[Q] Downgrading from 4.3 to 4.1.2 ... need help - Nexus 7 General

Long story short! i am not happy with the performance of my nexus 7 32gb wifi from 4.2 - 4.3 my battery life is crap (cant even get over 3h onscreen time)
i want to downgrade my tablet to 4.1.2 stock rooted because Ive been hearing good things about that version
i am on bootloader 4.18, can i just wipe data (without wiping sd card) and flash the 4.1.2 zip
or do i have to clean the whole tablet and flash a lower version bootloader?
Thanks in advance!

Afaik you will need to wipe everything and flash the lower bootloader and then the 4.1.2 firmware/Rom ect. Following any guide for returning to stock or downgrading should suffice for your needs

Have you tried doing a clean flash of 4.3 using fastboot? It wipes the tablet clean, but I found the performance improvement going from 4.2 very noticeable. I normally get around 8-9 sot with it. It's the 32 gb wifi model bought on release date.

That's not normal, unless those 3 hours are playing games.
Backup and restore the entire system using Nexus images. There are posts archiving older ones, so finding 4.1.x should be easy. You'll also have to look into how to block OTA requests, etc.
That said, I agree with the bottom poster. Wipe clean and see what happens. Something is wrong with your current configuration.

I agree with the points above, I wouldn't downgrade. It can cause huge issues if done wrong, then you'll have to sort out the annoying "Update" notifications by disabling them. Its all alot of work for not much of a reward.
I'd do a full backup.
Complete wipe of everything
Re-install Factory Image
Restore what you need from backup.

Ok guys ive fully cleaned my tablet (wiped sd +system), updated the bootloader and installed stock rooted 4.3 with stock kernel
the performance issues have been resolved but the battery is still the same, can't get over 2.5h on screen time with little use
i am hoping its a rogue app that is causing the battery drain and i need your help

Hi, qaz22453...
This does sound more than a little odd.
2.5 hours screen time is way below what you should be expecting... and a rogue app sounds like a likely candidate.
Have you tried analysing your battery usage with either BetterBatteryStats or GSam Battery Monitor.
BetterBatteryStats is the better of the two... as it gives more detailed information on app 'wakelocks' that might be draining your battery.
For myself, on Factory Stock JellyBean 4.3, I get around 6.5 hours screen time, over a couple of days. I could possibly get 7 hours, but I'm not comfortable about letting the battery drop below 15%.
The following tips might also help...
Trying disabling any 'syncing' activity you won't need in SETTINGS>>GOOGLE>>ACCOUNTS. Stuff like App Data, Calender, Chrome, Contacts, Gmail, Google Currents, Google Photos, Google Play Books, Google Play Magazines, Google Play Movies, Google Play Music, Keep, People Details, Sound Search for Google Play. That's a lot of stuff, that by default Android automatically 'syncs'... and it's gotta have an impact on battery performance. So... IF YOU DON'T NEED IT, DISABLE IT.
In SETTINGS>>WIRELESS & NETWORKS>>Wi-Fi>>menu>>ADVANCED... set Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to 'Never'.
In SETTINGS>>WIRELESS & NETWORKS>>More... Disable NFC (unless you plan on using Near Field Communications anytime soon).
In SETTINGS>>LOCATION ACCESS... Disable GPS satellites. Location by GPS only works if you're outdoors and you have effective'line-of-sight' to the GPS satellites. In other words, the sky. Wi-Fi & mobile network location is accurate enough for most purposes
If you backup your tablet regularly to your PC (or know how to), you can also disable 'Backup My Data' in SETTINGS>>BACKUP & RESET.
And finally, if Bluetooth is enabled in SETTINGS>>WIRELESS & NETWORKS... and you don't need it... disable it.
---------------------------------
All these, collectively (enabled as they are by default) will have a detrimental effect on battery performance.
Enable what you need... and no more.
---------------------------------
To conclude...
Using either of two apps I referenced above... run the tablet through a complete charge and discharge cycle (without reboot)... and they should reveal which app is draining the battery the most.
You might also want to consider disabling the Auto-Brightness feature in SETTINGS>>DISPLAY>>BRIGHTNESS... and manually set your own brightness level. Personally, I often find the screen too bright anyway, and prefer to set it to very low (around 15-20%).
Good luck.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Thank you so much for your help
I did try betterbatterystats.. But not thought a full charge and discharge cycle
I will let my battery fully discharge, then charge while off , then I'll use betterbatterystats to determine the battery hog
Once again, thanks for your help

No problem, qaz2453...
But just a word of caution... I wouldn't let the battery COMPLETELY discharge (ie., hit 0%).
It's generally not considered a good idea to FULLY discharge Lith-Ion batteries as it impairs their performance and reduces their lifetime expectancy.
cf. this article... http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-tips-for-extending-lithium-ion-battery-life
And on the Nexus 7, there have been reported soft-brick problems when the battery gets really low (<5%)... although it's nothing that can't be fixed.
Personally, I 'plug-in' at no lower than 10%... although I have gone as low 4% (usually when I've completely forgotten the thing is running low on juice).
Get a battery widget, like this one from PlayStore (been using this one for three years now, on a variety of Android boxes, including the Nexus 7; tried others... but I always come back to it. It consumes next to no resources!).
And keep a periodic eye on BetterBatteryStats... to see which 'wakelocks' or CPU processes might be the culprit behind your unusually short screen-time.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Random applications

Can someone explain to me why I always have different applications that I didn't specifically start listed in my task killer? I am trying to get a handle on the battery life of my CM7 14 NC. I am pretty new to android and have a hunch that it is something simple that I am missing. TIA.
No one else sees applications running on their NC that weren't implicitly started? Sometimes I look and twitter / facebook will be running even though I didn't start them.
That's pretty much how android works, and it's also the reason why you shouldn't be using a task killer...

http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
As has already been implied, don't use task killers. Apps start up and shut down on their own and Android has a built in 'task killer'. I found that when I was using a task killer, my phone ran at maybe 10% faster (due to less running on the ram), but the battery life actually was worse by a good margin. IMO, the Nook runs really well (especially if you OC it) and the battery life can better be controlled in other ways. Turning it off when not in use, unlike a phone (because you need it on to make a call, of course), will save a lot of battery. Also, SetCPU can be used to set profiles, they will save you on battery a lot. Disable auto-update and notifications for apps unless you really need them. use the power control and set it to where you can turn the brightness down low on the fly and keep it down unless you need it up. Sure, the screen looks beautiful when bright, but unless you're playing a game or watching a video, you don't need a bright screen.
Sorry for the rant, hope maybe it helps a little. Also, the more updates we have the better battery life will be.
Thanks for the heads up on this. I had not read that article before. I will uninstall the task killer and see what happens to my battery life. The other suggestions about turning off auto updates makes sense also.

cm7 already has profiles built into it under the cyanogenmod settings in the settings app! if you run both you are running the same thing twice and wasting both performance and power.

[Q] One of these apps is killing my battery, which one?

I got a new Captivate a couple weeks ago now. Since then my battery life has been less than 12 hours on stock 2.1, stock 2.2, Paragon RC6 and Serendipity 5.12.
Yesterday I decided to wipe the phone and start off with stock apps then slowly add them back in each day. So far, I'm 5 hours unplugged and still have 86% battery (stock apps) after using some GPS, some WiFi, 3 phone calls for a total of about 20 minutes, some browsing and some text messaging. THIS IS HOW THE PHONE SHOULD BE WORKING. Therefore, one of the apps I normally have installed is being an asshole. However, this is going to take me forever to slowly add each one back in and monitor them to see what is killing my battery.
Does anyone have an idea of what it might be from the following (I didn't list what comes on the default Serendipity ROM because it obviously isn't anything already on it):
3G Watchdog
Adobe Reader
Advanced Task Killer
Angry Birds
AppBrain Market
Barcode Scanner

*=Suspicious. Any of these could be the culprit(s) since they access the internet/network, but ones like Twitter and Facebook that update regularly are most suspect.
Do you keep skype connected? I would imagine it would use a lot of power if left connected.
What is your refresh interval set for in facebook?
Have you made sure to flash or reset with a full battery? The first time i did a factory reset, i did it with a half battery and my captivate would only last about 6h with light usage. After resetting with a full battery I could go 14-16 hours with similar usage.
Another issue ive seen is if you are in a low signal area that can also cause higher battery drain.
I'd suggest installing osmonitor from market and see what apps are running and eating up resources.
I previously had appbrain issues where it was running constantly at 5-10% of the cpu's resources but just uninstalled and reinstalled and all seems ok now. ymmv...

ones in red definatly, blue meh... with the built in memory management/ tweaked management in updated newer/custom roms, task killers use more power than they save.
Android has their own online market with push installs now. AppBrain not needed. https://market.android.com/

The blue ones could also be battery vampires because they access the network/wifi. Depends on how often they are set to sync data.
Thanks for the suggestions, I think what I'll do first is install everything that isn't suspicious from what you guys advised against and monitor that. Then I'll slowly add back the suspicious apps.
By the way, I'm going on 12 hours now and only at 74%. Usually my phone would be dead by now. This is with moderate use too. I just got off an hour long phone call with my brother after we both put our phones in speaker phone mode and owned kids on Black Ops.
don't forget beautiful widgets. stock setting were to update weather every 15 min. that is a lot of data over the course of a full day.

weather apps are battery killers. I uninstalled mine and went from 10hours to two days between charges.
@morrty, be sure to let us know your results.
I definitely will, it just may be a little while because I'm calibrating the battery by doing a full run down and full charge. I'm actually having a hard time running down the battery now.
Currently sitting at 45% @ 29 hours.
Incredible, I can't wait to single out that asshole app.
So far, I've installed all of the non suspicious apps. My battery started draining a little bit faster but not to the point it was before. It still seems like normal use. 7% drain overnight. 4% more since waking up, showering and coming to work.
Latitude was a huge offender I found. Even with the auto check-in disabled, it kept the phone in a partial wake-lock.
I've still got more testing to do but I'll update when I find out more.
Looks like it was a mix of facebook, twitter, latitude and dropbox.
Thanks for the help guys.

battery died overnight

I charged my phone last night to 100% and unplugged it.
When I woke up now it was off. So I turned it on. It went to the LG screen, then Rogers, then went black. Tried it again, same thing.
So I plugged it into the wall and the silver battery icon came up flashing. 5 minutes later now it has 1 red bar.
Why would it die over night? Nothing was running.
It might be because of a widget, not stock.
Yeah.....u definitely had something running in the background.
Make a list of all apps you have installed.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S II w/ CM9
Same happened to me about 4 times.
Its usually a sync process that drains the phone. I guess Exchange server sync.
well I recently installed Go Launcher. I always go application manager and stop all when I am not using the phone though.
Other than this the battery has been better on gingerbread.
ok there are a few apps that keep starting up even though I stop all applications.
- messaging
- rom manager
- youtube
- winamp
- google +
how can I stop them from constantly opening?
youtube and winamp are both widgets on my screens. but on stock froyo if I "stop all" they wouldn't suck up power or anything.
I never use google + so I don't know why it's there.
rom manager don't use anymore since I am not rooted.
If you dont hav titanium backup pro then get it its so worth the couple bucks u can freeze apps so they cant run or u can totally for the other apps u use not much u can do about them running in the background. What kills my batt the most is auto sync and auto baackground data i always turn them off when im not using them

titanium backup requires root. I just upgraded to gingerbread 2.3 so I don't want to play with root right now.
I need help though because only since I upgraded these apps keep coming up.
I am KILLING apps with application manager. These pop up like minutes later.
- email
- google plus
- winamp
- gmail
- messaging
why are these popping up constantly? I never had this with froyo 2.2.2

I know I read task killlers are not worth it.
But as I said, this did NOT happen with Froyo 2.2.2.
I don't even use google +, why would it ever open?
I didn't open my email, SYNC IS OFF. Yet it's there.
Messaging is open, not texting anyone. In froyo I always killed messaging when I was done. It never came back.
ROM manager has no reason to be open since I am not rooted.
apps like Rogers navigation - NEVER use just randomly pop up in the application manager.
Someone must have an answer for this.
My phone is NOT rooted. Stock gingerbread 2.3.
Hey umirin,
I too had noticed that the phone would constantly restart random apps that weren't being used, despite seemingly nothing happening. It pissed me off to no end, but the reason why it happens is because the programmers write in queues for the programs to start, such as 'screen on,' 'screen off,' and my personal favorites, 'wifi state change' and 'connectivity change.' There's an app called autostarts on the market (it costs about a dollar i think) that will let you disable all of these, so now I have no random apps starting and my battery life is much better There are free ones on the market you can try as well just to see, but they didn't give me nearly the access to all the queues that autostarts does. It's a damn good app. Also, if you want to freeze apps and you don't want to fork out for the paid version of Titanium Backup, AntTek App Manager can freeze all the apps you want for free good luck improving your battery life, I just bought a 3500 mAh battery on amazon to improve mine lol and now the phone is a beast.
the phone is just storing them in ram its not using cpu cycles or battery wile in ram its so if you do use the apps it loads faster
True, while it is in the ram it does not use CPU cycles. But when it loads them, it does. I've also noticed the phone slow down noticeably and even crash when there's tons of apps left in the memory. For some reason it just doesn't handle cleaning up the unused ones very well. But there are some apps that simply don't need to be loaded every time common events occur on the phone, such as changing connectivity from wifi to the cellular network. Consider this. You leave those (useless) background programs to load when the phone changes connectivity. Then you start your browser, which uses a considerable amount of ram. To make room for the browser, the operating system SHUTS THESE BACKGROUND PROGRAMS DOWN. Stay with me here. Later on, when your phone inevitably changes connectivity again, guess what those little background programs do? They start up again. And that consumes CPU cycles and battery. And they're used for nothing, which means all they amounted to is wasted CPU cycles and battery. In my opinion, it is sloppy programming by the app developers to require their apps to start every time an event like that happens. It consumes resources that are precious on a mobile system such as a cell phone. But it is very useful to leave commonly used apps such as your messaging service or browser in the memory. In fact, the messaging app was the only app I left to start on most of the events on the phone for that exact reason. It's just things like ROM manager and Titanium Backup starting themselves up just to hang out that is a waste.
Your right that's how it works but can't do any thing about it ecsept what was posted above
so strange i left my phone on all night just to see and i only lost 2 percent??
ok why does this do it in gingerbread 2.3 but it didn't do it in froyo 2.2.2?

I got the LG Updater tool from the LG website. As far as I know the update was for Rogers Customers. Updated from Froyo -> Gingerbread. But there are problems with the GB Baseband with ghost calls. The update here was released Feb 1, 2012. I'm just hoping they don;t say "We gave you the Gingerbread update so no Icecream Sandwich until 2013"
yeah figures att and lg couldn't do us all a favor

How to make your Atrix HD(or Any Android Phone) more efficient!!!

Hi,
I have recently upgraded from my 3yr old beloved HD2, the most amazing device ever to play with to Motorola Atrix HD which is THE ONLY Motorola device that is compatible with Tmobile 3G and of course 4G since it support 1700 bandwidth along with 1800 and 2100. Anyways...as I was playing with this phone like rooting, installing apps and removing ATT bloatware....I wanted to share some of the things with you all. I hope you find it useful......
-If you want your phone to be rooted....My first advice is not to upgrade this phone to Jelly Bean as it is harder to root it with JB than it is with ICS. I have used every single Android version in my good old HD2 and I can tell you this there is not any striking difference between these to versions as I have used both and using ICS was better to play with for me...what really made me mad was that my purchased Copilot live 8 app does not recognize my purchased Svox US Grace tts anymore...it did in ICS ...Again, I am not a developer, and developers may argue otherwise
-If you willfully or accidentally upgraded to JB please follow this thread(courtesy of DAN ) for rooting instructions...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2143437
It make may not be a very simple for some of you but be patient, read all the posts and keep trying and you will succeed. This is the only option to root Atrix HD with JB and unfortunately there is no way you can rollback to ICS to get the easy root. For instructions on rooting Atrix HD ICS see here(Also THANKS to DAN )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1940594
Without rooting you can't really do much to make your device more efficient....since all utility apps require root access!!!
Now, if you are rooted......AND you have stock ICS or JellyBean....follow my tips if you will, you will see more efficiency in terms app fluidity and power saving....
-Install System App Remover or Titanium Backup Pro to uninstall all the bloatware that are useless and just sitting on your device and memory for no apparent reason....here is hint: if you have not used an app in last 4-6 weeks, chances are you will never use it/them. You will better success with Titanium backup pro in removing them than System app remover....but be very careful what you delete if are not sure just leave it alone!!! HINT: freeze app first see the effect, be sure then uninstall
-Install Startup manager or any app that does this, to block unnecessary process or app to load up...again if you are not sure leave it alone!!!
-Install any task manager/killer and set it auto kill every 30/15mins or when device is off...closes running apps, frees memory and saves battery.
-Optional: install Rom manager or Rom tool box and fix permission if you have a lots of apps installed in your device. As the claim, this should make the apps run smoother.....No offense to the developers, I personally have not seen and practical effect of this step(it may be just in theory), not in my HD2 and not in Atrix HD...but I like to be on the safe side..it does not hurt!!!
-If you are not a heavy gamer then, install SetCpu or Antutu or something of your choice to scale down the CPU a bit...you don't really need that much speed for normal stuff and you will save a lot of battery this way.
-More battery will be saved if you configure built-in app called SmartActions to a profile that suits you. You can also install auto on/off 2G/3G/4G. I personally don't use it...as it takes long time to switch back to 3G/4G when you wake up your device and you need to use internet right away...not after 10mins..lolll
-If you are in ICS install Widgetlocker app and set it up to Easywake mode to wake your device by pressing volume key....it will save the torture on your power button any time you want to wake up device...NOTE: This App option does not work on JB....so your only substitute is to install WakeUp Screen app to wake up device by shaking instead....TIP: set up threshold to as low as possible so that you don't destroy the inner structure of your Atrix or let it slip out of your hand or smash it on the ground by shaking it too hard....you should not sacrifice your phone over the power button, right???
-Install Lux auto brightness app and adjust/lower your brightness to your choice...I personally think it is too bright in stock mode...saves battery.
WELL........I guess that's all the utility apps you need as far as I can think of and your device will be more efficient......all of these can be installed from the infamous google play....
If you use custom rom via safestrap method...many/some of these features are/may be built in or customizable within the rom...you won't need third party apps...I myself have not installed custom rom although I am flashaholic and I still have my HD2 for that...but I like to wait the custom roms to mature a bit more since I see complaints of buggy camera or sound or bluetooth etc......And since I have customized and cleaned up the stock rom via above stated apps....I don't think I will ever try or need to flash my Atrix HD since it run perfectly up to my expectation....for flashing rom matter I have my HD2 lolllll
NOTE FOR THOSE WHO WILL SCREW UP REGARDLESS: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE AND IF YOU ARE NOT SURE. DON'T DO IT...SIMPLE!
PS: If you have any tips or tricks please join in and share!!!!
I hope you find this helpful...if you do, hit the thanks button...and if you don't...I wish there was a unthank button...xda should work on that
What do you think?
Our CPU is of 1.5 ghz, how much shud we set it at?
I set it up up at 1024...fast enough for me...see for itself you can always change it also make sure to check set at reboot option...I use antutu CPU control. You can also also use diff profile option like...at screen screen set it up around 600 or so...will save even more juice...

Alright. I have an HTC One running Paranoid Android 4.4.2 Beta 2 (just switched from CM 11 to test it out), and my phone has, 3 times now since I got it completely set up, gotten VERY hot (hotter than it does when I play Galaxy on Fire 2) and dropped about 10% battery in less than a minute.
I have XPosed installed and I use Greenify to make sure nothing can keep my device wakelocked. I can make a list of applications I have installed if that will help. I keep location services off, GPS off,use the standard Google keyboard and default Paranoid Android launcher.
A list of what I have installed:
9GAG First
Audiko ringtones
Adobe Reader
ActivityForceNewTask
Countdown widget
Dota2TV
Facebook
FX file Manager
FX Text Editor
Galaxy On Fire 2 HD (will run hot when playing, but I have it set to always shut off in background)
GravityBox [KK]
Humble Bundle Beta
My Banking App (unnamed because I'm paranoid)
Planning Center Services
Shazam
Soundcloud
Spotify
Steam
Terminal Emulator
Twitch
Xposed Installer

Sounds like some processes are going crazy under the cover! You might want to re-flash your rom, if you still have the issue. Also, teamseven kernels for htc one m7 let you control the maximum temperature your phone generates Good luck

I'll look in to kernels. I don't know a lot about them. Lol.

Great things, download and flash just like a rom. You can find them under kernels while on the HTC One M7 profile here on xda lets you do a lot of things such as overclocking, undervolting, different wake and sleep options, Logo2Menu etc. Just make sure you wipe properly prior to flashing! I personally get better battery life with TeamSeven, but try them out for yourself. It depends on the ROM, the aren't all compatible you know Remember that the kernel needs a few charging cycles before your phone gets used to it, so expect it to work fully after a few days
Good luck mate, hope it helped!

I appreciate it man. Did a little researching on what kernels even are first. If I get spare time at work, I'll look into custom ones today.
