Samsung Captivate SGH_I897 running CWM 10.1.2. Does not recognize sim card, but sim card works in another phone. Looking for a modem that may work in the Memphis, TN area or any modem files at all, as well as instructions on how to flash it. Bought the phone cheap at a yard sale. A friend of mine has told me it is probably the modem file, but he isnt that familiar with androids, just the one he has. Could resetting back to stock and reflashing help? Or just reflash the modem?
Back to stock usually solves most issues. Please check your IMEI number given in the About Device page (do not post it here) with the number printed in the back of your phone to see if they match.
IMEI numbers match. Thank you for your reply.

@wnb_jr: Take a look at this sticky thread for a flashing guide, and attached to Post 1 is the Odin software you would need: [Stock ROMs](OneClicks Master Collection)+[Kernels (Stock & w/ CWM)]+[Modems] UPDATED. Links in my signature I would recommend following: Stock GB ROM+ Kernel, Modems. The ROM and Corn Kernel are Ginger Bread stock release KK4, and the Modems sticky thread has a link to a map where users tag which modem worked for them and in what area. And as always, have fun.
Quick version flashing to stock (mostly):
1. Download "I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, NO Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe" and extract. (Stock GB ROM link)
2. Follow instructions from 4-2ndtwin contained in the txt file to flash the stock rom.
3. Download "Odin3v1.85.zip" and extract. (Stock ROMs OneClicks Master Collection post #1)
4. Download Odin flashable version of Corn Kernel 7.06. (Kernel link)
5. Run Odin3 v1.85.exe. Load Corn kernel into the PDA slot of Odin. Connect your phone in Download Mode to your computer, wait until Odin recognizes it, and click Start. When Odin displays the big green PASS, disconnect the micro USB from your phone.
6. Reboot your phone into Recovery (typically holding down three buttons Volume Up, Down, and Power until the phone reboots, then when you see the initial splash screen come up let go of the buttons). Navigate the Recovery menus and find the option to Root and install SuperUser.
7. Profit. Now that you're back to Stock with root and SU, you can go anywhere from there- flash other ROMs if you want (now on you can flash them through Recovery instead of Odin). Backup options in Recovery are referred to as 'Nandroid backup'. Recovery is also known as CWM or ClockWorkMod recovery. If necessary check out the Modems thread. Any issues connecting your phone may be answered in 4-2ndtwin's thread Captivate - PC Connection Issues, Download Mode and Recovery Mode Help.

Looking in the About phone area it says my Kernel is 2.6.29 [email protected] #2 which i'm assuming isn't a stock Kernel. I can't get into download mode or recovery to save my life. Any good ways to get it back? Everything I've tried doesn't work. I'm curious about this android sdk adb access thing but I haven't been able to search about it. Thankfully my phone works right now but the only way i know how to flash stuff it through the key method.
Any links to a tutorial about this adb thing? ALso, where to download the android-sdk?
Thank you thank you thank you!
wrong section
WRong thread but dont wanna flame... : D
This happens some time, just flash this and you will have 3 button recovery again.
EDIT: STUPID ME, just realized you cannot get into recovery... Well use ADB to get into Recovery then flash that
Android SDK - http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Make sure u have Java JDK installed! - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
Sorry idk about a good ADB tutorial though
That is a stock kernel.
1. This is a stock kernel
2. Which 3-button combo did you try? It can be either +-USB or -Power

I can't get into download mode or recovery mode. I've flashed quite a few different roms since i've had this phone and never had a problem. For some reason this time when I went from MikeyMike01's GR-12 2.3.3 back to stock with Odin3, I lost the ability to use my volume buttons + power to go anywhere. I was trying to install CWM to put Serendipity 6.4 on my phone because the other one was having some weird issues.
Thanks to everybody else for the links I'll try them when I get home... work is blocking the android sdk download website. I'll update in a bit with success (hopefully).
If all else fails, you could extract the 3 button fix posted above, and odin.
No buttons working? Pull batt, open odin, insert usb, reinsert bat, and it should go into download mode..

skip all that .... if it boots upto OS and you just have no 3 button..... Use This
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418 and flash 3 button with it. Access to recovery or dl mode not needed. Just be sure to follow the instructions with the tool. It works. Simple.
Moved to proper forum.

before i tell you an easy way to get into recovery, was this odin "oneclick" or did you have to add a .tar file to a "PDA" slot and perhaps a .pit file and others? this is highly important because 3-button fix only flashes the secondary bootloader. if you still have 2.3.3 bootloaders this will brick the phone! there needs to be an update to the 3-button fix to flash both bootloaders. a quick test if you have 2.3.3 bootloaders is if the phone says "galaxy s gt-i9000" you may have 2.3.3 bootloaders on the phone. on 2.3.3 this screen is part of the bootloaders as well as the param.ifs, flashing 2.1 without the bootloaders will show the i9000 splash before the att param.ifs splash
if it was odin oneclick you are safe to flash a 3-button fix. if it was odin full you may still be on the 2.3.3 bootloaders and dont have button combos due to some incompatablility with the phone, i saw this once. please use odin oneclick first then see if it still needs 3-button fix.
if you need to reflash with odin "oneclick"
look up "adb" make sure you know how to manually install drivers. there are links in posts above
if you did flash with oneclick then you can also root and use rom manager to reboot into recovery. then flash 3-button fix via update.zip. search dev section for designgears' 3-button fix, there is a update.zip version.
why do u need the three button here...just hold down the volume key and the power button to get in to the recovery. worked for me.

I used Odin oneclick to reset it to stock. I've been moving this weekend so I just left the phone on 2.1 but today at work i'll try the method you mentioned above. I didn't even think about rom manager to reboot to recovery i'll try that first. I was trying to reboot the phone into recovery so I could install CWM. Sounds easier than the other methods.
Can someone please post a more detailed set of steps for installing Continuum v5.4.1 from stock. I've been using FireFly for the last 3 months and really want to try out this rom. I've restored back to stock using ODIN one click and have done a master clear. There are no details on how to install the new bootloaders and the kernel using ODIN. Please don't slam me as I am new to this. I've read the entire first post. I've watched the MobileTechVideos video on youtube, but it appears to differ from what is posted in Icezar's post: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9PKsk32Y0s (appears to be one file that gets bootloaders, kernel and ROM).
I've downloaded the ROM to my internal SD card. I have the talon kernel TalonDEV-0.1.2.tar file and the galaxys-bootloader-JVB.tar.md5 file on my computer. I used the ODIN3 v1.3 that was listed in the thread using the bootloader file in the PDA field. The installation fails; my phone is in download mode and connected to the USB on the motherboard. I end up having to pull the battery and have a soft brick (I have to use a jig to get download mode again and one click to get back). I've tried ODIN3 v1.82 doing the same steps, but in that version I put it in the bootloader field; it fails as well. One thing I noticed is the bootloaders linked in the thread say JVB and the ROM now says JVH; is there an error in the post? Does the version of ODIN matter? Do I need Galaxy S windows drivers? Right now I'm staying on stock until I can figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for your time...
Follow Mobile tech videos Samsung Captivate (How To Install Gingerbread ROM's) video instead, it's how I installed Continuum. Just install continuum instead of whatever he installs at the end. Same process.
For what it is worth, the version of ODIN you use is very important. There are a few versions of the one click download version that are specifically meant to return you to a stock rom. You want to make sure that you are using the full version such as ODIN 3. I have ODIN 3 version 1.7 and have used that several times to install Continuum and other stuff like different kernels.
The latest version of Continuum comes with the proper kernal already packaged. For the sake of playing it safe, when I was flashing 5.4.1 over stock 2.1, I installed an older version of the talon kernel first. I don't know if that was necessary, but it didn't hurt the situation either.
Thanks for the replies; I really appreciate it. So continuum v5.4.1 has the kernel bundled. I still have to do the bootloaders first using the pda field and not the bootloader field in ODIN3 v1.82?
Another question that came to mind; is there a way to get out of download mode without using 1 click back to stock. If I am in download is there a key combo that will reboot the phone normally? Thanks!
So I successfully installed the gingerbread bootloaders. I used the new key combo to get into download again and used ODIN to install the talon 1.2 kernel linked in the continuum post and it completed and the phone starts to boot and I battery pull. I then used the new recovery mode combo which works, but when I try to find the rom on my sdcard I get an error that it cannot mount /sdcard along with a bunch of other mount errors. My screen is similar to this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076670&highlight=cannot+mount+/sdcard. In my case Odin completed successfully for the loaders and kernel. Please tell me what I missed. I used one click to get back to stock after I couldn't get past this error. Thanks...
icezar's instructions are probably the most complete you'll ever see for a custom rom ----- by far the best and most thorough, just follow them.
Best I can say is to just start over - one click back to stock, download mode, then flash continuum (first one - bootloaders).
I let everything boot up and then move updates to sdcard.
Flash kernel you want - I like Talon's (I'm on test 13 I think - OC'd at 1.2 -50,-50,-50,-75,-75-75 - all tweaks disabled)
Flash update zips via recovery .... 5.4.1 ---- I usually wipe Dalvick just to be sure, though it does it on its own.

On stock from download - just hold down all of the buttons, if it goes to recovery (which it should), just select reboot.
On GB loaders, it's different for the key combos, but still manageable.
I know exactly what you are going through. The instructions are very detailed. However, for those of us coming from 2.2 without having to understand Odin, the instructions are confusing. I think your confusion stems from there being multiple pit files. I have minimal knowledge of odin, but here is what I did to get GB Continuum from FF 3.0.
First off, I restored to stock using JV6 file without bootloaders per Icezar's link. I then downloaded each of the odin 1.3 rar files and extracted EACH (with 7zip) to a different folder. Then I ran the relevant odin file for each step.
Here is what I have gleaned from the process. The pit file in each rar is different, so normally you would select the relevant pit and pda file. The reason this worked without selecting the pit is because the pit and relevant pda were the only files in the directory as the instance of odin I ran. This may be wrong, but odin did not work if separated from the pit/pda.
Hope this helps because after tinkering with tweaks and UV settings I was at 40%battery after 1 day without charging.
---SGS i897 Captivate using:
Continuum 5.41 w/ Talon 1.7 [rfs all, OC/UV, TW4, no theme, no tweaks enabled, & NETFLIX!)
I have found I can UV 1000/800 150, but 100/200 only by 50 & 400 by 75 before boot looping. However I kept io deadline and tweaks above that selection on. With rfs it has been smooth and fast. But sd write speed no matter what is slow... Have you had any luck?

Thanks guys. I'm waiting on a JIG I ordered this weekend before I try again. It sucks sticking resistors in trying to get dowload mode after a soft brick. Does anyone know the techincal reason my sd card wouldn't mount after I flashed the bootloaders and the talon 1.2 kernel? From what I am reading I just do the gb booloaders then install continuum from recovery as it contains a newer talon kernel. Fyi my build number is 1009.
So I did my upgrade tonight to Continuum 5.5. This time I had my JIG from MTV; thanks Josh! It made it a hell of a lot easier. I did the GB bootloaders and did a battery pull after ODIN 1.82 completed and the galaxy s screen came up. Then I installed the old talon 1.2 kernel which I'm not sure if I needed to do. This time it worked and I believe my error was in the video he doesn't un check the Auto Reboot; in the ROM post it said to un check it. After the kernel completed I did a battery pull. I used the volume up + power combo to hit recovery. I did a clear cache and D Cache. Then installed the ROM. Thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it!
Good deal! Glad the jig worked for you. I have had an amazing battery life and modem/GPS functionality with 5.41 while keeping lagfix/extra 4 disabled.
Re: your 1.2 Q. Go to settings > about phone > kernel version. It should say 1.7 from the flashing of 5.5.

Hey guys!
I just brought back my phone from the phone to pc icon and it woulnt do anything so now Im back in download mode unsure of what step should be done to fix it.. Here is what happened:
1- Installed latest Miui successfully
2- Since only 3G here works I tried to flash a modem.bin via odin using the phone field. After that the phone turned off and now it just can go in download more (yellow android guy) or pc to phone icon...
What should I do now ? thought it was the good way to put a new modem file for 850mhz..
Help would be greatly appreciated
Try flashing the Ezbase 2.2 with the .pit file then follow the guide on the Miui MCg page to get back to Miui. The Samsung radio files .tar don't work with CM7/Miui and you don't put just a modem.bin file into that field whatever rom your on. Get the modem you want from here: http://codeworkx.de/download/cyanogenmod/ And flash it via CWM.
+ 1 to the above,
GTi9000 insanity cm012/glitch
After installing the lastest "S.U.R.F.A.C.E" ROM on my GT-I9000 I'm presented with the Galaxy S logo and nothing else,
Tried and tried vol up + home + power number of times now with no avail.
Everything was working fine before was able to boot into clockwork recovery ect, unfortunately I do not have a usb cable so can't try odin any help would be great.
Grab yourself a jig from ebay or the likes, or make one

It will boot into download fine the problem I have is it won't boot into recovery is there any way I can wipe it or does it look like I am in need of a cable?
Then reflash back to stock using Odin

clockwork recovery, i take it I messed up here so
No, meant what rom were you on before your flash? Stock?
oh sorry got the phone of a friend looked like a custom samsung rom, build version was easyprojectv2 if that rings any bells?
Looks like the problem was caused by trying to flash a odexed rom over a deodexed rom, or not having the correct bootloaders for the new rom. Normally before a flash I would return to stock (firmware from sammobiles.com) first via ODIN, do all the wipes, flash a kernel so you have a nice clean install to 'abuse'. Then I would add any custom rom from there be it by ODIN or by cwm.
Grab yourself a usb lead, nice clean flash and start again.
Ok so I've 3 file here:
APBOOT_I9000XWJW1_CL788890_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5

s1_odin_20100803.pit (not sure if i need this as was in the root of the odin folder not the firmware?)
Where do the other 3 file go PDA PHONE CSC???
I am also stuck on the same front, i donwloaded rom from samfirmware but it only had PDA part and nothing else, please suggest which official rom should i download??

I would go this way mate, first grab JVT from sammobiles.com ( register first)
Flash that using ODIN
Comes with 3 files, CSC, PHONE and PDA
PDA file goes to PDA in ODIN
PHONE goes into MODEM in ODIN
CSC goes in CSC in ODIN.
Also select PIT file, should be 512 on the PIT section on ODIN, hit start and it will flash then reboot.
Then open ODIN again, connect phone and flash your KERNEL to the PDA section of ODIN.
Then grab this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117579
and flash using cwm.
Your then on JW1 all rooted and ready to play.
put the "APBOOT_I9000XWJW1_CL788890_REV03_user_low_ship.tar" file into the PDA and flashed it. Everything seems to be working fine might stick with the stock for a while never really needed to be rooted.
ok i just popped the SIM and have no network access when i tap on Mobile Networks in the setting it tells me to insert a SIM????
the firmware i had was wrong didnt have a modem. Downloaded a jvt as buttwad said flashed an now everything working perfect now. cheers mate!
It's displayed this for 30 minutes now. I don't think it is installing the ROM:

I am coming from Gingerbread. What should I do now?
EDIT: Since I can't get back into recovery, I'm guessing I need to OneTouch this? I could really, really, use some help right now.
I would suggest holding Vol+/Vol-/Power until you reboot into recovery, doing the "wipe data/user reset" option, then re-flashing the rom.
That usually fixes it for me when I get a bad first flash to a new rom.
That doesn't work.
If you don't have access to CWM recovery, you could also try flashing another kernel that comes in a .tar format for ICS roms (e.g. Semaphore ICS) via Heimdall.
If that still doesn't work, I would suggest flashing back to a stock ROM and trying again.

I wouldn't know how to do any of that.
I would then strongly suggest that you flash back to a stock Rom.
The easiest way to do this is to go in the Development section and look for the "Stock Roms and one-clicks collection" sticky.
Inside of there, find a one-click ROM for Gingerbread and download it.
A few things to consider:
1. If you were previously on Gingerbread, get a Gingerbread-based one-click WITHOUT bootloaders.
2. If you were not previously on Gingerbread, get either an Eclair- or Froyo-based one-click WITHOUT bootloaders -or- a Gingerbread-based one-click WITH bootloaders.
Once you have downloaded the file, just run it - it should be pretty self-explanatory. You'll need to have your phone in download mode (power off, hold V+/V- and insert USB cable) to flash back to stock.
