Battery drain when idle? - Moto X Q&A

What type of drain are people getting while phone is not in use?
Last night I dropped from 64% to 54% in 9 hours, despite the fact that better battery stats showed 97% deep sleep for the time period. Seems bad to me. On lots of other phones, overnight drain is in the 2 - 5% range.
Yes, active notifications are disabled while I sleep. I don't even have touchless control set up yet, so it can't be that. I have the same few location services turned on that I always do, and like I said, I usually see 2-5% overnight on other phones, not 10%.
Anybody else?
PS for those of you who want to say who cares, I did this test because I was noticing faster than usual idle drain during the day, too, but sleeping is the best time to get a long chuck of idle time.
Edit: could it be because the phone always has those sensors on waiting to to see if the phone moves to light up the time? Or the double twist for camera sensor always being on?

Get "Better battery stats" or a similar app to see what is running during idle. But to be fair that is just over 1% an hour.....that is not awful whatsoever. The only way you could get any better would be to disable any wifi/data, and those location services.....OR just turn the phone off completely. I've had phones that have had way higher drain on idle than 1.5%.

Like I said in my op, better battery stats showed 97% deep sleep in that time period overnight. And most of my other phones have lost only half as much or so overnight.

thanks porkchop! That much I get I honeslty do, but if my phone is sleeping, and its been three hours since the call took place, why are those the hogs?
Your reading too much into it. It's a percent of a percent and even if your phone has been sleeping for hours it will still show those numbers because that's what had been using the battery the most.
The way its displayed is confusing. If your battery is at 50% and it says the display used 50%. The display has really only used 25% of the battery so far. It doesn't matter if your phone has been asleep after you used it.

And its since the phone has been last unplugged. They aren't really the hogs, its just what has been used in the last how ever long the battery has been off the charger. The display and the phone use way more battery than cell standby and phone idle. now say the battery was at 70% when you took these readings...and left it on sleep til it was 1%, cell standby and phone idle would then be the top percentages.

[Q] Battery Life on Xperia Z. Sucks.

Folks,
Can anyone suggest how much battery life they are getting on their device. Not sure it is a common problem or my device is defective.
It stays on for only 3 to 4 hours and dies, i.e. just a couple of messages and emails (albeit on 100% brightness and NOT on Stamina mode). Is it normal. Brightness to be kept on auto?
If I play video or so, battery goes from 100 to 10% in about 1 hour maximum.
Have juice defender installed. Also a task killer (which kills the background ones and they restart on their own). But not so much help though.
Any suggestions?

Get rid of juice defender, reduce brightness to 75% on usual daily use, and you should get around 4 to 5 hours screen on time, and up to 24 hours standby time.

Xperia z is either having a software or hardware problem
I use a note 10.1 for two months and did gaming all the time with 3g on but it lasted for two days without charging. But the Z cant even handle 15 minutes of gaming. It goes down from 71% to 62% IN 15 MINUTES. I expected the update would fix the problem. But I dont see any difference. I was so curious with the Z. But I doubt that now. Is the fate of Sony going to be that of like Toyota.

On 100% brightness I wouldn't expect much more.
From experience I set my screen brightness to about 25%, which is more than enough for normal use indoors. If I need to use the phone outdoors or in sunlight I'll put the brightness up but it always goes back to 25% when I'm indoors again.
The only sync I have on mine is my Google account, everything else is set to manually refresh only.
On my 3rd day of owning the phone I had 24h+ of use from it, and that's still improving. My battery is on about 60% at the moment after 18 hours. If I turn on Stamina Mode it predicts another 2 days!
However, if I was watching videos at 100% screen brightness, I wouldn't expect much more than an hour or two. Horses for courses.

Your situation is not normal. Maybe the battery life on the Xperia Z sucks. Maybe it's all about managing your apps and stuff - but no. Not that much. Playing video shouldn't drain the battery 90% in an hour. I play streaming video over WiFi for 2 hours a day (boring train ride) and leave WiFi on and Stamina mode off all day. Maybe when I get home at the end of the day the battery is at like 30% and maybe I don't play with the phone much once I get to work - but video kills the battery in an hour? Not if it's hardware accelerated video.
I al sure some people will say "See what is running in the background", but I am not sure you would be able to drain your battery that fast even running like @home stuff.
After a few charge and when the battery is season it will be okay

I always just leave my phone to charge overnight

15-25% overnight battery drain versus 3-4%

According to the Battery thread in this forum, some people experience a high overnight battery drain, and some get a low one.
I am currently a member of the high club. For battery testing, I have most things turned off, like location services and google now. Last night overnight drain (8 hours) took the battery from 76% to 58%... 18%. On my previous phone, the HTC One, the overnight drain would be around 6%.
I am curious about the people who are getting low (~5%) overnight drains. Do they all have Wifi off? What is their secret?! Do tell.

Install better battery stats to monitor what's going on. I think the one night I left it off charge over night I lost maybe 6-8% but I slept for like 10+ hours. This is with google now on, gps on, wifi on.
What i'm testing now that I think will actually improve batt life is having wifi turn off when display is off (unless plugged in). I think I noticed less idle drain at home when I did this but it was temporary. Giving it a shot over a few days now.
I leave wifi on and I get less than 5% drain. Nothing syncs when my screen is off except notification weather pro every two hours and Yahoo weather

Personally I think the X and new droids have idle drain issues. Even when better battery stats shows nearly 100% deep sleep overnight, I still lose 8-10%. In comparison, on my HTC One mini, which is setup EXACTLY the same as my X in terms of installed apps, syncing accounts, running services, etc., I lose only 2-3% overnight. The number of people complaining about the issue seems to confirm it is more widespread than on other recent phones, as do the countless screenshots showing unusually high android OS usage in battery stats.

I honestly believe it will be patched with the Camera.
I'm having the same issue. People are reporting crazy battery stats with like 20+ hours of use 2+ hours of screen on and like 20% battery left. I get MAYBE 12 hours of use and 2 hours of screen on and 20-25% left. My mediaserver is keeping the phone awake for almost an hour+ each day, and without root I can't figure out how to stop it. I always have GPS/Google Now/Bluetooth off, too.
I thought the drain was related to Wifi. But last night WiFi was turned off for the night and I still got 18% battery drain in about 8 hours.
Wifi at home and overnight. I get about 5% drain... however, the wifi at work kills my phones battery with the wlan wakelock.
Maybe there is something going on with the X and certain wifi networks?

Interesting theory but my overnight idle drain was approximately the same on both LTE and WiFi. 10-15%.

How about turning off all radios (flight mode) and observe battery drain at night. Then turning wifi while on flight mode the next night and see the battery drain and so on until you can pin point what causes the most drain.

[Q] 4 hour battery life on heavy non gaming usage

i am getting 4 hours tops of batterylife on my z1
i have maximum brightness auto turned off i have wifi and bluetooth off
i have a live wallpaper
i have skype steam running in the back
it takes 2 hours for it to drop to 50 and 4 hours to 0 from full charge on pretty much full on screen time
is this normal even on that kind of heavy usage
I would recommend using wakelock detector to see what's really soaking up your battery. It's a free application and it's pretty self explanatory. Charge up your phone and use it heavily again and report back to us with your findings through wake lock detector.

I think if you mean with 4 hours onscreen it is normal otherwise it is not.
Use wakelock detector already mentioned
4 hours on screen time with full brightness sounds reasonable. I can play heavy games for about 3,5 to 4 hours with medium display brightness.
Always keep in mind that the display is the biggest power consumer in modern Smartphones.

Actually the battery with its 3000 mAh is gigantic. And I think 4 Hours of heavy usage with full brightness is ok.
20% over night with STAMINA mode is too much though.

really dissapointed in the battery life then
i guess theres no such thing as a full day of usage then
is there any smartphone that can handle that?
Do you actively use your phone all day (screen on all the time)?
With medium usage (WhatsApp, Surfing, Some calls) I can go for at least one, maybe two days.
I slept for 10 hours and my battery drained 9% with wifi and GSM on from full charge. your using the stock charger right? charging faster then recommended will reduce the life of the battery and can cause this kind of issue, but the phone is so new i wouldn't expect that to be the cause. I know the stock charger 1.5A. With a 2A charger it is likely the phone will charge at 2A.
Its probably a software related issue your having, but 20% overnight seems like a lot..

I would something is hitting your phone for wakelocks. 20% over night is a bit high. I know google currents is a know offender so uncheck that if you have it syncing. Try turning off google location access. Turn off gps and nfc. Using you phone at max brightness will always be very draining, leave on on auto unless your outside in daylight or in the car. Facebook is also bad for wakelocks. Any app that is polling for updates will be hard on battery. My experience has been a much improved battery life over my previous devices. On an average work day I leave at 8 and get home at 430, and I usually have 70-75 % by bedtime usually around 30%. I leave most my apps syncing all the time as well. I know the phone is new to you so I would say you might be playing with it more than you normally would.

I suspect that steam / skype will be preventing the phone from ever going to sleep.
I would suggest capping the max frequency of the cpu to quite slow or setting the governer to a conservative level (an app could be forcing the cpu to stay at a high frequency most of the time which will just drain the battery in no time)
However this usually requires a custom kernal or at least root which isn't very well developed on the Z1 yet.
If you can run a wakelock program that also logs the time spent at each cpu speed ... that would help people help you ...
As for any phone being able to handle it, unlikely the battery is relatively large but so is the screen, most phablets have only a fractionally bigger battery.
Only a full blown tablet will get you a much bigger battery that might be able to last you twice as long.
I typically go 3-4 days between charges on the .257 firmware without stamina mode and paired to a smartwatch 2.
I used to get 3 days on the 534 firmware with stamina mode! (i work in an area of very weak signal so i get 25% no signal time over a battery charge)

If you have abnormally hi/low times please post your thoughts on why.
I'm going to take this chance to recommend you use Firefox instead of Chrome for internet browsing. Not sure why but Chrome just uses a lot of power. I frequently see 30% ratings on the battery usage stats screen.
Switching to Firefox and unless I go above 6 or so tabs I'm almost always ~half Chrome's power usage. So, 15-20% max usually.
conclusion:
75% of users get >3.5h screen on time.
3.5 hours with Dalvik.
Switched to ART Saturday night and first day on Sunday and again today was pushing 4 hours SOT, so a slight improvement. Have to wait and see if it improves over time as I have not had any FC's with any of the apps I use so I'll keep running ART to see if that helps.
Google Now is on, screen set at 10% (auto way too aggressive), Location set to Mode - Battery Saving (I know if I switched to Device Only that could help, but then Google Now location based cards don't work) so leaving it on for now.
This is pretty hard to reply on just because I never let my phone get down to 1% to have a gauge of SOT. Do I partake in the poll if I'm at 40% at the end of my day with 2h54min SOT?

While I'm curious where this goes I urge ppl. not to take results as reference as user patterns differ wildly. Syncing, Now!, BT, data on/off, 2G or 3G or LTE, GPS or network location, apps, brightness, sleep time all can make a difference in SoT.
I noticed that I'm getting more battery drain when I set location to battery saving mode. I noticed when I was on battery saving mode that it was causing Google services to run much longer.
I have all connections on. Bluetooth, push services, exact location, location reporting, Google now, screen brightness on auto. I get roughly 3-4 hrs of SOT.

Location reporting on (battery saving mode), GNow off

I Always have LTE off unless i'm tethering, HSPA+ is fast enough for phone use. Screen is always below 50%, google now off, location at battery saving. all sync is set to off/manual. wifi/bt almost always on. I do about 1.5 hours of a2dp streaming per day.
With all of those conditions I have seen 4-4.5 hours over a 2 day discharge cycle. I could probably get another hour if I used my phone over the course of 1 day instead of 2.
3.5 hours average per day/charge with an hour of games. 4.5 hours with no games.
Wifi+Data, 30% brightness Google Now on, most Google sync off, GPS: battery saving.
5.5-6.5 hours on mobile moderate use and every sensor on. Only change is manual 25-30% brightness. This phone is multiples brighter than anything I've used. If it had lower minimums I would keep in on auto. The n7 is the same way.

These results are pretty encouraging imo. I'll be coming from an HTC Rezound that usually gets around 2 hrs of SOT, so it looks like this will most likely be an improvement according to the poll. I'd love an extra hour to an hour and a half of SOT compared to what I usually get
Consider this a bump I guess, since I can't actually vote yet. Just getting more and more excited cause I just got my shipping notification today.
