Wow - What a Great Watch

I just picked up a Gear a few hours ago, and all I can say is WOW. After reading all the negative
reviews, I was expecting a quick look and then a return to the store, but after playing with this watch
for the last few hours, I have come away VERY impressed. This is the 4th smart watch I've owned,
and it's head and shoulders above the ones I used previously (MetaWatch, Wimm Labs, and Sony 2nd Gen).
Those watches all had their plusses and minuses, but this watch it a much more complete package. And it
should be, since it's not cheap. But still a lot cheaper than the Tag and Omega that I have
First off, the look is great. I got the jet black version, and it has a very understated tech look. It fits great on my wrist,
and is very light.
Second, everything I have tried so far works, and works the way I would expect it to. Calling, charging, s-voice, and all
the apps I have tried. The camera is great, and works well with the wine label app. The display is gorgeous, much
better than the displays on the previous smart watches I've tried.
My long term concerns will be battery life and sustained connectivity, which were 2 of the biggest issues I had with
other smart watches. If it can pass those tests, then it's a keeper.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I wonder if a lot of the reviewers that just destroyed this watch don't have a little heartburn
that Apple wasn't first to market. This watch will get very good very fast if they add apps quickly to the market.
I'll finish by saying that if you're on the fence on this watch, pick it up. If you temper your expectations (don't expect a DSLR
on your wrist, understand that 3rd party apps may be limited initially and sometimes buggy), you'll be very happy with it...

yes it does come off as weird why these tech sites are very eager to proclaim it as failure or DOA. we shall see though who is right but based on the reviews here its not as piss poor as they make it out to be.

I completely agree, I got my watch on Saturday and I have to say that I'm impressed and that's amazing considering I pair it with GS3 and some features still don't work! It was quite amusing today in the office with people couldn't actually believe it was real lots of iphone owners asking would it work with their phone ! I'm not sure why all those negative reviws, not sure what people expected, but if you take it for what it is - it's an amazing piece of technology! By the way, I charged it last night and got home tonight and it was on 70% battery - that's much better than what I hoped for!

I also think the watch is much better than how major tech reviewers are rating it in their reviews.
Pros:
1. Good looking design with some choice material- Sapphire glass, brushed stainless steel and high quality band
2. Very nice display
3. Smooth and lag-free operation
4. Nice and tight integration with smartphone
5. More than acceptable phone and camera capability
6. Limited to Note 3 for the moment ( this pro is applicable to me as a Note 3 user for a while~ )
7. Great to have the event and message reminder via a gentle vibration on the wrist!
8. Built-in pedometer and health apps
Neutral:
1. Battery performance- acceptable for a day's operation but could use a bit of margin.
2. Wrist band- acceptable but would be nice to have the flexibility to change the color
Cons:
1. Insufficient notification support for Gmail and Facebook apps (SW)
2. No calculator! (SW)
3. No compass (SW, HW?)
4. No on-screen keyboard (They could've put together a creative keyboard layout to fit the wonderful screen for sure ) (SW)
5. High price
6. Limited choice of phone models (only if Samsung wants this product to succeed on its own merit, that is. With Samsung selling twice as many smartphones as Apple now, I don't see any reason why they need to make the watches compatible to other brand phones necessarily, as it can be yet another reason to buy a Samsung phone for those on the fence.) SW
So, really, other than the relatively high price, I don't see critical shortcomings of this watch that can't be fixed by software updates and apps support down the road. The knock-on feature of G2 would be nice to have on this watch to wake it up and shut it down as necessary, in addition to the motion sensor-based wake on feature that it already has.

Lets not forget what the critics said about the original Note 1. The press hammered that mobile yet it went on to give birth to a whole new generation,, the 'phablet'. Many brands have tried to copy the idea but non have come even close to selling the amount Samsung has and the note is now in its third year and on the third iteration having sold millions.
Smart watches in general have not yet been taken to by the market. This is in reality the first truly smart watch. Other brands will now rapidly try to play catch up as they have with the Note 1
In terms of Android devices Samsung appear to date to be the innovators in terms of technology.

Only issues are small software related ones. I am getting great battery life. Give it a little time for some developers to fill the gaps on the notification side.
Heck, the pebble is only really useful with 3rd party apps like Pebblify, so I don't know why people are so hard on the Gear.

I agree, it is a great product and a keeper here. (Had a Sony 1st gen. before.)
Battery life is better than expected. Keeps running for 2 days easily (brightness 2 / sound off).
Screen is excellent, performance sufficient.
More apps wanted now.

[thoughts] What the S5 needs to do before April 11th to earn my money

Well, THAT happened 10 hours ago........
The launch for the S5 came and my enjoyment faded pretty quickly. You can see from my track record in my signature that I've been a pretty loyal customer of Samsung for quite some time now, and this may be the first Galaxy launch that I won't have a pre-order in the system. Other than stepping away from the Galaxy line to pick up the Atrix 4G, the first mass produced phone with a fingerprint scanner, coincidentally, I've enjoyed only Samsung phones for the last 4 years. The "premium version" of the S5 was supposed to be 5th in line, what with the 20MP camera, metal body, G-Note 3 battery size, 5.25" screen - you've seen it all and read it all, it didn't show up today. Now unless Samsung is about to pull the biggest stunt they've ever pulled, the Unpacked5 event is in the books and we're not getting anything more than what we got today.
Is there any positive that came out of this event? Sure! USB 3.0 is a big thing for me as I have lots of 3.0 gear and want that from my next phone, it's dust and water resistant, cool fingerprint scanner providing it works flawlessly unlike the one on the iThing, updated TouchWiz which (try not to judge) I actually like a little bit, the wearables, the bigger focus on health, better processor, camera, and connectivity, but then comes the let downs, especially for S4 owners. Same 1080p screen at almost the same size, same 2GB of memory, almost the exact same front camera, soon to be the same OS (again, I like TW so I'm sticking it out on 4.3 until the TW 4.4.2 comes out), same plastic body that I don't necessarily mind, but would have appreciated a little change other than just putting dimples in the back cover, and probably worst of all to me, they're offering it in a 16GB format again after what they just did to us who pre-ordered and / or early adopted the S4, sticking us with next to nothing for internal space because they believe everyone has kids and needs to have likely a ton of space dedicated to a kid mode with pre-installed games and crap. I'm single and not looking for that anytime soon!!! It's like they claimed to listen to their customers but only those who are married, have children, want a "modern glam look," whatever the hell that means, and work out enough to bring their phone with them while exercising!
Damn that's a lot of negatives so far. So what can Samsung do between now and launch to earn my money short of releasing their ultra premium version that was supposed to exist but doesn't, and calling this one the S5 Neo? Let's take a look, and please, feel free to help me add to this list!
Ship the phone with an unlocked bootloader - I know, fat chance, right? But if you don't want people complaining about lack of storage, let us kill it off as we see fit! I also know it isn't up to Samsung on this, the carriers are the ones being douchebags about it, but Samsung put their foot down with them previously by stopping them from dictating all the individual revisions when they launched the SIII, making them all the same shape and size, so why can't they force their hand on this in the sake of making even the smallest group of their customers happy - those that truly use the phone for what it was meant for!
Negate the 16GB version - this is obvious, why the hell is this even a thing anymore with Samsung.... just get rid of it if you're not going to slim down this ridiculously large ROM of yours! Ship with the 32GB at minimum and announce the 64GB as well. iThings do this as a standard now, and while iSheep love to keep their music on their device and we have this little thing called external storage and another little thing called Google Music, we don't have to, but seriously, cut the crap and ditch the 16GB model!
Allow us to remove certain features we just aren't going to use, EVER - as I stated already, I don't have kids and don't need a Kids Mode. If you aren't going to let us root the thing AND aren't going to launch it with more than 16GB, let me get rid of the damn Kids Mode. Or the health features. Or anything else I decide useless or unnecessary. When looking at pics of the camera settings on the S5, I'm able to download more features as I see fit - why not make some of this crap downloadable and not don't ship it with the device? Why not make an Aroma-like installer when you first boot it and say "hey, would you like all of this crap or just some of it?" like any PC software does when it installs something - Typical or Custom installation. Sounds like I'm asking for a lot here, but really, I'm asking to not be forced a lot that I really won't use. And before you comment that if I don't need it, don't buy it in the first place, there are so many things I love about my S4 and TouchWiz that I'm not planning to part with in order to have "a phone," my N7 has a purpose and it isn't so I can keep the screen on when I need it just by looking at it. It does great for playing movies on a trip but not for letting me change the channel of my big TV when I want to watch a blockbuster movie....
Ship with at least the S805 processor for crying out loud - if you're not going to blow us away with something new and powerful, at least ship it with the very latest processor this time from Qualcomm. The 800 has been out for months, the 801 is obviously an incremental update over the 800, and the 805 isn't that much better, but at least give us the goods instead of just going along with the same processor found in the N5 and G-Note 3. I don't think we've heard which one for sure will be included, but from what I've read, so far they say it's the 800 or the 801. EDIT - it's the 801, confirmed by Qualcomm....
Include wireless charging in the box - I shouldn't have to say this, wireless charging is now old technology, the SIII had the capability but not the attention or love needed for Samsung to just release the official cover, the S4 cover took 3 months to post online for sale, and with all the competition shipping their phones with it included, why aren't we able to get it without paying $50+ for it? I used a 50% off coupon to get it for $25, but that's $25 more than I should have spent after being let down on a promise that the SIII was supposed to be able to do it on a phone with nearly useless internal storage....
Sell us some legit accessories this time, namely a car dock - I'm always impressed when people recognize me from my review on the only working car dock for the S4 since Samsung decided to screw around with the whole thing and make my Infuse dock useless. It worked on the Skyrocket and SIII, and would have fit the S4 except it wasn't possible to get the thing working properly by charging and outputting dock audio on it, so it's collecting dust in a box right now. Sure, I get it, you want to sell me something new instead of letting me use the same one for my last phone, and that's different than what you are doing (or didn't do?) with the wireless charging cover, but in this situation, you're not even selling me one! The S4 sold tens of millions of devices, did you stop and think that maybe ONE of them would be going in a car and being used for playing music or navigating that owner safely from one place to another?

That's all I got for now, I'm sure we can come up with more and while I highly doubt Samsung is listening to people like me, one of their 200M customers (I'd like to think I counted 4 times for buying 4 iterations of the Galaxy line), there's always a chance someone is listening. I bet they'll listen when they're trying to figure out why the sales figures are going to be monumentally lower this go-round, that's for sure!!!
A note to fanboys of all kinds, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, iThing, etc - let's keep it clean here, please. You haven't heard me bash anyone else here, even Samsung really, so please don't get this thread locked on me. I'm sure you have witty comments like Nokia and HTC have today, with their "Samesung," "Buyers Remose," and even the most original ones like telling me that you're disappointed or this phone is ugly.... As if we haven't seen those comments before. Be original if Samsung isn't, post something relevant to the discussion if you're going to post at all! I don't waste my time on writing this stuff to insult others, so don't do it to insult me. If you were never considering buying it, you don't have any reason to comment on here because nothing you're going to say will come across as helpful to myself or others. If you were considering buying it or even, dare I say switching from another brand, or actually will be buying this phone - let's discuss intelligently your reasons why!

In Slovenia in past month we have major electric blackdown becouse of mother nature - no internet no nothing.. but FM radio did work.. on my S2 I could still listen what is happening, but on newer device.. bljah.. must have tool which cost them 1 euro cent per device..

I agree with all you say. Particularly about wireless charging, and accessories which get launched with fanfare and then never see the light of day. The other thing they could do is to put one of the new gear items in the box too. That would be a good sweetener. Lol.

How do you know it doesn't ?

Two points here:
1. I see you are American, and that in the US the carriers **** in their customers' heads when it comes to freedom. The international S4 has an unlocked bootloader, it has been like that since the original S.
2. The Snapdragon 805 isn't available yet, sadly.
And why isn't 2GB of RAM enough? I have 300+ apps here, 9 accounts syncing and available RAM never goes below 700MB.

I'm going to point something out to everyone here that wants Samsung to get rid of security features such as locked bootloaders or Knox.
We are the minority. Do you Expect Samsung to tailor to us and risk the average consumer's information and safety so people can run an AOSP build or a custom kernel?

While I'm not excusing the US carriers for doing this, but why do you think they try to steer people away from rooting and unlocking the bootloader? People mess up, brick their phone, and then try to do a warranty claim on them. They're protecting their profits, and as a business you cannot blame them for that. Anyone else here would do the same thing to retain profits. And what do you mean "use the phone for what it was meant for?" The phone is meant to be a mobile multimedia cellular device, which in fact still does on the software it ships with no problem.

You can disable features you don't need. But just because you decide a feature you think is useless or unnecessary, does not translate to everyone else will think this too. I like the kids mode feature, I've got kids and nephews that get my phone somehow all the time.(Anyone with kids can attest to that too! ) I'm sure people will love this feature.

This is Qualcomm's area right here, ARM cpus are following the development of x86 cpus. Meaning it's reached a point now where development for ARM cores is slowing down, tremendously. We probably won't see any groundbreaking ARM cpu's come out for maybe at least a year or so now, took x86 cpus years to show good and cost effective performance gains.

I do agree with this, but also at the same time there are 100s of other companies making accessories that Samsung does not make.
Samsung is not going to tailor the phone just for one person or a small group, they're doing it for what they believe are the best choices for their devices. Looking at their track record of the Galaxy line up, I'd say they've got it down pretty good.

Why do u need a 2k screen on a 5" device? It eats battery life, it bogs down cpu and gpu performance for something that your eyes can't notice. I cant even see a pixel on my s4.

1. 5.2" inches screen in body-size of S4. It's not too hard if they look at LG G2.
2. Radio FM, and playable via loudspeaker.
3. Good camera in low light condition.
4. Smaller bezel, by aluminum.
5. QHD display.
6. Better performed in drop-test, maybe
7. Keep removable battery + external SDcard.
8. Snapdragon 805 or Exynos 64bit octa-cores.
9. Only 1 "main" international version, both have LTE-A, 4K video rec etc...
10. Wireless charging included.
11. Ram 3G
12. At least 32 GB internal memory, like Note 3.
13. Fingerprint inside screen.
14. Max brightness at 600nit, like Note3.
15. Flash Xenon for camera and flash led for Camcorder.
16. 120 fps video recording at 1080p
17. Not too heavy. <150g.
18. Clearer audio recording, noise reduction.
19. Stereo sound on louder speaker like HTC One.
20. A better earphone with improved DAC

34. Free lags, especially open the contacts/dialer must be faster.
35. Dual boot Android & WP, maybe triple with Ubuntu or GPE rom.
36. Update firmware at least 24 months, not like i9300.
37. Not too many versions in worldwide.
38. For some sharing features like Galaxy Beam, Samsung should share this app to works on other Android devices, (now we only have Android Beam).
The same for SS smart watch, smartTV....
39. Still support Adobe flash (it's not SS or GG obligation, but I hope it).
40. Improved airview and air gestures in smarter way than before (Example: hover finger on the links help user preview link, not zooming like now). Open the API for all the sensors function and support the developers to create much good app based on them.

When kitkat was being written all the engineers had to use a smart phone with only 512 mb of RAM.
This will be moot tho with TouchWiz which is the most bloated god awful software on Android. 2gb IS enough yet the s4 still suffered from lag.
With the newer processors not being available yet Samsung should have focused on design. They put zero effort into that. This will be their first flop in the galaxy line. And by flop I mean by their standards. It will still sell millions.

I have minimal lag here, but even Nexus can lag, it's not just TW or Sense.

this is so true. people just want a better spec sheet not realizing going above 1080p will actually lower benchmarks particularly with the s800 and 801 being the only SoC available now. To get something you probably wont even notice you will be sacrificing just about everything else performance wise.

Come on It was a pretty common bug on the s4. I have a Samsung tab note 10.1 and it lags considerably.
I've had numerous HTC phones over the years and sense has been toned down quite a bit. sense 3.0 was a system draining nightmare.
I really don't think you can compare a straight android ROM to A samsung rom and say with a straight face this makes no difference on performance or lag.
Just compare the size of a nexus 7 rom to any s4 rom.

Sure, the Note 10.1 is slow, but the problem isn't how light or heavy the ROM is, the lag happens because the Java-based Android Runtime isn't a optimized as iOS, for example.

It's actually dalvik at runtime. Dalvik virtual machine and kitkat is optimized quite well.
When you add a huge amount of code on top of that of course it will change the performance.

Actually that's a matter of opinion. My nexus 7 2013 and HTC one run as well as any iOS device I've played with. And they're of course other factors such iOS locked down system, boring home screen, no widgets, tiny screen etc.

Debating if I should get the watch or not, like to see some of feedback / reviews on your thoughts on those who own the wacth. I also been looking at the thread about battery life and other things, but overall do you feel like the watch is worth it?
Planning at stopping at AT&T to see if they have on on display for me to fiddle around with.

Love it. I'm not a watch person. Can't stand them but this has made me love them. It is a novelty but it is handy also

Absolutely. It is far from perfect BUT, the hardware side it's excellent implemented and this is offering Google Wear plaftform a solid base to grow. I expect to see may OTA's in the futures with fine tuning of some of the existing features and also with new stuff .
It is by far the best looking Android wear device.

From its exterior design it's not very perfect i.e. thick bezel, small screen compared to 360 but when I count every aspect including SoC, Sensors, Screen technology, build quality, etc, G Watch R is the best choice so far(except the expensive price).

its to small

When it first arrived I noticed that the screen was much larger than it looked online - perhaps all of the side-by-side comparisons with the Moto 360 made it look tiny, but it's actually a decent size. The battery life was impressive after the system update that comes about 10 minutes after first setup.
I mainly use it for changing my songs while I'm out and about. You don't realise just how much of a pain it is to take your phone out on the bus etc to switch songs, but having a few taps of the watch is such a convenience.
The only flaw I've noticed with the watch is when, for example, you switch both your watch and phone off in the night, and wake up and switch your watch on *first*... it basically shows the time that appeared on the watch when you switched it off! e.g. if I turn it off at midnight, then in the morning it'll show midnight when I switch the watch back on. I have to sync it with my phone again for the watch to acquire the correct time again. Not a big deal, and I assume it would get fixed eventually, but still...

I never turn mine off. Just stick it on charge over night.

Hi all. I'm coming back to android after many years away, well not entirely true as my BlackBerry Passport phone uses android runtime and comes pre loaded with amazon store which allows me to download straight to my BlackBerry about 85% of the apps out there.
Having said that, I'm still new to native android and was wondering if I were to buy a new gadget to go with my S6E, would a watch be a good one? If so, which watch to get please?

Android Wear is significantly better than Samsung's Tizen based wearables. I would suggest the LG GWR, best looking, fully round watch with the best specifications.

The curved Gear Fit is a good match from a design perspective and has a 2-3 day battery life

I currently use a Moto 360 with my s6 edge. Gets about 18 hours battery life, has wireless charging (no annoying clip/case chargers), and has great sunlight visibility. A lot of people do not like the "flat tire" look caused by the black bar at the bottom of the display but i don't even notice it anymore

I am loving the Moto 360 and LG Gwatch R- they are both awesome in their own right

I own a g watch r. I had the newest tizen based watched and took it back the same day for the g watch. The Samsung watch was like a smartphone on my wrist. It was just too much more than I needed. I went to Android Wear because it's more of an extension of android, and not a replacement. I went with the g watch over the 360 just due to personal preference. Both great devices, I just prefer the specs and the look for the R.
Only my opinion though. Check them all out in a store to get a feel for them.

LG has better hardware and people who seem to like it mainly because the Moto 360's flat tire angers them disproportionately. The Moto 360 has worse hardware, but it's the classiest of the Android Wear watches on the market today. Other watch options by different companies are varying degrees of nobody cares. Kinda.

I have both Moto 360 and Asus Zen watch. On balance I like the Asus watch better because it has an "always on" display. But I switch between the two often.

I love my LG G Watch R

I have the Moto 360. I love it for the ease of use, amazing battery life, and the round shape. I just recently added the pebble silver band to it, and it is a great accessory to my s6 edge.

I sold pebble, and moto 360 and bought GARMIN FENIX 3, battery life 2 weeks, and also smart watch, really great.

I had a Moto 360 and liked it a lot. I ended up buying a Samsung Galaxy Gear S though. It's Tizen based so it's a bit different than Android Wear but I LOVE it. Really happy with my purchase. It's more than an extension of Android the way Android Wear watches are. If you don't "need" all that though, I think Android Wear is just fine.

Gorgeous Moto 360 and Pebble Steel. I'm going for Pebble Steel though. Still saving up for it.

Moto 360

I started out with Pebble from the initial launch, but could never get over the fact that the low resolution display had jagged edges that could be seen from space (well, OK, I exaggerate a tad), and the feeling like the case was designed and manufactured by Fisher Price. Even the colors, which looked great on the web site and kickstarter videos arrived looking a bit more like lego plastics. Still, it did a pretty good job of presenting the notifications. I used the Pebble for a few months before the Samsung watches came out (and then I didn't get the original Gear until it had been out for a couple of months). The Pebble Steel does improve the looks of the watch by a wide margin, but the display did not look any/much better.
I then tried Galaxy Gear (original), Gear Live, and Gear 2 (full size one with camera). The Gear Live went back within a week as Android Wear offered so little functionality compared to the original Gear. I thought the Gear 2 looked a lot better than the original Gear despite being so similar in design, but the few changes made a nice difference and it felt better on my wrist. I used the Gear and Gear 2 each for several months.
When the ZenWatch came out, though, I was really impressed by how it looked on the wrist. The Moto 360 never really spoke to me from a style perspective and the complications of a round display just seemed to me that they would eventually limit what I could accomplish with it compared to the rest of the mobile/personal world that was centered around developers thinking about square presentation spaces. I love the ZenWatch looks and how it fits my wrist (and the bands are a fairly standard size and attachment compared to the Gear watches so you get a limitless selection for bands). I do miss a bit of the customization of the Gear capabilities at times, but Android Wear does win on the day to day stuff of notifications, ease of dealing with notifications, ease of dictating/sending text messages, and integration with navigation. I'll take those over the added functionality of the Gear in the long run, but I do wish Android Wear had a better focus on apps rather than just "notifications on steroids" (when I try to run a non-notification app I get frustrated with the process compared to just swiping across a number of app screens on the Gear devices). If Android Wear would even just offer a way to look back at old notifications it would make a huge difference - the Gear watches would both notify you of current notifications and they also had a screen to go to to see past notifications and even read full emails if you wanted. The Android Wear "cards" do let you click through to read more of the message when you get the notification, but once you dismiss the notice you can never get back to it on the watch.
I don't think Gear had navigation integration when I was using those watches (they may have gotten it since then), but the Android Wear does do an excellent job of keeping upcoming navigation steps at a glance on my wrist.
It will be interesting to see how the Apple Watch motivates Samsung and Google to improve either system.
In the meantime, I've been meaning to try the Gear 2 out again and see what enhancements they've added and how well it works with my S6 Edge...

I use my Galaxy S3 Classic with it without any issues. It's an older smartwatch but in the world of Android smartwatches still one of the best available options. I briefly owned the newer version of Samsung's offering, the stainless steel variant of the Active2 watch, but I found that it didn't offer much if anything in terms of improvements to the S3 Classic, while sacrificing a lot in design and practicability of the UX.

For Android you'll want to go with one of the new offerings with the gig of RAM, makes a huge difference in the GUI where they are vastly more smooth in operation. I'd set my sights on either the Gen 5 or TicWatch Pro. The Samsung devices work better with Samsung phones but still work ok with other android phones and have much better battery life but you give up all the options Wear brings with it. There are often big sales on smartwatches, often enough I'd consider it worth defining which one I wanted and waiting for a good sale to pick it up.

I'm curious - what options is he giving up because my understanding is that Wear watches are literally the worst wearables out there with the least useful features. Samsung devices are regarded as only second to Apple and work with any Android device. Genuine question.

Nah, the feature set was never the problem, it was the performance and poor battery life. I haven't owned an Apple watch and I'm not going to as the iphone is an answer to a question I never asked. Being as it's not a part of this discussion or going to be used on this phone I think we can set it aside. The Sammy offerings have much better battery life, it's not even close, and that is their primary benefit. They did also have far better performance but that has changed so long as you get one of the new offerings with a gig of RAM. Now the performance is much closer although I'd still give the nod to the Samsung devices. It is close enough however that it becomes a matter of features and available apps to my mind unless you have a Samsung phone and use their apps, in that case I'd go all in with Samsung. Now that wear can legitimately make it through a long day of use before it needs to go on the charger and the sluggish performance has been fixed wear becomes much more compelling than it once was. You have many more apps, watch faces, etc. Integration with Google maps is much better which is a big plus if you travel.
There was a reason why I mentioned both, Google essentially gives you options that you cant get with Samsung, the Samsung still has much better battery life and it's tight integration makes it better on Samsung devices but still good on other android phones if you're not missing any apps that you could have had on wear. It's something a user needs to make some calls on in terms of what they want. The only absolute mistake you can make here in my opinion is getting an older wear device without the extra ram, you want the 3100 and the 1 gig; that's a must have.

This is really good feedback. Maybe I should look at some Android Wear options again. I extended the life of my S3 by replacing the battery, and it is still a stellar option but one thing I always disliked was poor integration with Google Maps (relies or 3rd party app). It would be much better to have something native, closer to what one would encounter on an Apple Watch.

The Gen 5 is pretty good especially if you can get it for less than regular. It was $172 a few weeks ago on Amazon. I've had it since August and it's not perfect but I think very good. Battery isn't an issue for me as I just top off in the morning while getting ready and when I get home from work, a good 14-15 hours later with usually 40% or so to spare.

I've had the Sammy s2 and s3, and I DID like them a lot, at least at first. They were smooth and the battery life was good, but, the OS and features seemed pretty basic. I hated the workout app, and the only other offerings were terrible. Also, Samsung support suuuccckkks... It was like talking so someone who was just hired and had no idea what they were talking about.
Anyway, I have a Fossil Q Explorist 4 HR and I love it. It IS a little jittery sometimes, so you should definitely go with a gen 5, but it's great. Tons of apps to choose from, it looks great (I wear it to the office even), and battery life is almost on par with the s3. I take it off the charger at around 6:30am and at 10pm I typically have 40-ish% left. It would certainly last a full day.

One word of warning if someone might be setting their sights on a Ticwatch Pro: Get the LTE even if you don't want to use LTE because it has the extra RAM, the older version that is not LTE does not have it and it suffers from the sluggish GUI problem that all Wear watches had up until the recent offerings with the upped RAM. I know it's tempting because the LTE version is more expensive but you really, really, want that RAM, it completely alters the user experience while manipulating the GUI. Much, much smoother, apps load faster, etc.

Pebble Time Steel in Gold! Until a watch that can match the battery life (10 days!) + features comes along, I'll be sticking with my Pebble. Recently picked up another Gold, because my 4 year old one finally had the battery worn out too much, and also got a black one too.

Yes definitely this. 1GB RAM makes the difference. I believe it has the old 2100 processor but that's not really much a factor for performance as RAM is.

I bought the Fossil Carlyle on sale and it's really been great and it came with 3 watch bands that swap out easily. I had a Moto 360 Gen 2 that fell apart a few months ago so I was in the market. I just looked at the new Moto 360 and it looks really nice. The price tag is a little over the top at $350 but it should come down. I'm a little gun shy when it comes to Moto since the support was horrendous previously. Hopefully, it's gotten better.

Yep, the old Ticwatch pro uses the 2100 so it doesn't have the co-processor for ambient mode like the 3100. In their case they have the second display which also uses little power so it negates some of the loss but not all of it as the ambient isn't as efficient as it can be with a 3100 and lacks the 16 colors, adaptive brightness on ambient, etc. Still it doesn't change the performance when manipulating the GUI where both are using the same A7s so the felt performance is similar to a 3100 when the extra ram is in the mix.

The 3100 offers nothing in terms of a performance increase. It is literally a 2100 then Qualcomm slapped on the coprocessor and called it a day. The major difference will come from the extra gig of RAM which WearOS desperately needs. When you compare a 512 MB device to a 1GB device the performance difference is quite staggering. I have the TW Pro 4G using the JanJan rom and I couldn't be happier with the performance. Ball is still in Google's court to make something out of WearOS and for Qualcomm to stop being lazy scumbags.
