hi I got a samsung galaxy note n7000 last week on ebay. The seller wrote in his advertisement, that the camera doesn't work, so I knew what I was buying. Every time I open the camera app (or any other apps that use the camera; front and back) the app freezes, the screen is black (apart from the camera functions and the viewfinder) and then tells me "camera failed" and closes. I have tried to go into app settings to force the app to close and clear cache but nothing. I also flashed several different stock roms (from gingerbread to jellybean with factory reset and clear cache in the hidden android menu before phone start). But no luck either. I even bought a new rear camera and installed it, in hope it would solve the problem (which it didn't) but it must be software related, as the front camera doesn't work either.
Any idea guys as to what I can do to get the camera working again? Phone is updated with the latest software and so are all the apps. I checked with memory card and without and formatted memory card and phone...PLEASE HELP :'(
Thank you in advance for your help.
Val
PS. I know about flashing and using odin, I have also rooted a phone before but you need to explain anything in detail for me please as otherwise I will have to ask stupid questions over and over. Thank you!!!
Replacing the camera module should have helped. If you have tried different ROMs, it sounds to me like it is a motherboard issue. Maybe a fried circuit or something.
If thats it, then trying to fix it is a waste of time, sorry...
how do you install the rom? do you perform on save kernel the formats?

Well, that's where the rest of this forum comes handy. Read the rules, learn to search, and you'll figure it out. I promise you, no one will give you details on how to install a Rom, the information you need is easy to find with a simple search. Good luck!

Then it's "how _DID_ you install the rom" not "do". If you can't use the correct grammar, you're bound to be misunderstood.

No I haven't fixed it. I flashed jellybean stock Rom via odin . How would a circuit burn out? Overheating? Could I have flashed the wrong Roms? Though the rest of the phone is working fine. How can I see if it's a burnt out circuit? Thank's for all your advice guys.

np, but you did a full wipe on save kernel and flashed official rom right?
Dr ketan posted service manual guides that have the blueprints of the inner workings. Then you would have to take it appart and manual inspect it, check if connectors and touchpoints are alligned. At this point I would check Samsung service centres or a local electrician repair shop. They have the equiptment.
However flashing original old gb rom with pitfile just to check with that wipe. Then download logcat viewer and check what logs say when you startup the camera, and try to take a picture. Should state something as well
Hey thanks for your fast reply. I'm not home right now so I cannot do what you've suggested. When flashing, I flashed the pit file via odin that I downloaded via Google search of 'jelly bean stock room samsung galaxy note n7000'. Before flashing I have always performed a wipe cache and factory reset in the secret android menu. You said about flashing safe kernel. What exactly does that mean? I have seen many posts mentioning safe kernel but couldn't find an explanation as to what I need to do. Thanks

np here to help
read dr ketans thread stickied in general or original development . There you have links to pitfile and gb roms.
Pick the one with same csc csc = 3 letter code obtained by dialing *#272*youremeihere#
if you are root backup efs on and off the phone asap btw lol
Why gb just to be sure its not the rom you are flashing.

based on that error a few workarounds could work. I recommend backup efs on and off computer. And try gb rom with pitfile.
If you are root and on Phills kernel, head into recovery, format everything in mounts, cache, factory reset and somewhere dalvik cache. (so take out external sd card before)
Then flash with odin via dr ketans way a for your country csc gb rom with pitfile. All in dr ketans stickied thread. During this keep sim and sd card out, also after.
Then when gb boots check your camera, does it work victory. Ditch the jb rom your flashed and get a original one from dr keyans thread or sammobile.
If it doesnt work, dial *2767*3855# that will perform a factory reset. Then in settings/storage format sd. Try again! Yes victory, not then its definately hardware error.
During this process do no recover any backups or syncs with google.
Untill all above fails then proceed with checking with service manuals if camera is properly attached and or you see abnormalities on hardwareboard. Then you need a electrician or Samsung to fix it. lol
Ok I'll try that. Sorry but what is csc gb room? Is this the flash file I'll find in Dr keatons sticky? Are you allowed to post a link to said post? Found one by Dr keaton but I'm unsure if it's the right one... Grateful for your help

csc the true csc is obtainable via dialing *#272*yourimeihere#
your emei is *#06#
gb is gingerbread rom,
csc is a three letter code that signifies country sales code, most efs corruption comes from flashing different csc roms. Which is why efs backup is important, only needed once, to backup on and of with e.g. ktool. Save if from your sd to computer so you wont loose it when you do the formats.
hope this fixes it

sorry didn't mean to write it wrong but on the phone app you can't see what's previously been said. Anyway *#272*myimei# doesn't work. i get a message saying "connection problem or invalid MMI code" I have full signal...that can't be the problem. my phone is a UK version and I have always used the UK roms to flash.
Thanks for your great advice
in that case if you have efs backup it shouldnt matter to much. Try the uk one indeed. Best the earliest possible, as its directly roottable as per dr ketan. Should you need root.

Jm9 can be downloaded from samfirmware.com use pit 512.
Or try flashing cm7 from recovery first.
Worth a bash. I'd be very surprised if jm9 didn't work though.

I believe this could be a limitation of the ROM or the service you are using. Search the developer forum for a ROM that gets past this limit and check with your phone service provider (I read somewhere that Verizon has this limit, but can't vouch for that as I am in different country)
thanks, but I am new to this whole android world, this is my first android coming from a nokia n900.
I have been reading, but it seems I need to root my phone which is now difficult because as soon as I received the phone i updated it and now have the kernel LA6 instead of original LA4 which is more difficult to root.
As for the thread you provided matius44, does the .apk file only work with ics roms or can one install it with just a rooted GB rom.
----
Just so I can be sure, I do want to root, but I'm slightly confused, is it correct in saying that I need to downgrade the fw and kernel to an older stock rootable rom then root the phone? or is this wrong?

That used to be the case, but there is now an easier way which flashing pre rooted ROMs directly and you're good to go, here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
As for the .apk mod, I never tried myself honestly but there are versions for GB and for ICS, any .apk with ZCLP in it's name is for ICS you don't need that, take the other ones
I've tried dr. ketan's way and it didnt work for me, maybe i didnt know what I was doing,
Ill try these pre rooted roms, I just basically flash them to the phone, does all my data in my phone get wiped off clean? if so, what do i use to make a backup.
btw sorry for all these questions.
and thanks in advance.
It's been that long since I rooted my phone I've forgotten how to do a backup without rooting! Titanium backup needs root.
Have you tried booting into recovery mode then doing a backup from the menu that appears (vol up+home then press power until Galaxy Note boot screen appears then let go of all buttons) I'm pretty sure you can backup from there.

You can have it either ways, wiped clean or not, up to you..
At the pre rooted ROMs thread there is a screen shot showing the three file you will find in the zips and the places they should be put at in Odin, if you do NOT want to wipe your data do NOT choose the CSC file, only flash PDA and phone (modem)
Or you can use Titanium Backup to backup your user apps only, do NOT backup system apps but your settings will be lost of course
Your preference
EDIT: Sorry forgot you don't have root lol! Sorry have no idea how to backup without root, try the poster above me suggested
Congrats Matius! 1000 posts! That is great work!
no you can't backup using that method, it just give me options to reboot, wipe everything off and some other things. all i need to backup is mainly my contacts and some data, ill try kies.
Kies should work. I wish I could remember what I did to create the backup - I've done a quick google and only found using adb and a terminal prompt, which I have never used. A quick search of Google Play shows some that may be worth a try and are free.
Wish I could be more help but for the life of me can't remember what I did that first night with my Note and got it to backup.
Good luck with Kies and enjoy flashing ROMs!
even kies doesnt work. i think astro backup will backup my files, as for settings ill just have to deal with it.
OK - good luck!
BTW - If you get heat issues after flashing - don't panic! Leave the phone off for five to ten minutes to cool down then charge it for an hour with the screen off. I found this was my biggest worry when I started flashing. Got really hot - thought the screen would melt. Now I just use the above process and never have problem.
All the best!

Hello everyone, thanks for taking your time and reading this.
I've owned a Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000 for about two years now. This phone is not my primary phone, as I just use it as a secondary phone for different apps/backup, most of the times the phone is turned off.
But a few days ago, I turned the phone on, and once the homescreen had loaded, around 20-30 seconds later, the phone will freeze, and there's nothing else you can do other than take the battery out to turn it off.
A few details about the phone: the phone has never been flashed, and the OS has never been touched. It's basically at stock, but the only thing I remember is updating the official firmware through the Samsung link in the settings. The phone has never been modded, and that's what bugs me the most. (I've never had experience with 'modding' phones with custom ROMS and such)
So, after sitting at home all day looking for a fix, I couldn't find anyone else in my situation. There are a few similar situations, but I am yet to find something that replicates my problem exactly.
I've also tried rebooting the phone in many different ways, for example, taking out the memory card, then taking out the sim card, then taking them both out completely.
That's when I found a link which gave me information on how to factory reset the device. Since nothing else was working, I decided to go for it.
I held the VOLUME UP button + the HOME button, and hit the power button and got the menu up.
The menu works fine, I was flicking through the options for 10 whole minutes just to check if it freezes or not, and it works perfectly fine.
So then I factory reset the phone, wiped the system cache, and I also formatted the internal SD card.
Still, the problem persists. This time, the phone will reboot for a little while longer, since I expect the system files are getting set up, then it asks for the language, and before I can hit English, it freezes, and the screen stays like that until the battery is dead. All the hardware buttons don't do anything, it's basically fully dead with the screen still on the OS menu.
I was wondering if anyone knows what I should do?
I can provide more information if needed, and I can even upload a video to YouTube if you want a better aspect of the problem.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Ah, sorry, got the title completely messed up there.
Yes it's the GT-i9000 and I think it had Froyo 2.2.1, forgot to include that in the main text.
Could try Rooting the phone and wiping all options in Recovery and Reboot
or
Could be that something maybe corrupted which is halting the system
Upload a video so that we can offer better advice
Which Rom / Firmware are you using?
Last option.
Would Recommend Downloading Rom (whichever you choose) and go from there....
Major UPDATE:
Okay, so after sticking at it the whole day and trying to get a better understanding of this situation, I've managed to work around the problem slightly. It's not fixed yet, though.
So after the screen had frozen for the (insert number here)th time, the battery was starting to go empty, so I stuck it on charge, but I forgot that I had left the frozen screen on (currently frozen on the 'Language Select' set up menu).
After about 20 minutes, the phone vibrated and a little message popped up, and it said that 'the process Soundhound.com.xxx.xxx was force closed', or something along the lines. I can't remember fully because it popped up for only around 4 seconds and disappeared.
As soon as I saw that, I quickly went to the application settings and deleted all of the soundhound cache/data and then removed the app completely. After that I thought it was fixed for sure, so I was messing around with the phone and using different apps to see if it freezes again, and it didn't.
But I had to restart the phone to see if the freeze issues happened again, and yep, it was there again, this time the same as the first issue, where it used to freeze up in the home screen. AND, I let it sit on the frozen screen for 15 minutes and it was that SAME soundhound app that got force closed, so once it got out of the frozen state, I quickly went to the application settings and the app was still there, it was like I didn't even delete it?
This leads to my new problem, the so called 'hard factory wipe/reset' doesn't actually reset EVERYTHING. As seen in my other post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305825
Now I'm completely confused as to what I should do.
I've pretty much tried everything, and i'm sure a FULL hard reset where EVERYTHING gets wiped out might just fix it? The thing is though, I don't know how? I've been trying to fix this phone for about 7 hours straight now.
My opinion Flash a Stock Rom or what ever you wish and then Root it...
If selling it just dont bother with Rooting it.
As you say you have been at it for Several hours and flashing takes less than an hour even for a newbie if following the procedure correctly
As going by what you say it seems that files are messed up on the phone and better to start fresh

Is there a legit way to flash it, maybe through Samsungs website? I don't want to mess around with custom files, as I would like to keep everything clean.
Oh, and also, I just went through the media files and found some of my old pictures too. So for some reason, the 'format internal SD' option in the recovery menu isn't working.
If I flash it, will I have to flash it to Froyo 2.2.1 which it is currently in right now?
Here's information I found on the 'About phone' menu:
Kernel version:
2.6.32.9
[email protected] # 1
Build number:
FROYO.XXJPY
Baseband version:
i9000XXJPY

Thanks.
Briefly read your guide, and it's all mind boggling to a newbie like me :silly: lol
I might just have to flash it, because this problem is getting a little bit annoying now.
Which parts of your guide should I follow exactly? And shouldn't I be sticking Froyo 2.2.1 back in? Won't a newer firmware (such as the 2.3.6) make the phone slower/drain more battery than usual?
Oh and one last thing, what's the difference between rooting and flashing a phone? Cheers.
Rooting briefly means :
Giving yourself root access to system files and the ability to change things that normally are marked read only
This allows you to change all kinds of things that normally you wouldn't be able to
Flashing : Erm.. Flashing a new Rom on your Phone or the process of over-writing your internal memory
2.3.6 will be ok for you if you wish to stay just Stock on your phone.
Plus the fact if you wish to move to another Rom later on its just a matter of Rooting the Phone and installing the Custom Rom
Just follow guide from the : HOW TO GUIDE : TUTORIAL TO FLASH 2.3.6 JVU + ROOT BEFORE INSTALLING CUSTOM ROM
and you will be ok.

So the 2.3.6 Firmware you provide, is that known a 'custom firmware'?
I've been searching for YouTube videos with people explaining how to flash, but all the videos sound like they're speaking about some rocket science sh** lol
Now I'm super confused, some guy on YouTube is flashing to 2.3.6 JVT while you're doing JVU, I don't even know what that means haha
I just don't want to brick the phone and make it completely dead, that's why I'm just making sure I understand the basics before I go ahead with it, sorry if I'm starting to sound annoying lol
You wont brick it if you follow it correctly...
2.3.6 JVU is the basis for all custom roms been flashed unless stated otherwise by Rom Developers.
As its basically a stock 2.3.6 then when you want to flash another Rom its just a matter of Rooting the 2.3.6

Ah, okay.
Well, I'm in the process of downloading your files, THANKS for ALL the help you've given so far, sir!
I'll flash once all the files are downloaded. By the way, does 2.3.6 have Google Play store, and not the old Andropid Market?
I hope I can get this done before I head off to sleep in a few hours, been a very long day haha
I'll let you know of the results, cheers and have a good day sir.
No problem hope it all works out for you :good:
Not sure if Google Play is on it as its 2.3.6 Stock ...just upgrade it if possible

Back again, haha.
I was just wondering, did you say I should root or not? As rooting it seems like a bit of a hassle? Plus, it says that I should install a custom rom zip file if I decide to root it, but I don't have one? I am using your 2.3.6 which was in your Odin Files download link, right?
So if I root, what do I do exactly?

Okay, so I've rooted it also now, and unplugged the USB.
Now it's restarted, and the language set-up page is there, and guess what? .. It froze again :|
Exactly the same way before I flashed it :crying: :crying: lol
I actually feel like crying right now haha, I think the phone may be completely dead? Something is seriously corrupt with it I'm guessing?
I've never dropped it, or accidentally dropped liquid on it or anything like that.
I have absolutely no idea what to do now. Sigh.
Thanks for your help either way though.

Hello,
After coming back from holiday, my phone suddenly stopped recognising my SIM. It see's a SIM so I no longer get an (Insert SIM Message) but I can't do anything with the sim. This is what I see.
Due to this problem I tried resetting my phone to no avail, I then stumbled upon this. I thought that this was fantastic, I could fix it without going to a store or whatever.
On my quest to root my phone for the first time ever I used a guide from the reliable How-To-Geek. I did everything the guide asked me to but unfortunately my adventure came to a halt when 'SuperOneClick' kept freezing when reaching step 7.
I have never rooted my phone so I really don't know where to begin, your help would be greatly, greatly appreciated! :good:
P.S (I have never rooted or ROM'd this phone before?
Here is what you can do
Which model is it ?? International or is it a locked network ??

Hello, do you mean for the SIM? It is the exact same as the screenshot of my settings in the first post. This is because I didn't manage to root it yesterday
The phone is completely fine apart from the SIM problem, that's why I want to root it
The __ONLY__ Current method you should be using to root is the philz kernel method. do not use any other method.
Please go to the philz thread.
PM me if you need more help later.

Thank you very much dude,
I am slightly confused by the terms used. As you can see from my thread, I initially tried using SuperOneClick which seemed simple as it just involved installing apps on my computer and clicking 'Root'.
Currently on my phone, I don't have to backup anything as I just reset it a couple of days ago, it has its stock rom (I believe that's what it is called) Would I have to install a custom ROM or something to root my phone?
Lastly, is this the thread you are talking about?
Thank you very much again dude

Super one click anything is either a lie and bull**** or simply not for this device
Yes that's the correct thread
Make sure to find the right one for YOUR ROM. Read the instructions carefully. No you don't need a custom ROM.
Easiest way to to flash it from stock recovery with the philz file on your external SD card if u have one

In your system settings you will go yo about phone. Match the version there to the Phil version.
I still don't get why you are rooting to fix this...
I am not sure who told you rooting would fix this...
You went on vacation and came back and the sim didn't work
Did you try removing the sim and reseating it in the phone?

Look at the original post. A user had the same problem and his solution was Titanium Backup Pro, he used it to clear user cache or something - this made the SIM work again.
I've taken out the SIM and everything, it works on other phones, just not mine
Lastly, about matching the version on my phone to the one on the thread:
Do I match the baseband version/Kernel Version or build number?

you match the kernel
Really man you MUST read the instructions in the philz thread its very clear.
Well you can try all that, I personally if it were my device would flash philz (safe kernel), boot to recovery, and just do a factory reset and see if it works... but I would only do this AFTER backing up my EFS using Ktool....
ggood luck
but if you want to try clearing cache etc first, no harm done of course
Just a side-note: regarding your links, etc that you post in the OP - I won't read those. I don't think other reputable members here will either. No offense please. I only trust sources on XDA, not random websites. If its not on xda, as far as I'm concerned, it is either incorrect or doesn't exist (i will act blind to it).
The Philz kernel for the Note is easy to find via google. Look either direct for the kernel or look for a PA installation guide and skip the odin option.

There is only one root account on a galaxy note, so it is the one-and-only-best.
If you want to root your device read Dr. Ketan's thread (search for it, good excercise for your brain).
And: best rom xyz posts or threads are against XDA rules.
Just read it: your best Rom thread yesterday was closed. Repeating this won't help...
I had battery issues with my Note GT-N7000. I purchased the original battery from samsung service center. Phone did restarted several times due to low battery. After one such incident it was not accepting my correct pattern. After some time it just stopped getting start up.
Then i tried to enter into recovery mode. It got stucked at android green logo, wheel spinning every single time.
But download mode is still working. I tried to re-flash it with stock firmware as i was running it before this problem occurred (stock with root).
I followed flashing instructions extremely carefully and as they instruct. When i put my phone into download mode, it got successfully recognized by my computer, But while flashing it got stucks at flashing factoryfs.img, ""NAND write start"" and followed by ""complete write operation failed"".
I did changed my original usb cable to another original cable. My antivirus and firewall are turned off permanently. I did tried it on another computer but same result. Downloaded my firmware from sammobile twice. Did tried different Odin versions from 1.83 to 3.07. But no luck at all. I am attaching my screenshots so that you can have a look.
Please help me out in any way you can. Any links or help will be highly appreciated from the bottom of my heart. Thanks in advance for your reply.
Did you have a ROM on it that required you to change the PIT file? If there is a different partition scheme that could cause an issue. Also try unchecking f reset time.

Thanks for your quick response. I do not have a ROM that require me to change PIT information. I was on pure stock with root before this issue came up. I did unchecked reset time but same error came up.
Different partition scheme...? As far as i know, i didnt do anything to my partitions.
You bricked your device. Search for threads with "factoryfs.img" and you'll find answers (repartition, replace MB or follow hg42's thread).
And you'll might find your post from Nov 2012 when you had a problem like this before but "solved" it.

So is there any possibility of restoring the data?
Negative. Custom recovery and frequent backups along with an app like titanium backup would have been good to have before this happened

As per the article and since i cannot enter into recovery mode, i tried all the PIT files provided with stock rom. But nothing has worked. Every time Odin is failing. I am attaching the screenshot of the same. I did tried to flash speedmod kernel but didnt got success message from Odin. Kindly help me.
i have used custom PIT files due to which my binary counter has increased(i dont care as its out of warranty). My phone shows a yellow warning sign on bootup and now it just dont even start the recovery mode and shows that yellow warning sign when i try to enter recovery.
Download mode is still working but i am unable to perform any write operation. NAND operation is failing everytime. When i used PIT files, it says re-partition operation failed. I can only try things mentioned in the above posts only when i can enter recovery.
Will someone be kind enough to help me out on this one as i really need urgent help? Please help me out guys.
I think you didn't read hg42's thread and didn't follow his big bold red warnings.
Brute Force experiments with different pit files made it only more difficult or impossible.
In his thread there is a link to another thread related to the problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26285877&postcount=12
forest describes a manual method to check for errors including a repair option by scanning the device with e2fsck in chapter 4.2.
I remember some users who solved the brick with factorfs.img with this method (at least I remember one where nokiamode gave that hint).
Try this and follow forest`s instructions carefully.

Thanks for replying. I did read that article carefully but all steps and troubleshooting is valid only and only when your phone's recovery mode is working. In my phone, only download mode is working. So all those steps are not applicable to me.
However i went for case B where he has described solution if we are unable to access recovery mode and suggested to use blind method to use custom pit files. I followed him but it didn't worked out for me. None of the pit files worked for me and i just ended up raising my binary counter to 2 now.
I am not receiving any replies from people(Only 2 or 3 kind people like you have replied, i appreciate it). I am not getting support. Its reallly sad just because my phone is little old now.
Even if i didn't find any solution and my phone becomes a brick( i guess it has become by now) it is still fine for me But the most sad thing is no one cares to reply on a community which was built to help each others. I am continuosly searching for solutions now. Lets see how far i can go. Thanks for your time. Do let me know if you come across any thing or i am ready to try any solution/troubleshooting steps.
