I bought the original Nook Color back in Nov. 2010. I went through all the methods back in the day, when guys first started rooting the Nook and all the problems we had back then ... side loading apps ... adhoc issues ... B&N updates ect ... we got CWM recoveries and finally we got fully working froyo's and Gingerbread's. Then CM7's and the Phiredrop's.
I been through it all. I ended up giving my Nook to my son, and he loved it. I got into Android Development Cell (ROMS). I Now got my Nook back from my son. It is working, but I have forgotten a lot about how to mod it .... mainly the partition tables, and how the bootloader runs. Does it look to the eMMC first ? or the SD-Card ? Can we flash from both locations ?
Anyways ... He has it setup weird now. It has a dual boot menu, I can boot into CM7 or CM9, But it is acting up and some stuff doesn't work. He also says it can boot into Stock 1.4.2 somehow *shrug*
I have done some searching here on xda but it is a lot of OLD posts and dead links.
Could you guys help me out with a few questions ?
01) I would like to wipe EVERYTHING from eMMC abd SD-Card and start over. I know I can format the uSD and also format the eMMC, but Can I flash a SD with a CWM image and then install Stock 1.4.2 on the eMMC. Do I even need to install stock first ? What is the best method for this ?
02) Will I need to nooter my nook again at this point if I do that ?
03) Can I run CWM on the SD and run a nandroid backup to that same SD if it is a large SD-Card ? I thought I could since the bootloader looks at uSD first (but I guess it looks at the boot partition huh ? ) my son says NO you can not run CWM and have a nandroid backup on that same SD. Yes or No ?
Bottom line is this is what I’m trying to do……
01a) I could care less about stock B&N.
02a) I just want a Nook that will dual boot into CM7 and / or CM9 preferably from my 16 GIG SD-Card but it really doesn’t matter, as long as I can install app’s to the external SD-Card.
03a) I want a way to backup the entire CM7 or CM9 via CWM to my SD-Card.
NOTE: I have a (1) 16 GIG SD-Card (1) 4 GIG SD-Card and (1) 8 GIG SD-Card.
If you could help me out with any info at all on any of this, please do so. I am mostly Android literate and I have a working ADB on my win7. I just have forgotten exactly how the nook operates at the lowest level, and how the newer CM's are flashed now after a clean format

Partition talbes and mount points
The Nook Color boots from uSD first... then eMMC if there is no bootable uSD in the card slot.

Create a new bootable CWM recovery uSD and place one of the files from here on it.
Boot into CWM and flash the file you downloaded.

Only if you want stock to be rooted... not necessary if are going to flash a different ROM to eMMC or don't care about stock root access. If you choose to root stock.... use this thread

Yes.... I do that frequently.. the thing is... the nandroid backup will be of the eMMC unless you use one of the modified CWM's designed for SD installs.
Additionally... if you are going to run that from a uSD with another ROM on it... you will certainly have to adjust the boot partition on the uSD to be large enough to hold the nandroid you are creating.

So you are saying that I can do it in this order:
1) Format eMMC ( only boot partition right ? )
2) Format uSD ( resize boot partition to a larger size for backups )
3) Create bootable CWM uSB ( any particular one you recommend ? )
4) Put one of the stocks 1.4.x files on the uSB then flash it
5) Put CM7 or CM9 on uSB and flash it
Question: Do I need to flash stock 1.4.x even tho I dont want it ? or can I skip step #4 ?

Item 1) highly NOT recommended. There is no point to format /boot.
Item 2) if "uSD" means the external microSD card, then, no, you don't need to format it since it will be done in step 3 of your list.
Item 3) Get the CwMR version 3.2.0.1. And call it "flashable CwMR uSD", not uSB.
Item 4) If you don't want stock, leave it out as no point to touch it.
Item 5) After done step 3 above, put CM7 OR CM9 in there, the CwMR uSD, and flash.
Strongly suggestion: before doing anything. Be sure you know what you trying to do or at least, pls let us know what you try to accomplish. For example, do you try to run CM7 or CM9? Do you want to run it from the external uSD card or from eMMC? Instructions are different.

Thank you for the update info. Glad I asked first. Thank you Dizzy for your help, you have been a big help to me in the past also. Votinh thank you for your reply. Looking back at what I wrote I see many mistakes in my process. Thanks for correcting them.
Now ... as to your question Votinh. What is it I am trying to do.
First off this is what I currently have. Nook is working, but not well and just a mess in general. Sometimes it locks up or just runs at a crawl. ( I have CPU oc'd to 1200 ) I have CM7 and CM9 but can't seem to boot into CM9 anymore at all. I also have CWM v3.2.0.1 installed on my external SD-Card with a nandroid backup.
I just want to erase it all and start over : )
I want my Nook to be able to Dual Boot into CM7 and CM9. I would like both CM9 and CM7 on my 16 GiG SD-Card, BUT if that is not easy or possible then I would like CM7 on internal and CM9 on external. I dont need stock.
If all else fails ... or just to complicated I could live with just CM9 (nightlies or stable) with all APPS installed to external SD. and forget about dual boot.
Again thank you .... and please ask me any more questions you might need to help clarify my goal.

So far, everything you've asked are doable, in fact, a lot of members currently having the same system you describe.
Firstly, "I would like both CM9 and CM7 on my 16 GiG SD-Card" is called "dual-boot, it is a true dual-boot.

Note: both CM7 AND CM9 are on the external uSD card.
Secondly, "then I would like CM7 on internal and CM9 on external."; since your wish is granted , this is just an option for you. Yes, you can easily install CM7 in eMMC (aka internal memory) and booting CM9 off uSD as you want.

Once again, NEVER format the eMMC short of a catastrophic event, (sometimes referred to in tech circles as a Mountain Dew Event.)
Mr72 has good instructions for getting 7.2 up and running on eMMC, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443292
You'll want to use his directions to load the image found in mrg666's thread here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873
Dalingrins would be redundant as it is already part of this build. You *will* want to run the V6 script as it is well worth it.
Once you've got that going well you should have read around enough to be able to load CM9 nightlies on an SD card. You *do* have a Sandisk card, right?

In bold: sure, but what do you try to do? Format the internal so that you can install something else on it?
I currently have CM7.2-RC1 Kang running on eMMC, it is really good.
Booting off uSD is more like for experimental, play it for a while to see if we like it or not. For trying, I recommend using uSD.
I have not spent more time on CM9 since I don't see much of the benefit of it.
Also, MisRy covered pretty well there.

Thanks for the info Misry. I have many sd cards and have used them all will good results. My Sandisk is only 4 gig ... so it was not going to be my first choice. I also have a Class 4 8 Gig Kinston I was thinking of using. Or a Class 10 16 Gig Patriot, which I know people dont like, but it seems to work fine in my phones ....?

The difference in the SD card class as far as speed comes down to the size of the information we want to write. The lower classes aren't very fast with the large hunks of info, but excel with the tiny byte exchange used in the ROM. As the speed of your system will really be affected by the slow I/O rates of something like a class 10, compromise on size before class. It may be counter intuitive, but people have given up on cyanogen in general only because they had the wrong sdcard. This is especially true if you have a dual boot and are running the ROM off of the sdcard itself.
Look at the "strange results or how I learned to love cm" or something thread. Google that with xda and nook and you'll find it. That has all the info you'd want and way more.
Do another book with Eddie Campbell and we'll call it square. You know you want to.

Well I was testing a homemade script and I believe I did in fact format eMMC and either scrambled the boot partition or deleted it also on emmc. No mater what I do I can not get eMMC to boot. I can boot cwm from SD-card, but nothing on eMMC.
Advice ?? please be as technical as needed. I do not have Linux right now, but I do have adb on win7 and 3 sd-cards

Well, let's see what we're working with...

Post the output of the above. It'll show what partitions are left (if any) and then we can take it from there. This can be a hassle indeed, and it will require some research as I have avoided doing this myself. I am hoping your ROM partition is still intact, at least.
Anybody else who can help, please do. I may not be able to respond as often as I would like.

He's gonna need a ROM partition for that to work.
For a long time, 8 failed boots would (as a last resort) result in a working Nook for just about every problem. But, as users are getting more experienced across the board, more advanced and dangerous stuff is being attempted.
When everything goes right, it can be pretty rewarding, but when it goes wrong...well, let's just say the solutions become a lot more advanced as well.
The output of the command will let us know which partitions are erased and if any are still intact. Considering the information we have so far, I am not hopeful. If the emmc was erased and formatted...well, we'll see.
Here's what has occoured:
over-wrote the following partitions with "0":
# 0p7 = /cache
# 0p1 = /boot
# 0p5 = /system
# 0p6 = /data
Then formatted 5-7 ext4. Flashing a ROM with a blank boot partition has been done on another device many times with no issues, for some odd reason this nook responded poorly and I believe the the boot.img never copied over to 0p1.
I am not sure what all he tried but I know he tried the flashable emmc fixer, which didnt' fix it. I am actually concerned that made it worse, but that's my opinion and I don't have my hands on the device. For what ever reason he couldn't get adb working with the device. I found this thread:

And since ADB wouldn't work, I wrote a script and created a flashable zip for him so it would perform the same operation, but it stopped saying bad zip. He tested it with 7zip and there were no errors, I checked my script and I see no errors in it and yes, I used a proper program for it as well, NotePad++. He's a bit frustrated and sending it to me. I am confident that if none of the things he tried didn't completely scramble the internal partitions that I can get it working. But if anyone has any idea as to why the script would fail, let me know.
Edit: And correct me if I am wrong, but it's the lack of a kernel which caused it to respond so badly. A similar thing happened on our phone but was due to powering off with a blank boot partition (not our noob moment but someone else's), but being that it's a tegra 2 system we have Nvflash and all is easily rectified. My theory is that there's something, most likely memory, which is loaded by the kernel and is required for a recovery to run.
He tried the 8 failed boot and it did bring up something which ended with an error about no boot partition, I'll try to get the picture he showed me later, I need to run off to work right now.

First, why in heaven's name would you purposely want to write zeros on the boot partition?
Second, adb was not working because there was no kernel or ramdisk on the boot partition since you had him zero it out. Adb needs both.
If he was trying to flash your zip with CWM from a bootable SD card, then the zip needs to be properly signed before CWM will flash it. You can have CWM toggle off that check, but I doubt he did that. Hence the bad zip error.
Also if he has his CM7 SD card still working, he can repair the emmc partitions using the terminal emulator from CM7. All the adb type commands can be run from there.
The boot partition probably needs to be reformated to vfat before it can accept any files from a CWM restore.
I bought a Nook HD and would like to try out CM10 via an SD card installation. I've read through a lot the android developer forum topics, but I am confused as to what the SD card installation actually does.

Before I plug it into my Nook HD, I like to know what it means in step 5: 'Wait for it to finish installation." Does this mean the package from the SD card will install CM10 to the internal memory? Or does that just set it up on the SD card? After doing it this way, am I still able to remove the SD card and reboot to go back to the stock Nook OS?
Sorry, for the noob questions, but I didn't want to do anything that might not be easily reversible, possibly void the warrant, or make it so I can't return the Nook HD within B&N's 14 day window.

What that is referring to is the SD needs to make more changes to prepare the SD for installing CM. It creates more partitions on the SD and formats them so a ROM can be installed to it later. No changes are being made to your internal memory or stock setup. Then you still need to install the actual CM ROM. And at any time, when powered off, you can remove the SD and boot to stock as if nothing were ever done to it.

To flash the ROM I just put cm-10-20130101-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird.zip from the link in the OP on the root of the SD card and install via the CM recovery, right?
Then do I need to flash the Gapps separately?
The order doesn't matter and I don't need to wipe anything in between right?
The order does matter, ROM first and gapps second. But you don't have to wipe anything.
And why are you choosing that old CM10 ROM from January? Use the latest CM10.1 ROM, you will be happier. And if you do, you will need a newer gapps too. Gapps-20130301-jb-signed.zip. Get it from goo.im.
And no, you do not put the CM ROM on the root partition, since recovery will not see it there. Follow the directions in the OP to get it where recovery can see it.

I'm trying to figure out how to install CM10 onto an SD card so I can dual boot my nook HD, but each time I read the instructions I get lost in more and more threads to the extent I'm totally and utterly confused.

Download the compressed image file cm10-sdcard-installer.img. Posted: 12/28
Unpack and write the image to your sdcard. For more info on how to do it, see this post.
(optional) To install CM10.1 instead of CM10, replace 'CM-10-hummingbird.zip' of the SD card boot folder with any CM10.1 image file you can download here in this page (you need to rename the file exactly as above).
Insert into the device and boot (cold)/reboot (warm).
Wait for it to finish installation.

Two things tell you. First the CWM itself will say for SD and second, the name of the zip file says for SD.

Just bout a Nook HD from the pawn shop. Turn it on and it wants me to register. I have 2 Nook Colors. I registered them. rooted and added Cyanogenmod. Seems as I recall back that it was best to register them right away. I was just thinking, why? Why not just update it with no registration. Pros and cons please. Thank

The only advantage to registering a new nook is it starts your warranty. But since this is used from a pawn shop, it is probably registered to someone else and you can't register it anyway.

I have tried like 3 times and every time nothing happens. I put the gapps and a file named "cm-10-20130511-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-sdcard" onto and sd card. Reboot it into recovery, delete system files, install those two etc, and it always is still cyanogen 10.2 every single time. I want cyanogenmod 10 so that I will be able to play with wii remotes and bluetooth and stuff and yeah. That was one of the main reasons I wanted my nook. If there are any other ways to do that, that would be great as well. And then two more things, when I reinstall and delete system files, all the stuff ont he internal memory are still there and I don't know if it is supposed to be like that? And then another problem with my nook is that sometimes when I try to unlock it the screen just blinks and won't open no matter what and I just have to reboot. And lastly, when I am charging the nook it always jsut keeps blinking no matter what I try. If you could respond asap that would be great, I kinda need it for school and don't feel like installing everything if it won't be permanent. Thanks a lot!

Yes, you have a lot of questions in that post. First, explain a little better what you are running. That CM10 zip is for an SD install and I am betting you are running CM10.2 on internal memory.
And wiping with CWM usually does not delete media files from internal memory.
And the unlock screen problem is probably the magnet in you cover. Open the cover twice to get around it.
Don't know the problem about charging/blinking.

All I remember is that what I installed the cm 10.2 with is 2 zip files from an sd card, and did the same as I did when I tried 10. However, when I did 10.1 (What i weas running before all of this) I installed through a bootable sd card with zip files. And how do I get rid of stuff on internal? Do i need to? Thanks for all the other answers too. And is the file name I even sent you cm 10? Just want to make sure so I am not being stupid. Also the stuff on my sd card is still all the same I just used a different external sd card for the install. (Which I would rather do if possible)

They are all for SD. (You can tell because the say 'sdcard' in the name.) Why is it you think you need CM10? If you want it you must install it on SD. There is a thread for it in the dev section. Ok, is the emmc one the one that I can install on the internal memory? And i dont get it because it says to use the same install method for the one that I did and you say that that install message is wrong. And then, can I still have stuff on my sd card while it has the install on it or does it have to just be for the install. And then for gapps and cwm do I have to install those again? sorry for my stupidity
Yes both the SD install and the emmc install use a bootable CWM SD to install them. But the CWM SDs are different. The CWM menu is the same, but one is coded to install the ROM on internal memory (emmc) and one is coded to put the ROM on the same SD that the CWM is on.
For a long time only SD installs were available, then the developer figured out how to install to emmc. Now almost all ROM zips are for emmc.
You did not answer my question about why you think you need CM10. You said something earlier about wii. I don't think CM10 on the HD supported wii.

Sorry I wrote this whole thing to you and then accidently deleted it, the only reason I actually need it is for wii remotes to work via bluetooth. The newer cyanogenmods and android builds broke it so it supposedly only works in cyanogenmod 10
And then in response to the last one, all i need to do is install the emmc? Do i need the newer gapps or cwm? And i just do it the same way as i did before?

If you want CM10 you must install to SD, not emmc.
But your wii information for CM10 is for other devices? Do you know if wii ever worked on the HD+ with CM10?

Nook HD not charging since CM11 install
This morning I installed the latest CM11 build (M11) on my daughter's Nook HD. Prior to that I was using the stock ROM with no issues. Since installing the ROM the tablet will not charge; rather than showing an orange light the device shows a green light whenever the charger is connected.
It seems possible that my cable has failed at the same time as performing the install, though a little unlikely.

Newbie Questions - B&N HD+
Hi - i am going to flash my B&N HD+ for the first time. i have been reading the forums and instructions and have few questions.
i want to do this without SD card (i can go buy one but i if not needed, i prefer not to use it). is this possible? in the EMMC thread, i still see that the SD card must be used for the flashing/booting. so essentially, to flash CWM 6046, is it possible to not use SD card? and if so, can someone tell me how to do that?

No, you must use an SD. There is no other way. And I suggest you use the dummies guide linked in my signature.

NookHDVolumeAdjuster for CM11 or CM10.2 ?
Is there a version of NookHDVolumeAdjuster that runs under CM11 or CM10.2 ? I am using version 1.0 under CM10.1.3. When I tried CM10.2, the sliders were all stuck at the far left. I need the sound higher volume, so I can't upgrade to CM10.2 or CM11. thanks.

Good morning,
I was working on flashing my nook last night with
cwm-recovery-ovation-6.zip
cm-20141224-NIGHTLY-ovation.zip
I have tried many different versions of stock, modular-full, modular-mini and gets a status code 6, I have successfully flashed gapps-kk-20140606-signed, but when I try to use it, the playstore just hangs like it is loading. Can someone advise the steps I need to take to successfully install a working version of gapps?
I have tried factory wiping several times and flashing the various versions of GAPPS.
Thanks in advance for any assistance that you provide.

I'd suggest that you try resetting the Google Playstore app: go to Settings->Apps->Google Playstore, and do a "force stop" and "clear data" (after which you'll need to re-enter your Google (Gmail) account login/passwd).
CM11 M12 - Device Temperature
Hi all,
After staying around on CM10.2 for a long time due to a few issues with earlier snapshots of CM11, I've decided to upgrade to M12. Finding it runs great on everything I'm doing - definitely smoother performance. One thing I am concerned about is the temperature hike of my tablet, particularly when charged and running a game (in this instance, Terraria). Is anyone finding the back running quite hot? Can feel it on the screen and the left side of the device, but the temperature reading of 32C/90F doesn't seem that bad... it does feel worryingly hot though. Not sure if it's something on my end or a common thing with CM11, but I never had this on any other build.
As a sidenote - do the developers accept donations?
Audio stuttering in Rayman Jungle Run
I just did an SD card install of CM11 on a Nook HD+ and it's been working well (thanks!), except that I've noticed that the audio in Rayman Jungle Run and Rayman Fiesta Run tends to stutter / warble, making it unpleasant to listen to. Youtube and Great Big War Game sound are good. I'm using cm-11-20141129-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-sdcard.zip with its initial sdcard image for ovation (sdcard-cwm-early9.img) from the first post. The micro SD card is Samsung class 6 16GB.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Well, what I did, is I found the thread here that describes how to put B&N's OS v2.2.0 on a bootable microSD card. Once I had that working (it's not like B&N is ever going to update the firmware), I did a backup of the Nook's internal storage, and then installed CM11 on the internal storage.
That should solve your performance issues.
Note: You mention an HD+, but then refer to "Ovation", which is the name for the HD, not the HD+. You may want to edit your message to clarify the situation.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I would have done an internal install, but when I tried to backup the built-in firmware 2.2.0 using CWM 6.0.4.6 (from the OP), I got an error due to the /system partition being unmounted (I'm recalling this from memory; I hope I got it right). I tried using the mount option in CWM, but that failed too. I then said "screw it with the backup... I'll find another on the web", and then tried to do an emmc install of the latest milestone (M12) from the cyanogenmod download site (using SDCARD CWM-based 6.0.4.6 booted from SD... not internal memory), but the install failed with a "status 7" error (IIRC). I also tried using an earlier microSD image (sdcard-cwm-early7.1.img) and tried to install a backup of stock 2.2.0 firmware that I found from another thread here (thinking that maybe I had borked my own from an attempt at installing recovery CWM), but that finished too quickly (yet no errors), and on reboot it didn't appear to have overwritten my own stock firmware. After these efforts spanning a half dozen or so hours of reading, experimenting, etc., I was able to at least get the SD card install working, so I said screw it, I'll just use SD card. But I would really prefer an internal install as you suggest.
I wasn't able to get CWM to boot from internal memory, only SD card (Samsung 16gb class 6). I didn't try very hard though. Maybe this is the reason I can't do an emmc install or backup? Can you only backup internal memory after having booted from CWM recovery (on internal memory, not SD card)?
I was able to find a post somewhere that related the /system problem to rooting, but I never have rooted my Nook HD+ (manufactured Dec'12).
After reading more about the slow 4kB random write performance on most SD cards, I'm thinking of getting a Sandisk class 4 card, but I'd rather not go there if not necessary.

This worked! I now have an emmc install of cm11 M12 from the cyanogenmod site. Since I'm running Ubuntu GNU/Linux, not Windows, I replaced steps 1 to 3 in your instructions in the above link with (at terminal prompt, with microSD card inserted but unmounted):
gunzip emmc-cwm-early3.1.img.gz
sudo dd if=emmc-cwm-early3.1.img of=/dev/sdb
I then mounted the microSD card and copied (as root) the zip files as in your link, all with terminal. The unmounted /system partition error did not appear, and the M12 install went fine! When wiping I had an error related to sd-ext missing, but from some more searching I concluded that it was benign.
Thank you for helping me out. I was starting to give up before the help I've received here. I'm generally really pleased with the performance of cm11 on Nook HD+ so far. I'm not yet noticing much difference between emmc and sd-card installs, performance-wise.
Unfortunately, the earlier performance problem (sound stuttering/warbling in Rayman Jungle Run) is still there using this internal / emmc install vs. the earlier SD-based install of cm11, which suggests that the problem is in cm11 itself. On stock firmware (version 2.2.0 I believe when tested), Rayman Jungle Run ran fine (no sound problems at all). The sound problem may be a slowdown problem, but it's not severe.
