Why Google Why - Google Chromecast

I know its forbidden as far as asking for ETAs, but does anyone have any insight or guesses when Google is going to release the new SDK and lift the restrictions? I mean are they totally redoing the SDK or are they just tweaking some stuff. Well better yet do we know if google is even going to go further with the chromecast, or abandon it basically like the Nexus Q. Just wondering peoples thoughts....hopefully someone can give us some kind of a hint.
Thanks

I'm sure they'll release it when its done, why would you think they would abandon it? It just came out and is a huge success.

Getting a little scared that they'll never release it

Not even everyone who ordered it yet has gotten it.
They have a preview SDK up and running lol.
No reason to freak out.

Reader's server costs didn't outweigh the money they made from ads.
wave still exists, just not worked on by google.
the other device in the list (nexus q) was canned before it was released. It only had a few more features than a chromecast but was $400. They canceled it because no one was going to buy it.
THis device has been a huge success and google could barley keep up with sales.

mine just came in the mail today and i ordered it on 7/25/13

I am also a tad disappointed....
4 weeks in and we have seen nothing as to new app's.
With these things selling like hotcakes and being sold out everywhere, I would have thought that we would have seen something by now.
If Netflix and Google tv/movies work, what could possibly be holding up the likes of Hulu/HBO/Showtime etc?

I think they knew Netflix had to work in order to sell it. By only having to deal with one partner, they can work with them to modify the SDK pretty easily. The whole thing seems to be a beta test at this point. Once they feel it is ready, they will push it out to everyone else.

The strategy may be to release it once more devices are in the pipeline. No need to anger those waiting to get theirs even more.

no not in total but the fact that google had to cancel the netflix offer in just a few hours or so means they sold well. Google even said it was "due to overwhelming demand."
Also the fact that places were running out of stock so fast means demand was higher than supply and if you know anything about economics you know that means its doing very well. (well because its something mass produced and intent on selling, i guess that rule wouldn't nessessarly count for some rare item)
heck some guy told me he bought 3 and sold them on craglist or something like that for like $75 each I think and he kept the netflix codes.
I can't believe you guys are already freaking out google is going to abandoned it before the final sdk is out.

Heck I went ahead and started searching with bing just in case!
Honestly at this point even if google, amazon and samsung all stopped supporting and using android it wouldn't die.
Android is pretty much here to stay for the foreseeable future.

Well I bet they are mass producing them now...its a no brainer at $35 and also at the perfect price of being an "impulse buy" my god its better than a droid 1 phone minus the screen amoung a few other things.

Buying nook off Craigslist

Ad says its running cm7. Anything I should look for or check to make sure I'm not getting screwed?
Sent from my Evo runnin Cm7 Windows Phone...
Don't pay extra because it has CM7 is on it. Installing CM7 is almost trivial now days. Going back to stock can be pain, not because it's difficult but because there are so many different tutorials and its confusing.
I would say skip it and buy one so you can hack it and learn. I wouldn't hesitate if the CM7 one is a good deal. You can pick up refurbed NCs for about $200 on line. If there is an issue with a refurb BN is pretty good about replacing it.
If it works good and looks good it should be fine. Read developers posts to set up the way you want. You can even put it back to stock if you want.
Someone smarter than I can probably give more details on this but I'm not sure it's a good idea to buy it with CM7 already installed. It might seem like a time saver but when I was playing with my girlfriends NC I wiped, cleared, did a bunch of stuff and when I went back to stock it would only let me register it with the ORIGINAL email and password. To put it another way, if they did not de-register the device before installing CM7 going back to stock will be (in my experience) a real pain in the neck since you have to have that original info to clear BN's opening screens and be able to attach the device to your email / account. There might be some simple way around this but I don't recall seeing it mentioned in the threads I've read. Personally I would rather buy one that is stock so I can just go in and click de-register and know it's done rather than have someone tell me it was and not know if they remembered things accurately. I'm sure a call to BN would eventually fix it but that's not much fun.
Thanks for the info.
Supposed to meet up tomorrow. Hope it goes smoothly. I been trying to find one for a while, but $250 is more than I can spend right now or I'd just get a brand new one.
Sent from my Evo runnin Cm7 Windows Phone...
I'll give you first hand why you should be wary of Craig's list with CM7.
Here's the 'scam' that's being run - these guys get a bad credit card or a bad check or whatever and buy the nook. Or maybe they just swipe one. As soon as B&N finds out, with a report from a store or from the stolen credit card, they blacklist the device. The actual device serial number is on the receipts, so they can do this.
Now, what that means is that you can't register the NC, no matter how hard you try. B&N won't unblacklist it, even if you're the "unknowing victim" here. If you're running CM7, no big deal. But if you want to run stock, you would have issues. And that's if you can live with having stolen merchandise.
After getting rooked like this, I just ask for the device serial number. If they're legit, they should have no problems giving it to you. Then just call up B&N and tell them you're buying a used Nook and you want to make sure that it's legit. They'll be able to tell you when and where it was purchased (by store #, but you can look that up) and whether it is blacklisted or not.
I had one someone was was selling one "New in the box" for $200. It was purchased in Atlanta on Friday and on Craig's list on Tuesday, 750 miles away. I don't think they realized what I would do with the serial number, but once I saw that, I knew it was a scam - why would anyone take a $50 loss on an unopened Nook 4 days after buying it?
Anyway, that's what to look for, be worried about, and how to allay your concerns, if you have any.
BTW make sure there's a sdcard. 2GB at least.

Not entirely sure what the challenges would be other than power connections, Market access and possibly wifi protocols. I've read in Canada Google Apps shows different apps than here in USA so that might be applicable there. Not sure. I would definately check the power/recharge specs though. I'm sure there are other more knowledgable on this than I here who can chime in.
As we are not concerned about connecting to a Network, i dont think there should be any other issue. We are on Android, so connecting to a Market should be something easy to overcome!

Watch out on ebay sometimes you will find devices from european sellers for fair pricing, buy from oversea and you maybe make no advantage of the better price due custom duty
There are none other problems, get an power adapter and that's it, yeah it's true some apps are only accessable on the market with US based IP adress.

talk about what you did with your device, new and upcoming gadgets, technology rumours, random dev/theme/mod stuff, your day at work, your new car, or even that barbershop you just got a haircut from.
want to ask a question or share a thought but don't think it needs its own thread? post it in here

I turned a hobby into a pretty decent job

I've been involved in cell phones since 1999 when I was selling them. This was back when there were bag phones you had to put together and you could really tinker with stuff. Then came digital and cell phones got much more boring. I still loved them and sold them until 2008.
I got into Android and really liked how much stuff I could mess with even though I had no idea what I was doing. I tried writing apps but I suck at code. I'm also color blind, so theming wasn't my thing. Then I got my Samsung Vibrant. The phone was both my best friend and worst enemy. The charging port went bad and since I was rooted, I didn't dare warranty it. So I took it apart to see what I could see. I ended up fixing it pretty easily. Then someone came up with a mod where you could install a front facing camera. I again took my phone apart and the install went great.
I finally found something I could do. Hardware.
I love tinkering and I also really like money, so I started doing screen replacements for friends. Now its kind of boomed and I'm doing 2-10 jobs while still working at my real job full time. Its a stress reliever for me to come home after a long boring day and get to tear something apart, fix it, then make it shiny and new again.
So that's my new hobby that just happens to pay pretty well. It also makes for some pretty cool pics

The interesting part is iPhones and iPods give me the most work. However I have never owned an iDevice and probably never will. They are also much cheaper to work on than Android phones.
If you don't mind me asking, how much do you charge for replacing digi/LCD on the iPhone 4/4S not counting parts?
And this reminds me, I need to start advertising again.

Ummmm no. Most of these computers are not super fast, so 40 minutes to install the OS, then find and install all of the drivers since XP and VISTA don't have a lot of them in Windows Update, then install all the software like antiVir, etc. Then when the client has photos he wants to save, and sometimes I've had to copy 100gb of files to my drive, then copy that back. THat's about 3-4 hours of work non-stop. And I need breaks to eat. Remember, most of these clients don't have top of the line computers like you do. They are in the dark when it comes to tech, and they would never know how to do the stuff themselves. But if you think that's too much, do it yourself, just don't ask any IT guy why your 'X'* isn't working after you reinstalled windows. I've had people think they can do it themselves, and that means more work for me then it would be in the first place since they ALWAYS mess something up. I charge them more then.
* X = whatever it is that's not working.
Whoa!! You just gave me a great idea. I should start a business of installing custom ROMs and themes for people and charge them some great cash. It's unethical but who cares. BTW it's great that you are doing something you like.
If i may ask, is this a part time job?

If you're asking me, I just do it from time to time for some extra cash.
And for ROMS/Rooting, they charge $25 around here.
But you have to remember, if you do that, you are their tech support, and whatever doesnt work good on the rom, it'll be your fault and you have to fix it, and they dont care the developer didn't get it to work yet.

I won't root/jail break/install software. Too many variables and too many follow up calls. I like one and done.
I have a full time job as well. I work in a call center for a large cable company taking disconnects.
The funny part is I applied at Apple to do over the phone tech support on iPhones but apparently I'm not qualified. However my friend who didn't even know how to reboot her iPhone did get that job. These companies crack me up.
I really wish there was a bigger market for color conversion. That's something I really want to do but no one wants to pay for it.

Interesting indeed. I think there's a lot of potential for cyanogen. But I don't think they should consider changing their name. Millions of people already know the name, I think it would be less consumer-friendly to change it.
CM
Personally I'll stay away from CM if they restructure their GPL's and don't keep it completely OSS.
If they stay FOSS i'll be very happy with what they are doing. I Just don't beleive that they'll keep it open.
But I would never buy the Oppo hardware that theyre going on.

agreed, oppo has a neat new device but not giving your users expandable memory and a removable battery is like shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to android. with the limitless possibilities of android and the unsecure nature of most cloud storage that was a really bad move on their part. if i wanted a iphone like device then ide just download ios and run it on my s4 lol

What a minute! You can run IOS on the S4? BS!
I've never seen/heard this. And that would be a big deal.
Also they can't do a removable battery because of the back touch panel, which is interesting to say the least, but probably not practical.

no bs my friend a simple google search will give you several options from a mock OS (not really dualbooting but similar) to plain jane launchers
as far as the removable storage/battery....i would rather have a sd card and a removable battery instead of a touch panel that may or may not cause issues with normal everyday use.

the program i was talking about is called iosonandroid and its about the closest thing you can get to actual ios. its a mock version of the os that requires a pc to install and from what i have seen and heard its pretty darn close to the real thing. i dont know why you would want to do it but hey its there for those that like dumb down their phones.

IOSONANDROID is a FAKE SITE.
There is no way to make IOS run on android Hardware.

i did research the site a little further and found its an offer site so you were correct about that but that does not negate the fact that it is possible to run IOS's earlier versions on our devices. do you honestly think that we would let IOS get away with being able to run android and not turn around and do the same? again.....why would you want to though?

Please show us some concrete evidence of this. In 4 years of rooting/romming Android devices, I've never seen this done. IOS is a closed-source OS and there's no way that I'm aware of to obtain a legal copy of the software for use on a non-iOS device, older version or not.

I'm pretty sure he's thinking of something else (maybe a theme or launcher) that he saw years ago and remembered incorrectly. IOS is not able to adapt to different screen resolutions like Android is, so even if it were somehow possible to get ahold of a copy of the OS (illegally), it wouldn't run on any of our devices because they all have unsupported resolutions for the OS. I call either shenanigans or inaccurate memory.

That's coincidental, not irony.... But if Alanis Morissette got it wrong, you can't blame others for doing same.
Besides use Tapatalk instead. It actually works better on the iPhone 6+ than Note 4 (you see more content/posts on it).
I have both the 6+ & Note 4 (and a moto x 2014) and contrary to popular belief the two can co-exist very happily - both great phones. My app usage is near identical between them too.
Both have great screens and great battery life. And after 5 months use, neither my Note 4 has a gap gate issue or iPhone 6+ bend gate issue....
I don't understand why some in android or apple communities get so insecure about these things. Just enjoy whatever device you are using.
That being said I'm not sure why your post is entirely relevant here and will inevitably stir up a hornets nest.
I must admit I have thought about it while sitting here waiting for lollipop. Considered the Nexus 6 as well, but at the end of the day this Note can do things that none of the competition can. The pen mostly but the removable battery and sd card are also nice. 6+ would be ok if I got the 128gb version but here in New Zealand a 32gb Nexus 6 costs the same as a note 4 so it's a total no brainer, lollipop or not.

why? Just interested...
I actually had the same thought, because I admire the beauty of the iPhone. But after taking a look I realized that they wanted me to pay extra cash for the exchange which is ridiculous since they get a better phone from me then I get from them.. But I might trade phones, just to try out the 6+ someday..
Im waiting for "IPhone 17 plus +" until then I stick with Note series.

I actually think it's not a bad idea at all. I've been with Andorid since the start and never had an Iphone, but there's tons of apps that have better support on iOS/apps that are not on Android at all. anyway..why not change once in awhile and try new things right? maybe i'll do it with my next phone
I made complete research, and just for change of taste, i went to buy an iphone 6+, got it booked here in Pakistan. but ended up buying a Note 4, and my first 2-3 days were of full depression because of battery drains but now its all fine. the only regret i have is the sound quality i was having with htc one m8 before, otherwise note4 is soooo awesome <3
After just one day with it, I quite content with it. Seems to be pretty solid...so far.

The fact that you can't use NFC (no secure token such as yubikey) for anything other than ApplePay, or that you can't use openvpn or PGP on an iPhone makes it an unsuitable/undesirable device for me. I hate how you can only run software endorsed by Apple on a device you paid for.

Agree but that's how they maintain the pubic perception that their platform is stable, secure and reliable. In reality it's no better that a high end Android these days, it's just that it's much easier for Android users to completely bork their phone by installing badly built apps.
Also iOS is easier to develop for, so long as you're compatible with the latest iOS you don't really need to worry about much else. Android is completely different. People could be running your app on anything from gingerbread to lollipop, have from a 1ghz single core cpu to a quad/octa core monster, 512mb to 3gb ram, 600x800 up to 1440x2560 screen res, etc etc.
In other words I couldn't give a **** for iOS, but the app ecosystem is kind of tempting.

So much of this. I have both the devices too, along with a nexus 6 and i really don't understand the hate on both sides. Plus as others have already said the topic is irrelevant on this forum. There is such a thing as discretion of posting.
That said to the OP, iPhone 6 plus is a fine device. Enjoy the great apps, a great consistent camera and great battery life.

Can you elaborate on this? While your statement holds partial truth, it was also ironic that I tried to download a well-known android app on my iPhone. Never, EVER make me feel like I wasted money on an education again!
