[Q] Internal and external memory cleared, options for data recovery? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Somehow during the day my XZ managed to wipe the internal and external storage partitions (the partitions that show up on USB and are readable and writeable without root access).
All my media including videos, photos and music are now gone. Apps and app data seem to still be fine, leading me to believe that somehow the system partition was left untouched.
I know I can easily try to recover the Micro SD card's data by using a card reader and such, but is there any way I can recover the internal partition without rooting my phone?
Thanks

[Q] Half of internal memory missing

So I bricked my phone and ended up having to FXZ to the OTA JB update. Once I did I found that the internal memory just isnt there. There is still 4GB for the apps but no storage and backup will not work because it can not find internal storage. It also will not show up on my computer like normal. How do I get it to show back up?
thecodydavis was able to format his internal storage, after so many reboots, the phone ask him to reformat the storage space. And I believe reformat it will lose all the data in the storage, but you will have internal storage back.

I have the same problem except I need to recover the data. I am still trying to make an image of /dev/block/mmcblk1p26 (storage memory block) and hopefully data recovery tool works on the image.
Thanks! Pretty much what happened! Problem solved!

[Q] Formatting internal "SD" storage

My internal SD storage has become corrupted and I no longer have read or delete access to many files. I wish I could restore some of those files but at this point, I just want to get access back to my storage.
I can't change permissions, unfortunately, so I will just have to reformat it. The issue is that I know formatting the SD card from the recovery on some phones can cause the phone to brick. Does anyone here know if TWRP's option is safe on these phones?

[Q] Help!

I am not sure where to post or anything, new here. Rooted, unlocked bootloader, CWM flashed to AOSB latest for atrix hd. everything is great EXCEPT my internal storage is now half the size it was before. 8Gb does not equal 4.93Gb Not sleeping at all so I will be here all night
WHAT DO?
My assumption is you didn't format the internal sd when you went from stock to anything 4.2 and over. 4.2+ roms have support for multiple users and store the sd data in a slightly different location than 4.1 and earlier. Before stuff was stored at /data/media, with 4.2+ roms it's /data/media/0 for the first/default user. I had the same issue with my first 4.2 rom.
First, if necessary, backup any non app data from the internal sd (skip any app cache, just get important files like downloads, music, etc)*
Using Philz CWM, set the internal sd location to /data/media (it'll prompt for a reboot, do it)
Format the internal sd
set the internal sd location to /data/media/0 (do the reboot again)
Format the internal sd
Restore anything backed up
That's it.
I recommend using the internal sd as little as possible and sticking with the external sd as much as possible. It shares the same partition with apps and app data, so anything on the internal sd is less space for apps.
Unrelated, but technically we could us a 32GB sdcard for /data and the internal sd while using the actual /data partition as the external sd. It would just require a bit of fstab trickery and some init script editing....and be a bit slower when launching apps, but we'd have a heck of a lot more space....not sure if it could be done in a universal way or on a per rom basis.

Changing partition table ?

Hello Guys !
The internal SD card partition is ****ed up and it shows as "unmounted".
I tried a lot of things, including connecting the phone to computer and formating the damn internal storage, but when i plug the USB cable, the phone says that don't have SD card and don't allow full access or Mass Storage.
I tried some programs and file explorers who claimed that can format partitions. No one of them did works.
I tried from the settings of the device to format the internal storage, but i can't change or touch anything, because it shows the internal storage as "unmounted".
I flash it to the stock rom but in the process of flashing, it don't even touch anything in the partition table and after the flashing, the internal SD card is still "unmounted".
Is there any program, tool, way to repartition the partition table on the device ?
I have searched for that in google and i didn't find anything of that sort for Xperia X8.
My other phone, LG Optimus 2X for example, it have AIO toolkit and from there i can change his partition table as i want.
I doubt in that i can't do the same on Xperia X8.
What can i do in this case ?
By "Internal SD card partition" do you mean the Data partition?
Yes.
Are you sure? Does your phone boot? Are you able to install apps?
I mean... that partition where the other data like music, videos, files for apps are stored in there or the partition that file managers sees.
And now this partition is broken and unmounted. The phone show stupid errors everywhere, of the type of "Put your SD card to make photos" or "No SD card" in every app that store data...Now i can't do nothing, i can't even transfer one song and set it as default rington.
But the phone starts up successfully and i have no problem with installing apps from the old "Android Market".
Then that would be your Externel MicroSD Card. If you take the back cover off your phone it should be in the top right corner.
Try taking it out and using an MicroSD card adapter to connect it to your pc and format it.
Or use an app called "AParted" from the Play Store to format your MicroSD Card(Root access required).
No. The phone don't have inserted SD card. I am talking about the "internal SD card". As far as i know, the partition that the file managers sees is the partition left for free data storage, and that is not the whole memory, there is another partition that is hidden and is for the system files for android.
So, the phone boots up and "works" but i need to make repartitioning, but i don't know how to do it on this phone and what is the procedure if there is a way.

Click to collapse
The phone has 2 main partitions one is System(For OS related files and folders) and the other one is Data(For Apps and App Data), No File Manager can see whats in them(Unless you have Root Access). The only thing that would be visible to your File Manager would be whats in your MicroSD Card. If you don't have a MicroSD Card you will not be able to save any pictures or videos or any thing like that(Just like any other Android Phone with a MicroSD Card Slot)
So, this phone uses the whole internal memory for the system ? And its required to put a microSD card to be able to use the phone ?
All my android phones has a partition for free storage and i am suprised of that i can't storage anything without SD card.
This Phone only has 250MB of Internal Storage and it uses about 128MB for System. That leaves you with around 122MB to install Apps. The Phone is 100% Usable without a MicroSD Card, the only thing you will not be able to do is Save any type of External File(Video. Audio, ect.)

Cannot see contents of 'Internal' SD card with 22GB of data

I am in the process of backing up a Moto G (2014) but have come across this issue when trying to backup data that is apparently on the SD card. It reads as ~22GB out of ~29GB (32GB SanDisk) but the only files that are shown in the Android settings menu are Apps and Cached Data. I can't recover this other than through the phone as it is formatted for Internal use.
I am aware of the issue where a PC cannot see this data, my issue is where the phone itself doesn't show the data. I don't want to go ahead and format as 22GB is a lot of data.
What I have done so far:
I have followed the suggested fixes for the PC specific issue (clear data/cache of External Storage and Media Storage system apps and wipe cache partition). No assistance.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Phone is locked, stock, unrooted, 6.0.
