I got my Nexus 7 three days ago. It seems like sometimes when it's charging and I pick it up, the screen turns itself on. But I can't seem to purposely reproduce this behavior and I'm wondering if maybe I'm just hitting the power button without realizing it. Likewise, once or twice it seems to have put itself into sleep when I set it down. Can anybody confirm this behavior?
Mine has done this with me as well. There was one guy who posted that it had happened to him, but it was to do with a magnetic case. I've not got round to getting a case for mine yet, and there have been times where I've picked it up, 100% sure i haven't hit the power button, and the screen has come on....

This has happened with me too, turns out it was coming on when I left it charging on top of a speaker... Sometimes the screen wasn't coming on at all even if I pressed the power button numerous times.

Funny...come to think of it, the auto-off happened when I set it on my iPad, which is in a magnetic case.
P.S. - Am I allowed to say "iPad" in this forum?

Well when my n7 was switching itself on, it was sitting on a pillow on my bed, nowhere near any magnets. And when it happened I manually switched the screen off, put it back down again, and was able to repeat it again and again. So unless my pillows are magnetic...

That's actually a very good idea, something along those lines, I'd need to bore her with a subject that won't immediately let her know that I'm taking the p155, but having just got my n7, I could maybe just start talking to her all the time about it and nothing else lol
Who would have thought you'd even get relationship (avoidance) advice here on XDA
Thanks!!!

My be your bed company is "magnetic"? kidding!
I got twice this effect when at bed. And I found it perfect to wake the device in the dark because the start button is not so easy to get and very often is opposite to your available finger!
I had that before, but not since I upgraded to 4.2 I think.
It's a really cool feature, I hope Google add it.
I had this happen a few times as well. Try putting your device to sleep and wiggling the USB cable where it plugs into the N7. If you plug the charger in while the screen is off, the screen will turn on. I know mine doesn't have a real solid connection and if I pick it up while it's charging, it will sometimes cause the cable to lose its connection for a second or so and then move back into position, causing the N7 to essentially think you're plugging the charger in. You might see if that's what's happening with yours as well. I figured I was the only one and it wasn't a big deal so I've just been careful about picking it up while charging or transferring data.

When it happened to me there was no cable plugged in, and I was able to switch the screen back off, put it down again, and pick it up and make the screen come on again. Definitely never pressed any buttons or had it near any magnets.
I think it was before I had upgraded though. Some people say this would actually be a nice feature, and until you remember that everywhere you take your n7 away from home its gonna be switching on and of all the time in your pocket/car etc it would be....

I fully agree, but this feature will and must only be for in "home" use. So not active when lock screen is enabled.
When I'm at home is the main time that I do need the screen lock lol, if I'm out it's usually in my pocket.. The auto screen on would be a good feature at home though, I'm just not sure how it could be implemented.
Oh, wait, I just thought of something It's entirely possible right now. I could use my nice new app called Tasker, and set it up to tell the screen to come on when it feels movement. What's more, if I want it to only happen at home, I can tell it to only work when GPS says I'm home, or simpler, tell it to only do it when I'm connected to my home WiFi network. Tasker is a cool app.

nope not possible unfortunately, the n7 doesn't even have HDMI support.
Would you really want to do this though
The Nexus is a great device for a tablet, but used for a PC screen is totally not gonna work. Its too small.
You can get 15" monitors for hella cheap, I mean hey, I'd give you a 15" monitor if you paid my postage !!

I think most of the replies leading to where to get an lcd and hdmi support is kinda deviating from the op's principle inquiry and purpose.
As far as some constructive help, the only thing that I could think of is possibly taking advantage of the usb host feature and trying to find a way for a form of vga/dvi/display port conversion to usb. Then there is still the issue of whether you could get the tablet to use that in put from the usb host as a full screen display.
Its not a straight how-to or answer, but a good place to start looking for a solution.
Best of luck.
Way too much trouble to go through. Get yourself an IPS monitor, they are cheap now. TN panel monitors are so ridiculously cheap too.
Hi, I want the same thing too. We could simply use remote control apps through WiFi but it would be much of a hassle since we only need a display.
There are even apps that enables using the device as a second monitor.. there must be a solution via WiFi network

If you have a Wi-Fi with the same lAN with your pc than you can go with Splashtop. Just sign in for the first time using a display on your pc and keep start with system on and you are done. Just turn on your pc connect your nexus with the Wi-Fi and connect.you can also use the touch. Last of all its free in the play store.

Got chrome cast and I'm loving it. When I'm not using it the white light just stays on. Is there a way to turn it off other than unplugging it? Does this thing shut off after a certain amount of time of not being in use like a sleep mode of some sort. Are you guys just leaving it plugged in the entire time?

Yes I just leave it plugged in. It won't turn off if you leave it plugged in. You always want it on otherwise you wouldn't be able to communicate with it at any time and have it turn on your TV. I don't see any harm in just leaving it on all the time.

I don't have the ability to turn on the TV since my TV is about 6 years old. I am just afraid of it burning out or breaking if I leave it on 24/7. Just wasn't sure what everyone else was doing. Wish it went to some sort of low power sleep mode or something once it noticed that it wasn't using that tv's input.

leaving it in and on at all times is fine. It doesnt actually work until you send it commands so you wont be overworking it by just letting it stay on. As for the turning on the tv, its a matter of giving the thing power. Your tv may not give it power through the usb port *assuming its where you power it from*. If you power it through a outlet it should turn on when you send a command and the tv is off.

I would like to see a bigger screen with auto dim and a couple more buttons on the sides. The screen could have gone all the way to the edge of the glass but they put that stupid silver stuff around the screen. Also i wouldn't mind if it was a bit wider. Not any taller tho.

Silly to have to hook it up this way every night, and I have seen where the cradles of others have been destroyed, and Samsung still does not have them for sale to us. They are rumored to be "on backorder" now and they claim restocking within 2 weeks, so put in a Backorder request now if you want an extra.

I am confident the designers can find a way to add it without bulk. Look at how thin the Note 3 is with everything that it has inside of it. Second gen is always better and usually sleaker, so we will see next Spring with any luck. For now though I do love both the Gear and the Note 3, but the category title did say "Wish List".

I have not shut it off since the day I got it....That was sometime before Christmas.
I do notice it reboots itself once a day around 2am though.
My chromecast is powered by the USB port of my TV. So everytime I turn off my TV, the chromecast shuts down and boots when I start my TV.

Somewhere close to 3 months now, except for short reboots.
I'm one of those guys that believes there's more stress powering something up from cold than to keep it running. Of course I also have a nontrivial electricity bill. :\

Do you think there's any of this "stress" being added as the chromecast is running and maintaining a connection to your router and talking to the internet for all the hours you're not using it?
Mine is powered by the TV too and shuts off when it's off. This is useful when I'm switching Netflix regions on NetProtect, as rebooting the stick is as easy as power cycling the TV.

Nah. Chromecast 'chatters' far less than your phone/tablet does, as it doesn't have much in the way of notifications, etc.
I would assume it just polls for firmware upgrades periodically, and maybe downloads new display images.

It could even be the expiration of the DHCP releasing and renewing for all I know...My Guess is it doesn't just renew it reboots to do it.
Just noticed it because of the CEC protocol my Switcher supports, I have noticed it switching after rebooting while I was watching TV which is on the same Switcher....
The reboots definitely happen.. My HDMI switch automatically switches to any device that turns on or powercycles. If I happen to be watching another source at the time, at 2AM my HDMI switch will jump over to the Chromecast just in time to see the Chromecast booting up.
If it is actively being used it does not do this.
Good confirmations. That explains why my LED was blinking (as it does shortly before reconnecting) early one morning...
I don't see any switcher happen on reboot, but my TV doesn't auto-switch when a new input is detected, though it does obey CEC and switch when casting.
I have to unplug when not in use, and even when it's in use, tv screen flashes trying to change HDMI inputs.

That shouldn't happen unless your TV has HDMI-CEC problems or your HDMI port/cable connection is bad.
Try switching HDMI ports.
If that doesn't help, try turning off HDMI CEC control (aka Bravia Sync, LG Simplink, Samsung Anynet+, Panasonic Viera Link) and see if the problem continues to occur.
