Hi I'm coming to the USA for a couple of weeks and I was wondering if I can walk to an AT&T store and buy the Captivate off-contract (USD499) and then use it Europe.
I know that I need to unlock the phone before actually popping a European simcard in, but since the unlock codes have already being discovered, this should be easy right?
has someone done this succesfully?? pls tell me if you have!
Thanks!
Yes i am using AT&T Captivate in Turkey with Vodafone. Its very easy to unlock. I bought from BestBuy.
Once you get Froyo, the phone may get locked again and it maybe difficult to unlock the phone as at&t wont give out codes yet
using samsung captivate here in India! ! ! unlocked, runnin on cog2.2beta7! !
whoo hoo!!
you can easily unlock the phone and use it anywhere you want....once you have unlock codes you can use it to unlock any number of times...also no need to get official Samsung/att FROYO release when we have DG putting out such good stuff with cognition...
Thanks Algorismus, waghoba and neo_31591 I'm very glad to hear that!!!!
but since you have already done it I may ask you what do you need to unlock the phone? I mean do you need an AT&T sim card to unlock the phone?? did they give you a sim card when you bought the phone??
I ask you this because all the threads I've seen to unlock the phone assume that you have an AT&T sim card, but what if you don't (my case)?

ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE THREAD BELOW.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761751
AS YOU ARE BUYING THE PHONE WITH NO COMMITMENT(AKA NO CONTRACT) YOU DON'T GET A SIM CARD. THE WHOLE UNLOCK PROCESS CAN BE DONE WITHOUT A SIM CARD IN THE PHONE AS THE CODE IS IN THE PHONE ITSELF.
I'M FROM SOUTH AFRICA AND I'M USING AN UNLOCKED CAPTIVATE.
P.S. MAKE SURE TO KEEP YOUR UNLOCK CODE IN A SAFE PLACE DUE TO THE LEAKED FROYO BUILD DELETING THE FILE WITH THE UNLOCK CODE FROM THE PHONE.

A decision you wont regret, unless you have a fudgecicle captivate with no warranty support. keep that in mind.

There is a risk that you will not have warranty, but i think it worths, and USA is cheaper than my country(Nearly %50 cheaper).
You dont need AT&T sim card. It tooks 5 minutes to unlock.
lol seriously, i just went through all the threads, and once my cappy was with me, within 5 mins of its arrival i had it unlocked, rooted, sideloading enabled, updated to jh7 and in another 15-20 mins i had it on cogv2.2beta7!!
its the best thng u can have....my ipodtouch seems like cheap knockoff now
Using Captivate in Greece, bought it from e-bay unlocked.

Am I missing something here. Why put on froyo 2.2 when it was released with 2.3 Gingerbread? Or is it just that froyo mod rom is better than std gingerbread?
I have a rooted captivate for sale.... If someone wants to make an offer....

No, there is no solution available at the moment. A couple of people have been able to persuade ATT to give them codes after many days of phone calls and support chat. A few have had some varying success with turbo sims that supposedly fool the phone into thinking the sim is an ATT sim, but that's it.
based on what I have read online. ATT often will unlock your phone when you are in the contract for like 6 months or a year.
I called them with my tilt 2 about a year into my contract. Tell them that I am traveling oversea and want to use the phone internationally. They gave me the code without much hassle.
Not sure if this is partially due to the fact I have been with ATT for years.
Online search also shows that ATT will often unlock almost all smartphoen for you except iPhone, so keep try them and if the CSR does not help, ask for supervisor.

The official requirements are:
1. at least 90 days into a contract
2. Have a post paid account with contract
3. Paid all bills on time.

Captivate has proven to be an exception to this. There is already a long thread about Sim Unlock. The bottom line is AT&T won't give you a unlock code for Captivate until 10 months later.

Hi jentech
have read the whole thread "SIM unlock" till yet and have not a good feeling when my captivate will arrive to contact AT&T for the unlock code.
I never has been a AT&T customer cause living outside the US and won´t be to become one so hope they could understand my problem...
Do you have an email contact for their support-center?

If you're not an AT&T customer, they typically won't help you with unlock at all. Good luck.
Not sure why there is another unlock thread, but At&T told me they would. Unlock in 90 days. I have no reason to doubt them.

unlock Captivate with froyo
today i unlocked my captivate with an app called Galaxy S Unlock get it in the market very easy to do also on youtube i am running froyo 2.2, version I897ucji6 and i am rooted (need to be rooted)
Finally got the captivate to unlock and accept the tmobile sim today. Everything seems to be working fine so far. No data on the plan but using wifi til I add data. One thing I'm really curious about is.... Now that the phone is unlocked and working, If I flash a custom rom (say cognition for example) will I lose the "unlock" ?
*edit* forgot to say how I did it... I just simply flashed back to stock 2.1, master cleared, rooted, installed busybox and galaxy unlock app, used the #2 method with the unlock app and it worked. PATIENCE IS KEY! ===> It takes a good 2-4 minutes for the tmobile signal to kick in so it may seem as if the unlock failed but it just takes alot longer than the at&t signal to kick in.

You've post this already in paragon thread...simply no you are permanently unlock now the lock code inside your phone has been wiped out by the app you used.
I unlocked my samsung captivate right after i got this beautiful phone. And I am expecting the Froyo now. I am not sure if the unlock will be erased by new new version of android.
If it will happen, I will just wait until XDA release the new unlock app.

Once the captivate is unlocked, it stays unlocked. Im not sure about factory reset but nothing else will remove the unlock.

No one knows what the next version will do - but you should know this. The unlock happened because Samsung stored the code in a file. It looks like new firmwares fixed this, so if the unlock is removed, it may not be so easy to get.
The app just read a file and got the code. You didn't need the app, you could have opened the file and read the read the code. IF the unlock is removed and the original code doesn't work, it will be a while before someone finds a new way to unlock.

Thx, I can wait till I see a new post about what gonna happe.
captivate is coming here in Canada but I cant wait to grab the captivate so i get the AT&T version. to my surprise, i got it factory unlocked (the online store where i purchase GSM phones factory unlocked). It has all AT&T bloatwares and logo but I punch in and use my non-AT&T sim on the captivate.
i removed the bloatware apps. now the problem is I cannot update OTA, coz AT&T server for update is the captivate recognizes.
this would be a regret on being impatient on grabbing the captivate that will be launched here, but i learned a lot of tricks and hacks from this forum. I believe that developers will come up with a ROM flash technique to update the captivate even not OTA. (like the N900 re-flash).
I was told by an AT&T rep (so take it for what it's worth) that for any phone except the iPhone, you could simply call AT&T and ask for an unlock code. Don't if this would work on rooted phones or not though.

Well that's a bunch of BS. The rep I spoke to said you needed to call in for it, so I don't know if that makes a difference. And he seemed to be one of the senior guys there. The reason I even asked the rep about this is because my wife goes to the Philippines a lot, and it's cheaper to buy a local SIM card there than use AT&T's coverage.

hello every body
first thanks for your great efforts , I am seeking your help again plzzzzz.....
I had droid 3 and stolen from 2 days ago I live in Egypt with GSM network , My Droid 3 unlocked was working perfect here) , now i will get a new mobile , I guess it will be Droid 4 as extend for my beloved stolen phone
When I was looking for it on eBay and Amazon I became so confused , as I found
1-Version Droid 4 locked
2-Unlocked Droid 4
3-Unlocked Droid 4 international use
Now my question is which one will work with my local GSM ? please note that a big price diffident between unlocked and locked one , the locked one is more more cheaper , if I buy the locked can I locked it and works perfect with GSM or have I buy unlocked one ?
Thanks in advance
AFAIK they are all the same. If it has ICS it is unlocked for international use. If it still has Gingerbread, I think you can still upgrade to ICS using WiFi.

The only lock on the Droid 4 is that you cannot use it on American GSM carriers, i.e. T-Mobile USA and AT&T. This lock is irrelevant to you as you are in Egypt, unless you intend to travel to the USA and use this phone.
The unlocked one is being sold by Devices Now. It is possible that they have found somewhat to unlock it for US GSM, though if they have they aren't sharing it with these forums. They are a pretty good seller as they were one of the first to offer this phone pre-flashed to ICS for people wanting to use it on GSM.
That said, if you are happy enough with flashing the phone to ICS yourself, and don't intend to use it in the USA, go ahead and get the cheaper one.
thanks a lot Lum_Uk , but is the flashing is just updating the phone to ICS ? I mean when i bought the cheaper one just i need to update it via wire wireless or i have to do something else ?

To flash ICS all u need is the phone and a wire to connect it to your computer (and possibly a sd card).

Yes just updating it to ICS, though many people have found that the OTA update doesn't always work, so have to flash it the hard way

Just a little update for everybody here. Just because a Droid 4 has Ice Cream Sandwich or Jellybean doesn't mean it's already unlocked for GSM or international use. Having an Ice Cream Sandwich or Jellybean ROM means that the phone is ABLE to be unlocked from the carrier. The phone DOES NOT come unlocked with each ROM. You have to call Verizon to get an unlock code or pay for an unlock code through one of the measly online websites. I have much experience with this as I was in the Army for a while and took my US Android phone to Iraq and Kuwait with me. You have to put an unlock code into the device for it to be unlocked. Therefore...I would purchase a Droid 4 that has been unlocked previously. You can tell when you put a different SIM card into the phone,it will ask you for the unlock code or tell you the device is unlocked. Just wanted to clarify that for everybody.

Sorry but this is complete rubbish. It may be true for other phones, but the Verizon Droid 4, once flashed to ICS or JB, will work internationally without any codes, custom ROMs or hacking.
My Droid 4 has never even seen the Verizon network, and I don't have an account with Verizon and no way to contact them to get a code. It just works.
Plenty of others in the same situation on this forum, loads of us are using it on GSM without having to get Verizon's permission.
^^ Truth! There is no SIM lock on any VZW Motorola LTE capable device.
The last Verizon Motorola global device to have a SIM lock was the Droid3, which was a CDMA/EVDO/GSM/UMTS global device.

Hahaha schooled! Not trying to be mean but its generally smart to know what your talking about before u spew bullish out of your mouth and look like an idiot. As lum stated droid 4 isn't locked to Verizon or any carrier. Through build prop tweaks it does work very nicely at that.

Should probably add, since they are in Ohio, that GSM is locked out for US carriers. This isn't locked out with an unlock code but at the firmware level. So far nobody has broken that and unlock codes don't exist. There's a big sticky at the top of the forum with the current progress in dealing with this problem.
So I have an i897 Captivate here. I've called AT&T and they gave me an unlock code for it.
I also have a new, never used AT&T SIM card installed in the phone.
I want to unlock the phone and hand it to my girlfriend so she has as few problems as possible when she goes to put the phone on a pre-paid plan of her choosing (I have no idea which it will be).
And I have installed a rooted Froyo ROM.
So how do I unlock it? All the guides I've found say I need to either be connected to a data plan already, or have a non-AT&T SIM installed. Neither of which are possible at the moment.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

I can tell you that I have had my S6 for about 4 days and I put my prepaid sim card in it instead of the one it came with (had to create a postpaid account so that I could get this phone!). I tried to unlock with the app on the phone and it told me NO, I am not eligible to do that, but I just tried it a 3rd time about 30 mins ago and BOOM! I am permanently unlocked and can confirm that AT&T works great! The phone rebooted and it automatically froze the unlock app. LOL I un froze the app and sure enough, I am perm unlocked! Not bad for using the phone for less than a week and not calling T-Mobile even once to ask. Just wanted to give people a heads up in case u wanted to try this yourself with a pre-paid sim (if u have a prepaid account, of course). I love my $30 plan! :good:
Damn might have to try this out. Thanks!

I am not the one who discovered this - but from my understanding - you should be able to put the TMOBILE Sim Card into the phone (from the friend who has been on TMOBILE for a long time) and from what someone else said, the unlock ap wil unlock hyour phone. Then switch the Sim Card with the ATT sim card and you should be good to go.
Check oout the QA Thread for details - here is the post where someone else explained it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s6/help/unlocked-s6-att-t3069140/page2 GOOD LUCK -i hope it works for you - I don't know anyone on TMOBILE so I can't try it myself yet...

TMOBILE S6 has an unlocked bootloader - BUT the SIM CARD is locked - the guy who posted here was apparently a long time customer on TMOBILE and because he has had an active account for longer than 40 days, he can unlock his sim card using the ap that comes on the phone. BUT if you want to use tmobile S6 on ATT - y ou may have to wait 40 days to get the SIM Card unlocked - unless you possibly know someone who has been on TMOBILE for a while and they let you use their SIM Card to get your phone unlocked....

There seems to be some misinformation in this thread. I am a prepaid customer who hops around from different prepaid companies for the best rate plan/price and am currently with Harbor Mobile (T-Mobile agent) and I purchased some minutes for my prepaid $30 plan on T-Mobile prior to grabbing the S6 JUST so i could test out the unlocking. The unlock rules apply to each device that are on your account so while I may have been on T-Mobile prepaid for about a year, it was off and on and NOT continuous service which you must have at least 40 days of continuous service PER device that u want to unlock. So, I unlocked my Note 4 a couple of months ago through them but I just received my S6 so I would have had to wait 40 days to get my unlock because it's a new device AND I have failed to maintain continuous service for 40 days anyways, even if the other rule applied. Also, the reason I mentioned that it worked on the 3rd or 4th day I had the phone is because it literally takes T-Mobiles system that damn long for them to actually tell which device you have on their network. I don't know why they can't tell right away but I have swapped devices many times and I have found out that the 3 day rule applies ( at least to prepaid) cause when I call them up for a question or problem after I have swapped my phone they have no idea which one I'm using so anyway, I just wanted to give some more insight on what I have experienced through my time with T-Mobile prepaid and how their system works based on what I have been told and my experiences. I can almost guarantee you aren't just going to be able to throw your buddies sim in and unlock your phone! That would just be waaaay too easy and why would any carrier want to give you the easy way out?? LOL Anyways, take care guys and hopefully I helped answer a few questions. I will be off and on so I can answer any questions u may have relating to my experiences. You most certainly can try any method you think may work but I think I got lucky somehow and really it was VERY odd! I think it will be figured out very soon though so no need to worry as we already know they can be unlocked and I already confirmed this model works with AT&T 100%. :good:
Were u rooted when u unlocked it?

Used my friend's Tmobile SIM card, and tried permanently unlocking it, didn't work. Even Temporary unlock didn't work. He's been a long time customer with TMo
I can confirm that official T-Mobile "Device Unlock" app unlocked my phone. First thing I did when I got the phone.. Using the T-Mobile Sim that came with the phone, opened up Device Unlock (pre-installed by the way), confirmed to unlock, no freezing no nothing it just worked and rebooted.
Phone is on a business account, upgraded via Jump 1.0, unlock prior to the OTA if any of this matters

It sure does. Business accounts can be unlocked much quicker than personal accounts. Lucky you, enjoy her--she's a beast
i paid in full for the s6 , when i tried to unlock with the app it said cannot be unlocked , contacted the cust. support and they said you have to wait 40 days
i went to twitter and wrote some tweets to @Tmobile usa and they responded immediately and after showing them the proof of my purchase they said to try the app again and it worked ,,,
twitter helps
Just to be clear...
Everyone who successfully attempted this paid off the phone in full?
No EIP? Correct?
Just here to check updates. I am a full on tmo customer and am thinking of trying this. Even though I don't need it. Would be nice to just have it.

You can get it temporarily unlocked if still on eip for like going put of the country but not permanent. Has to be paid on full and used on the network for 40 days unless they give you a special unlock if you ***** enough
