I am in the process of backing up a Moto G (2014) but have come across this issue when trying to backup data that is apparently on the SD card. It reads as ~22GB out of ~29GB (32GB SanDisk) but the only files that are shown in the Android settings menu are Apps and Cached Data. I can't recover this other than through the phone as it is formatted for Internal use.
I am aware of the issue where a PC cannot see this data, my issue is where the phone itself doesn't show the data. I don't want to go ahead and format as 22GB is a lot of data.
What I have done so far:
I have followed the suggested fixes for the PC specific issue (clear data/cache of External Storage and Media Storage system apps and wipe cache partition). No assistance.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Phone is locked, stock, unrooted, 6.0.

I have a quick question. I am using aps2sd on the latest cyanagen rom. I used the rom manager pro app to start my aps2sd partition. I know my aps2sd is working properly cause all my apps are on my sd card, and my partition size drops after I install a new app. My question is, why is my phone internal storage still dropping? I can clear the cache for tunny browser and the default browser and it goes back up. Am I being OCD about the internal storage, or is there a way to store the cache on the SD card also? Any advice?
Thanks,
Im not an expert, but the internal storage is also shared by the OS and all related caches, so yes, you probably are being OCD
So I bricked my phone and ended up having to FXZ to the OTA JB update. Once I did I found that the internal memory just isnt there. There is still 4GB for the apps but no storage and backup will not work because it can not find internal storage. It also will not show up on my computer like normal. How do I get it to show back up?
thecodydavis was able to format his internal storage, after so many reboots, the phone ask him to reformat the storage space. And I believe reformat it will lose all the data in the storage, but you will have internal storage back.

I have the same problem except I need to recover the data. I am still trying to make an image of /dev/block/mmcblk1p26 (storage memory block) and hopefully data recovery tool works on the image.
Thanks! Pretty much what happened! Problem solved!
Hi,
I'm unable to access some apps moved to my external SD. I think the card is corrupt, what will happen if i format it? will i loose my app data that i moved? will i loose my saved game states? please note that i'm unable to write files to external SD even via a USB - PC connection! but i can read data ( watch videos ) on external SD, no write protect in the card. Tried reboot, dust the card and put back in.
Also uninstalling apps installed on phone memory doesn't clear space, i'm running out of space on my phone memory too :|
And if i do factory reset, does the firmware also get reset to stock ROM? Please help!
No root, stock room.

before you format the sd card make sure you have ticked the keep backup of this device option in backup settings. This is save all your app data on google servers and when you reinstall the same app the data will be retained.
factory reset will delete all the apps that you have installed and will make your phone as fresh as new. you will not loose any ota firmware updates of rom.
Somehow during the day my XZ managed to wipe the internal and external storage partitions (the partitions that show up on USB and are readable and writeable without root access).
All my media including videos, photos and music are now gone. Apps and app data seem to still be fine, leading me to believe that somehow the system partition was left untouched.
I know I can easily try to recover the Micro SD card's data by using a card reader and such, but is there any way I can recover the internal partition without rooting my phone?
Thanks
I used to have a phone with external SD card. There I would store all kinds of android tools, backups, usefull apps etc.
That I thought was quite handy after tinkering too much and I had to do a complete wipe.
Is there a way to store those kinds of data, and keep them on the phone, after a complete wipe, without an external
SD card? It's a bit of a hassle to copy these data to the phone every time I do a complete wipe.
Any suggestions? Am I missing something?
Don't wipe the internal storage (/data/media). This is the storage where all the userdata is saved.
Another option would be changing the partitions, but that may be somewhat difficult/impossible.
