This question is directed to those who have taken apart their Kaiser, and specifically screen the screen assembly. I've got water issues and the screen is broke now. Here's the story. I might get some outrageous warranty charges.
I installed the InvisiShield (www.shieldzone.com) on my phone. Essentially it's a screen protector that is indestructible. It practically is, but unfortunately it destroyed my phone. To install it you have to spray this liquid on the back of the 'shield' and apply it to your phone, using a squeegee to get the bubbles out. It went pretty well, and I was happy with the results, but 3 days later my screen stopped working.
Everything is washed out, and it looks like water got inside the LCD somehow. For instance, colors streak across the LCD in fonts, etc.
I called ATT and they are mailing a replacement, and I'll be expected to send this phone back. They said if the return phone has damage that would void warranty (water damage, etc) I'll be prorated $400 on my next bill.
Over the phone the customer representative had me remove the battery and check one of the water damage pads to make sure it was white. It is.
For those who have seen internal phone assembly, is there any of these directly by the screen that will pick up moisture?
As far as ATT knows, the phone LCD suddenly stopped working. I'll get a replacement and /hopefully/ theres not a moisture pad right next to the LCD assembly. Anyone know?

I dont know but man I hope that there isn't. Have you tried contacting invisishield? Never mind, b/c they'll blame you. Most applicators like that use alcohol to evaporate the remaining moisture that's left. My friend applied it to his, and he used very little liquid(scared), so GOOD LUCK!! I MEAN IT
Tough break, sounds dangerous to pour liquid on the screen though !
On a related matter has anyone seen pics of a Kaiser pulled apart ? Still wondering where the GPS antenna is located !
Yeah, I hope I don't get shafted.
I love the invisibleshield, and I put one on my $1,500 DSLR camera screen, but since the Kaiser screen is recessed a bit, when you squeegee the solution out from under the screen, it cannot be wiped away. It just gets pushed out between the phone's body bezel, and the screen glass -- right in to the phone. With my DSLR camera, the screen is flush with the body, so when squeegee'd I could quickly wipe the water/alcohol away.
Contacting Invisibleshield got me:
Our liability does not extend beyond our product. The lifetime warranty only covers the replacement of the invisibleSHIELD and NOT a warranty for the device the shield is protecting.

If ATT charges me the $400 if they find out, I guess I'll pay it. It's my fault, but by extension of invisibleshield. Guess I'll learn not to use that product on anything that has a recessed screen. I was thinking of buying an invisible shield for my laptop as well, but it's screen is slightly recessed like the kaiser, so you can forget me doing that!

That was why I bought the 'best screen shield on the market' for scratches (invisibleshield). Coincidentally that was the demise of my phone. I also purchased a steel case that basically would let me sit on my phone (uncomfortably) if i wanted. The desire to protect my phone, did the opposite in my case.

Wondering if you remove the battery and not using for a few days until the water dries out before turning it on?

Could be, zcink. The replacement phone is on it's way. I can remove the battery during this time it takes for the replacement to come and see what happens. Unfortunately, I think one of the following has happened:
1) Water seeped between the LCD protetcive glass, and the LCD itself, and somehow soaked in to the LCD causing mini shorts -- thus resulting in kludged text.
2) Water seeped to the phone's connecting cable where the screen input is, dried on the wires, thus creating a short -- destroying the signal.
Either way, when the liquid dry's, the mineral deposits causing the short will still exist, still causing a short. For both, repair requires disassembly, voiding my warranty. I could buy a new replacement screen from the China place for about $100, but if ATT /might/ replace it without screwing me, I'll take the chance. Just wanted to know what my chances /were/ them finding out it's got water in it.
I guess the moral is.
Don't buy from InvisibleShield, unless you use a SPARING amount of spray they they include. They include a huge bottle, and I used 2 sprays worth applied to my shield. This created enough excess to be squeegeed right into my phones body. The phone worked great for a few days, until one day at work, while I was using it -- BAM -- the screen was dead.
There isn't the water dectector there, but I'm pretty sure the technicians would notice the damaged screen.
I know those screen protectors, used them for alot of things. Using one right now actully. Its the one you wash with soap and warm water, and just let it dry, it have a static adhesive to the the scree.
I see. yeah hopefully the ATT tech will be lazy and just grant you the warranty without investigating. just play dumb. If they charge you the $400 call them up and threaten to switch to T-Mobile.
My phone died and T-Mobile was going to do nothing until I threatened to switch to ATT, then they replaced it.
I seriously doubt that they will be able to tell unless you really soaked it, next time use a dry screen protector, they work just fine, no bubbles. The only moisture sensor is on the battery, and if it was a tiny amount of moisture, there's likely no signs in the screen assembly. AT&T isn't likely going to dissect the screen to check.

It appears to me that the screen itself is it's own modular unit. Meaning, after phone disassembly, you'd have to disassemble the actual screen itself. Further, there is no moisture indicators directly by the assembly it seems.
Knock on wood, but I'd hope a tech wouldn't go that far to determine the fault of the phone. I assume they would if theres telltale signs of water damage to the display (streaking might be a common sign.) But, maybe, just maybe, they won't.

The service manual shows 4 of them, one under the battery that can be seen from the outside, one at the top and one at the bottom of the mainboard's other side, and.. one on the board that holds the bottom front panel switches, so very close to the LCD.
Personally I wouldn't have asked for a replacement phone, I'd have disassembled the phone and tried to clean it if made dirty by the liquid, bought a spare screen off ebay if it was definitely dead, and if ultimately it didn't work bought another phone off ebay for less than $400. But maybe I like risk

Keyboard membrane removal.
So, I've had trouble with my keyboard lately and wanted to just clean off the contacts on the membrane...but I can't seem to get the damned thing out of the plastic keyboard Middle Housing.
I have gotten everything apart so the housing is separated. Verified that I did it the way the service manual says...but i saw NOTHING about how to disassemble the keyboard from the housing.

Hello all, while drunk at the beach this weekend I accidentally went into the water with my Touch Diamond in my pocket... stupid... I know, did I mention I was drunk? Anyways, the current issue at hand is what to do with my screwed up cell phone.
I took the backing, battery and SIM card out of the phone and let it dry out as much as I could since the weekend. When I turned it on this morning, the "smart mobility" text appears for a few seconds, but the phone shuts off shortly after that. Do batteries usually break from water damage, as well?
If anyone has any advice for me I would greatly appreciate it. Does anyone know of a legit place that can repair this? Is there anything I can do to try and remedy this problem? Or would you recommend I just sell/ditch this one and get a new phone? Thanks a lot.
Have you tried charging the battery? that might explain it only booting for a second, the other explanation is that it's fried the ROM chips and only the bootloader works.

Disassemble your Diamond completely (manual floating around somewhere in this forum), clean all pieces using one of these isopropanol-brush-thingies, reassemble, turn it on - and pray. Any year - a new battery might be a good idea. No promises on anything of that though. The diamond is a very integrated piece of technology and you might have short-circuited something on one of the PCBs really. No guarantee that everything will work as usual even if the device comes up as well.
Warranty seems to be out of the question - I guess virtually any repair center will notice residue of loads of salt water on the first look inside...

Strip it down Salt water is very and I mean very corrosive ! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing this . Waranty repair will be expensive.
Clean with an alchol based cleaner as advised but you must ensure you get all the salt out. To see it boot means that the screen has survived ( Amazed by this ) .
Best of luck , oh and if it does not work are you insured for accidental damage on personal items on your household insurance. This could be the next route
I have the same problem with my Tytn 2. It got wet during the "Oranje" Party in Basel, when the firemen were "cooling" down the fans...
It boots..but as soon as it has booted, you here a lot of "bling..bling..bling.." and it shuts down.. the batterie doesn't charge..
You recommend to open and clean it with alcool? Actually I'm not sure if it was washed by the firemen or by my own alcool .ehhehe..
I have a Diamond now, but if I get it back to work, I would sell it on ebay.

There is a watersensor inside the diamond. They'll notice that the device has been in the water.

Luckily I was at lake Michigan in Chicago (fresh water), for whatever that's worth, so I'm not really worried about salt corroding anything away. I bought it off eBay unlocked, I did buy insurance but, naturally, I'm pretty sure that this water damage won't be covered.
Sounds like taking it apart and cleaning it might be my best bet. Do you guys think that any cell phone repair place would be able to help me out? Anyone know of a good cell phone repair shop (in the U.S.)? Thanks for the help thus far guys, I really appreciate it
Firstly remove the battery and SIM, please do not try to power up or charge again as you might have already damaged it beyond repair.
Isopropanol or IPA is what you need (100% Alcohol), you can get this from your local chemist for about £5 a bottle.
You need to strip your phone down completely and use an anti static PCB brush to clean the whole lot (Buy it from Maplin), submerge it in a plate of IPA (excluding the screen) while cleaning. As for the warranty sticker remove this by first heating with a hair drier, then uing a Stanley knife point to remove it.
Once it’s all been cleaned and dried in air, re-assemble and power up. If it fails to work take it back for a warranty replacement. As the warranty sticker is intact, and all the evidence of water damage will have been removed, they should replace it for you without a problem.

Pretty sure? I would check if I was you before doing anything else with it. If insurance doesnt cover water damage, what does it cover? Phone insurance is so expensive i thought they covered everything like theft and accidental damage, I thought the idea was a warranty wont cover you if you break the phone but insurance will.
I'm thinking it may be an idea to check before you do anything else so they dont say "Well we cover water damage, but now youve taken apart the phone we cant cover you"

My warranty does not cover accidental water damage, that is for sure.
I charged the battery up over the weekend and tried turning it back on, and, to my utter amazement, the phone completely powered on. I got to all of my menus and was able to use all of the programs that I opened, even the WiFi worked.
However, the functionality of the touch screen is quite screwed up. I don't know if its shorting out or what but there are basically "ghost taps" and other unintentional actions happening all the time. For example, if I were to just leave it at the home screen it would eventually scroll to another menu, open the start pull-down menu, automatically open the calendar and start doing random ****, etc.
Does anyone know how to fix the touch screen or have any ideas on how to replace one? I have a faint hope that this thing might not be beyond saving.. thanks a lot people

Maybe try to re-calibrate the touch screen?
Don't give up hope, sometimes these things can take days, even weeks to fully dry and become functional. My mom had a sony ericsson somethingorother that she loved, dropped in the tub, didn't work for like a month or more... She'd check it every week or so to see, and slowly the features started coming back... Little by little, more and more buttons would respond (without activating 2 or 3 at a time). Well, long story short (too late?) works 100% now. I don't think water damage is a reparable occurrence, but DON'T sell your Diamond for parts or anything like that, keep it around and check back periodically. Best of luck.

If it goes RED it shows HTC that the Phone/Battery went into the water.
This allows HTC to avoid repair "sunk" phones

Should also be one on the phone... If not, there's your solution. New battery + deny any water damage = Free replacement.

Haha you're all over it... Yeah, I had a feeling they'd have something in the phone, they'd never make it THAT easy.
This phone is not truly waterproof/resistant!!!!!
First off I want to start this off buy saying a few things. I work for AT&T so before anyone says its from improper usage remember I had to watch training videos on how to properly use it. Also, before anyone says well, you aren't really supposed to be using it in the water, you are wrong. The first thing we are trained on is how to properly close the back cover and how to show the customers Aqua mode to take pictures underwater. We actively use this as a main selling point, this is per Samsung.
Here is my story. I bought the Active on Thursday. The first thing I did with it was ensure the back was closed and made a video in my fish tank so I could show customers how it works underwater, and how good aqua mode is. That worked out perfectly except the video was a little dark, so I figured I would retake it.
In this time I had a customer swap out the phone they bought because it were defective, the bottom buttons stopped working on it. She was very vague when the water question came up but I thought nothing of it.
Now cue today. It was sunny outside so I thought it was the perfect time to reshoot the fish tank video. I ensured the back was secure, yes, including pressing down on the back where the AT&T logo is. I then submerged the phone in the tank while taking the video. Almost instantly the phone screen went black and said dock mode was enabled so I took the phone out of the water and everything went back to normal. I double checked the USB rubber to be sure. I just chalked it up to the phone doing crazy things in the water. I have read almost everywhere that the phone will say headphones are plugged in, etc. So I thought this was normal. I then put it back in and took a minute long video. Everything was fine. I even played back the video and it was fully working.
This is where everything went wrong. About 2 minutes later the phone started tweaking out, Google now opened on its own and the buttons were really sensitive. Then the buttons completely stopped working other than the power button and that's when I freaked out. I opened the battery cover and there it was, everything was soaked. but luckily none of the water damage indicators were colored. I then opened the USB door and it was like a fountain, so that's where the breach happened. The flimsy, rubber USB door. I did not tell a soul what happened and went back to work and swapped it for a regular Galaxy S4.
So please listen to my warning. There are way too many people getting this phone damaged, including me, a fully trained AT&T employee who took the proper precautions before doing anything.
Samsung should not be able to get away with calling this phone water resistant or water proof, and they should especially not include an Aqua Camera mode.
Also the warranty DOES NOT, I REPEAT, DOES NOT COVER WATER!!!!
I think it depends really, i understand where you are coming from, and you shouldnt trust it, but my friend was pushed in the pool with his and it survived without a issue
I've kept mine in my pocket and went for a swim in the pool. Worked fine after wiping it with a towel. You might have had a defective unit...

I've read all the horror stories relating to the S4A, and there's been a few of them.. Is the fact that the device seems to fail often enough of a reason to exchange for a regular S4? I'm not within my 14 days anymore :/.I opted for this over S4 just because of the water resistance.

And I understand that I may have a defective unit, but I have read 3 separate reviews where the reviewer damaged their first phone. There is also a thread on XDA where a bunch of people state that they damaged their phone. This in itself either says that the phone doesn't work as advertised or there are way too many defective units out there for anyone to be safe to try the water and Samsung needs to know this.

Maybe its the other way around and my friend got a defective one thats actually waterproof

Eh... I like the buttons...
The bottom line is that Samsung doesn't warranty the phone against water damage and therefor should Never sell it as such. If they can not stand behind an advertised function of their own product, they should not sell it. It doesn't matter if people abuse the phone in water or exceed the recommended specs (depth and length of time in water) because there is no way they can differentiate between people that stay within the specs and those that don't.
All I gotta say is the best way to get away with saying it is water resistance/proof would be making it like the Nexus 4 and no removable back. Make it wireless charging. Come with a wireless charger. Sd card slot and sim slot on the top or sides. Make it completely blocked off with no ports but a headphone hack the way they did making it water proof. That's the only way they can be certain its water resistant. Otherwise you have these issues.

Yeah, I have a feeling all of these water-related failures are going to kill the S4A early. Eventually, the threat of a class action lawsuit will cause them to trigger an EOL.
I suspect this will happen sooner rather than later, since showing it dunked in water in all the commercials, but not covering water damage is just screaming "class action."
My crystal ball says that within a year, you'll see AT&T (at least) offering to waive ETF for owners of S4A units damaged by water. This may be under the terms of a Class Action, or to avoid one... but in the end, that will probably be the end of the S4A story.

A simple solution to find out if your phone is waterproof... Turn the phone off and remove the battery, then close everything and put it in water for a few minutes. Take the phone out of the water and check to see if water got in the charging port and/or past the seal on the back. If it did get water in the device put your phone in rice for a day and return it for a working unit. If you didn't you should be fine.
If no power is going to your device it cannot short circuit. After the water is gone you can turn it on with no issues

as an owner of Galaxy S2, S3, Nexus and HTC One i have to say then Samsung products are inferior to any other manufacture,

Remember, most people with this phone have entered into a 2-year contract. Simply recalling the phone wouldn't work. They'd either have to replace it with an equivalent model or waive the ETF. The problem with the former is that they've advertised the heck out of its water resistance, selling it as "everything proof." If they were to, say, replace it with a standard S4, the consumer would have a very real argument that it's not an equivalent model, which would be ANOTHER basis for a class action.
Also, remember, recalls are done by a manufacturer. AT&T isn't going to recall a Samsung device. Samsung would have to do that. A recall would only really work if Samsung offered another phone (like an S4), AND made a deal with AT&T, compensating them to waive the ETF if the consumer didn't want that phone. This may happen, but before it does, the remaining stock would be pulled from the shelves, and the phone would be EOL.
Again, I think that marketing this phone as waterproof, but not standing behind that marketing, is eventually going to lead to a class action. A class action, or the threat of one, will result in an early death for this device. I agree with what was said before though... Yeah... saying a phone is "everything proof" and water proof is pretty stupid.. Honestly I think AT&T and Samsung could fix this in my mind just by warranty replacing water damaged S4 Actives. If they replace them in the event of water damage then we all will be happy. It doesn't happen to every unit, most users are fine in the water, but still a high percentage.
I for one love my active and the water proof was just a bonus, but I wouldn't mind them giving me my upgrade back

I have managed to somehow dent the micro sim cap/door, does the device need dis-assembly to replace?
I have found a place that stocks genuine parts, however after contacting Sony service center they want me to send the device away interstate, which seems ridiculous. Sony stated though "in order to keep waterproof integrity it is necessary to get the job done by technician".
Any thoughts or tips on replacing the door, is it just a matter of squeezing the rubbery ball through a slot(no pun intended)or is it more involved?

I know, however, I dont want to send it away, the last time I sent away brand new device it returned to me with scratches and was obviously mishandled . We have quite a few Sony stores but none will deal directly with repairs, perhaps I have to make warranty claim. I have babied this device I dont even use it with sim card yet, it is my mp3 player only at night after work.
I can just see them charging me heaps for doing f-all more than swapping out a simple part. Surely this can be done without dis-assembly?
I dropped mine a couple of weeks ago, it landed on the micro sim flap as well and the dent was pretty bad.
It was, if I remember correctly, the xperia z ports could be pulled out and the replacement pushed back in. I've not see a breakdown of the z1 yet so I may be totally wrong this time around.
no the Z1 needsw to be pulled apart, I work at a mobile shop, the Xperias Z1 is a hell mission to pull apart, the flaps on the Z1, will break if you put them in without opening it

I just removed and replaced the door without disassembley it comes out very easily and goes back in very easily, problem solved. Save me $100 since shipping device is $20 and door replacement by tech is $80, what a rip off!

To be honest my cover for the usb broke off It would fit firm when I would place it back I still used it under water my problem was it wasn't attached and in between charging I had to put the flap in my pocket and yes lost it lol

Theres a few places, here and here also.
I agree with letting the sony technicians handle it... Sure you could just easily swap the caps but the official technicians should pressure test it first for waterproofness before sending it back to you...
My daughter pulled on e of mine off the other day, it just pops back in very easily and the way it goes in means there is no need for a pressure test. The bit that keeps it attached to the device has nothing to do with the waterproofing.

You say it pops in easily, is it that simple Greg. Not ordered mine yet. In hospital for a few days, probably do it in next day or two.
With the ends of the port that slot into the z1, has a triangle shapped lip, is it tough, malleable and pushes in easily?

true, but don't we take those parts off every day when plugging in the charger/removing SD card etc, and don't we put them back fine ourselves....
My USB cover isn't sitting flush anymore, does anyone know of a UK supplier for a replacement flap? Anyone else who's flaps are no longer flush?!!

Please! send device away for way over $100(for a $2 part!) where it will be most likely be sent back with scratches, mishandled by technicians, couriers and/or postal services at no less than a large shipping and handling premium (if you dont want to risk damage, ie insurances etc)
So you're looking at around $40 insured postage, $80 for repair plus another $40 return insured postage. I doubt theres any tests in terms of water, nitro or any other! There is no pressure test nor is there any evacuation test, its impossible!
The housing and port door components are mass produced by automated computer based programs that dont leave any room for error. There is certainly no testing in terms of pressure on the mass produced market devices, only the initial prototypes are tested and perfected then sent to production.
No issues with my replacement parts, Ive showered and washed down the device many times.
Glad that it's the case then! My only worries is if we buy it from 3rd party stores it isn't OEM(as I'm pretty sure sony wouldn't sell any parts of it's phone for retail) and it's not the same machine used by sony and there could be miscalculations or errors

I will not do that! I saw screen light when I pull out my sd and usb cover caps and I am sure if the doors are open you will damage you phone. Fore sure the caps doors make the phone waterproof.

Absolutely no need to remove the back housing, I can confirm the doors/caps pop out so easily and go back in just as easily with no issues, I have taken mine under water at least 20 times since replacing microSIM door. I purchased my replacement from Part4repair.com and it looks and functions just as the original did. The parts are tested prior to shipping. If you waste $100+ for a simple door/cap replacement then you're being robbed blind!
My very late, in rush butt started running without realizing that my phone fell out. I got the phone back from a stranger after multiple attempts to unlock my phone and keep it. Anyways, my friends and I, we came to conclusion that my phone was ran over by a car, face down on the asphalt. Tech21 screen protector on it has multiple holes and dents from the surface of the asphalt. Luckily enough, everything is fine but the screen, of course. It cracked every where. Every tallest bumps of the road left a crack on the screen. I can barely read but actual screen is FINE. THANK GOD!!
SOOO end of story. I ordered repair kit on eBay but I was wondering if anyone went through changing the glass on Note 4 yet? am i the first one?? T.T
Edit: it's my first time replacing the glass but I've dealt with similar stuff before. If anyone would like a video of it, I could try to record it. If I crack my screen, people could cry with me or laugh at me.

It would work better if you had the machine to separate the glass from the screen. I will say if the screen is badly cracked up you might have a really low success rate.
why not just buy a whole screen? they are under $200 the last time i checked on ebay. less risk and less headache.
you can even try just the glass after you replace the screen just to do it and if it works you have a back up, if not no loss.
i have a machine and hardly use it cuz how bad people break their screens today, whole screen is the safe bet.
i don't know if its the same in your area but most places charge $100-150 to replace the glass and most places don't reapply new adhesive to the digitizer and glass . so the glass is being held onto the phone by the frame only.

Like your signature says, it's a badass Note 4. I've been handling android phones since MotoDroid and I can guarantee you that there's no internal damage to Note 4. Im still a flashaholic and my phones battery life and performance hasn't been effected at all. Yay me

I agree completely. I dropped the phone on the road while riding and except the top right corner crack on screen there is no damage. Somewhat surprising because i must be atleast 30 mph and the force with which it fell, should have broken into pieces. Not even the back cover came off the phone.

My screen cracked while snowboarding and Repairs Universe offers a new glass/digitizer assembly for $189. I contacted Samsung and they offered to repair it for $197.77, so for an additional $8 someone will do it for you. The only downside is you'll be without a phone for about 1.5-2 weeks.
I was worried about the stuff from Repairs Universe being genuine Samsung parts (wanna make sure I get a real 1440p screen and not Chinese knock off crap that's only 720p), so I contacted them. They assured me that it is a genuine Samsung screen, but they could have been lying to me just to get a sale. For that extra $8 I'll get genuine Samsung parts and it'll be getting done properly by someone that know what they're doing.
So for anyone that needs a new screen those are two options for you.

I went to their website on my phone, clicked on contact us, and did a live chat with one of their customer service people. It'll ask you to choose which product you're contacting them about (phones, TVs, appliances, etc) then what kind of phone. They'll ask for your IMEI number and all that jazz. I found them to be quite polite and helpful.
The only down side is you'll be without a phone for about 2 weeks, so make sure you have a backup phone to use or prepare yourself for terriblewithdrawal from not having your Note...

Yes, that's the price they charge. I was letting everyone know that these are the guys that Samsung uses. They use genuine OEM parts and are the only repair center in the United States authorized to do Samsung repairs. If you look earlier in the thread, someone said that Samsung charges $197.77 with a 1.5-2 week turn around. As you just said yourself, this method would be $5 cheaper and 2x faster than going through Samsung to get the same place to repair your phone. Just was putting it out there if someone wanted 100% assurance that they were getting genuine OEM parts but didn't want to wait 1.5-2 weeks that Samsung quoted them.

Yup same reason I haven't cancelled the tmo 'jump' subscription. You do have to factor in the $10 per month subscription price though, so if you break your phone in 10 months, it's $275.
T-Mobile insurance to replace phone is $175 I just filed a claim on Saturday and got a new phone not refurbished today. The only problem is I had a Note 4 in White but they sent Gray since White was not in stock. I called T-Mobile and complained and got a $30 credit applied to my account so I really just paid $145
