Hello everyone,
I have an annoying issue with the proximity sensor of my Galaxy Note. I have searched around but I can not find any answer to this common problem.
Regardless of the rom I am using, including the stock rom, the sensor fails to work - so the screen is not turning off during calls even though this setting is enabled.
Also, I have tested the proximity sensor using the tools on android app market as well as testing with the inbuilt one - always reads 0.
Any idea how to proceed? I am sure this would help a lot of people...
Have you tested it using the *#0*# and test the proximity there. May be a hardware failure

I did test it there. I get the same problem - just reports 0.
Does that basically mean the sensor is dead?
May be

I have auto brightness off, auto adjust screen tone off and brightness set to max. My screen randomly dims and then gets bright again...anyone know what's causing this?

Hmm is it this adapt display option maybe?

Same here then I went into my settings to check the brightness (settings, display, brightness) and it said brightness decreased to prevent over heating or something like that ..check it next time you notice it dimming and see if it's the same thing ..pretty annoying

power saver uses the dimming option for low consumption of battery and make sure auto adjust is off in display settings

I'm willing to bet adapt display

Power saving isn't on. Adapt display didn't fix it either

I have everything turned off also ..I checked in my settings every time my screen dimmed and every time the same message ..it was driving me nuts for days (still is)

I've had this happened to me also.
It seems to be more frequent when I'm using Chrome ( not stock browser ). It suddenly gets dim and then may or may not eventually brighten up again, it's pretty random
Also happens when I'm on the launcher but not as frequent
- Automatic Brightness / Off
- Screen Mode / Professional Photo
- Power saving mode / Off
- Auto adjust screen tone / Off
Is there something else I may be missing?
It happens to me while using the xda app. Annoying as hell. It has the same message as Melissa

Does anyone know if this processor does thermal throttling? That could possibly trigger a power save dim with overheating. If we get root this can be disabled using trickster mod.

The Otimus G Pro had a setting in the hidden menu to disable thermal throttling.

Will do, you as well plz :good:
Thought this was an issue with my phone when I got it from AT&T yesterday. Glad to know it isn't just me. It seems to only have the issue when I am in a low-lite area (at least on mine) but when I am in an area with good lighting and the back light is 75% or more it doesn't dim nearly as much. Would be interested to see what a fix would be for this.

The service mode is brought up by typing *#0011# in the dialer on this phone but aside from that i havent had a chance to mess around in there. I do know that key imput 1 doesnt bring up the main menu anymore.

So I've been having this issue and noticed it like two days ago, and reading all your responses I looked through and noticed I had one of the features that I thought I turned off. Smart Stay says that it starts to turn the screen off when we look away maybe it's a buggy feature (one I never intended to use but it might be the one doing this dimming thing (being one of the first steps to turn off the screen)
Hi all,
I have an issue with my xperia z : lets say a whatsapp voice message is being played if something goes near the proximity sensor the sound stops and the screen dim ??!!???
Is there a Solution for this ??
Thanks for your help
Its not a problem. Your phone detect obstruction near proximity sensor and registered it as your ears. So it change the sound from speaker to earpeace.
If im not mistaken.

is not it supposed to continue back on the speaker once the obstructing object has moved away ?

Curious how come when I get a notification for lets say... Google Hangouts, my screen doesn't light up ? Is there any way to change this.. or nothing can be done? Thank you.
Certain apps have the option to allow it. Personally it is horrible to have that. Say you get a notification in your pocket, there will be a ton of screen presses that happen when your screen turns on. It is also a waste of battery.

Most the times the notification light would come on. Top left corner

I'm trying to decide wether to wake Google now with the mic "saying ok google" the proximity sensor "waving in front of the screen" or the gyroscope/accelerometer "shaking the phone"
I want to know if anyone can tell me which sensor consumes less power both screen on and off.

Shaking the phone seems like the worst idea, thing would go on and off in your pocket all the time. My best guess would be the microphone as the most efficient.
