"Stock" For Sprint Techs - Sprint HTC One (M7)

Ok guys, the purple tint camera issue is killing me. As always, last I went weeks ago... They blamed root. Is this plan here possible so I won't have to unroot and remove s-off.
1. Flash the hex edited hboot that says "locked" and "s-on"
2. Flash one of the stock roms from either viper or indirect, but remove superuser!
3. Flash a stock recovery
Do you think it'll work?

Most techs only look for the superuser app. Flash a stock rooted Rom. Delete the superuser app. I wouldn't worry about hiding s-off

Sprint tech here. The techs you're talking to are idiots. Our M&P officially states that we support rooted phones. Worst case scenario, they will have to RUU the phone for you. After they've done that, the issue will still be present and they'll have to order a new one for you. Go back and insist that they do their job. If you need me to, I can try to pull our M&P document tomorrow and send it to you so you can show them.

I thought that had been Sprint's policy for a long time. But I took my rooted LG in the spring for a problem with the speaker and the first tech 'flagged' my phone in Sprint's system. I even took it back home and set it back to stock. But after it was flagged I was forced to upgrade or replace it though Asurion because nobody would touch it. So you're saying I wasted a perfectly good upgrade?!? WTH?!
How long have your M&P docs stated that you'd work on rooted phones?

Yeah. Any tech that flags your device as DBR for being rooted is breaking policy and majorly ****ing people over. If root is suspected to be the cause of the problem, the procedure is to flash back to stock and wipe the device then try to replicate the issue. If the issue persists and there's no physical damage, it's a hardware defect and needs to be replaced under TEP/warranty.

My bad. I got busy today and totally forgot to snatch the M&P. Let me see if I can get it really quick before my shift ends just in case something like this comes up in the future.
Also relevant to note here is that there's a good chance your newphone will have the camera issue because, from what I've seen, there's circumstances in which ever One does it. It seems to be related to how hot the phone is. Some phones are worse than others so YMMV.
EDIT: That took all of five seconds. Official whatever thing attached.

The last time I had any issues with my phone, the tech completely messed up my homescreen configuration by accepting the sprint homescreen bs thatt I geeky every reboot. It really irks me to think how many units have been RMA'd and the consequences of increased cost of future devices because noobs don't have the common sense to follow this basic rule.

your n7 cleaned his cache with every reboot
i think you can implement this into your startup script obviously it is too late to find it out now but i think we could have fixed it without complete wipe although if ,,you'' played around with your system without knowing it it is a good time to do a full wipe.
that s how i do it with my phones and tablets: it behaves in a way i don't expect it to do -> wipe.

Rooted and returned

So, I rooted my last N7 to give the "washed out screen after video" fix a try (which worked great for me, btw). I decided that I couldn't live with the yellow tint to the screen, and the screen lift got worse on that unit while I owned it, so I processed it for a return and will wait a little awhile until stock is back in B&M stores (tired of the UPS shuffle).
Unfortunately, this was my first time rooting and I had the mistaken impression that performing a factory reset got rid of root. Oops. I therefore sent it back while still rooted.
What do you think the chances are that the tech who inspects it for the return will check it for root? If he does and they reject the return, so be it. I'm kind of inclined to think it's not really something they regularly check.
Thoughts? Just how much anxiety should I allow myself to feel over this screw up?
All they have to do is turn it on to see that it is rooted, which they will probably do to check out the yellowish tint. As for if they will decline your return or not, I have no idea. If you sent it to Google you should be ok but ASUS has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to rooting and warranty (They have denied legitimat physical issues due to rooting).

Not to highjack, but I think myself and wynand32 might share similar curiosity now that you brought that one point up - What did ASUS do in that scenario? Did they ship the unit back to the customer?

How can they tell it's rooted just by turning it on? I didn't mention that I was smart enough to re-lock the bootloader...
Oh, and yes, this was a return to Google Play. Note that it's the same facility where ASUS takes returns, however.
Well, whatever happens, keep us posted! I would be interested in knowing how this gets resolved.
I'll definitely report back. But if anyone wants to clarify that "they can tell it's rooted by turning it on" part, I'd appreciate it. I know there's an unlock icon when the bootloader's unlocked, but I wasn't aware of anything obvious when it's "just" rooted.
Thanks!

The boot animation, going into "About Device" if you flashed a ROM/kernel, finding the superuser app. Any of the above.
I would think it wouldn't make a difference if you're returning it for hardware issues.

Well, since I'm new to all this stuff, here's what I think: I did relock the bootloader, so the unlock icon isn't there. I didn't install a different ROM, so it's just rooted stock. I did a factory reset, so there shouldn't be any obvious app loaded (should there?).
I'd hope that the tech would have to open a terminal and do an su command or somesuch, but that's really what I'm wondering now. Will a stock N7 that's been factory reset show anything obvious?

Hee hee... Yeah, I was waiting for someone to say that. That's not precisely correct, though, because even if they refuse the return they'd just have to send it back to me (and charge me shipping) or maybe take it but charge a restock fee (which they're waiving because of the defects).
So, the cost would be at most about $37, or about $15 and I'd be stuck with a yellow tint and screen lift. Which is to put a precise price on the anxiety...

Okay, so, sorry to be obtuse, but: there's a "superuser app" that's installed in the app drawer even on a stock device that's been factory reset? Now I'm just curious how all this stuff works. I had no idea that such an app was installed when I rooted the N7, and that the app would remain when it was reset.
Now I wish I had an N7 to play with to see how it all works.

Okay, thanks. It'll be interesting to see if 1) the tech notices the app/rooting and 2) if they reject the return because of it. Of course, there's also the chance that they'll notice that it's rooted and not reject it, in which case we may never know.
I'll report back...

Actually, now that I think about it, the last time I RMA'd my Transformer Prime, I just wiped it and did not unroot. Asus didn't have a problem with it.

Gunny, have you tried out any of the AOSP ROMs? I'm sure you have, but if that's what you're looking for you can already have it. This community is almost always faster at getting updates out than Google, even on Nexus devices. I have a feeling that this phone will be something of a red-headed step child to the Nexus family because of the special hardware/software considerations(i.e. the Camera[reported to take abysmal pictures on AOSP ROMs, so must be something soft/hardware combination HTC is pulling out], Beats audio chip, etc.).

If exchanging through HTC, you're gonna roll the dice. If they determine that it's a hardware failure in no way related to anything you've done to the phone, then they will replace free of charge. If they don't make that determination, they'll still replace but they will charge you for the new parts(camera + new locked motherboard). At least, that's been their M.O in my experience going back to at least the Nexus One.
Thanks for an insightful reply. I bought it from tmobile over the phone..and plan to take it for a store exchange on June 5

As another tip, make sure to turn on Fast Boot under Settings > Power. This will make it more "difficult" for the rep to check since you can't boot into the bootloader or into recovery while it's checkboxed. Also, it's the default option. Just make sure the obvious things are gone: stock ROM, no SU, etc.

Uh huh.. I'm no noob and I want S-Off for LOCKED so that I can claim hardware failures like the power button, NFC not working etc etc. Where I'm from, an unlocked bootloader is an instant reject no matter what the damage is.

I'm new to the G-Flex but not to Android or Linux.

Just wanna introduce myself. I'm Matt, and I just picked up my G-Flex yesterday at T-Mobile. This is my first LG but not my first android. I've been rooting, unlocking, modding, theming, bricking, and recovering androids since the DROID 2 days. I'm not claiming to be a dev, but I do know my way around android/ Linux. I am a crack flashing android whore. I was on the RAZR maxx when it came with Gingerbread 2.3.4 and stuck with it through JB 4.1. Moved on to the RAZR HD MAXX on ICS 4.0.4 and followed a couple of the best devs Hashcode and Dan Rosenberg. Was one of the first to profit from Dan's RAZR HD MAXX bootloader exploit. Big props to the first ever to crack a Motorola bootloader.
Shortly after I moved on to the Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-I337. I can't count the soft bricks I recovered from before Loki and Odin files where released. Bad thing was my phone being rooted was able to be my hot spot, so when bricked I had no way to look up or ask questions. But I some how through trial and error recovered.
I now have the G-Flex on T-Mobile and within a few hours of purchase I'm rooted thanks to the IoRoot method. Thanks to the cat that posted the thread on here for that one in this same General Forum section. And needless to say I've already bricked it twice tonight. Just recovered it and got booted back up and set up.
With all that said, I'm not afraid of testing or helping with any development. I'm not afraid of brick, cuz I'm sure with all the talented devs on xda and myself, I will recover.
Luckily I made a back up of my build-props, system, and recovery so I was able to restore and push thru adb. Also wiped cache, dalvik, and system via adb. And reboot back to stock out of the box. But still a little puzzled how I kept root. Not complaining just puzzled.
If there is anyone working on a TWRP or CWM and Loki please message me and let me know what I can do to help. Like I said I'm not a dev and not claiming to be at all. I'm just brave. And mainly don't know where to start with porting a recovery much less Loki. But I can test and I take instruction well.
Hope I can help excited with the potential of the G-Flex....

nice post man:good:
I think we are pretty close to a recovery here, as a few folks are working on it.
Just like any new phone, it takes awhile for it to "catch on"; especially when all the "reviewers" have been slamming this phone for various reasons.
That makes people slow down jumping on it, but this phone is really fantastic, EPIC battery, great display, fastest phone out right now, and, the more that people ignore the idiot reviewers, and grab this thing, the sooner the development will take off.
The "problem" is that it's so awesum stock out of the box, that there isnt a sense of urgency to mod it! :victory:

I have no issues stock with root, i already debloated it and its running like a champ. I have the inverted mms app and am loving my phone right now.

I'm loving it too. I'm rooted still and have installed XPOSED installer with "App Settings", "Xtheme engine beta 5"( with HUE theme) , and "Xblast" I've got the same inverted MMS. And I used APP Settings mod to changed the system UI, stock browser, and MMS ppi to 260. And used HUE theme for that AOSP blue feel. Used xblast for nav bar color change. I like the blue / Vanilla look. I guess that's cuz I'm a product of ICS and motoblur. I'm user android tweaker to speed things up a bit and to smooth out scrolling. And Android Tuner Pro to trim on boot and manage things a little. Snap dragon's Battery guru has always made a substantial difference in battery life, but its still in initial learning so I can't give a review on it for the G-Flex. But can't wait to get custom recovery for it and feel lot more comfortable diving into the modding/theming a good bit more.
I've noticed the stock launcher and settings, well really most the stock lg apps are very similar to Touchwiz. I've already tried out the Google Now launcher and "OK Google" does work from the home screen. You don't have to hit or exe any part of Google to be able to take advantage of the hot word command.

He is so close to cracking this bootloader. But he does not have this device. Thanks for intro and nice to meet u

Nice post @Matt. You probably seen me over @droidrzr.com , I ran the site for the first two years. I picked up the Gflex for ATT a few days ago.
TBH i love this phone. Yeah, its not running the latest version of Android and it has a few quirks however, the reviews from all over the net are killing this device imo.
Tethering, have you tried the good ole SQL hack just to see?
Sent from my LG-D950 using Tapatalk
fortunately, many of the smarter folks out there, that use XDA, dont pay alot of attention to what a bunch of DB reviewers think about phones..I had a one maxx b4 this, and it too was a great phone, slammed by most reviewers.
this phone is tons of fun, and we're pretty close to custom recovery, and a flood of roms.
Yes I have. The hack with SQL by going to settings storage/settings/ then change the authorization line (forgot exactly what it was called. I would know it if I saw it) from a 1 to a 0? Yeah I went looking for it. The way I understand it is they have figured out how to make that one obsolete. Seems as if its a little deeper into the their end of the monitoring rather than the phone just check account subscription. But I using the good ole "WIFI Tether beta 5" apk from a couple years ago and it seems to work. Hasn't added any more data to my WiFi tether usage. And yeah man I remember you. And droidrzr.com. those were the days when I was a crack flasher and barely knew my way around a RAZR. Don't know how many of those I bricked by not reading you couldn't install custom recovery except safe strap unless you had dev edition. Lmao. The RAZR forums always had cool devs willing to help and teach. I went to the GS4 and wow it was like a an ego fueled pissing contest between the biggest smart a$$e$ on the web. No one seemed to want to help just wanted to argue or try to point out that you don't know crap and they know it all. Glad to be out of their forums. And glad to see all these cats on the g flex forums have all been super cool and helpful.
They way it should be.

Yeah @Matt if your not a complete moron and ask the same question over and over again peeps around here are cool.
Yeah, the razrs where the good ole days lol. I went to the note family about 2 years ago and have a note 3 too. I like the Gflex . The pure fact that we have fastboot access is a good sign. I've been talking to hashcode and a few others to see what van be done.
Also, most of the Gpro xposed stuff work on the Gflex if anyone was wondering.

LG Please know we hate this. Let us turn this annoying feature off

This right here pisses me off
Sick of this damn call timer when trying to use other apps during a call.
Although that there isnt the main reason why I'm getting rid of this phone, I'll go ahead and add it to the ever growing list of reasons why I'm dumping it and getting a Nexus 6. Screw LG and their locked down pile of garbage. Sad thing is, it's so much wasted potential.
I love it when a new device comes out, and XDA becomes riddled with whiney posts about "this" or "that" which users say they 'hate' or 'can't stand'. Okay, so there's no publicized root method yet, deemed safe for consumerism, but once that's released I'm sure that every little quarky nuance will have a method to remove, hide, or alter in some way. The call timer has an option for hiding in the LG G3 via G3 Tweaksbox. With that example, I stand confident that this phone will have some type of similarities to, as I mentioned, "deal" with the things people complain about. Fact is, this phone is not impressively different from the G3, and there are no real profoundly engineered improvements made in the G4. You may ask, "Apex, y u bye did fone den?" Good question. My answer is this, I like LG's products and I appreciate the work developers are able to do, in order to make something good, great. So, in the meamtime, until root is available, you won't hear me having a hissy fit about (insert whatever) things. Samsung isn't for me, HTC is bunk, Motorola, well... been there, done that. I think most folks would respect those complaints be made on Reddit, or somewhere besides the place that developers afford us the grace of enjoying what they do for the community, free of charge.

Meh, I left the steaming pile of hardware failures that is a Nexus 6 for the G4. Volume rockers stopped working on the first one, new phone had screen issues, ya, the N6 isn't the greatest phone ever.

Because clicking a check box to unlock the bootloader is so hard. Root takes time on all modern devices.
Hahaha... Now root being available, I've installed debloated ROM and 3000mah battery serves me really well. Not to mention boost in speed as well. On stock ROM, I was missing my nexus 5 so much.
I hope you stuck around for a little longer. Feels like beasty phone just got injected with the steroid.

Agreed....I was fed up with this phone.....root came and glory glory amen it's a better phone. Even with just a simple debloated ROM....can't wait till they really tweak the stock ROM like crazy. I probably won't go aosp....because of the camera app...whole reason I bought the phone...it deletes the side car RAW file in the default gallery aosp can't do that...neither can manual camera app or Fv5
---------- Post added at 06:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:20 PM ----------
The thermal throttling and stuff needs some crazy tweaking...and a better kernel...my apps have to re draw too much...memory leak somewhere

I'm not sure if you figured it out, but since we have root, you can download app ops from play store. Go to the phone section and disable draw on top. It will stop the timer. And so far I have not noticed anything wrong.

I checked and I still get the dialog box, make sure the option is checked in the call settings. I'm not sure what you mean about the notification bar, but I can drag down and click on the call, which brings me back to the call.

Thanks for this
Seems like a really silly reason to get rid of an otherwise awesome phone...
What's funny is that the current root methods as dangerous as they are. Are no more dangerous then when I had my Evo4g, and that team didn't have something like "OEM Unlock" to make it easier. No risk, no reward.
Not to mention that you can drag that icon anywhere on the screen so i dont see how it can be so intrucive during other app usage. Also why dont you just talk on the phone, your on a call, pay attention and stop playing with other apps, real easy
