So I have an i897 Captivate here. I've called AT&T and they gave me an unlock code for it.
I also have a new, never used AT&T SIM card installed in the phone.
I want to unlock the phone and hand it to my girlfriend so she has as few problems as possible when she goes to put the phone on a pre-paid plan of her choosing (I have no idea which it will be).
And I have installed a rooted Froyo ROM.
So how do I unlock it? All the guides I've found say I need to either be connected to a data plan already, or have a non-AT&T SIM installed. Neither of which are possible at the moment.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Well, the only thing that comes to mind is to ask a friend to give you his/her non-AT&T SIM card for 2min.
Insert a sim and it will ask u for a unlock code

Hi I'm coming to the USA for a couple of weeks and I was wondering if I can walk to an AT&T store and buy the Captivate off-contract (USD499) and then use it Europe.
I know that I need to unlock the phone before actually popping a European simcard in, but since the unlock codes have already being discovered, this should be easy right?
has someone done this succesfully?? pls tell me if you have!
Thanks!
Yes i am using AT&T Captivate in Turkey with Vodafone. Its very easy to unlock. I bought from BestBuy.
Once you get Froyo, the phone may get locked again and it maybe difficult to unlock the phone as at&t wont give out codes yet
using samsung captivate here in India! ! ! unlocked, runnin on cog2.2beta7! !
whoo hoo!!
you can easily unlock the phone and use it anywhere you want....once you have unlock codes you can use it to unlock any number of times...also no need to get official Samsung/att FROYO release when we have DG putting out such good stuff with cognition...
Thanks Algorismus, waghoba and neo_31591 I'm very glad to hear that!!!!
but since you have already done it I may ask you what do you need to unlock the phone? I mean do you need an AT&T sim card to unlock the phone?? did they give you a sim card when you bought the phone??
I ask you this because all the threads I've seen to unlock the phone assume that you have an AT&T sim card, but what if you don't (my case)?

ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE THREAD BELOW.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761751
AS YOU ARE BUYING THE PHONE WITH NO COMMITMENT(AKA NO CONTRACT) YOU DON'T GET A SIM CARD. THE WHOLE UNLOCK PROCESS CAN BE DONE WITHOUT A SIM CARD IN THE PHONE AS THE CODE IS IN THE PHONE ITSELF.
I'M FROM SOUTH AFRICA AND I'M USING AN UNLOCKED CAPTIVATE.
P.S. MAKE SURE TO KEEP YOUR UNLOCK CODE IN A SAFE PLACE DUE TO THE LEAKED FROYO BUILD DELETING THE FILE WITH THE UNLOCK CODE FROM THE PHONE.

Im in Australia and have 4 Samsung Captivates (Brother/ Girlfirend/ Mine + spare) from AT&T. All off of ebay, unlocked and running cog beta and cog aosp
A decision you wont regret, unless you have a fudgecicle captivate with no warranty support. keep that in mind.

There is a risk that you will not have warranty, but i think it worths, and USA is cheaper than my country(Nearly %50 cheaper).
You dont need AT&T sim card. It tooks 5 minutes to unlock.
lol seriously, i just went through all the threads, and once my cappy was with me, within 5 mins of its arrival i had it unlocked, rooted, sideloading enabled, updated to jh7 and in another 15-20 mins i had it on cogv2.2beta7!!
its the best thng u can have....my ipodtouch seems like cheap knockoff now
Using Captivate in Greece, bought it from e-bay unlocked.
Running Cognition 2.1 no problems so far.
Using captivate in Czech Republic. Bought from e-bay unlocked

Am I missing something here. Why put on froyo 2.2 when it was released with 2.3 Gingerbread? Or is it just that froyo mod rom is better than std gingerbread?
I have a rooted captivate for sale.... If someone wants to make an offer....

Hello all,
I'm new to all this unlocking and rooting thing so I wanted to ask you something.
Today I ordered from Amazon Samsung Captivate Galaxy S AT&T branded. The thing is that I live in Georgia, so there is no such thing as AT&T
I read as much to learn that I need to unlock my phone, but no one has ever mentioned if it's possible without having the branded SIM card.
So can I unlock my phone without having AT&T SIM card?
Yes you can unlock without sim card. If you get service through any carrier other than at&t that uses sim cards, you will be asked for unlock code.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Once you insert sim from "other carrier" the phone will ask for unlock code.. enter code at this time.

I do believe there is an app, that will find and store the code. Then when you insert other carriers sim, it unlocks automatically. There are quite a few posts about unlocking in the developement section..

First of all thank you very much for lightening-quick reply.
I'll try to look but I've never had an android and I'm interested, will it start without sim card? if not, how can I install the app for generating unlock code? or did you mean to get code by PC app?
Thanks in advance,
Gio
Ya your phone will start without a SIM card in it, and i believe the app he was reffering to earlier was one found in the android market
Thank you all
That feels much safe
Thank you all for your time
I think I'll handle from here
Does rooting with androot automatically unlock a G1?
If not, how do unlock a G1? How can I tell if a G1 is already unlocked?
Thanks

Let me try;
Root(ing) - (Gaining) Administrator / Full access of the Android Operating System
Unlock(ing) - (Enabling) phone to accept not just the SIM card from its original designated network (T-Mobile US - example).
Test Root by running su on term emulator.
Test Unlock by inserting a different SIM card

Thanks Guys,
So, Rooting does automatically unlock the G1?
I purchased a G1 on ebay, and apparently, it is unlocked, but it looks like the original 1.6 is still there. So I am wondering how that is done.
Doesn't really matter anyways, I am going to root it when it gets here.
Heeter
You can unlock G1 on 1.6, that is what I did with my G1 from T-Mobile. Once unlocked, it stay unlocked.
Unlocking has nothing to do with rooting your G1. Rooting give you administrative privilage so you can do what you want on the phone.
So, BA.
How did you unlock it?
Heeter
Got the unlock code FREE from T-Mobile. Basically, call them up and requested the unlock code. After a certain time T-Mobile will give you the unlock code (when you requested) if you needed to unlock your G1 when you go on a trip (that required you to use the other network) to different place (IE: other country). That is what I did.
In your case, if you are not the original owner of the G1 with the T-Mobile account, and the G1 is not unlocked. You'll probably have to pay for the unlock code. My brother pass me down the G1, so that what we did.
Awesome, thanks for explaination, BA

Rooting does not unlock your phone. Nor does it work the other way around, they are completely separate.
The only way to get the unlock code free is to get it from T-mobile, which they will really only give you if you got your phone from them. You can use virgin mobile without unlocking.
advice please

the phone belongs to my brother but he was told that he will have to pay £15 to get unlock code from tmobile.
if i buy unlock code from e.g. ebay will the phone stay sim unlocked even if i upgrade/downgrade operating system?
also - after sim unlock- will g1 be able to access data from other networks at registration stage (just after booting)?

They can give it free, but it depends on circumstances.

Yes & yes, the network lock has nothing to do with the OS.
I looked around for a bit when I first got my UK G1 a few days ago trying to figure out the same question.
Unlocking and rooting are completely separate. There is no way to unlock your phone by rooting it or installing software hacks or mods. Also, once you unlock your phone using a code from TMB or eBay, etc. it will ALWAYS stay unlocked, no matter what you do in terms of rooting, installing custom ROMs, etc.
I just paid £3.85 for an unlock code from eBay instead. I got it within a few minutes and it worked immediately. Now I'm using it with my Orange SIM card without any problems. I would have phoned T-Mobile up but I'm not the original owner of the phone and I didn't want to hassle the original owner with it, since he had already given me the phone for free. So paying a few quid for an unlock code didn't really bother me.
Wow, I went a bit off-topic there, lol
I'm running CM 7 nightly build 140 on my Captivate. I am wondering is it Sim unlocked now? Can I put other Sim cards in it? Or do I still need to unlock it? I guess I'm a little confused on whether just loading a modified ROM unlocks the phone or is there an extra procedure to do that?
I've tried asking this question on the cyanogenmod forum but nobody ever answers anything on that forum. XDA is so much better.
Main reason I'm asking is, I'd like to try a Sim card from a Straight Talk Nokia E71 in my Captivate, see how it works. That $45/month unlimited everything plan cant be beat.
Thanks!
Putting a custom ROM on your phone will not unlock it, you should try an app from the market. Galaxy unlock or something like that.

Hey everyone,
I recently bought a HD2 for flashing fun, then I realized it was locked to one of the telcos that I don't use.
I just wondered if an app exists like on some other phones to remove the sim lock. Or flashing a file or debranded rom will do it.
Thanks so much

I don't believe there is a program or app that you can use you to SIM unlock your device.
You need a IMEI code to unlock it. Search the internet for a company that does it and compare prices, usually costs between $10 -$25
I used this company over a year ago to unlock a AT&T phone that I bought so I could switch it to TMobile, which was the service that I had.
They sell you the IMEI unlock code and then you insert the new carriers SIM card or one from an already activated device, restart the phone and enter the IMEI code. The new service has to be a GSM network for it to work. You might have to setup your APN to get internet working properly.
This is the company that I used and this is the link for the HD2.

Here's another one that does it.
