Hi
I'm planning to buy out Xperia ZR. Couple of questions are confusing me:
1. Will I be able to root/unlock the bootloader?
2. Will I be able to use custom roms like CyanogenMod, MIUI, XDA-Developer's superior roms etc?
3. As I'm learning android development, will this phone be good if I look at that purpose also?
4. I heard there are some issue with call volume as its lower than others? Is it true?
5. Heating up issue? Is there?
Why I choose this phone over nexus 4 or xperia z?
Same hardware as Nexus 4 but having good camra+water proof body+Better battery life+NFC etc. in the same price.
I know I'll miss the s/w updates..Will I be able to use stock android latest updates on this in case I want to?
Comparing to Xperia Z couple of things are more as in the price of 5K..
Why I came to ask here, Coz if I see under Xperia Z or Nexus 4 there are lots of threads regarding android development custom roms, tweaks...but under ZR, I see a few...
Things are pretty much confusing me...
Please guide me even if I miss anything help me to get a better phone ..
Thanks Alot
I think that if you want to learn about android development, any device will be a good device.
Every device works for learning the basics, and any device have your own issues, so you will have to deal with some issues every now and then...

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes if you're willing to risk your device
4. Not really. The call volume is loud enough for average person, but not the best in the market of course.
5. It's a waterproof dustproof phone with IP58 rating. Expect some heating issue but it won't be serious from my experience. You can always cool it down with water.

Hi,
1. Yes, you will be able to root and unlock the bootloader.
2. This phone has very limited worldwide availability, so very limited dev support too. There are virtually no ROMs for this device save for CM by FXP. That's also why the Xperia ZR forum is under the 'Legacy & Low activity devices' forum.
3. For Android development (both apps & ROMs), the phone should be great. It's basically the same as Xperia Z except for some software changes. If you're learning development and you become good at it, you can contribute to the ZR development forum yourself.
4. I've just got my ZR and haven't put a SIM card in yet, so haven't checked the call volume, but Sony provides a lot of settings to tweak call volume in Settings -> Call settings.
5. Almost every new generation phone gets hot. Unlike PCs, there's no fan heatsink + thermal paste to quickly radiate the heat from the CPU. It has to dissipate from the back of the device, and quad-core CPUs get quite hot during gaming and other CPU intensive tasks. Adding to that, the battery also generates some heat. So it's natural for a high end CPU bearing phone/tablet to get hot. That said, ZR heats up less than Xperia Z from what I know, both having the same processor. I'm guessing this is because of the thicker back on ZR. HTC One, Nexus 4, Samsung Galaxy S4, Nexus 7 all heat up so it's not a deal breaker.
TL;DR -
Custom ROM support - Don't buy ZR, it doesn't have any save for one at the moment. Whether the situation will improve in future, I don't know, but it seems unlikely because of ZRs limited availability. I bought ZR for my dad because custom ROMs and stuff don't matter to him. Regarding upgrades, Sony has already promised to update ZR to 4.3, and they might also update it to the next version too. For that we'll have to wait and see.
Excluding ROM support, there's absolutely no reason not to buy ZR. Compared to Z, the smaller 4.55" 720p screen actually contributes to battery life as there's slightly less backlight area + the GPU has to power far less pixels than a 1080p screen (less that half the number), and the screen clarity is great because of the smaller size (greater pixel density than a 5" 720p screen for example). You really can't make out the difference between 720p and 1080p screens at the normal distance you hold your phone at while using it. Only if you look very, very closely. So the added battery life advantage is a bonus. The battery is also removable, so you can keep a spare with you to swap immediately if you ever need to do that, and even when the battery goes bad you can easily replace it with a new one yourself. This phone also has a higher water-proof rating, and feels very sturdy compared to the glass backed Xperia Z.
The only real disadvantages of the ZR compared to Z are the much lower resolution front facing camera (but then again most video calling apps don't do HD and therefore don't make use of a high-res camera), and 8GB internal storage instead of 16GB. That might be a problem if you install a lot of games and the phone doesn't allow to move them to a microSD card. I'm not sure if it allows that or not, so you'll have to check with others.
If you want ROM support, buy Nexus 4 or Xperia ZR. They have PLENTY of ROMs. If you don't care about that so much, you can't go wrong with this phone. You'll also get at least Android 4.3 officially by Sony, if not the next version too.
Hope that helped.

As you can see, XZR is currently still in Low Activity Devices.
I think primarily it's because the fact that it's the 3rd sibling in Xperia Z series.
People are just happy with Z or ZL, or fed up with the releases.
Nevertheless, it offers much features that Z or ZL can't compare with, and that's why I chose it.
ZR is good for smart phone user,
Nexus family is good for rom tester.
yes fellas....
finally considering all the aspects I got it > Xperia ZR...
excited to test it....will do all type of test for what it stands for...

Be careful. My last phone wasn't water resistant and I had to fight hard with Sony to get it replaced.

Hello i am thinking of buying Xperia T but since Android 4.3 is comming out i thought that Xperia T is a bit too old .... shall i buy it or buy something else .
Its pretty cheap for its specs and i think its one of the best phones out there but its is kinda old.
I'd go for the SP now
Exactly, SP is the best buy

Yes, you can buy mine!
Only joking mods.
Seriously, im getting rid of mine for the Moto X. And if i wasnt getting that id get the Nexus 4.
So you suggest me to go with the Xperia SP rather than the Xperia T ???
Xperia T has better camera but Xperia SP is a more pricie in Greece.
Also Xperia T has the SOD issue.
I dont know yet i will compare the two.
And search the thing a bit more.
Edit: I searched the thing and i will probably go with the SP if i have the money.
It has a 1.7 Dual Core proccessor and 4g Technology
But the 8 MP camera should be enough for a person which does not take much photos.
But as for the front camera....Is 0.3 MP enough for Skype calls ???

hey bro, the main interesting part you should go for in SP is GPU, did you know that it has Adreno 320 GPU?!!! the same as the one used in Xperia Z, while the pixel quantity is way less than Xperia Z, so you would see better graphic performance, or AT LEAST the same
no one can compare Adreno 320 (in SP) with Adreno 225 (in T and TX)
don't make my mistake, go for SP
hope that my words come of a service to you, bro

I had the same doubt and i decided to go for T for the following reasons:
1)Better camera (13/1.3 vs 8/vga). Most sp users complain about camera quality.
2)More internal storage 16gb (T) vs 8gb (SP)
3) Also seems there are some problems with touchscreen of the SP.
4)I really like the design of the T.
5)It's true that has an adreno 225 the T but i also took a look on several gaming reviews on youtube and seems there are no lags.
6)Found T for 230 euros and SP for 350 euros.
7)T has cyanogenmod and even if there are no official releases from sony cm will give us probably android 4.3 and 5.0.
8)On some videos of youtube seems that t has better display than SP.
Just my opinion mate.
Thanks but now i am more confused.
As for the price Xperia T 264 EURO and Xperia SP 300 (no bigie there)
SP +
1)Adreno 320
2)Bravia Engine 2
3)Bluetooth 4
4)4G
5)Larger battery (++)
6)CPU
7)Larger Screen
8)Aluminum Frame
9)I like the button
10)Dedicated camera button
SP -
1)Camera
2) Internal
3)Design
4)Pixel Density
(Internal Storage is not a huge deal for me .... because i will have a 16GB external storage and with apps to sd its no biggie)
Know Problems : http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/128963?start=0&tstart=0
Xperia T +
1)design
2)Camera
3)Pixel density
4)Internal Storage
Xperia T -
1)CPU
2)GPU
3)no dedicated camera button
4)Older handset which means it may not get the 5.0 kelimepie update
5)Small Battery
Known Problems : http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Android-Devices-Samsung-HTC-Sony/Sony-Xperia-T-sleep-of-death/td-p/393068

Small battery offers way less fun
But still a good and Cheaper handset.....
I am not sure....
You can't be sure about android 5.0 update.
Xperia t was created as high end device and sp like mid range device.
There are several mods and roms for t currently not available for sp.
Right but i think i will go for the SP because i it will be updateable to 5.0 and it has better specs

No! Buy Xperia T.
No words can describe that! Simply I went to the store and SP wasn't even close to T! I can't explain why.
As somebody said here T is made to be high end, and SP mid range phone.
This is evidence specifications mean nothing!
There's new Honami flagship on the way, price of Z(L) can drop!
Either go with T or with Z(L)
If you want newer Androids, T has good development, go to xda and install.
I think Sony even said older devices (T) is getting 4.3 but I don't know.
The best thing I think is to buy a nexus 4 if you want for sure getting android 5 and 4.3.
Since processors, rams and other stuff change every 6 months and you can't never be sure that you have the best phone of the moment, why don't you buy a phone like Xperia t and a tablet like Google nexus 7? You will have a great phone and an epic tablet for gaming etc. I am thinking to do this way personally.
I cant afford both ( i can barely afford one ) so i will buy the best phone.
But guys personaly i am not taking very many photos (1-2 per 2 or even 3 months and not from people objects and stuff most of the time)
and i need something up to date and very fast with a large screen.(both Sp and T have these things)
I went to the store and meesed with the Xperia Sp for a bit and saw that it fitted my hand well and it did not lag a bit.
When SP gets old (in one year or so ) i will start messing with it (if there are no update to future android versions) like changing the rom or flashing a kernel or even overclocking it so its stays up to date. Also i saw somewhere that SP is designed as a High End device and it will be updateable even in the future android versions (after 5.0)
Also the place where i am buying the phone from has not the Nexus 4 available now.But in no store in my town i found the Nexus 4 ... i dont think it is available in Greece.
Hi everyone, as the title says, I'm thinking of upgrading. But people says SP has a lot of hardware problems.
Further more, do you guys think the upgrade from Xperia V worth it? Aside from the SP's horsepower, which is obviously better, how bout the camera, battery, build quality,..?
Thanks in advance and if possible, please tell me some problems SP usually have so that I can check for it carefully when I buy the phone :good:

hey, SP has its own standard. But, when u r upgrading from V, it wont sound good. V has better camera, IP 57 certified, better PPI, approx almost same processor (V: Dual1.5G; SP: Dual1.7G), same chipset, same RAM, same data rates. SP have a better GPU and battery.SP has bad viewing angles, comparitively bad camera than V. Put some extra bucks and try for Nexus 5. If you prefer only SONY made product, Xperia ZR will be a better option than SP. Nexus 5 and ZR both comes under almost same price bracket. So, decide..:good:

Thanks but water proof is not much use for me. And SP's chipset is wayyy better which is a big advantage over V in my opinion. Bigger batery as well.
In my country Nexus 5 and ZR are a bit overpriced so they wont be an option for me More over, I'm a Sony fan
I would personally wait a little more for Xperia 2014 mid range phone. Xperia V is still a good device, and it will have 4.3. SP is a little more powerful and has a slightly better battery, but Sony won't support it past 4.4. If you can find ZL for cheap where you live, that would be a good option too. Xperia SP's hardware isn't better than your V, screen is worse, the power button tends to break (I already got my SP swapped twice because the power button broke), Wi-Fi reception is very bad, borderline useless. Also, V's camera is much better for sure.
Xperia SP is way better than V imo. Bigger screen, better battery, LED strip. Camera is quite good too (way better than Nexus 4). Hardware is also better (same GPU as Nexus 4, which is very powerful: Adreno 320).
If SP is not a big improvement for you, and you're a Sony fan, I would upgrade to Xperia Z, they are not much more expensivce than SPs. Official CM10.2 is there and CM11 is quite useable for that phone. I'm planning to switch soon.
I had Arc S then i bought Xperia sp and it was big improvement for me but you have dual core phone with 1GB of ram it's not that bad. Like wiidbzxt said wait a little more Sony will probably release some new mid range phone in 2014. Maybe some phone from Z series would be better also over time price will go down.
Stick with your Xperia V and wait few months, that is my opinion .

This is incorrect, the SP has a MSM 8960 Pro Krait Chipset with 1.7 Ghz Dual core plus Adreno 320
The V has 8960 1.5 Ghz Adreno 225
It's 2014, avoid the SP. It was a good phone, but little to no updates makes the hardware useless. I'm selling mine this month. I got tired of trying roms.

I would suggest that you wait for more devices to get released and save enough money for a decent upgrade. There ain't much difference between Xperia V and SP. Also , Xperia SP will soon get discontinued. Sony on the other hand supports a device for 18 Months only after the release date. So Android 4.4 might be THE LAST software update for the phone(SP). Newer phones will be released with atleast Android 4.3 pre installed so that you could enjoy newer updates for the next 18 months. If you want to buy a phone in the coming days (urgently) then get atleast Xperia ZR or Xperia Z. Both the phones are future proof. Or better wait and save enough for Xperia Z1 Compact

Thanks guys,
The problem with Sony phones is, when they've just been released, the price is quite high and then drop about half in 1 year (that's in my country). Me on the other hand is still a student saving money for a newer phone so my options are quite narrow and I have to consider 6 months - 1year old phones.
And I play games on my phone quite often so I really want the GPU update from Adreno 225
But seems like you guys save my day anyway, I think I'm gonna save a little more for ZR or ZL maybe, or another 2014 midrange
@cnkhanh
I can understand that feeling. I myself am a student saving enough money for the next decent upgrade (maybe after 2-3years).
February onwards you'll see alot of devices popping up in the market.
But if you want to buy it urgently, then go for Xperia ZR. There ain't much price difference between SP and ZR. It costs 70 - 80$ more than SP. But it is worth it.
You do get a waterproof , dustproof and shatterproof smartphone with a 13meg camera capable of underwater photography along with 1.5GHZ Quad krait processor . Basically the same features of Xperia Z without the back glass panel and THE BATTERY IS REMOVABLE. And because of its 720p display it performs better than Xperia Z. Also Android 4.3 is available for Xperia ZR.

He's talking about Xperia Z. Now stop spamming all the threads with the same questions. If you want more out of your phone RTFM, it's all there on this forum, all the information you need about all the roms available.
I already gave you an extended answer to that question in another thread too!
On-topic:
Why not wait for the Xperia Z1 Compact? If you want a small phone, otherwise, just get the Z1 in the near future as it will drop price with the new Xperia phones coming or get a new midrange model.
If gaming is important for you I'd at least get a phone with the Adreno 330, that will ahve more support in the near future and will come along just a little longer, I know I'm gonna get myself a Z1 Compact, now owning a Xiaomi M2S and Xperia SP, the SP is too big and the screen quality is ****, especially when next to the M2S.
Or like the comment above, the ZR... well it's all up to you in the end, I still think it's strange people ask for advice when they have to make the decission all alone
You know what you need right?!
I know what I will get next if the screen is better then SP/equal to M2S... the COMPACT
Wait
Yup, Wait, if you can of course, but I would not choose the ZR over SP, I don't need a quad chip of 1,5, 1,7dual is better for me, games run much better, and the SP's got style, i like the design, besides the battery is great, but then again if you need to take pictures under water rather than playing games that's your business, I had no intention of sinking under 30meters under water with my gf to take pics of her or **** konws what else.

Sigh....
There aint no official CM available for Xperia SP right now. But I reckon that a stable build is there on FreeXperia Project website. All CM builds for Xperia SP are posted over there. Even CM 11 (still under development though) has been uploaded on the website.
For GAPPS , google it. Or else go to cyanogenmod website. There you'll find GAPPS for all CM builds

Yea i know i thought the guy above was talking about an official one for the XSP so i just asked him
I also suggest to wait. Upgrading from V to SP is not worth it for the price you're gonna pay. It's too little for an upgrade considering the little advantages the SP has over the V. There are (i think) 7 Sony devices coming this year, 2 of them are midrange devices to replace the SP (D530x) so i think its much better to wait for them.
edit: im gonna get the Z1 this year prices are gonna get low for sure when newer ones come along. But it doesnt matter, it's still the same badass Z1 we know today

The Adreno 320 GPU is multiple times faster than the older Adreno 225 GPU,
the difference is not slight, but a large one.
at the moment though V to a Z upgrade is probably a better choice,

All your requirements are met ok, EXCEPT multitasking.
There is nothing wrong with processor or RAM, but the software (currently 4.1.2) makes a mess of things pretty often. Things close all of a sudden, specially when multiple tabs in browsers, this phone suffers from amnesia...
if u clear recent apps list, walkman closes...
BUT, all of these are expected to be fixed in upcoming 4.3 in a few days. I suggest you wait for that, and then ask us what happened.
Other than that, amazing speed, super fast gaming, awesome battery backup, rich sound and music experience.

if you can, go for the z1 Mini. but its is pricy and no idea on when you will get it. but to the OP theres nothing wrong with the sp, multitasking is OK but 2gb ram would help it out however 1gb is enough. Sony has to get us up to kit kat so we will get it its just a a matter of when we do the camera is pretty good speakers are LOUD walkman player is epic and so is the light bar. i don't think you can find a better mid ranger
i am planning to buy a new xperia SP but the fact that sony stopped manufacturing the device made me stop right there. it is of the same price as the xperia C but it has worse specs except for the quadcore processor. i am basically a gamer guy and i dont like the samsung's shi*ty touchwiz UI. i am completely comfortable with rooting and development but not rich enough o get a high end device every year. every help will me appreciated.

no, find some better alternatives.
If you only want a phone that runs games perfectly then you can buy this phone. It has a powerful processor and gpu and is capable of running high end games. It also features a large battery so you can get good battery life as well.

around 11,000 rupees(approx 185$) i visited sony showroom and they said i can get a new only if someone have it in their stock. but i dont think buying it brand new after the productoin has been long stopped is a good idea. specs wise the phone seems promising. a little modification in the os will turn the beast out of it.

Hi guys. It has been few months already since Xperia Z3+/Z4 was made available. Sony has also given Z3+ some updates to fix its bugs. After few months of use, what is your feedback about Z3+? Is it worth buying? (Unfortunately, Xperia Z5 is way out of my budget so don't suggest that I buy it even if it is so great. Haha.)

Well, that is good to know. I also read some comments from Z3+ users on facebook. According to them, Z3+ gets warm sometimes but only while taking a 4k video and AR mask. Still, I want to know the experience of Z3+ users here in XDA. Haha.
It's like any Xperia Z. It's a solid phone, it gets warm but that is no issue in normal use. Updates are as delayed as usual. And of course, there is never reliable information on their update plans.

I agree on this. I love my aqua green Z3+. It's sleek and minimalist (That's what I like), it doesn't get hot, sometimes warm on web browsing, cpu temp <60C though (might be due to Lollipop bug?). It's responsive with Nova launcher, switching between apps is a breeze and there's no noticeable lag in general. Don't believe what some might say that SD810 is a toaster chip, throttling all the time or superior auto mode is crap. I admit that superior auto do get misses at times (especially for lots of wood/greenery/reds) and manual mode helps but when it works the picture quality is great. I like the gourmet mode, it does detect food magically and the night mode for low light city photos. Recommended with price drop.
Build quality is great imho, I come from Samsung S3, S4 and S5 Mini and Sony is way above those in build quality. WAAY above actually. It´s just extremly solid and wellthought and makes many competitors look like old and more toyish...
My phone has never had the heat problem. I play Hearthstone, Simpsons Tap out and Game of War on mine all the time and it does get warmer but all phones do while gaming. I have recorded atleast 100 clips on highest setting from a few seconds to several minutes and never had any popups about closing app due to heat.
What I do find disturbing is the non existing development scene for this phone I´m a flashohlic from My S4 and HTC Desire HD days and I miss setting up new ROMs to try every other day. I honestly feel this phone is already abandoned and people have moved on to Z5. Damn shame as the phone is pretty darn nice...
Does it self crack?
---------- Post added at 03:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:44 PM ----------
Would you recommend getting this over the HTC M9? Also, I'm quite certain this has way better design than the z5. Shame Sony went for a boxy look this time.
I'm very happy with mine hardware-wise, it is a great device. Finish quality is superior than most brands, I think. The Z3+ is seriously the most premium feel I've ever had with a phone since my 10+ years old Motorola E398. Issues are: gets warm fast depending on what you do, and I wish Sony had upgraded it to the latest Android version. But it did receive one or two updates in the last few weeks, so at least Sony did not forget about it, plus it will be getting Marshmallow.
Honestly I don't see that much difference between the Z3+/Z4 and the Z5. I would recommend it easily.

From the comments that I read in the past, after updating their Z3+ to the latest firmware update, they reformat their phone. According to them, it seems to lessen the heating issue on their Z3+. I don't have Z3+ (sine I'm still choosing between Z3+ and Z5) but I hope my comment can help you
Yeah. How I wish it has many and active developers just like the Xperia Z2 and Z3 have. I hope many developers will realize that this phone is worth the shot

Here in Brazil the Z5 goes for about US$1000, while the Z3+ goes for about US$500 and the Z3/Z3C for about US$400. My Z1 has finally bitten the dust, and I'm looking at these for an upgrade. I honestly cannot justify the cost of the Z5 in any way (heck, you can get an old-but-working CAR for less money!), so that one is out. What I wonder is whether the Z3+ is worth ~20% more than the Z3: the Z3+ has unquestionably better hardware and unquestionably worse development, though FXP will release their CM13 for all supported Krait/A53 phones after Sony gets a Marshmallow build out, so we will have a way out after Sony support abandons the phone. The point is, how usable is the software right now without unlocking the bootloader? And looking at the forums I couldn't get an idea of whether the development is slowing down, heating up or just keeping the same rate, so I ask, how likely is it that development will heat up this year?

I think the Sony software out-of-the-box is perfectly fine to use. I think Sony didn't load a ton of crapware/unwanted software onto Android that it becomes a nuisance although I disabled a few Sony apps that I didn't like or found useless. I'm comparing my experience with software loaded out-of-the-box from a Nexus 4 (my previous phone) to a Sony Xperia Z3+ and it's been a pleasant experience.
I'm not sure what you're looking for in rooting or unlocking the bootloader of a Z3+ but I feel it's unnecessary. I rooted my previous phones to achieve better battery life. With the Z3+, Sony's Stamina mode has been more than sufficient in providing me with that feature, so no need for rooting or unlocking the bootloader.
I don't think the development is going to pick up anytime soon. I've kept up with news sites and forums (XDA and Sony Support Forums) on the Sony Xperia Z3+ and it has a bad reputation because of the Snapdragon 810 causing overheating issues.
No. Don't touch it. This phone is a piece of crap. My last two phones, both $30 cheapos from metro out perform this high tech blunder. this is the worst buying decision I have ever made.
Battery life? I'm lucky if it lasts 3 hours.
