[Q] Do you recommend keeping my Xperia Z ? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody
This is my first post here, and I need some advice about the Xperia Z.
I have just bought my xperia Z (still sealed but with no warranty or a limited one).
I was looking forward of buying the xperia Z after my xperia neo v was starting to age (great phone btw) . My neo was a great phone, I really liked it and it never let me down. It took alot of abuse and been used to the max, but still standing. I'm a VERY heavy user and I use my phone alot. Although I'm not a heavy gamer but I use my phone to talk, text, organize, playing music, net radio, browsing etc. I'm also not the one who really take care of his phone, I like my phone uncovered, and expected to be able to take some heavy drops and be able to stick into my tight pocket with all of the keys and stuff, with almost invisible scratches.
So after reading the reviews and specifications of xperia Z I was very enthusiastic about this phone. I bought the phone despite that it's out of my budget price ( Thanks mum). But as I roamed into the forums (espically this one) things started to get ugly.
Many people here complained about:
Screen easily cracks
The back panel opens up
And the adhesive used is not heat resistant.
Problem is, I'm supposedly paying alot of money for this durable, advanced and sexy phone, that matches my needs. But right now I'm reconsidering because the two major faults will probably happen to me. First I don't take excessive care with my phone , and I expect the phone to endure some beating . Also I live in a very hot environment so the back panel will defiantly pop. And from what I've hears here Sony customer service sucks.
So what you guys think, should I keep this phone or sell it
Your advise will be highly appreciated
Thanks in advanced

If it is something you plan on dropping then I probably wouldn't recommend this. Maybe the Samsung S4 Active? Still is water and dust proof but the plastics on the Galaxy phones don't break. Screen will still be an issue.

The screen doesn't easily cracks. I was one of the OP for one of the threads. Mine was more of a freak accident.. and if the screen does break the digitizer will most likely break also. Even with that said I'm planning to get another one.

Well I would recommend xperia v or xperia zr for removable battery, and durability might be better than z.. According to ur needs I suggest sell ur xperia z off. Sorry..

I'm a heavy user too, and live in a hot and humid environment (near Shanghai). I've had no problems whatsoever with this phone. I recommend it.

senseless thread
i don't want to be mean, but...
"i like to listen to music, but i like to watch movies as well. shall i buy the new blue ray with my favourite actor, or shall i keep my cd with my favorite singer? what do you suggest?"

Keep the phone.
Remember, what you read on the web are all the people who have had a problem, and while it seems like a lot, it's nothing compared with the number of people who don't have any problems, because they don't go around exclaiming how they have no problems.
All phone have some common defects to a small percentage of users. As far as breaking the glass goes, out of all the top of the line phones it's the least likely to break because the glass has a shock absorbing coating on it. I don't think any others do. Even though you like your phone without a case, how about just a thine bumper around the edge?
The back panel and adhesive issues are very rare, and would most defiantly be covered under warranty.

I'm interested in buying the xperia x1

I'm considering to buy the xperia x1 but I've done research on the phone and there are apparently cracks showing on the phone after a period of time.
Based on research, it shows that it mainly occur to only the silver xperia x1 as people are saying, the phone is made by hard plastic, but the black one has rubber feeling on it? Can someone clarify that please?
Would be much appreciated if someone can give me all the answers i'm looking for, cos my old phone just died and i'm in need of a new phone.
I believe xperia's way of functioning and the windows mobile feature is the perfect phone for me, but if there are so much problem with it, i really do not wish to spend a fair amount of money and have no satisfactory.
Thank you to all the people that reply in advance !
So far my Xperia (black) has no cracks. But since I bought it in september 2009 I think I have to wait a bit before delivering a definitive judgement.
By the way: No offence meant but I doubt that everybody whose Xperia got cracked has always treated it appropriately. I would not be surprised if some of the people who complain about cracks in their Xperia's case had dropped the phone several times.
I do not doubt that there is a general problem with cracks but my personal experience from my time as a multimedia shop assistant is that some customers are not always honest when claiming warranty for their devices.
I highly recommend you the Xperia X1 because it's a great device. It has a beatiful high resulution screen on which movies and pictures look simply incredible. The panel system is really unique (you have the possibility to use different user interfaces simultaneously) and and thanks to Windows Mobile it is completely up to you what you want to do with your phone (no restrictions like on the Iphone).

You can always recognize a noob when u see one....well actually you can treat it like a baby prince but this sh** will crack !!

Although I can imagine why you'd think that, it's not correct. Even people who treated it with utmost care (never dropping, using carrying case, even silicone protectors) got cracks. Hell, nearly everyone did.
I've got this phone for over a year now; it lasted long, but eventually, two weeks back - guess what? Cracks. Guess I couldn't skip this dance either.
had mine for over a year never seen a crack on it
maybe it's a question on how often and violently one
access the stylus

the most common cracks are not near the stylus but rather on the frame around the battery...and these have nth t do with usage...
Unless u'll say it depends on how violently and often one removes the battery
Folks like I wrote I don't want to accuse anybody of anything. It's just like this my Xperia has never been dropped and guess what, it has no cracks at all. But I also stated that my Xperia is still relatively new and thus I cannot deliver a judgement yet.
It's sad that some people feel obliged to insult others by calling them noobs as soon as they discover that others look at things differently.
But back to topic: What I like also about the x1 is its keyboard and its general look and feel. It's really a pleasure to hold it in my hands. And I like the quality of audio playback too.
Yes, X1 has its shortcomings too (tell me a device that hasn't) but I totally recommend this phone.
I would Defiantly recommend the X1 it's an amazing phone. I sort of had problems with hanging once in awhile but after I installed 6.5 all that has stopped. As for the cracks I guess it depends, I didn't get cracks until I dropped my phone but thats normal if you drop your phone on a hard surface multiple times, the same with every phone I had so far but I guess people are saying they havent dropped once it and still got cracks so IDK. I swear on my life the Back cover is steel not rubber. Edit nvm I don't have the black one so I don't know if it's different from the Silver one.
mine black back is steel aswell... but there is rubber on top and bottom of back
Thanks, you guys are awesome for the reply.
Its a definite that i'm gonna get the phone now.
The windows mobile just gets my attention so badly haha. Thank you all for the reply and your personal opinion, much appreciated !

[POLL] Z or ZL which would you choose ?

Hi guys ! Like many of you I've read a lot of reviews and watched videos of this two awesome devices and have a hard time deciding which of them should I get (the price is not a killer factor) . So from the first look I was really impressed by Z's water- and dustproof capabilities as well as it's premium materials (tempered glass etc.) However , I was a bit discouraged with those rubbery plugs hiding all ports. I mean I understand their purpose but firstly I'm a bit afraid that past time they will get cranky or something if use them regulary. Moreover I am constanly loading files through Usb and listening to music , so I will have to open up plugs for mini jack and usb pretty frequently ... That's why I started to give preference to ZL which is plug free and is a bit smaller which is also good point for it . On the dark side I must say that I like Z's back cover way more than ZL's (looks cheaper at least on videos) which is made of plastic ... Can live with it,but I pay a lot of attention for the build quality of the device and just not sure that the plastic cover of ZL will be rock solid as Z's glass (but I hope ) So for now I have this thoughts and my choise meter is like ZL 45% - 55% Z . Share your thouths on this guys I'm sure some of your arguments might help me abd other folks to make the best decision

Re: Z or ZL which would you choose ?
since you've said that build quality is important i think Z will have bit of an advantage on this front as you yourself know . Moreover i don't think the covered ports would pose much of a hindrance even if you are constantly transferring files via usb - you'll learn to handle it the way it needs to be handled in due time . The only plus of ZL from my point of view is its smaller dimensions (which i personally love). So if i were you Z would have been my obvious choice .
why fix it if it ain't broken ?
The water resistance of the Z was not made for you to shoot pictures while scuba diving but was only made for certain occasions where you need to use the phone to text while standing on an open area and got a broken umbrella lol or in case you drop it to some shallow water. So with those instances even a worn out plugs for the ports would work. On the plastic back cover of ZL can't really say anything as I haven't seen the device close up so cannot comment on how the plastic is built. It could be prone to cracks when dropped unless it's made of some special material.
Also with regards to the tempered glass durability I can't imagine it not breaking/chipping parts of it if it ever fall on a hard concrete but on the Xperia ZL it "may" only bounce off without any damage.
Re: Z or ZL which would you choose ?
Z for me. Water and dust resistance are big deals to me since I've lost 2 phones before to dunking.
That bit of reassurance is fantastic and you wouldn't expect it in a device that looks that sleek.

Z... she has a sexy back
Coming from the galaxy s2 i would 100% go for the z over the zl. I want a phone that feels premium but that is also going to last for a 2 year period.
I can see your point about the rubber casing for the ports, but i am hoping they will be of good enough quality not to crack or go loose.

I just want the IR blaster on the ZL. will probably go with the Z though, the ZL's back is just not sexy after seeing the Z

Undecided - should I sell my One?

I've had a One for a few months but a couple of weeks ago I woke up to find it dead, after what I'd consider very minor liquid exposure (phone left in damp jeans overnight following drink spillage)
So, I have a new one arriving through my insurance claim but I'm now nervous that it seems pretty fragile after this experience - and critically, I can't make any more insurance claims this year if it breaks again as I claimed for a dead s3 this year also...
Am I right in thinking this isn't the hardiest phone out there? Should I sell up and go for the tougher Xperia? I just stick with my s3? It's not like the One does a huge amount the s3 couldn't.
Seriously undecided - thoughts?
I'm considering getting rid of my One for other reasons and one of the phones I'm considering is the Xperia Z. Just waiting for it to come out on T-Mob, AT&T, or Google Edition.
How is the Xperia "sturdier" It's full glass. The only way it's "sturdier" is that it can survive water..
I think it depends on what you're looking in your phone.
If you found that the One is perfect for you and the only thing that bothers you is its water resistant, so just take care of it a little bit more.
Else, if you know you can't keep it far from danger, you may take Xperia Z.

If it was left wrapped in damp material there is a very good chance this is what would happen to a lot of phones.
Not having a dig in any way, but you've claimed twice in a year which suggests you need to look after them a bit more.

Agreed, unless you had a waterproof phone then most phones would have become damaged its your own stupid fault, look after phones more. Good luck on claiming about the xperias back if you drop it and smash it.

You're saying that a full glass phone will take a beating better than an aluminum one? Sure, the One might have dinks if it's being bumped around, but chances are the Xperia will be totally shattered so.. I still don't see how you think glass is "stronger" in that sense than metal.

I'm referring to the screen.
Why would only worry about the screen? Both use glass. The Xperia is full glass all around and has a much worse screen. If you're as careless as you seem to be, ain't nothing gonna save you from destroying any phone unfortunately.

This
The One is very sturdy indeed, mine's survived a good few drops now, but the Z was tougher. The glass on the Z is bendy, Dragontail I believe, and the frame is a toughened material that's far stronger than the One.
For every other reason other than waterproof ability, I would choose the One.
The S3 is incredibly fragile. Two people I know have shattered their screens, one of them trice, purely from dropping them from around 1 foot high.

This is certainly true, so annoying. It's not a particularly grippy phone either - I dropped it twice in a year, both pretty minor but the screen cracked both times. I only claimed on insurance so I could sell it...
And thanks for the helpful response, much more useful than everyone who seems to know everything about how I care for my possessions.
Seems their is no specific comments around the One being particularly bad with minor liquid contact so I'll take that as a good sign, swayiing towards sticking with the one at the moment.
The xperia isn't sturdier at all, saying that all phones when naked are pretty weak, none of them will take a 6 foot fall in the right place, so with that in mind the only reason to move to the xperia is because you fear dropping it in water and or you plan to use it under water or around it.
For me the One is the best phone of the year for many reasons, you have to weigh up what suits you best.
Leaving your phone in wet anything is pretty stupid though, would you leave 500 quid in damp jeans? Your laptop in a wet environment? No, so don't do it with your phone.

Forgot to mention, liquid damage of any kind is a guessing game unless you plan to test each component, most of which the end user can't test anyway, I always assume the worst when it comes to liquid damage, that way i'm covered, plus thats what insurance is for.
If it's just a bit of water on the screen and nothing has seaped into the handset itself then you may be ok, but if it has gone into the handset then theres no telling what damage has been done.

Few doubts regarding Xperia Z..another confused soul!

Hi,
Currently I own HTC One X..I am thinking on upgrading but had few doubts regarding Xperia Z.
1) Any major problem with XZ even after latest updates?
2) Why development hasn't picked up much as this is a flagship device? It was launched long time ago as they say in mobile world.
3) Best choice among HTC one, HTC droid DNA ? Personally i don't think htc one is worth spending 42K...
4) Any design flaws? Is the phone delicate? Can it be used without case? I personally don't like phone with cases
It would be really helpful if my doubts are cleared. I am more inclined towards XZ
Thank You

None. As of .423 which is the 4.2.2 update, I cannot say there is any serious problem in the XZ's software. While there could be a couple of minor bugs, it is nothing like the bugs in HTC's software (I've come to the XZ from the Sensation)
I'm pretty sure there's been some, it's not like the Development forums are empty. I would also blame Sony for this. The stock software doesn't leave so much to be expected from the phone. Stock is great, which is why there are tons of mods, but only a few ROMs. Also, 4.2.2 source was only dropped a few days ago, give it some time, I'm sure there will be development.
I gave up on HTC because everything is so annoying and unnecessarily complicated. Why not go with an OEM that supports developers? Sony has been showing great support for the community over the last few months.
Flaps are annoying. Polycarbonate shell is prone to damage from falls. Case and screen protector are highly recommended if you're prone to dropping the phone.
If I may, I'd like to recommend this case that comes with a screen protector for the front. It feels so premium, it feels like a part of the phone
Hope this answers your questions.

if you want me to be honest,
the device does get hot easily and can be a bit uncomfortable in the hand.
what i mean to say is, the HTC one is more comfortable to hold.
xperia z is just a large rectangular thing with sharpish edges :/

[Q] The Vulnerability of Z3c is really worrying

I don't own one yet, but I have had an eye on it waiting for it to drop some price, but just as I was about to buy one, I suddenly check the comments on gsmarena, and bang, Z3c cracking all over the net! I have saved money for a long time to buy a phone that will satisfy me for years, but if I have to treat it like a thin glass which may suddenly break without any known reason, it will be years of frustration and stress, not satisfaction.
I have a Galaxy Wonder which I totally HATE, terrible performance, literally driving me crazy, but at least i don't have to worry about it suddenly breaking. I mean I understand mobiles should be treated with care, but at the same time manufacturers tend to build their phone in a way that makes it hard to accidentally break.
I am not sure I am going to buy this, but I thought I post here hoping for smth to change my mind because I totally love this phone and want it so bad!

I think you have to keep in mind here that those peoples devices that do crack will most likely post about it. Those whose screens have not cracked are not going to be posting, "yup, my screen hasn't cracked yet". In this sense there will be lots of negative comments about the screen because those that have experienced it will post about it.
Personally, I have dropped my phone naked on my marble floor and the most that has happened is the paint on the rounding has chipped a tiny bit. My glass is perfectly fine at the moment, I have no complaints.
I do now keep a case on it, but I am very tempted to make my own case (there isnt one out there that I like) that just covers the corners and has a skin on the back.
The phone is excellent! My only gripe is lack of root, but that will lessen when Android 5.0 (lollipop) comes out because it will sort out the ext-sd card limitations I am currently facing.
Yup, my screen hasn't cracked yet.
Lol

Dropped twice. It fell straight on its back once. My screen hasn't cracked yet :'D and no scratches even
Sent from my Compact Beast The Third.
I've dropped mine at least a half dozen times; it's in an inexpensive CruzerLite case. As near as I can tell, the phone seems indestructible. No cracks, no scratches.
Mine hasn't craked... sorry!!!
sorry to disappoint but, what cracks? still pretty solid on me
*knock on wood*
- dropped mine three times --> not a single scratch
- waterproof --> yes, I've tried it several times
- flaps open randomly --> nope, they are super solid and sealed
- screen cracks --> nope, and I carry it always in my pockets, sometimes I've even sat on it (silly me)
Only vulnerability that I see is that the back is quite slippery, but you can always get a cover for that.
Haha laughed a lot reading these comments, specially those who apologized for disappointing me by not cracking their phone . Apart from user feedback, there isn't much from official websites like gsmarena or Sony itself on this.
Well, I would not advise you to let it fall to try ^^ and I don't believe in self cracking phones, I'll believe it if it happens with my own one, which I'm am super careful with
But the phone is absolutely amazing !! I knew the "risk" and still bought it, I advise you to do the same
I had once a similar affair with a computer which had a design failure with the hinges, the screw threads were molded in the screen cover, with the torque required to open the lid, it was a sure recipe for a disaster, but at least it was something easy to repair yourself, compared to this phone. Yeah, I have no idea what could cause this phone to break, it doesn't get hot, it has top notch glass and the screen isn't a mechanical piece under heavy load ... Could something be reactive and releasing gases in the IP68 sealed phone ? No idea
Girlfriend and I both own this phone, and have dropped it many many times. Both still in perfect condition.
No problems here, love this phone.
I'll pick option 3, do a search and you'll see this is not a real problem.
I dropped mine once onto Spanish tile and it didn't break. Second time I wasn't so lucky. But it was also my fault - it fell onto a rock with a jagged point. I would have been blown away if it survived it. Even with my experience, I'd vouch for the phone's durability - so much so that I bought ANOTHER one happily
I've had mine for a couple of months now. I put a skinomi skin on the back soon after I got it, so I can't be positive that it hasn't cracked. However, I don't think it has. A couple of not-to-bad falls, and the front screen is still intact. The pressure test is also still good, so I don't think the back is compromised.
No cracks here. And the phone is a beauty and the beast in one package
Same here, dropped it many times, solid device.
One week and counting. Sat on it a couple of times. Nothing is cracked yet.
Every glass-backed phone has always been accompanied by reports of spontaneous cracking. Nothing new there. I've dropped my phone a few times (albeit with a case on) and it's unscathed. I also dropped my Nexus 4 many, many times without breaking it, and the N4 was also plagued with screen cracking complaints when it was released.
If I refused to buy something because of negative comments on forums then my life would be devoid of any gadgets (and I'd be much richer!)
Add a third option to the poll:
"I wear a case and i don't worry about it."
That's what the most owners should vote!
