Q about rooting if its possible - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.im planning to buy htc one which i dont want to use with stock rom,so if i get the phone with hboot1,54 would i be able to root phone, install custom recovery and flash roms, kernels? Or i need s off for all this stuff? As i read someware on xda that both rooting methods for htc one are not working with a hboot 1.54 thanx in advance

you can Root, install custom recovery and flash roms
S-Off means you can install RUU from different country, regardless of the Carrier and Region
you dont even need S-Off if you want to Root, Recovery, and flash ROMs

Aha, so 100% i can root phone with both metods methods? Revone and forgot the name of second one?

Those are not rooting methods but s-off methods.
No root exploit is needed for this phone. Just unlock via htcdev, flash custom recovery, flash rooted rom.

Best Way To Root Incredible S?

Ok, so i have the Incredible S. I Unlocked its bootloader using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105 but i had to relock it to send it for warranty. When i get it back, i will unlock it again, nut because the phone was on hboot 1.16, i had to flash the boot.img each time i installed a new rom. But, if i use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1373697 (which, by the wayy, is how i put my phone's bootloader to stock) will i be able to use the CWM app to install/update roms?
If not, is there a better way to root the phone?
Also, could anyone explain how custom radios and kernels are better than stock?
Thanks

Yes if you use the downgrade tool to get hboot 1.13 and use Revolutionary to S-Off then you will be able to use CWM to flash custom ROMs.
There is no such thing as a custom radio, but each time HTC upgrades a ROM, the RUU may contain a new radio which has improvements.

[Q] what is s-off

Getting ready to root my phone and flash a Rom in the couple of days...just wanna be sure I know everything before I go for it...this is my second android...my first being the infuse which did not require bootloader to be unlocked or this s off thing....
I'm just curious what s off does for the phone...Im pretty sure the unlocked bootloader just allows the phone to boot unsigned roms and stuff (correct me if I'm wrong) but I've never heard of s off...what is it ...what does it do?
Once I get more comfortable with this phone...I may begin to develop for it...
Thanks for any help with my question...any and all information you may think is useful is also appreciated...anything...I'm brand new to this phone and to HTC/sense

S-off is security off. It allows you to write to partitions you aren't able to write to with just an unlocked bootloader. This was important for users who didn't get an official ICS update from their carrier. Without an official update, they didn't have an ICS HBoot and couldn't run ICS ROMs. With s-off, you can flash custom/unsigned HBoot so ICS is available for those users. That's s-off's main purpose for this device, but has a bunch of other uses. However, s-off is not necessary unless you want ICS and don't have an official update from your carrier. You can also flash radios, splash screens, boot.img from recovery, etc, etc

No. To flash a custom recovery all you need is an unlocked bootloader. Recovery is one of the partitions you can fastboot flash without s-off or an eng bootloader

I see you have ATT, which means you have a Vivid, so S-Off is NOT necessary for flashing ROMs. If the Vivid came with ICS, you're all set to unlock bootloader, flash custom recovery, flash boot.img, and flash ROM. If your Vivid currently has GB, you'll want to run an ICS RUU first (relock bootloader first if it is currently unlocked), then unlock, etc
s-off necesary for kernel?

Not necessary but makes it easier. There are other options: (boot.img is usually found in the rom zip file.)
1. Fastboot boot recovery.img - command from terminal/CMD
2. Fastboot flash boot boot.img - command from terminal/CMD
3. Flashimage GUI (app is in Themes and Apps section)
Any of these options will work.

Phone replaced, came w/ 1.54 Bootloader & 2.24.401 OS-Version How restore Backups?
Hey,
I am pretty frustrated right now
I had to get my HTC One replaced and got a Version in return that obviously has the 1.54.0000 Bootloader and the OS-Version is 2.24.401.1.
For years I am using TitaniumBackup and regular nandroid backups as my backup routine.
That's what I did before I sent the phone in, due to an hardware issue.
I don't want to unlock using htcdev, I see no point.
An as I can tell right now there seems to be no option to unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and root with one of the other methods, such as revone or moonshine.
Okay, I can probably wait a bit and hope for an Exploit...
But how can I restore the app data of my daily driver apps from either the TitaniumBackup or the nandroid, without root in the meantime.
To be honest...not having root is the worst.
Is there any option that I missed?
Thanks
You can root but you can't do s-off
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I wouldn't care much about S-OFF (don't want to change my CID or anything), but with my bootloader locked, I can't flash a custom recovery and by that I can't flash root.
Well then it seems like there is indeed a point to unlocking the bootloader
You're only options are to wait or to use htcdev.

Is there no option to temporarily root? (That I maybe lose after reboot?)
Just to at least restore backups of my daily driver apps?
There is indeed a way to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery. Go look for the many toolkits in the htc one dev sections and you'll be able to do what you're looking for with not too much trouble.

Well then, i'll have to agree with everyone else. You'll have to unlock the bootloader via htcdev in order to install a custom recovery. That should be point enough in order for you to do so if you would like a custom recovery. Not like there are any disadvantages to having S-OFF.

*sigh...I guess it's late (Don't get me wrong...I totally appreciate that you take the time to help, but it's just slightly off topic :angel
I would do that without hesitation if I could, as described above
there is not yet an exploit (nothing else do revone and moonshine use) that allows to unlock the bootloader with HBOOT 1.54.0000, which came with the latest updated, which obviously no gets shipped with replacement devices as well...
So yeah...I am actually at this point where I decided to stock with the Stock-Sense Rom and just wait, but still I need some way to restore my apps. At least conversations, logs, stats etc. from certain ones from my previous backups.
But I couldn't find any option to root it temporarily.
Can't you downgrade using the same method done to go back to stock and then do s-off?

You can flash via fastboot?
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4
Do you mean the custom recovery? If so, then I can't, as this "modification" is blocked by the bootloader.
Or do you mean the stock image with another bootloader?
To be honest, I don't know. And couldn't find something about "downgrading" to HBOOT 1.44.000 :/
Fastboot can be accessed via computer and having your phone in bootloader mode and clicking fastboot. I'm thinking that installing a custom recovery would be blocked, but maybe you should be able to install another rom that has root? I'm just throwing ideas. I haven't encountered this problem. I do know that you can't s-off with 1.54 though.
Hehe yeah...it's blocked in fastboot
i've never heard of flashing roms via fastboot...doesn't it "only" have access to the bootloader and the recovery?
So I guess you'll need s-off to downgrade the hboot.
You need s-off to downgrade.
You need a custom recovery to root.
You need an unlocked bootloader to flash a custom recovery.
The ONLY way to unlock 1.54 is htcdev.

I once used "AppExtractor", but it requires root as well.

I appreciate the sarcasm. And the answer is no, which is what I was trying to tell you. The apps require root because to do what you're trying to do you need root access. Nandroid backups are specific to custom recoveries, and even if you pulled the files from the nandroid, you couldn't push them to the rom because you'd need a root explorer.

Okay...flashing recovery obviously is possible from fastboot.

By that:
--> Recovery --> Root with S-ON?
What are the potential risks or problems that one might run into using this method?
i will lose the stock recovery
if something goes wrong and i want to revert back to the stock image, flashing of the update.zip via fastboot to do so, will be blocked, due to S-ON (and of course the current version's image is not yet available)
hmmm....

[Q] Thinking about getting one but have just 1 question

As subject line states, I'm thinking about getting an htc one but I have a concern. I swore off htc devices b/c they can be such a ***** to open up for custom roms. For example, when I had the htc evo 4g (2012 flagship) I had to root, then install custom recovery, then obtain s-off. I'm just wondering if this device is the same. Is all u need root, then custom recovery? Or, do u need s-off too? If so, is it easy to do? If anyone could link me to a tutorial I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks!

What do u mean by basics? Can I flash ANY custom rom, radios, kernels, etc? Thanks for your help.
yes most roms and kernels are flash-able with a custom recovery like TWRP - S-off i think is only for modifying things like the bootloader. i just unlocked and installed TWRP and am running CM-10.2 nightlies just fine.

HTC one m7 hboot 1.61

Hello,
this is just to be sure.
My m7 is out of warranty so I want to try a different ROM.
Either viperone or revolution hd. (unless you guys suggest another one?)
I was reading that I need root to install a rom? is this correct?
also, to root i need to s-off? no? "you will not be able to root or flash a custom ROM unless your turn S-Off" - as in here.
I was trying to S-off with Sunshine from the root ninja... the phone PASSED the first test, but the second was an attemp to Temproot.. which it failed...
Am i doing anything wrong here? shouldn't the phone first be s-off to be able to be rooted?
Thank you!

You don't need root to install a custom rom, only an unlocked bootloader (+ a custom recovery to flash the rom). You'll often find false statements like this here and there simply because they're some ppl not really understanding the difference between Root/Unlocked bootloader/S-Off bootloader. And also because you're trying to get information from really outdated page like the one you've linked

You need root to use Sunshine but again you don't need S-OFF neither ROOT to flash a custom rom and BTW most custom roms are pre-rooted.
1-Unlock your bootloader
2-Flash the latest TWRP recovery
3-Flash your rom
What root does: Give your Super User access in the ROM
What an unlocked bootloader does: Disables signature verification and write protection for /recovery, /system /radio, /boot partitions so you can flash custom recovery, custom rom, radio, custom kernel.
What S-OFF does: Disables signature verification and write protection to all 37 partitions, gives you endless possibilities including turning your phone into a really expensive paper weight if you don't know what you're doing.
regrettably your answer doesn't help...unlock bootloader, unlock bootloader.....makes an incorrect assumption that the oem unlock is available.
It seems from 1.61 they have removed this option. at least it appears that Vodafone has joined Verizon in this case, and i assume for the others too.
i previously rebranded and s-off and foolishly restored to factory branding/etc and now decided i need to use the phone and am stuck with crap.
moral of the story.....never get one of these $1 phone deals and end up w
