[Q] Help rooting Galaxy S I9000 - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am wanting to root my galaxy S but I can't seem to find any for my baseband and firmware.
I am using Gingerbread 2.3.3 on the baseband I9000XXJVQ.
The kernel I am using is 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVP.
There is no software update available. I live in Australia. How can I root my phone?
Thanks,
Lachlan

Install this app, you will get root, if you phone is locked under contract, like Telstra, you might have problem using the i9000 ROMS to upgrade, if its international i9000, you can use any combination of 2.3.6 gingerbread ROM and same JVQ modem (meaning modems can be switched.)

The "best" firmware to use will depend on what type of firmware you want:
- If you want a firmware specifically meant for Bell i9000m phones, it would be the UGKG3 firmware. It is the only Gingerbread firmware released so far for us Canadians. It runs Gingerbread 2.3.3, but be aware that there are no custom kernels for it yet. There is only a rooted stock kernel available. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211939
- If you want a firmware that was meant for the international i9000 model, there are many many roms that you can try. There are roms which are stock (like XXJVQ/XXJVR 2.3.4), roms which are modded from those stock roms (like Juwe's, Insanity, Darky's, etc.), and completely rebuilt custom roms (like CM7/MIUI 2.3.5). There are lots and lots to choose from.

you can root by using an app or with in update from recovery or through your PC without flashing a kernel with root & CWM, if root is all you want . For links look at My Android collections below

[Q] Update from 2.3.4 gingerbread to 2.3.6

Hey guys-
Looked for a thread about this and didn't find anything.
I read in some blog that in order to flash my stock rom to cyanogenmod 7.2, I need to have the latest gingerbread update.
a) is this true?
b) if so, how do I do it? Do I have to root it again once I get an official update?
thanks!
a. Nope. 2.3.4 is good. You can use 2.3.6 but not needed.
b. Yes, but as I said 2.3.4 works.
My baseband (stock ROM when I flashed CM is called baseband) is XXKPK 2.3.4. It works perfectly. But you need stock 2.3.6 from your country otherwise, 3G and GPS will not work.
So I purchased the phone in the country I live in - that mean I'm good to go?

Yes, as long as your phone is 2.3.x (Gingerbread) it's alright to flash CWM and then flash custom roms, don't have to be the latest version (2.3.6).

Yes. But if you want to update it to 2.3.6 you need to find a stock ROM from your country at samfirmware.com. But you don't need to update, because 2.3.4 is good. Now it depends on you.
