Wifi Issues? - Moto X Q&A

Is anyone else having an issue where your device will be hooked up to a wifi network, will still indicate you're connected but no data will sync? I email myself and nothing happens. Happens with FB, Email, Gmail, and Voice Controls don't work.

I have that issue with my gNex and my wife's DNA on our home network. I don't think it is necessarily this phone, but I am not convinced (yet) that it is my router, either...

It comes and goes, it looks almost app specific. I say Hello Google Now, and it seems to lock up on recognition or says it can't connect to google....but I'm able to browse the internet.

Yeah I've been having a ton of WiFi issues with this phone.

I called Moto and after dealing with their terrible level 1 support I got the following:
HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOING THE WIPE CACHE PARTITION:
This will remove any temporary files that may be causing the problem, but will not delete your files or settings.
1. With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.
2. The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS
3. Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select
Tip: If the device reboots, you may have waited to long to make a selection, you will need to begin the process again.
4. The device will display the Motorola logo and then the Android in distress ( logo with Exclamation mark)
5. Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key
Tip: You can try this step, holding the phone in landscape. If you are stuck on step 6, try a force reboot by pressing the Power key and Vol Down key, and start the process again.
6. The device will display additional menu options (Text will appear in BLUE)
7. Use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll to wipe cache partition and the POWER Key to select this option
8. The device will then perform the partition wipe
9. The device will reboot and start the normal power up sequence
Ever since it hasn't had any problems, but it's only been a few hours as well.

The issues started happening again...turned off wifi and everything resynced perfectly...

If it doesn't work properly with a different router try exchanging it. Also have you gone into advanced WiFi settings and forced the moto x to 2.4 GHz? If give that a try.

The force to 2.4ghz actually made the problem occur a lot faster, any reason it might be due to the massive amount of wifi networks around? When I set to scan 5 ghz there was only one still open, I might go into my router and see if I can change the atenna settings.
EDIT: Turns out if I go to 5 ghz my computer can't connect, but I changed the channel to something less populated in the area to see if that helps.
DOUBLE EDIT: It appears to occur after I'm supposed to get a Facebook notification, at that point I don't get any more notifications....attempting to clear out facebook data and cache to see if that does anything

Try disabling WMM on your router.

Forgive the stupid, but what's WMM short for in case that's not readily apparent?
Edit: I've also noticed the problem is exponentially worse after I upload pictures to facebook
Edit Edit: Found WMM, turned it off, let's see what happens.

I has this kind of issue before and did a cold boot but nothing happaned. so my last option was to do a restore. After that, my WIFI connection got okay again. problem solved :silly:

You mean full reset? It looks like I may have to do that with the idle battery drain issue anyways....so that's the last resort.

Hey guys I'm having a similar issue with my moto x on the 2.4ghz band. Speeds are very slow and sometimes cut out completely. Im getting a download speed of about 300kb/s on 2.4 both on auto channel and it doesn't rlly change once I change it manually to an open channel using WiFi analyzer app. My download speeds on 5ghz hit 4000kb/s even with a much lower signal strength.
YouTube and Netflix is unusable and growing the internet sucks. I usually just use the 4g network while at home cuz its a thousand times faster but I'd like this to be fixed regardless. Has anyone found a solution or explanation?

I'm having these issues too. Got the GSM Developer Edition on 11/29. It immediately updated to Kit Kat OTA so I'm not sure whether it had the issue prior to Kit Kat or not. This only happens on 2.4 ghz wifi and only with one of my routers at home, a Netgear WNDR3700v2 running OpenWrt Attitude Adjustment (I tried upgrading from Backfire to see if it would help, it did not). The other router is a Linksys WRT350N and when the phone is connected to that one the problem does not happen. Note, that there are 2 laptops, a Samsung Galaxy S2, and a Kindle Fire HDX that have zero problems with the WNDR3700. All can transfer data perfectly fine and at high speeds. Thus I do not think the router is bad. Have not checked work routers. 5 ghz wifi is totally fine and indeed very good with this phone.
For me, the problem is that the phone seems unable to receive data at high speed (over 1Mbps) on 2.4 ghz wifi in any area where the signal isn't perfect and sometimes even in the same room as the router (although usually it is fine there). Oddly in many cases when it has trouble receiving it can send data much faster. It almost seems like it might be some kind of interference as it is rather random.
At this point I'm wondering if the phone has a defective 2.4ghz subsystem, though that seem unlikely due to good transfer with the WRT350N, or if this is some kind of wifi tuning software bug in the phone.
Any info would be appreciated. Does anyone have this issue who did not have the issue on Jellybean? Am wondering if anything changed with wifi for the update? Note, I have tried clearing the cache in recovery as noted in another thread with no luck. Anyone have the WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini file from Jellybean for this phone? Would rather not reflash just for 1 file.
Thanks.

For what it's worth I have this same Netgear router and have had the same connectivity issues on both 4.2.2 and 4.4.
I did some reading today and found a couple possible fixes I plan on trying out. First one is to disable WMM. Secondly I found on the official netgear forums that they have had major issues (some of which you've described) with all firmwares ending in the .30s and went so far as to pull them from their download section.
My router was running firmware .36 and I successfully downgraded it to the latest stable firmware .12 that netgear now recommends.
Hopefully 1 of those 2 fixes improves the performance, at any rate I really think it's something with the router itself and not the moto x.
Sent from my XT1060 using xda app-developers app

Thanks for letting me know this was also an issue on 4.2.2. Saves me the trouble of flashing back just to test.
I will be interested to know if your using official netgear 1.0.0.12 firmware fixes the issue for you. I haven't actually ever used the official firmware as I've run OpenWRT since I got the router a year or two ago. 10.03.1 had the issue, and it appears 12.09 does as well. I may try a trunk build at some point to see if that changes anything.
I had previously written that all was well on the 5 ghz band. This appears to not be 100% correct. Yesterday evening and this morning I found myself "connected" to the 5ghz band without actually having working internet. Toggle wifi on/off fixes it, but I shouldn't have to do it.
Not sure if this helps, but on the 2.4 ghz side things do work better on one side of the house vs the other. Also it seems that I can get a very fast connection at times and then it stumbles and gets stuck going under 1 Mbps. I still suspect either a defect or some kind of low level radio issues with the moto or the router regarding interference from neighboring wifi access points (there are a lot around me, single family houses on small lots). However, keep in mind no other device has these issues but the moto. In the rare instance I venture into a bad signal pocket the signal indicator goes down and speed slows or they lose connection vs the moto where it can show excellent signal and have no/nearly no connectivity.
I haven't tried it for long, but switching to wireless g mode vs ng may improve stability though I only briefly tried it. I did walk around part of my house checking the Mbps with the app "WiFi Speed Test" and while way slower than N mode it was far more stable. Even if this does work it is a definate downgrade in speed though.

Well its only been a day or two so it may be too early to tell, but so far my wifi seems much better after making those two fixes I mentioned above. This is on 2.4 band, the 5ghz band doesn't provide me enough signal strength to use all the time (router is too far from my bedroom).
The main issue I was having was my wifi signal would cut out even though it still showed a good connection. I could swipe down on the status bar and see no download arrow next to the wifi icon so I knew I wasn't receiving data. However a simple disconnect and reconnect to my wifi would fix the problem until it happened again. This seemed to be most common while watching YouTube videos, in fact it happened far too often which is why I went searching for a solution.
So as I mentioned things seem to be better for sure so far but I need to give it a week or so to see how much it is really helped, but so far I can't remember any wifi cutting out since I've made those two fixes.

[Q] Any Issues with WiFi

Loving the phone really, one thing i have noticed is when ever im downloading or uploading large files through my home WIFI after a short period the phone disconnects from the network and i have to reconnect manually. Any ideas is anyone else having the same issue. All my other devices are fine
Same thing here, but it reconnects itself - just losing the connection for 1-2 seconds. It happens sometimes even when browsing the web. Most likely some kind of software bug.
Had similar symptoms when playing with the phone at work`s WiFi (1st day of usage). On my home WiFi nothing wrong at all.

I found that WiFi is one of the most power draining things on phones. The best thing would be to switch to mobile data while sleeping and turn wifi off during that time.
That way you can still receive everything, but since you're sleeping you will barely use any data at all.
To bad the phone can't do that automatically.
I'm getting frequent wifi drops in my home (netgear router, wpa psk security) and its also affecting other devices in the house! Other wifi networks I've connected to seem to be fine, no issues whatsoever. Sometimes it'll say its connected, but no data, other times it will disconnect entirely.
This is a VERY strange problem and the fact that its affecting the wifi connection to other devices is even stranger.
Just an update on this, I returned my phone to P4U this morning as the wifi thing was annoying me and the phone has eaten 823mb of mobile data in one weekend even though i had mobile data turned off and connected to WIFI, The handset said i used 115mb and Voda said 823mb. not the only reason i returned it but it needed changing. So got my new handset up and running this afternoon and im set up and i been downloading all my files and apps with out any problems.
So looks like i had a dud phone first time around.

Getting the same problem too. All my other devices (Nexus7, Ipad, PC) can connect fine to my wireless home network (fibre). But when I start connecting my Xperia Z to the wireless network, after 5 mins, my Gateway will hang, and restart itself. Happens all the time without fail as long as I have my phone hooked up to the wireless network.
Anyone else facing this problem?? I'm kinda at a loss now on how to solve it. Tried adjusting settings on my wireless channel too but doesn't seem to help. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Ok, so i reckon this could be an issue with not having a static I.P address. Gonna change it tonight when I get home and see if the problem is solved. It's either that or it may be trying to connect to a port thats used for something else? Have ports assigned for my Xbox ect. I'm not too knowledgeable about these things so any other suggestions are welcome. Not too many settings on the phone unfortunately so the problem has to be solved using the router I'd say.

I have static ip set up since the beginning, and I also have the problems. Only my problem seems to stem from 2.4 GHz/ 5 GHz (if this is even possible). 5 GHz is the preferred one, but this one seems to be out of range sometimes and it switches to mobile data. The 5 GHz is then out of range, while the 2.4 GHz is not. Very strange.
Ive found the Xperia Z has held on to a 5GHz Wi-Fi signal better than any other device I've used before, but the 2.4GHz can often disappear...
Very odd, although at home I am quite happy that 5GHz works better as there's far less interference from local neighbours. Perhaps that's causing the problem - in that the XZ isn't so well set up to cope with other routers on the same Wi-Fi channels??
The reach of my 2.4 GHz is at 75%, while 5 GHz is at 50%??? Strange.
I would always expect 2.4GHz to carry further, and so I am surprised by my experience too.
In my case, there's only 1 5GHz router visible other than mine, but countless 2.4GHz ones. Not sure why that would make the XZ drop (and sometimes even lose) the connection - but that's what seems to be happening.
Xperia Z no wi-fi without SIM
I have a different wi-fi issue with my Xperia Z. It does not connect to my home wi-fi when there is no SIM in the phone. It just says that the network is out of reach. When I pop in the SIM card, it connects automatically. Actually, all the hi-end Sony phones I tried recently do this (Ion, T and more). I've been looking for a solution here on the forum, but didn't find any helpful topic. But maybe I was looking wrong. Does anyone know, what to do?

I think the obvious answer is put a SIM in there... and if that means getting any old SIM and cutting it to size, even if it's not registered on any network, then do that.
I wonder if it the phone is looking at the SIM to identify the country, and therefore what channels can be used? I say this because when I first used the phone (without SIM) I also had problems [router not showing up in a scan], and my router is on channel 13. I then put in a SIM and at some stage did another scan and it found my router.
Is your router perhaps on channel 11, 12 or 13?
I know it's a long shot, but who knows?

Interesting point, will try to investigate with the channels. And I may also try to dig out some inactive SIM, thanks for the tip... The only thing I found is, that the problem obviously appears only with the WPA2-PSK security. With WPA, its all a-OK...
If you look inside the build.prop
The wifi.channel is not assigned, maybe this can gives you an idea guys.

Moto X WiFi problems

I had about 7 Android devices, all utilizing my home wifi network without any problems, before I bought my Moto X. When I use my Moto X on my home wifi, and I go into Google Play Store, I get a lot of connection errors when browsing around, looking for apps to download. Images either load slowly or not at all, and it will sometimes say that there is "No connection" and it gives me a button to "Retry". All the while, my wifi connection never disconnects. I also notice other things like delays opening websites in Chrome - delays that I never see on my other Android devices (which have much less processing power)... Or issues like Google Maps not loading all of the images when I shift to another grid section on the map.
I'm using an old-but-stable Linksys WRT54G as my wireless access point. The signal usually stays in between 50-100%. Just to be clear, I have *zero* network issues on the 10-20 devices connected in my household. I only have issues on my Moto X.
Is anyone else having similar issues?
I have the Verizon Moto X and I've noticed my WiFi going crazy a couple times. When I turn wifi on when I'm home, sometimes it will turn on them immediately turn off again. Then when I turn it back on it takes about 30 seconds for it to start trying to connect to my WiFi.
Sent from my XT1060 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
OK but that's very different from what i'm describing
I had a similar issue with my HTC one. And that was because my WiFi was on auto channel. And the HTC was operating at its very limit of band frequency. Everything would slow to a crawl.
I solved the issue by changing router to be channel 6. Could be worth a shot
Sent from my XT1058 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I've had just the opposite results. I have a Belkin n600 dual band wireless router, and surprisingly, when I first enabled WiFi on my Moto X, it displayed a 5GHz SSID that I had set up a while ago and never use because none of my devices use 5GHz--until now. I get a solid, stable connection with my Moto X, and speed tests rock. I've had zero issues with Internet connectivity, and connecting to my home server to stream music (with ES File Explorer) has been solid and stutter-free.
When I use the WiFi Analyzer app, I have about 16 visible neighboring access points, but all are on 2.4GHz. My 5GHz connection is truly wide open.
I've had similar issues, the wifi wouldn't stay connected but said it would, but eventually all notifications would flood in at once. Turning it off and on would resolve it, hopefully it gets resolved quickly.

Cisco/Linksys E4200. I don't experience these issues on my VZW Galaxy Nexus or 2012 Nexus 7 Wifi. If it helps, I think I still have my good old Linsys WRT54G and could try setting that up again.
Just like to add my voice to those having no issues with wifi on their Moto X. Also, I spend 90% of my day on wifi with it so I have tested it significantly.

so far the only really visible problem is the errors on Google Play Store. so if you're constantly on Play Store and you never get the white screen with the "Retry" button, then yes i would agree you are having no issues. otherwise i'm not so sure you would know there was a problem.

I seem to have a lot of latency when loading FB (blank images) or when opening the G+ Photos app. If I disconnect Wifi and use my 4G connection, everything loads almost instantly. The weird thing is that when I'm connected to Wifi and I run a Speedtest, I consistently see 20+ Mbps down and 5-6 Mbps up so everything seems to be fine.
FYI, I've already tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45335708&postcount=5
When that didn't work, I restored my phone.

I seem to have a lot of latency when loading FB (blank images) or when opening the G+ Photos app. If I disconnect Wifi and use my 4G connection, everything loads almost instantly. The weird thing is that when I'm connected to Wifi and I run a Speedtest, I consistently see 20+ Mbps down and 5-6 Mbps up so everything seems to be fine.

yep, that fits the bill alright.

WiFi speeds slow when Bluetooth is on !!

I know this has been discussed with other devices, but I have yet to see a solution, so I'll post here and am willing to try anything to resolve this issue.
I have tried all I could think of, clearing cache out, checking for conflicting devices, tried uninstalling some apps I think my be the culprit, rebooting the device, the router, and the Modem etc..... The problem still occurs, I'm not sure if this started since the 5.1 update or prior, all I can say I only noticed it a few days ago, when I decided to do a Speedtest, I know I have done Speedtest before, and never noticed this issue.
Once I'm connected to WiFi and my Bluetooth is turned on, my WiFi speeds are slow and bounce from 2Mb's to 5 Mb's, and when I say bounces the speeds go up and down during the process. As soon as I turn Bluetooth off the speeds are back above the 30 Mb's.
I have tried many of the recommendations around, but have yet to find a solution, Is it a LP issue ?? any other device I have connected I have no issues, I even have a back up Huawei, on LP, and have no issues when BT is turned on. Heck, even my wife's 1st Gen Moto X has no issues. Since I only realized this recently, today when I get to work I will try it when I get to work and see if it does the same on WiFi there when BT is turned on.
Any suggestions would be great.
Does it still happen after a factory reset?

Yes, same result.
Well I can tell you it's either a rogue app, causing it, or LP 5.1, It did the same at work today, so I know it's not the router issue
Change your router channel to something manual, lock it to one frequency. You can check a less congested channel with "WiFi analyzer" by "farproc"
It's the best one I know at least.
Both WiFi and Bluetooth do channel hopping, I've had this happen a lot at work where there's a ton of wireless devices nearby.
My bluetooth mouse will start to lag on my laptop and things like that, I guess both devices are attempting to hop channels and end up doing it at the same time, to the same band over and over causing this issue.
Wifi will grind to a halt on any devices connected to your router because wifi isn't really designed to switch channels often.
If you can upgrade to 5Ghz that will definitely solve your problem, but you have to go with a high end router that has some proper TX output at 5G.

I can switch to5GHZ, but from what I recall the range drops if I do so, also can BT be assigned a channel also, I guess this would help resolve the issue if this is the cause ?? If BT still hops, it will simply be a matter of time when it hops on the channel my router is set to ??

Wi-Fi Keeps Dropping in 5.1

How the F do I fix the wi-fi in 5.1? The thing drops every 10-15 minutes and sits there saying “Obtaining IP Address”. It has nothing to do with the router because it does this at work and home and only started after updating to lollipop. I’ve factory reseted my phone and everything.

Do you have a bluetooth switched on? Try to turn off it. I have this issue too, and don't fix it at now..
I also have this issue. It will work fine and then suddenly it doesnt. I have to turn the wifi off and then back on again and it works fine.
I know of 2 other people with this phone that have the same issue.
No solution but just wanted to let you know I'm having the same issue. Definitely not related to the server/router.
Same problem here, will try out the bluetooth toggle later today.
Tried the bluetooth off and it doesn't help any.
It's the main reason i switched to CM12 and since I have no more wifi issue.
Not router related for sure. I've been looking at logcat too but found nothing (but I'm not an expert)
Model XT 1052 retail rooted and initial rom was something ....o2.de
Yea if I wasn’t so close to just pulling the trigger on the Nexus 5x I’d probably switch too. I’m worried about trying to sell the dang phone though and someone complaining because the wifi doesn’t work worth a crap.
same problem cm12.1
I'm also with the same problem in CM12.1 , wifi drops or speed decreases dramatically whenever I connect Bluetooth headset
My wife's phone does the same thing. I found that by going into advanced settings and setting a static ip for our home network
@Danielson01 I have a pebble connected in BT all day long. Which CM do you use ? I'm on 20151007 snapshot.
Power profile is set to "Balanced" (not sure of the translation).
At home my IP address have always been static (router setting)
Router Wifi channel is 11.
Please share some of this information (IP setting, power management and so on). Maybe we can find the guilty one ?

Hello!!! User'm new and I can not post images yet, so I will try to describe the problem.
I use cyanogem mod version 12.1 is specifically:
cm-12.1-20151007-SNAPSHOT-YOG4PAO332-ghost.zip
battery is in balanced mode.
Bluetooth device I use and a philips shp9100 headset
when I hear a song on the poweramp the download rate drops dramatically when the play store down something or when I see the youtube videos is too slow catching all the time that the WiFi 2.4 GHz, since the network 5ghz is normal.
Note: I do not speak English and am using google translator excuse for the mistakes committed.

Just an FYI. I set the ip on the phone itself versus a static dchp lease on the router. This rules out dhcp which I believe is the issue on my wife's moto x.
Also having the same issue where it drops and comes back or speed slows really bad. Overall quite disappointed in Moto for taking so long and releasing 5.1 with so many significant bugs. 5x may be in my near future!

A quick update. The wife's phone had the issue again last night. Toggling airplane mode fixes it every time but then I have to listen to her complain.
Hey Guys and Gals.
Same issue here... On KITKAT wifi worked perfectly fine. After updating to 5.1 (clean install) wifi keeps dropping quite frequently.
Tried various "solutions" like setting up static IP, changing wifi channel, choosing only 2,4GHz frequency. None of them worked.
Searching through the Internet brings a lot of different forums (phones) with similar issue, so it may not be Motorola specific.
Nevertheless Motorola should have taken care of this but before they rolled out 5.1 update...

Galaxy Tab S2 5g wifi troubles

Hi, is this the spot to ask about problems with the stock tablet? If not, I'm sorry. If, so please help!
So, I got a tab s2 for christmas. So far I'm loving it, except it will not stay connected to 5g wireless for long! Sometimes it will kick me out every half hour or so of continuous usage, other times it will kick me every 5 minutes. The connectivity problem seemed at first like I just had to adjust something with my network except that any other device that uses the 5g signal does not have that problem! ALSO, sometimes when it hangs it completely freezes the tablet and I have to do a hard reboot (power and vol down buttons) to make it usable again.
At one point I was in the wifi settings page and saw the wifi toggle go grey. It NEVER reconnected after 3 or 4 reboots! Is there something wrong with this particular tablet or is this some sort software issue?
My router is a netgear r6250 fwiw.
Try changing channels on the router, you may have interference on the channels it's using
You can use InSSider to check for channel congestion.

I have been using Netgear Wifi Analytics to figure out my wifi dropping. I have no trouble with signal in the house...None of my other wifi devices are having trouble! As a matter of fact, just a little while ago, while testing the wifi on the tablet, the signal dropped. I pressed the home button then the whole tablet froze again. Instead of hard rebooting it, I decided to leave it alone to try to get it to unfreeze on its own. It did after about a minute...BUT the area near the volume and power buttons are was pretty warm/hot. The battery also lost nearly 8% in that time as well!
Does this particular one I have just simply have a bad wifi switch/modem/antenna?
I have the same issue. SM-T810 keeps dropping wifi connection to my netgear r7000. Both 2g and 5g. None of my other devices have the issue. Seems to occur a lot with chrome or anything else that saturates the wifi link.
I'd suggest getting the tablet replaced. I've disabled the 2.4GHz mode on two of my routers (ASUS AC66U and ASUS TM-AC1900) and my Tab S2 never had any troubles with 5GHz on these routers.
Anyway, no matter what obscure configuration your router might have, it shouldn't cause the whole device to freeze. Unless Samsung seriously screwed something up, even if the wifi driver crashed (in the worst case), the worst that would happen is that Android won't let you turn on the wifi.
I replaced mine yesterday and the new one is just fine!
I called the Samsung help line, described the symptoms and they said it sounded like a hardware fault rather than a software issue - took my reference number back to place of purchase and swapped it over for a new one. The new one has had zero issues, has not disconnected from wireless once or frozen and even just general browsing seems smoother - the first one definitely had some issue with the wifi bit.
This without even rebooting the R7000 router between the last bout of freezing and disconnections with the old tablet this morning and then starting to download all my apps and settings and wireless sync of 2 gig of data for the new tablet without a single hiccup two hours later. So the router or signal are not the issue.

It sucks, but I'm glad I'm not the only one that had issues!
