Question about unbricking - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to instal CM rom on Galaxy S using clockworkrecovery. Unfortunately, after installation and reboot, the phone gets stuck on CyanogenMod boot screen, then reboots again.
I understand I will need to get USB jig (no key combination, or usb cable trick worked).
Does that mean I will lose all my data on the internal SD card, like photos and TitanumBackup files?

You probably didn't install the CM exactly as described in the guide (opening post) for your device. Usually, it requires full wipe: wipe data/factory reset, wiping cache and wiping dalvik cache (in CWM recovery under "advanced"). Right after that you can install the CM zip, and after tge CM you should also install gapps for that CM version as apps for another android version won't be compatible. As you didn't write which CM you flash, I can not tell you which gapps do you need. If you can reach your CWM recovery now, just do as described and you will obtain the CM system.
You shouldn't lose your photos that way. If you want to install CM10.2 build, wait for next nightly as the nightlies between 24 and 26 Aug could format the internal SD, that is now sold and will be OK in the nightly build 27th and onwards.
After booting in your new CM system don't ever try to restore apps made with Titanium backup in another ROMs. It isn't compatible anymore with the CM. Install the apps simply again downloading them from play store.

If I could get into recovery mode, or even download mode, I wouldn't need USB jig (and I am still not even sure that will help).
The rom I was installing was cm-9.1.0-galaxysmtd.zip
I formatted system, boot, and I think everything else except for the sdcard.
Now the phone is stuck on CyanogenMod logo, which appears just after Galaxy S logo. Then it waits 10 seconds, and reboots again.
Is the phone and/or data on the sdcard gone?

Just flash the CM 9 ROM twice, it will bootup, so long as you did not format SDcard, everything in it will be there

Thanks, but I don't think we understand each other.
It is impossible to enter recovery or download mode. Maybe USB Jig will let me enter download mode.
The question is - when I recover the phone using Odin in download mode (I think I need to select 'repartitioning' option?), will it erase internal sdcard?

Don't do it, it will screw up your phone! Don't EVER check re-partition if you don't flash also PIT file for your device!

Can you or can you not enter download mode with 3-buttons combo?

Try this:
remove the battery
keep power button pressed for about 30sec without battery
use 3-button combo for recovery mode and insert battery again while all three buttons are pressed (acrobatic thing)
Is recovery mode accessible again?
BTW you will not lose your data (photos) unless you format SD card. Let us see how to unbrick your device now as first. If you didn't backup your data, you must live with possible loss if it happens.
One more thing: please quote my text if you want me to answer (or anybody else) or reply the post directly on the button "reply" just beyond because otherwise we don't get any notification so it was pure luck that I've found your new post here by browsing....

OK, then buy a jig for i9000 on eBay (it costs less than $2) and connect it according to the manual (I think the device must be turned off and after connecting it, you must wait for about 10sec until the download mode appears)
One important detail, but important nevertheless: is there still some juice in your battery? You must be sure of that, because maybe only battery is empty. Try to charge it by some friend who has the same telephone.
Let know later whats's up. Just have some patience now, mate.

Yes, battery is full. When I turn it on, I can see "Vibrant Samsung" logo, and shortly after "Galasy S syanogenmod" logo. Then it shuts down, and turns on again.

Wait a second, mate: Samsung Vibrant is SGH-T959 and we are talking about GT-i9000
Are you absolutely sure you have SGH-T959 and did you try to flash on it some build for GT-i9000 maybe? It is a non-excuse mistake and you will be lucky if anything revives your Samsung Vibrant now....

Your main concern seems to be with regards to data, now it all depends on which data, for instance flashing with or without partitioning, will only erase/change the Android folder on your SD card, so if your concern is with regards to app data, game data , sms, contacts, call log etc that will be gone by flashing.
Your camera images, music, video will not be touched and whatever other folders in your SD card will remain as is, if you had earlier CWM backup etc will be intact.
If you had debugging ON, and IF your phone can still power ON, you should try ADB push/pull to recover whatever you want first before flashing. meaning you can recover sms, phone contacts etc. so try powering ON your phone and connecting USB cable to PC while Odin3 is running on your PC. IF Odion3 detects, than you can try ADB method.

Sounds bad....
I think it is really the best you can do to try it with the jig now.
So you should get your device into the download mode. After that, we can say you're on safe side again. I would save now battery juice and wait until the jig is there.... (or make one yourself, it's easy and there are video tutorials how to do it)

Use LGmobile update tool to reflash stock firmware.
Things you need:
1) LG mobile update tool
2) Phone USB cable
3) Phone IMEI number. You can find it under the phone's battery.
Things to do:
1) Start LG mobile update tool and install the LG P970 USB drivers.
2) Remove the phone battery
3) Hold the Up button and plug in the USB to your phone.
4) Click 'Customer Support' and choose recovery phone. From there, it will ask
you for your phone's IMEI number. Follow the instructions from the tool.
After you are done, repeat what you have done before.
As for step 6. The install ROM from SD card option is found the ROM manager app that you have installed.
Hope it helps
If you have successfully installed CWM recovery 4 or higher, then just press the volume down key while turning on your phone. You should be able to go in recovery mode again which will allow you to install zip from SD card.

You can press the thanks button at my post for giving information but actual credit for a to the developers around here who tried hard to give best with our beloved optimus black. Since our phone doesn't have any hard home button like Samsung 's galaxy phone it was quite good that we can use recovery mode by volume and power buttons.
Also to say, if you plug charger and then turn on your phone and in between you take out the battery from phone, it wil also take you into recovery mode!

Well, i didn't say it works in CM. The OP seems to flashing CM for the first time. And if stock rom is flashed with this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1206175 .. well, in NOVA rom it goes in recovery mode with power+volume down. But you are right, it is a ROM feature, it's not related universally to the CWM itself. So i am sorry for not explaining this in my post.

I am not an active developer, but that ain't synonymous with noob.
. If you would have known me from other forums, you wouldn't have said as such. But anyways, if you were offended with what i wrote ( i had no intention of that... i didn't even knew you ! ) and if even offended somehow now (even with my explaining post ) .. i would suggest we talk on PM and don't make useless heat over this thread.

You have to enter your IMEI number AND change the phone model, maybe even add the S/N number and then everything should work just fine.

Thanks for the info. If I follow this procedure, will all the factory installed software (Google Play, Messaging, Contacts, Music Play, Gallery, etc.) disappear?
Nope.
But once u r Rooted u can get rid of bloat that u don't want...through Titanium Backup Pro, etc.
Here is the link to the Corn Kernel thread...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18233847&postcount=1
Here is Odin if u need it... View attachment 1038976
Download and then open Odin, select the PDA slot, navigate to the .tar 7.0A Corn Kernel that u downloaded to ur pc and select it, connect usb end of ur cable to the pc, put ur phone in download mode, connect micro usb end to ur phone, after Odin recognizes it hit the Start.
Takes less than 10 seconds to flash the kernel.
Disconnect after the Pass, which indicates a successful flash. Remove the cable from ur phone. Reboot into the CWM Recovery. Go to "Reformatting, tweaks and more". Goto "Install Root / Extras". Then select "Install Superuser and Busybox (root)". Reboot.
Rooted and good to go.

Thanks again for the info. I finally got around to rooting my phone, and everything went perfectly. I used Corn Kernel 7.06.
There are instructions here (androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/493850-guide-rooting-adding-cwm-recovery-2-3-5-corn-kernel.html) which detail the same method as you recommended. They are very detailed, and include screen shots.
For future readers, you can use the utility in my signature to help you do the same thing.
thanks!
Thank you for putting this script together. I'm new to all this, and it helped me feel more confident trying this out. It all worked fine until the end, when the batch script was saying I should be selecting items from the recovery mode menu. My phone had rebooted into normal mode. I tried to run the script again, and the phone was not recognized, and then became locked into downloading mode. I though I had killed it. After trying many other things, I pushed the buttons to manually enter recovery mode and it turned off, after which I could turn the phone on again, at least. There's no superuser app, so I guess the root wasn't successful, but on startup the screen does say something about the corn kernel, so something was loaded. I'm not sure what to do at this point, except maybe just leave it alone since it seems to be working. If there's a final step that would complete the process, I'd be glad to know it.

To complete your root, go in recovery -> advance and root.
If you're uncertain if you're rooted, try to run a app like Titanium Backup, which requires root.

I assume your priority is to get your laptop working again. If you can get it to boot at all or boot into safe mode, I would probably do a "System Restore" on it. That may sound a little scary, but I have system restored various computers quite a few times without problems. A system restore should not be done lightly, but it sounds like your laptop is kind of trashed. A system restore does not take very long, and is fairly easy:
* Close all programs
* Click Start, then Control Panel, then System (see below)
* Click "Advanced System Settings"
* Click "System Protection"
* Click "System Restore"
* You may see a "Recommended Restore". You may see a list of restore points.
* Select the most recent restore point (that should be prior to your SuperOneClick install)
* You can click "Scan for affected Programs" if you want. SuperOneClick should be among those that will be deleted
* Click "Next" to restore the computer
* If you installed any other programs after the restore point, you will have to re-install them
* Your documents and data should not be affected
After starting the system restore, you may have to wait 5 or 10 minutes. Do not shut the computer off, or do anything else on the computer. Let it run. The computer will run, and re-boot. When it re-boots, Windows should have restored it to the same condition as before it got messed up.
Depending on how your computer is set up, the System launch Icon may not be directly on your control panel display. You might have to drill down to get it.
You can set up system restore points manually, and it is a good idea to do that before you install any program that you may have any doubts about. Some programs automatically set up a system restore point when you install them, but many do not.
Good luck, and let me know how you make out.

For some reason I'm not finding this anywhere else; so...I used odin and followed the steps exactly. I got everything done, had my phone in download mode and everything, but for some reason...Odin doesn't pass my flash???
I'm a massive noob, so I'm sure I sound stupid right now but trail and error is how one learns, however I've done this trial and error quite a few times now and nothings working for me.
I've tried SuperOneClick and it froze.
I have an LG Escape 4.0.4
Can you maybe tell me what I can do to root my device because I'm so lost it's just ridiculous.

I don't have any idea what I'm supposed to be doing here so I guess if you want to get technical, I suppose that was the case, yes.
I searched how to root my android device and this is what I was reading all over google so I just did what it said.
Apparently that was wrong, which is why I'm here.
Care to remedy my situation? You know more than I do and I'd appreciate the help.
Don't think there is a forum for the LG Escape but a quick search turned up this...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33752762&postcount=1. It is a start for ya. Now the rest u will have to do on ur own. I suggest a lot of reading and understanding before u do stuff and possibly make ur phone into a paperweight.
There is a lot of helpful info here on xda. Just take time to read and comprehend.

This trial and error method will lead sooner or later to permanent damage to your LG phone. Odin software and Corn kernel are for Samsung phones only.

[GUIDE] What to do if my phone doesn't turn on?

I posted this thread because I couldn't find a similar one and I thought would be useful. I would keep adding on to this when I find new information.
Disclaimer: This list is NOT exhaustive and there might be other ways to unbrick your phone. Also, I cannot guarantee that these methods would work for you.
With android around for so long, there are many developers out there who are constantly trying to get "more" out of their devices. However, one constant problem about tweaking our devices is that we have a chance of "Bricking" it.
So the most common question is:
What do I do when I brick my phone?
Before we start, let me explain what is a brick, and when would a brick happen.
What is a brick?
Altering the operating system of your phone in a way that causes the mobile device to become unusable results in a bricked, or inoperable phone. Bricking of phone can be done by a Hacker and via one or more update.

Examples of an error when booting:
1. Phone doesn't turn on
2. Phone turns on, but stuck at the boot screen
3. Phone turns on, and shows this screen:

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
4. Phone turns on, and shows recovery screen
5. Phone turns on, and shows download mode
6. There are other instances, but the general idea is: If your phone doesn't boot to the home screen, it's an error.
When will I encounter these errors with my phone?
You might encounter errors with your phone when you:
- Root
- Flash any rom without proper wipe
- Flash incompatible kernels
- Interrupt a flashing process
- the list goes on and on...
So now we come to the important part, how do I get my phone to boot up?
There are different solutions to each problem, so please diagnose the problem first, then read on.
If your phone is stuck in a boot loop (stuck at boot screen):
1. Wipe Data and Cache
2. Wipe Dalvik Cache
3. Wipe Battery Stats
4. Reboot
**NOTE: If you didn't have CWM flashed, then just wipe data and cache via stock Samsung Recovery and try rebooting.
5. If the above doesn't work, flash a new rom.
If your phone can't get into recovery,
Try to go into download mode (holding Vol Down + Home + Power buttons).
Download mode looks like this:
If you could get into download mode, or you're already in download mode when you boot your phone, flash a stock rom through ODIN. The detailed guide can be found here:
http://droidangel.blogspot.sg/2011/08/samsung-galaxy-mini-s5570xxkpk-android.html
A list of stock roms and downloads can be found here:
http://yagyagaire.blogspot.sg/2012/01/official-samsung-firmwares.html#.UIELBE3MiSo
**Note: When you boot up your phone and it shows this screen, it's another form of download mode. All you have to do is to flash stock rom via ODIN, with the guide above this:
If you couldn't get into download mode or recovery mode, read on...
Let me warn you first, at this point, your phone is probably bricked.
So... What if my phone doesn't get into download/recovery mode?
1. Try doing a USB jig.
2. Try using RIFF JTAG.
USB Jig
To do this, you gotta have a device that looks like this:
You could buy one on eBay or Amazon, or simply go to the neighbourhood phone repair shop and borrow one. Or, you could lend one from someone near you, to find a list of people near you who have USB jig and are willing to lend, click here.
Alternatively, you could make a home-made one by following this guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKRrTZayRxU
**Note: The title states Galasy S II but it's proven to be working on our device too.
To do a USB jig, follow this guide:

RIFF JTAG
Go to this website and follow instuctions:
http://www.jtagbox.com/jtag-news/ri...-mini-gts5570i-unbrick-boot-repair-supported/
If all else fails, you can only send your phone to Samsung Repair, and remember: Play Dumb!
Don't mention anything about rooting, flashing, odin, etc. Don't say you dropped it in water either, your warranty doesn't cover accidental damage. Just tell them your phone suddenly became like that...
Special Cases:
Case #1
Your phone shows a black screen when you turn it on, but ODIN detects it. When you try flashing stock rom, it gets stuck at "setup connection...".
Solution: Your phone is bricked. Do a USB jig by following the method above. It might help you, but not 100%.
Case #2
Your phone shows a whitish screen, and ODIN detects it.
Solution: This is probably caused by a bad flash, or you flashed a rom that isn't intended for your phone. Just flash the correct stock rom via ODIN it would work (not for all cases).
If the above fails, you could reply to this post or PM me for help.

Yes they would be able to tell. Our devices have a bin counter that increases every time u flash a custom rom or something like that. However, some Service Centres wouldn't bother to check and then they would just change the motherboard for you.

Play dumb and tell them you don't know anything about whatever they are saying. Usually they won't check they'll just ask you if you dropped it in water (say no to that your warranty doesn't cover accidental damage). If they really ask, just say u don't know whats a bin counter and u've been using stock rom all along lol. That's what I did once and it worked.

Hi Thanks for the article. My phone is in strange mode. It can enter into download mode but when I try to boot or try to enter in recovery mode it keeps on flashing samsung logo and does not proceed. The samsung logo just comes and goes and it keeps on. There is currently no way to go to home screen or go to recovery mode. Samsung service center people said motherboard is gone. I think if motherboard would have gone my phone would never enter into download mode. Can you help me?
If your phone start in downloading mode and ODIN detects it flash a stock rom trought Odin and it should work. In the first post you will find the guide for flashing stocks rom.

Did your phone get stuck on bootscreen after installing stock-rom via odin? or after installing custom-rom via CWM recovery? or get stuck when you are installing stock-rom via odin (I mean you can't finish installing stock-rom via odin) ?
=================================================================
First Case =
If your phone get stuck on bootscreen after installing stock-rom via odin, please try to pull out your battery for about 15 minutes..
after 15 minutes, put your battery in and TURN ON your phone..
If it still get stuck on bootscreen, try to boot into recovery mode (by pressing power+home button)..
make FULL WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe chace + wipe dalvik chace)..
then reboot system now..
If it still get stuck, you can try to flash it AGAIN via ODIN..
========================================
Second Case =
If your phone get stuck on bootscreen after installing custom-rom via CWM recovery, please try to pull out your battery for about 15 minutes..
after 15 minutes, put your battery in and TURN ON your phone..
If it still get stuck on bootscreen, try to boot into recovery mode (by pressing power+home button)..
make FULL WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe chace + wipe dalvik chace)..
then reboot system now..
If it still get stuck, you can try to install your custom-rom AGAIN via CWM recovery..
boot into recovery and make FULL WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe chace + wipe dalvik chace)..
choose zip from sd card (make sure that you put the custom-rom file zip in sd-card directory /sdcard/here),
install and wait until finish and then reboot system now..
If you still get stuck, try to install your custom-rom AGAIN via CWM recovery, but IN THIS TIME you must make full wipe twice, BEFORE and AFTER installing custom-rom and then reboot system now..
- reboot into CWM recovery
- make full wipe
- choose zip from sd card
- wait until installing finish/complete
- make full wipe again
- reboot system now
========================================
Third Case =
If your phone get stuck when you are installing stock-rom via odin (I mean you can't finish installing stock-rom via odin),
please make sure that :
- your computer did not installed Samsung Kies application, I think it may interfere your installing stock-rom process, so please un-install it first..
- you have installed the right or true Samsung USB driver..
- your micro-usb cable is support for your phone
- your battery phone in 90%
- if your firmware doesn't in one package, make sure that you choose the right file, I mean :
- BOOT = APBOOT_XXX
- PHONE = MODEM_XXX
- PDA = CODE_XXX
- CSC = GTS5570_CSC_XXX
-and don't take off your USB cable untill the installation is complete, "PASS"
I think that's all, it just based on my experience..
i realy need your help with gt-s5570

Nice Guide, thanks :good:

[Q] [I9001] SGS+ bricked/broken

Hey guys,
I own a SGS+ and tried to flash a ROM a few month ago.
Not sure which one it was in particular but it was a 4.1.2 ROM.
Normally it worked pretty well but that time it broke my phone apparently.
So now a few month later I tried to get it to work again.
My phone stucks at the splashscreen, easy said.
It boots till the splash screen and then it's on for about 3-4 minutes I guess and then the screen turns off.
But apparently it still runs because if I try to start it again over the power button it doesn't work.
I have to remove the battery, insert it again and then I can use the power button.
I tried several things and I'm out of information here.
So maybe one of you guys can help me out here?
Thanks for reading!
Try wiping cache an dalvik cache and fix permissions. If that doesn't help do a full wipe and install a new rom. If it still doesn't work, flash a stock rom via odin. Also, which recovery are you using?

Well I used at first CWM 6.0.1.2 then switched to 6.0.2.8, then 6.0.3.2, then 6.0.3.6 and then TWRP 2.4.0.0 and TWRP 2.6.0.0.
I tried those who should be for the bricked phones.
Try to flash a new kernel, then flash a new ROM. You should be able to get into download mode...

..
That's not the problem.
I can get into download mode, I could get into download mode all the time.
I don't think you got my problem right:
My phone stucks at the splash screen.
Doesn't turn off only screen turns off but the phone is still running.
I can only reboot if I take the battery out.
So it boots up to the splashscreen and stucks.
I flashed a few new roms and nothing worked.
If you can get into download mode, try flahing a stock rom via odin.

1.Remove your battery.
2.Reinsert battery.
3.Put in download mode.
4.Flash stock rom.
5.Profit!

I tried that one too, no success.
The phone still stucks in the splashscreen, nothing changed.

Download BroodRom(Not ics or jb just the old GB edition) it's a lifesaver.
1.Go to recovery.
2.Format EVERYTHING(data, cache, dalvik AND system.)
3.Download mode
4.Flash broodrom with Odin.
That should work!

Not really, still the same.
My phone still stucks in splashscreen.
Does nobody else know a solution?
I can flash normal, go to download mode easily and everything else too.
It just stucks in the splashscreen.
Follow my tutorial about how to flash back to stock. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44047896&postcount=2

Maybe you didn't flash appropriate ROM for your device. Read this thread, especially the first post by our forum mate xsensman and try to check if it could be concerning also your device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1890667
Even through I know how to flash, I tried the two links from the guys above and tried them.
Again nothing happened either.
Flashing was okay, everything was fine.
Unfortunately the phone still stucks in splashscreen.
No one else knows what I could do?
verify serial No

Mate, something is strange there. With splashscreen you mean bootloop, right? So you see the logo, but the phone doesn't really loads the Android?
OK, here we go: please remove the battery and write down your serial No and google a bit is it really i9001? There are about 20 different types of SGS so just to make sure which model do you have.
That bootloop can happen for several reasons, but I would assume that in your case it happens either for:
bootloader isn't working properly
you haven't flashed the proper ROM for your device.
I suspect very strongly the bootloader, so re-flashing the bootloader via Odin, theoretically, should revive your phone. Just check (as written above) do you REALLY have i9001, (as otherwise -if not- you could brick it with the bootloader for i9001):
First post, "5. Follow the instruction" (all files there)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32144697
I'm 100% sure that I have a real i9001, not a special edition or something like that.
And I flashed before it got broken a few month and the roms worked just fine.
Well but then it broke somehow.
I just see that my phone with the CWM-Recovery can't format /data and hangs.
Can't do anything unless I remove the battery and boot up again.
Could this be a hint for you guys?

Did you flash the bootloader as I've wrote you in my previous post?

I have no idea what may that be, but are you sure your phone is bricked?
Have you tried to use normal TWRP 2.6 instead of that one for bricked phones?
I don't know, but maybe this helps:
Guide: How to Recover from a bootloop http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660596
@tetakpatak: Yes, I did it like the post "suggested".
@3L4CK_5C0RP10N: No, I'm actually not sure, that's why I wrote "bricked/broken".
I'm not the best guy at those things as you can guess.
No, I didn't tried the normal one, gonna try it now, atleast it's worth trying.
I read the post you linked me here and tried those things, unfortunately nothing happened.
Even tried it with ADB, also no solution found there.
But thanks already for the work guys!
suggest you try the following:-
1) power it down, remove battery, remove SIM card and Ext SD card and press and hold your power button for at least 30 seconds to a min, before reinserting battery and entering CWM recovery
2) In CWM recovery, enter Mounts and Storage and Format every partition, that can be formatted, repeat it twice ( You will lose all your data ) meaning you will be trying to get a clean environment for a fresh start. Do not reboot but pull out battery, press power for a few seconds and insert battery.
If you need your data, in mounts and storage, enter usb storage, here with usb connected to PC you can copy your entiere internal SDcard to PC, for salvage later.
3) get into Download mode, to flash the oldest i9000 Stock ROM 2.3.3 with AriesVe.ops using Odin 4.43 ( with ops ticked) How to flash follow this
download ROM from here

[Q] Can I recover i9000 using Clockworkmod?

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S i9000 which fails to boot - it just between the Galaxy S logo and a blank screen every few seconds.
I can get into both Download mode and recover mode. Some time ago I rooted this phone and installed Gingerbread so I could unlock it, and it looks like I also installed ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5 , that's what comes up when I boot into recovery mode.
Unfortunately I don't have any saved backups that I can attempt to restore from.
Is it possible that I can load something onto the sdcard using a PC and then use the 'apply update from sdcard' or 'install zip from sdcard' option to get the phone back to life? If someone can point me to some instructions to read, that would be very helpful.
Hi,
when you can get into CWM-Recovery you can push ZIPs etc. to your phone ...
In the CWM-Recovery you have to mount the internal SD...that should be all i think...

Thanks.
I tried to download the version of Odin and the ROM from that first link, but it seems to be impossible without agreeing to install a whole bunch of malware/crapware such as iLivid, Torch and a ton of worthless browser extensions.
Is it possible to get this stuff from somewhere else which isn't quite so intrusive?
Kind regards,
Pete
When you try the first link of xsenman in the thread you can find the version for odin to download i think without downloading any malware and so on ...

the trick is to click only the free download button again and again till your download begins, you will never be able to download, if you click the other download buttons (they have added all this buttons lately), as free upload sites like this purposely have them to confuse downloaders and take them to all sorts of crapware. Not that I like it myself, but this site allows above 100MB download at one go, compare to media fire which needs to be split up as such uploaded to it. like I said when I uploaded it a year ago, it never had this issues.

It certainly confused me, so it worked
Thanks for your help with this. The solution I found was to download a cyanogen 10.1.3 zip file onto the Micro SD card via my PC, put that into the phone, do a recovery install using 'select zip file' from external_sd .
That allowed me to update the CWM installation, then re-run the installation and boot to the boot loader, so I at least have a working phone. Not sure whether I can live with cyanogenmod, but at least if anyone else searching finds this thread they'll see how it can be resolved without Odin or stock ROMS if CWM is present.
Thanks everyone for your help.
Great. Whne you "can live with CM" you can get it on with CM 10.2 actually as nightly-builds but for me it seems to be very stable ...:good::angel:
