[Q] Confused with SD Install of CM10 on Nook HD - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

:crying: My brain hurts.
I'm trying to figure out how to install CM10 onto an SD card so I can dual boot my nook HD, but each time I read the instructions I get lost in more and more threads to the extent I'm totally and utterly confused.
In the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063968 is
CM10 sdcard Installer (For CM10.1 installation additional step in the instructions should be followed)
Due to many problems/issues encountered by users with regards to adb and sdcard not working in Windows, I have combined the two files below and written a short script to automate the installation process. Just insert the sdcard to your device and it will be installed with CM10 automatically. No user intervention is needed.
Instructions
Download the compressed image file cm10-sdcard-installer.img. Posted: 12/28
Unpack and write the image to your sdcard. For more info on how to do it, see this post.
(optional) To install CM10.1 instead of CM10, replace 'CM-10-hummingbird.zip' of the SD card boot folder with any CM10.1 image file you can download here in this page (you need to rename the file exactly as above).
Insert into the device and boot (cold)/reboot (warm).
Wait for it to finish installation.
Enjoy your HD with CM10 (CM10.1)

which is simple, but does this "install" to the SD Card, or to the nook's internal? All the instructions I've read for making a dual boot say you need to install CM onto the SD card, which I understand, but how do I *know* I'm about to install to the SD card rather than overwrite the Nook?
Helllpppp!!

Two things tell you. First the CWM itself will say for SD and second, the name of the zip file says for SD.

Straight mod with no registration
Just bout a Nook HD from the pawn shop. Turn it on and it wants me to register. I have 2 Nook Colors. I registered them. rooted and added Cyanogenmod. Seems as I recall back that it was best to register them right away. I was just thinking, why? Why not just update it with no registration. Pros and cons please. Thank

The only advantage to registering a new nook is it starts your warranty. But since this is used from a pawn shop, it is probably registered to someone else and you can't register it anyway.

Hey, I have been looking for a beginner guide to root the nook hd. I am new to rooting so i really have no idea on what to do. I do have windows 8, so i don't know if that would be a problem. If any one knows how to root the nook hd and wants to help it might be easier to chat in Skype, and my Skype name is doodlebuy97. Thanks for your help!!!
P.S. I have looked up guides, but most of them are advanced guides....

By far, the easiest way to root is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613
You just need an SD card, a card reader, some software you download for burning the card, and the downloads in the thread.
Universal root is what is says.
Gapps refers to the Google Applications and Play Store is one of them
Unknown Sources lets you install files not from Barnes and Noble.
For now, ignore the other files until you get that working.
The nice thing is you can't brick your nook, worst case you just have to try to reboot 8 times to be back where you started.
Enjoy and welcome!
Thanks I'll see if this works for me!

What the site doesn't tell you is the order in which to flash. It's also a lot of info to decipher. Leapinlar has done an incredible job providing all of the resources and info needed. Here's what I did using that thread:
1. Follow the instructions in the thread for burning the cwm image to the sd card. There are easier instructions here that Someone0 posted:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34954992&postcount=132. Someone0's directions are for Win7, so it should be close to Win8.
2. Take the sd card out and reboot your Nook like normal.
3. Connect Nook to PC via USB and copy the Universal Root zip and the Gapps zip to your Nook internal storage (on top level so it will be easier to find.
4. Shut down and reinsert your burned sd card. Boot into recovery via power + volume up.
5. Once in cwm, don't hit the N button unless you want to select something. The power button is "nack" i think, but don't quote me on that. Navigate cwm to install the zip from internally storage. Make sure you find internal storage or you won't see any zips.
6. Once flashed, shut down, take out card, and reboot.
7. Discover the wonderful world of a rooted device.

Power button is Home (Top) I think.
You also need ADB running to copy the files over, no? Or are you copying to internal memory using MTP... Can you flash from there? I had just copied the zips to the card while it was in the card reader on the Windows machine. Then the zips are on the CWM card. After you are done, just do a nandroid backup with CWM too in case something gets borked later...

Wow, you're talking about LeapinLar's Nook HD/HDplus Stock Root - via CWM flashable zips thread. Let me correct and clarify those steps a bit:
1. To burn an image to your sd card in Windows, download the win32diskimager-binary.zip, unzip, and run the exe. Write the unzipped CWM image file (be sure to use the one for your device) to the sd card in your computer/card reader. (The post linked to is for getting adb working which you don't need for this.)
2.-3. Leave the sd card in your computer after burning the CWM image and just copy the zips to it.
4. With your nook off put the sd card in and turn on (no need to press the volume up).
5. Once CWM starts up, install zips from sd card (vol + & - are up and down, n button is select, power is back to previous menu). Do the universal root first, then gapps.
6. After the zips are installed, take out the sd card and select reboot.
7. Look around these forums for more info on enjoying your rooted Nook!

Actually, I was just combining what others told me with that leapinlar was saying to do. What I wrote is what worked for me, so I was just trying to help.
Rooting by changing internal code
Been searching for something I stumbled along awhile back. It requires disassembling the Nook HD. My eyes are heavy from search. Supposedly there is another SD card in the nook and a few words need changing. Anyone recall were it is?

Loaded clockwork. Can't load the cards with the builds

It took me a while to figure it out, but so far what I've done is I've loaded clockwork using the image writer onto a micro sd card.
Load it up on the nook. When it hits menu, I took the card out, reformatted it, loaded on the distro for CM10.
Problem is, when I put the card back in and tried to mount it, no mount.
I next tried keeping the distro on the nook's internal flash memory.
But again, can't mount it.
If I try to move the distro to the card with the image written, it says no space.

You are not saying which device, except you say CM10, which probably means HD+. If you have an HD+, got to my HD+ SD install guide linked in my signature. It has an image that makes it easier since you can mount with internal memory. Or you can use the Hybrid install which makes it run a bit faster.

I cannot mount the /emmc.
I have no idea why it won't work. It should work.

If you are using verygreen's image, it cannot mount emmc. He has disabled it. Use mine from the thread I mentioned earlier, it has been modified to allow that. And you don't need to mount it with mine anyway, just choose "install zip from SD/choose zip from internal memory".

OKay, did the 4gb clockwork installer. It does allow me to flash, but I'd really prefer to only flash a card and leave the device vanilla if I remove a card.

There is no 4GB image in that thread, only My CWM thread has one, and that is for stock, not CM10. If you go to the correct thread, it will all be clear. I made that thread just for people like you that were having problems installing CM10 and confused.
But if you don't want to go there, don't. I just was looking back at the threads and you asked twice in two different threads and I gave you the same answer in both threads. Some people are just beyond help.

There is no option in the thread to make a pure bootable sd drive with no alterations to emmc memory. I've read it a few times. So your guide is misleading.

And the Title and the first paragraph of the CWM thread says it is for stock only. How can that be misleading?

[Q] SD Card installation [CM10] - Nook HD

I bought a Nook HD and would like to try out CM10 via an SD card installation. I've read through a lot the android developer forum topics, but I am confused as to what the SD card installation actually does.
I am following the steps for "CM10 sdcard Installer" from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063968
I used PlugPBX to format and write the IMG file to my SD card.
Before I plug it into my Nook HD, I like to know what it means in step 5: 'Wait for it to finish installation." Does this mean the package from the SD card will install CM10 to the internal memory? Or does that just set it up on the SD card? After doing it this way, am I still able to remove the SD card and reboot to go back to the stock Nook OS?
Sorry, for the noob questions, but I didn't want to do anything that might not be easily reversible, possibly void the warrant, or make it so I can't return the Nook HD within B&N's 14 day window.
Thanks in advance for the help!

What that is referring to is the SD needs to make more changes to prepare the SD for installing CM. It creates more partitions on the SD and formats them so a ROM can be installed to it later. No changes are being made to your internal memory or stock setup. Then you still need to install the actual CM ROM. And at any time, when powered off, you can remove the SD and boot to stock as if nothing were ever done to it.

To flash the ROM I just put cm-10-20130101-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird.zip from the link in the OP on the root of the SD card and install via the CM recovery, right?
Then do I need to flash the Gapps separately?
The order doesn't matter and I don't need to wipe anything in between right?
The order does matter, ROM first and gapps second. But you don't have to wipe anything.
And why are you choosing that old CM10 ROM from January? Use the latest CM10.1 ROM, you will be happier. And if you do, you will need a newer gapps too. Gapps-20130301-jb-signed.zip. Get it from goo.im.
And no, you do not put the CM ROM on the root partition, since recovery will not see it there. Follow the directions in the OP to get it where recovery can see it.

[Q] CM 10.2 flash with Windows for starters

Hello everyone!
This is indeed my first thread and i am totally new here. I ordered a new nook hd+ and read on a thread, that it runs a lot smoother with CM 10.2 on it. So i read some other Threads... some seemed out-dated and the development thread was quiet full of infos but nothing to start with. I hope, someone can help me and this thread maybe of help to others, who start from scratch.
As far as i understood, i need
* an appropriate SD-Card (want leave the original/stock ROM on it for warranty reasons) . I buyed a transcend 32 GB class 10 microSD card as i read, it is quite compatible with the Nook HD+.
* an Image i want to boot. From the development thread, i downloaded cm-10.2-20130923-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-sdcard.
* a bootable SDCard. There some systemfiles in the zip file and a ramdisk.img. I use Win32 Disk Imager, choose this ramdisk (?), write the files to the (unformatted) sdcard and copy the systems files after that.
* a optional package for the google apps (gapps). From the "flash for dummies" thread i took gapps-jb-20130813-signed which has the same file structure, so i assume, i need to copy that to sd card too.
-----------------------------
I hope, there is no flaw in this procedure so far What i missed is: What comes now? Does the Nook automatically boot from the sd card? I would assume, that it does not. I read some hints, that i should copy the "install files" (i assume all of the unzipped files) to the Nook first. Some say, you need root, some say you don't actually and yeah... this is the point where it starts to become misty :fingers-crossed:
Can someone assist me? I would say, i read most threads as far as i could but at some point i was lost. TWERP? USBHost? Set permissions manually? Superuser app? I have an idea what to do but it is no straight line anymore
Thanks in advance
You have it right except for the making a bootable SD. You need to go to verygreen's CM10.1 SD thread referenced in the post you got the cm zip from. Look for early 7.1 zip and extract it and burn that with win32diskimager.

I would not recommend side loading as your first ROM experience. just follow the guide and before you flash the rom make a back up of the device. That way when you need to revert you have a complete image ready to just load.
SO make sure you log into you B&N account and get the Google play app update(i.e. latest update, just search for updates, just to be sure) before you start. This will save you loads of time later if you need to revert.

What do you mean sideloading a ROM? You mean installing a ROM to SD? Why recommend against that? It is the safest way to go since it does not modify internal memory.
And what guide are you recommending he follow?

I will try it according to your suggestions! Thanks alot!

[Q] Can I use the same bootable SD card to install CM11 on multiple Nook HD+?

Hello fellas, so I followed one of Leapinlar's guides on how to install CM11 onto my Nook HD+ 16gb. Everything went great and my Nook has been performing flawlessly all this time. I happen so have two Nook HD+ devices, and now that I know how much better CyanogenMod is compared to the stock OS, I want to install CM11 on the second one as well. I still have the bootable 2GB SD card I used to install CM11 on the Nook (used same card to backup stock B&N OS). At this stage, I plan on using the Nook until it dies on me, gets broken, or stolen. I don't see why I would go back to the stock OS.
1. Could I use the same bootable SD card to install CM11 onto the second Nook? was the serial # or anything of that sort saved onto the SD card making it unique to the device or something?
2. I have already done a Full baseline backup of my Nook on a FAT32-formatted SD card that isn't bootable. Is this backup better than the original bootable backup SD I made originally? Why would I still need the original stock B&N OS backup?
I couldn't find any threads on the subject, so I'm kind of hesitant to try it myself. Don't want to brick the Nook. Maybe one of you has tried it. Well, Happy Holidays to all of you. Thanks for the great forum.

My understanding is that even bootable variants of CM11 still go to the Nook's internal storage to get device serial #, MAC address, etc. So, one bootable SD card should be portable between devices.
I originally created a bootable SDcard variant of CM11 and liked it so much, that I decided to install it internally. Before I did that, however, I did back up the entire device (in case I decide to sell it). I then (search for the thread) made a bootable SDcard with B&N's OS v2.20. That way, if there's ever a reason you want to go back to the B&N OS, you can.

Yes the same bootable SD can be used on multiple HD+ devices. But the backup files from the first device should be moved somewhere else since there is not room for two different backups on a 2GB card. And that first backup is unique to that device and should not be used on the second device, but the basic CWM is ok to use.
The original stock backup is useful if you want to go back to the way it was before installing CM. But it is not really necessary since you can flash the stock ROM from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature (item 6) to get back to original out of the box condition. This might be useful if you need to return the device to B&N under warranty. Having CM installed on it when you return it voids the warranty.

I'm sorry, one last question. Would it be accurate to say that I can drag and drop the original B&N backup file I have in my 2GB sd card to my computer, zip it, save it, delete it from the sd card, and then do the same process for the second Nook HD+? Zip, save, and delete the original backup. Would the sd card still be bootable to install CM if I were to play around with only the backup and nothing else? DeanGibson and you leapinlar have pretty much answered my question completely. At this point I just want to pick my brain, all of this was pretty interesting. I won't bother you guys with any more questions regarding this subject, so thank you very much for the help.
Just one answer

Yes you can copy the backup files to your PC and delete the originals, but there is no need to zip them since they are already compressed and it is best to leave them native since they need to retain their md5 sums. The card will still be bootable.
