns me most is the addition of Interruptions to the notifications/sound profile. I like my alarm going off even know I put the phone on silent. :/

Qualcomm Security bugs.

Serious security flaws that could give attackers complete access to a phone's data have been found in software used on tens of millions of Android devices.
The bugs were uncovered by Checkpoint researchers looking at software running on chipsets made by US firm Qualcomm.
Qualcomm processors are found in about 900 million Android phones, the company said.
However, there is no evidence of the vulnerabilities currently being used in attacks by cyberthieves.
"I'm pretty sure you will see these vulnerabilities being used in the next three to four months," said Michael Shaulov, head of mobility product management at Checkpoint.
"It's always a race as to who finds the bug first, whether it's the good guys or the bad."
Affected devices included:
BlackBerry Priv and Dtek50
Blackphone 1 and Blackphone 2
Google Nexus 5X, Nexus 6 and Nexus 6P
HTC One, HTC M9 and HTC 10
LG G4, LG G5, and LG V10
New Moto X by Motorola
OnePlus One, OnePlus 2 and OnePlus 3
US versions of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung S7 Edge
Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Mr Shaulov said six months of work to reverse engineer Qualcomm's code revealed the problems.
The flaws were found in software that handles graphics and in code that controls communication between different processes running inside a phone.
Exploiting the bugs would allow an attacker to gradually be able to take more control over a device and gain access to its data.
Android sculptureImage copyrightAP
The flaws could be used to make booby-trapped apps that steadily gain access to a phone's data
Checkpoint handed information about the bugs and proof of concept code to Qualcomm earlier this year.
In response, Qualcomm is believed to have created patches for the bugs and started to use the fixed versions in its factories.
It has also distributed the patches to phone makers and operators. However, it is not clear how many of those companies have issued updates to customers' phones.
Checkpoint has created a free app called QuadRooter Scanner that can be used to check if a phone is vulnerable to any of the bugs, by looking to see if the patches for them have been downloaded and installed.
In addition, Mr Shaulov said Android owners should only download apps from the official Google Play store to avoid falling victim to malicious programs.
"People should call whoever sold them their phone, their operator or the manufacturer, and beg them for the patches," said Mr Shaulov.
Qualcomm has yet to respond to a request for comment.
Scary stuff - too bad Google can't just roll us out a patch for it

No worries, mate, Google has seen the issue and will release a security patch for it (2015-08-05), check here!
We can only hope OnePlus releases the security patch as soon as possible, or you can just hop on the custom ROM bandwagon since they often have the patch merged day one.
