[TUTORIAL] Get SUPER_LONG battery life with Trickster Mod (6 hours SOT) - Nexus 4 General

Hello!
I was investigating ondemand governor for increasing my battery life and I discovered that our Nexus can drain too much less power than we thought. I have got almost 3 hours Screen On Time and have 57% battery left... Also I have to say that I spent all night with only 5% battery drain :

No, I had been browsing with AOSP browser sending email and listened to some music via bluetooth. I use my phone a lot
I think that the config I posted above causes the battery monitor not register when the device is active, maybe because the phone never turns on 4 cores simultaneously, i dont know

It's no secret. you can have this battery life with a little tweaking. there at battery thread, you'll find better battery life than this.. Now Beat that

Anyways..Your's battery life is great..I am gonna try these settings..

I'll game your battery life down to 3 hours no matter what settings you make.

Whta do you mean by?
CPU Voltages: 700,725,725,750,750,775,775,825,825,850,850,875,et c...
The CPU Voltages range from:
384000 = 850000
to
1512000=1150000
Do you mean just undervolt by ~150? on some phones that not safe, ~100 is better?

If you played games you won't be getting that much

No offense but your battery outcome is nothing special.
Getting 6h+ onscreen time is pretty normal with wifi on all the time.
I reach this with standard Kernel and m_plus Kernel on cyanogenmod 10.1 and 10.2 without tweaking anything.
But I am glad you could improve your battery

Exactly.
Once, I had 3h screen time, browsing and facebook, and still 65% left. So, theoretically, using Wifi I could browse for at least 8 hours.
I was using JWR66V at the time, stock kernel and rom, with root.

3Hrs sot,23Hrs total time & still 49% charge remaining :highfive:

Stop using SOT as some sort of benchmark. SOT differs for everyone and it depends what you're doing. For some, 3 hours is great, for some that's bad. It depends what you're doing. Anandtech got 6 hours SOT on the wifi benchmark for the Nexus 4 which requires the screen to be on at 200 nits brightness the whole time. You can easily get 6 hours reading an eBook.
So what?
Furthermore, underclocking your phone down to 1ghz isn't really an acceptable compromise to most.

Running it on dual core mode plus underclocked to 900 mhz and undervolted... Of course u can hit 6 hours
Nothing too fantastic

awake, means all 4 cores are running, usually when the touch screen is running, and no heavy app is used, 2 cores are only running.
Also, please stop making this "contest" on who's getting better batter life... just charge it every night before you go to bed, and everything will be fine.
Going camping in about 2 weeks, no internet there, i'll wipe everything, and go on a clean, stock, 4.3 ROM without installing any app, that way i can determine how well android works with the battery on its own.

Wow, for me I run @1836 interactive with 4096 sio and GPU @487 and I still get 4 hours

salut,
for me battery life is very little, it's the worst battery ever for me and i had a lot of phones, i have to charge it 2 times a day, and that is with moderate usage - 3G but data connected only when needed, 30 min voice calls, 10 sms, 20 mails, 30 min facebook+ twiter, the phone gets extremely hot even during basic tasks than bothers me even more that ****ty battery life....

Probably I will buy this phone anyway just to test the quad core cpu.
I hope to notice a small diference betwen my current phone (LG-P940) and the P880.

Using a fixed brightness is pointless if you want to compare across devices. What is 50% on some devices might be 70% on others.
The only way to truly compare would be to use a brightness meter on a reference image to set brightnesses the same on two devices.
It has already been said that the Optimus 4X is much brighter than most LCDs, and I'd be inclined to agree, it really helps for sunlight legibility.
Low battery life
I experience the same problem. I am a heavy user of the phone so the screen is on often.
My experience is too much comparable with my previous phone, the sony xperia x10 which has a battery issue.
My phone becomes also very hot while charging. I never experienced this with a phone so much as with this one.
I will factory reset the phone and perform a battery test. I will keep you posted.
Have you updated your phone ?
The v10b update is supposed to fix the battery and heat issues.
I am on version v10b and after like 10 charging cycles i must conclude that battery life suks

i think we can only get better results if we get root and custom kernels / roms .....

A good portion (about 4 hours) of the day was spent inside a building that results in poor reception. As a result, there should've been more battery drain during that time. Also, I have wifi enabled almost the entire time.
The screen was on for almost 2 hours.
The Nexus 4 gets plenty of deep sleep.
Some notes about my activity. I listened to music through a bluetooth headset for about 20 minutes. I sent and received over a 100 text messages. Wifi was enabled and connected almost the entire time. Autosync for email, contacts, calendar, facebook, and twitter are enabled. I have Tasker running in the background. I played around on some social apps (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) and downloaded/updated a few apps.
This is probably light to moderate usage in my eyes and would easily get you through an 8-hour work day. Battery drain was between 5% and 7% per hour, depending on when during the day you calculated it. It usually averaged around 6% drain per hour though.
I'll probably take a few more screens of my stats tonight before updating to the OTA. I'll then report back tomorrow with similar screens to see if the OTA helps battery consumption at all.
EDIT: I have posted updated stats on page 5. These will include stats after the OTA update.

Keep in mind it should get better after 4-5 cycles. It's certainly not groundbreaking but it's also nothing to sneeze at. With some monitoring you should have no problem making it through a day without charging. I don't like monitoring though, which is why I love this Note 2

I just updated to the OTA and will charge my phone overnight to give it a full charge and update this thread again tomorrow afternoon after another full day's usage.

I wouldn't say it is terrible battery life, but I would say there is room for improvement.
Again, keep in mind I experience a little more battery drain due to poor reception. I saw someone else post a screenshot reaching 18 hour battery life, with almost 3 hours of screen usage.
Hopefully, the OTA provides some better usage times. I'll report back again tomorrow afternoon.

This is really bad. I often reach 6 hours of screen on time on my GS2 with a 2000mAh battery.
I don't understand which part of the Phone is draining that much power,
IPS panels are usually pretty efficient, the S4pro if not pushed should not drain that much either.
The only reason I can think of is that the CPU is spending too much time at the max clockrate with multiple cores online.
Can someone post a screenshot of CPU spy?
I would be interested to see what the battery life is like in airplane mode over a few hour period. One with the screen off (more than likely in deep sleep), the other with the screen on. If the problem is in the jelly bean kernel that can be fixed on xda. If it is the screen draw that is a little different. I have full faith in the developers on xda.

My gut says that the kernel could have used a couple months more cooking time. The hardware is way too efficient for these performances.

[Q] General Battery Life Questions - Looking for Other Input

Have new Sprint HTC One and when first using it out of the box, battery life seemed to be real good.
Mods I have made.. Unlocked and am running OMJ's custom ROM.
Here is what I am questioning now.. (my 14 days are almost up):
I leave it charge all night and first thing in the morning, I use it for 15-20 minutes catching up on mail, facebook and news. I am connected to wifi in the home. What I am experiencing is a 6% battery drain from this pretty consistently and display on auto brightness in a dark room in the morning. Last night I set power saver to including cpu, diaplay and data connection. I had the display set dimmer than normal/what the auto brightness would be. I experienced the same 6% drop this morning.
I am not sure what to think, its kind of disconcerting to think you wack 6% of battery before the first cup of coffee.
I have no data, but am wondering if anyone has see lesser batter just from unlocking?
OMJ's ROM is pretty stock, so I would not think that is causing any issues.
I am looking to see what others are experiencing from there initial 15-20 minute usage.
I am open to any input that could help me conclude that there is not an issue with the phone so I can stop worrying about meeting the 14 day return deadline.
Edit: Adding images and info to attempt to create a baseline for others to compare to. Images are from GSam Battery Monitor available in the market.
The images show 30 minutes of use after unplugging from a full charge, Power Saver off, Brightness set to Dim and using WiFi. Screen using 18% and Apps using 75%... you can also see the specific apps being used.
It would be great if others could mimic and provide their results. This would allow us all to have something to compare to.
it could just be the battery technology. i know with some laptops here at work they dont really "fully charge" the battery to increase the battery life span. so this could be a normal thing. For me personally im more concerned about the phone lasting atleast through the whole day before i have to charge it.

Yea I mean I'm not sure how much you use your phone a day but I'm seeing consistently approx 4-4.5 hrs of screen on time a day. Unplug the phone at 7am and plug it in when I got to bed usually around 11pm. Some days if I'm watching a lot of video or playing games I'll have to plug it in around 8pm or so but that isn't too often

Anyone want to do a small comparison test?
Set brightness to auto, charge to 100% and then use for 15 minutes checking mail, Facebook, web surfing, or whatever (simple activity, not gaming), in normal ambient room lighting, using WiFi, Power Saver off. Then report your battery level after the 15 min.

Oh, I am all over that. Did the calibration yesterday. I have not noticed a significant difference, but I do agree this is a needed step. Especially when changing between significantly different ROMs. Thanks for pointing it out.
What I am really looking for from others are some comparison results. I have created some pictures this morning and will be adding them to my post, in an attempt to create a baseline that others can use to do the exact same and provide a result. This should allow others and myself to see if there is any significant difference between our devices.
I edited my post with baseline settings and images.
Would be great if others could mimic and post results.

Hehe Sorry when I read my post it seems kind of snappy and nothing about your reply led me to this conclusion. I understand your looking for a comparison and I think its safe to say I easily use 5-10% of my battery life first thing when I get up and check all of my stuff.

No problem. I appreciate your input.
Here's my usage. 10 min of xda and around 30 min of listening to the music. Tranquil rom. Thicklizard's kernel.

How do you have a extremely low awake time, and your kernel usage is only 0.9%? My unrooted stock kernel runs from 20%-35% at any given time.

I use autostarts from playstore to prevent certain apps from starting and running in the background, unless I need them to. Here's another screen shot of around 19 min reading xda and around 40 min listening to the music.

Your link is not working.. Your previous post of performance is awesome! I tried that ROM and loved it but don't like the all black and blue. Maybe I should of spent more time with hit.. Is there a way to make it look like normal colors?

Does anybody know if limiting background processes to zero will help battery life? My phone had 1hr 20min awake times with 12 mins screentime/usage after 8-9 hours.
This was with absolutely no power saving at all, whatsoever. Phone was around 75% after those 9 hrs I believe, with kernel taking 33%, and radio taking ~15. Fresh after factory reset. Only apps were Email, Doodlejump, GSAM, ES, Keep and Swiftkey.
Tomorrow I will turn off auto sync, limit background processes, and turn on power saver/sleep mode. Let's see how much that helps.
Here's what in doing most of the drain comes from having only 1 bar in my new dorm

A ROM to make the HTC One behave like the Evo 3D?

Hey Guys,
So I have been using the one for about 4 months now and battery has not been up to my exceptions...
I know, this thing has a quad and pushing more pixels but it has a 25% bigger battery too (1730 vs 2300). What I want to know is if there is a Rom that'll turn this phone into a 1.2GHZ DUAL core, thats right, just literally chop off 2 cores at ALL times to boost battery?
Haven't rooted the phone yet but this battery situation is wanting me to do that.
This is from experience but HTC EVO 3D got 18 hours after good amount of use and almost two years of battery use (rooted with a good kernel) vs HTC One with 10 hours with "fresh" battery (stock).
Thanks
Why would you want that??
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CXKF42O
That will fix the battery issue if you don't mind it being bulky
Yeah, why cripple the phone when you could cripply your wallet AND the aesthetic of the phone!? Haha.
All seriousness, what kind of battery life are you getting?
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk
Would need kernel source to make a custom kernel to shut down 2 of the cores
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk
Root the One before trying to shut down cores. I had the 3D and this phone has much better battery. 10 hours is like 25% with decent use on the One. Something not right off that is what you are getting.

Use cdma only in your mobile settings, This phone gets way better battery life than the 3d

Just underclock to 1.1 ghz
The cores support hotplugging. They are off if not being used. If they are being used, then they are being used to do something that will finish faster with more than two cores, in which case having two cores would give you less battery.
What you want is similar to people who want like 56mhz low power states. It consumes the same or more battery. If the phone could get literally free battery at the cost of just disabling two cores permanent...don't you think they would do that?

So if what your saying it right, then why haven't phones increased DRAMATICALLY in battery life with these humongous batteries?
I will root the phone as soon as KitKat ROMs are released.
I've had the Evo 3d and i don't see how you got better battery on that thing. Don't bother with turning off cores, it won't help cause the other core will just be working harder. if you really want to try to save battery, underclock or use the power saver mode with "limit cpu" option. Either way, the biggest use of battery on this phone is not the processor, it's the screen.
Yeah I also had a 3d for a long damn time and I have no idea how you're getting worse battery life. My one gets around 3 hours screen on time. Lucky if I got an hour and a half with the 3d

im with the others i have no idea how with the same use the 3d is lasting longer than the one, i use to have to charge my 3d by 1pm cause it was dead, the one can go all day and still have 15-25% when i got to bed.

I think you are right, the screen is sucking down the power, maybe I should get a lower res screen (Moto X?)

Will definitely be rooting as soon as a good KitKat ROM shows up, what is SWG?
To give people a reference to the awesome EVO 3D battery I had, one night (8 hrs no use) I lost only 3% battery! Compared to the HTC ONE I have lost 46% on standby over time
So obviously my next question is about screen res, any options to decrease screen res in certain ROMs or kernels?
You must have a rouge app or something. I recommend either finding what it is or doing a factory reset. The screen takes a lot of battery, but not that much. Also screen doesn't matter in stand by time.
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk 4
I agree. You need to see why yours is not sleeping well. Just as an example, I didn't use my phone for 9 hours while at work today, and my battery was at 91% when I got out. It seems as if yours isn't going into deep sleep when your not using it.
Also, I don't believe the display drain has to do with the res but more the screen backlight brightness setting. I have noticed that if I turn down the backlight when I can, it saves a little on the battery also. I've also noticed on mine that the WiFi being turned on is a big battery drain. I have my WiFi "sleep" during long periods of inactivity.
Good luck, YMMV

I see what you guys are saying. Let me factory reset the phone first, since rooting is such a pain these days. I will report back.
I might have a battery issue, so rooting can be problematic if I wanted a warranty repair.
I decreased my screen resolution and my battery life is amazing
My 3D had about the worse battery life of any phone I've had to be honest... If your One is getting worse than the 3D you likely have something set up wrong or poorly that is draining it.... Check your wakelock times on apps.

I'm curious to see what kind of speeds you guys are running you snapdragon 800 with voltage myself i managed to get to 2880 ghz running stock voltages and my cpu bin is PVS 0 has anyone managed to get to 3.0 GHZ or maybe even further post your speeds and voltage below
voltages are default trinity kernel, pvs 3, speed is obvious..

lol, at that cpu speed, you are not allowed consider battery life! but i do use 2880/300 occasionally for a daily. ill see 4-4.5h sot normally with 2880/300. you have to remember, it doesnt stay at 2880mhz, itll only go there if it needs to.

at stock speeds i usually see between 5 and 6 hours sot with heavy usage, on lte 100% of the time(no wifi). ill normally kill my battery in 7-12 hours, but that because im always using the phone. i dont let it lay around sleeping for hours.

Yeah, I was talking about your screenshot where it said both the min/max were 3000. You get pretty good battery out of this phone with 2880. I get about 3 hours on 1700, but thats for a different thread.

Okay, so I couldn't get Franco r33 to run more than 2880 MHz, so I switched to the newest Trinity (The one from the new build environment) and now I can easily hit 3014 MHz. I don't know if it will ever be of any use, but it's nice to know that it's possible

Nope, don't you think everybody is able to? Your device being a PSV 0 and mine being a 4, I don't think it makes much difference.
It could be fun to see how far we can push it. I don't experience any problems on 3014, so I'm thinking that we can go higher

Sorry there, misread a previous post if yours. But think about it, wouldn't it be awesome figuring out how much we can push it. As a bonus I would love tauting my little brother, joking about how my phone runs at the double amount of clocks of his One (if 3.4 GHz is even possible)
