i have the same issue. connected to wifi, good signal, etc. its hit or miss some videos absolutely will not start the spinner just goes on forever. and if it does play it almost always gets stopped.
ATT Device (google edition conversion 4.3)
YouTube app version 5.0.21

I had thus issue constantly when I was on WiFi using AT&T u-verse. If I disconnected and used 4g it was fine. Changed DNS and all that to no avail. Bandwidth was fine. Went with another ISP and the issue rarely happens. Plenty of factors involved sometimes though.

youtube freezes

I am having trouble with youtube on my xz. It suddenly starts buffering, but never continues. I have no problem playing 1080p videos from my nas, and I also have no problem using pop up YouTube player. It is not the network, YouTube runs fine on all other android and Symbian devices in the house. (one x, xcover2,808, Mini pro)
Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Yeah, was hoping to avoid that. 3 mails, VPN, remote desktop settings, savegames +++
But I will try when I have the time. Thanks.
Try to delete cache of the youtube app.. Go to application, youtube, delete cache and restart phone. This helped for me.
Tried that now, after 19min the buffer fault came along again. happens from 2 min untill forever. Have to turn off and on HD and it might start. Anying when the phone is in my dock and I am in bed.

maybe network congestion?
Reset did not work, cannot be the network, I have a kick-ass router and 70mbit down. Besides all other phones work flawless on my network. Hope this is an issue that will be corrected either by Sony update or youtube update..
Try to delete the updates. If you go to apps, then all apps, you will see youtube. Just delete cache and everything else. I had the exact issue. And me too have a great internet connection (100mb) just try to delete stuff of the youtune app. A reset won't fix this problem. Hope i helped

Chromecast Notification Icon Disappearing during Playback

Hello everyone
To whom it may concern:
My name is Jé and I am having issues with this Chromecast. I was able to successfully set it up and begin streaming videos successfully via YouTube and Google Play Video( I rented a movie to try it out). I do not recall if this issue occurred on the YouTube video but upon casting a video from my T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 to my T.V it plays just fine, as with YouTube I was able to hit my home screen and send texts, etc and the Cast window still be in my notifications panel.
Well I got a phone call and went to answer it and the Chromecast window disappeared . I tried going into Google Play and even the Chromecast application and got nothing….I even restarted my phone and the movie was still PLAYING!...o and I was OFF Wi-Fi! My device said Wi-Fi was on but my data was coming from 4G LTE!
Again the movie still played with no hiccups or nothing even when I restarted my cellphone and played just fine when I accepted the phone call.
I had to unplug it from the back of my T.V, re connect it, and then go back into it works just fine I scrub to where I was and again after a short while the cast icon disappears but the movie is still playing and the phone drops from Wi-Fi. I even turned Wi-Fi off this time and it still played just fine! This is weird! I put a call into Google but to no avail.
I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue. Why does the icon go away? How was it even working with me being off Wi-Fi ?

Not sure why the icon goes away, it should stay on your Notifications: Ongoing, but if your phone's WiFi is dropping out, that's probably why.
As for why the movie continues to play, this is normal. In normal circumstances* Chromecast does not stream from your phone/tablet's data connection. Instead your phone/tablet "hands off" the request (YouTube link, etc) to Chromecast and Chromecast goes online and retrieves it for playback on its own. Essentially, Chromecast is streaming the content directly from the source, rather than things going to your phone/tablet them to Chromecast. At the same time, your phone/tablet keeps a status/control connection open to the Chromecast so it can show you what's happening (play position, etc) and control it.
Likely the cast icon is disappearing when your phone drops off WiFi, as it loses the status/control connection to Chromecast.
* exceptions to this are apps that stream phone/tablet-stored content like AllCast/AirCast/KoushCast (currently requires root and KyoCast mod) and Chrome browser tab casting (this gets transcoded on-the-fly by the PC then sent to Chromecast)

Thanks for replying
my Wi-Fi does not drop its gotta be something to do with this app because it never drops when I am just connected to it regularly. And the fact that the icon goes away is annoying I missed so many parts of the movie because I had no way of scrubbing back unless I unplugged it from the back of the TV

Maybe I misunderstood, but you said your phone dropped off WiFi... I get that your router/AP isn't dropping the WiFi signal (I hope), otherwise there'd be all sorts of other problems.

Regardless, you shouldn't have to reboot your Chromecast - just re-launch whatever app was playing, then tap the Cast icon to connect again - it should then link up and give you status.
HBO GO seems to remember where you were at even across device reboots - must save it in your profile.
Try this:
Launch YouTube
Find a sufficiently-long video (at least a few minutes)
Tap the Cast icon to start casting it to your Chromecast
Watch the playback indicator - it should be counting...
Check TV - it should be playing
Go back to home screen
Kill YouTube app via task manager (or reboot your phone, if you want)
Check TV - it should still be playing
Launch YouTube app again
Don't choose a video, just tap the Cast icon to connect to your Chromecast
That should get your back to the video that's currently playing and give you a playback indicator that shows that the video never stopped playing

Yes you just might be on to something. But I did go back into Google play movies and clicked the movie and it started playing from my phone ! At a different point from my tv. And I went into the Chrome app and nothing, the cast wasn't even available. I keep my phone on wifi when I'm home. Never lost a signal, however since using this I noticed the wifi toggle was still on, but my device was on 4G. I turn off cast go back on wifi and it stays connected , this is weird lol

Wow, that is weird. The Cast icon should be available. I just launched something in YouTube then ran HBO GO and hit the Cast icon there (which then interrupted the YouTube that was already running on the TV, a little bit of a security/concurrency bump there).
What firmware build is your Chromecast on?

Run the Chromecast app and select your device - it'll tell you the build at the bottom.
Likely you're on 13300, or newer if there is one. I had all kinds of weird WiFi trouble with the first build (12072) - I couldn't even get through setup, but it all got better after I got 13300. Now it occasionally give me "connected by can't reach the Internet" after boot but it reconnects in a couple of minutes.

You're welcome. Hope you get it figured out soon. My Chromecast experience (past the setup troubles I described earlier) has been solid so far. Only hiccup currently is sometimes if I'm casting from YouTube it doesn't smoothly transition from the end of one video to the start of the next and I have to disconnect and reconnect to the Chromecast (switch back to phone/tablet/computer then go back to cast).
I have the same problems, mostly in the netflix app. But also a lot times the icon doesn't even show up in netflix (but also youtube) so I can't start casting. When I connect using the chromecast app, it does find the device.
I am on the latest fw and it is plugged in with the original charger.
The only thing I can think of, next to a faulty chromecast, might be the router, I have put dd-wrt on it so I can watch netflix from outside the us. But I don't have any other problems besides the same problem as the OP.

YouTube just had an application update (on the Android device side) for the oddities with the Cast icon when Bluetooth was connected... I wonder if it's related?

I had no issues until 13300 with the "robustness" update for wifi.
Others have reported this same problem -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2443288
I went through it for about 30 minutes last night, Chromecast coming and going.
Resetting wifi through the Chromecast app on two phones was sometimes making Chromecast appear - for a few minutes.
I reset my router and that's cured it for now.
And my router is 2 days old, I just upgraded from an older model.
So for me, problem didn't start until the 13300 update, is much better with the latest versions of Netflix and YouTube but is independent of phones and routers.
Doesn't happen a lot but it's a real problem.

Funny, those are the same symptoms I had that 13300 cured, guess you can't win em all.
One thing to add since you've changed routers - if you're using the same SSID is best to clear the WiFi configuration for your devices and set it up from scratch (looks like you've already done this on your Chromecast).
Some devices get confused when the BSSID is different from what it was set up with. Essentially your new router has a different MAC address and some devices get weird about it, connecting but dropping or just sitting in a half connected state.

Google just wrote this back to me, I will try this the next time I use the cast option on my device
Hello,
Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure speaking with you about your Chromecast device. With the issues that happened while watching the movie on Google Play, I have a quick question. Do you have battery saving mode on your phone? If so, please disable the battery saving mode.
The Battery Saver feature can be found under Apps > Settings > General Tab > Battery
Good tip on clearing the configuration for the SSID, not everyone knows to do that.
Google is just not getting it.
I have no battery saving anything going on, no task killing, no snake oil.
I've sat, watching the app in question and have watched the icon disappear.
Go to Chromecast right away, it's nowhere to be found.
But if you want to leave it alone, it'll play a two hour movie in that state.
Aside - maybe if I'd ran the previous version longer I'd have seen it there as well.
---------- Post added at 02:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:31 PM ----------
PS - I usually have close to 200 MB free ram, so it's not Android doing any task or service killing either.
I've captured several views of logcat during the problem.
Chromecast says it's timed out looking for it.
Netflix says E/venom media error.
Nothing to see there.

Very strange... Hopefully it's better nowadays, but my old HTC would stop doing stuff if it didn't have 300 MB or more free. *shrug*
Just for 100% certainty, can you check your Settings > WiFi > Advanced > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep setting?

Build 15250 made my chromecast unusable.

So I got a chromecast over the vacations and it was working perfectly. Then yesterday it stopped while I was using it. I tried again to cast anything (youtube and Netflix) and it gives me an error message. I have tried factory reseting it twice, and nothing has changed. I have never rooted it or anything. Does anyone have any ideas?

Can you tell us the error message shown in the application(s)?
Also would help to know your make/model of router.
So of course. I try everything I can think of, then ask here, and the second I post it starts to work again. Thanks for helping me out even if I didn't need it. In case anyone still cares, the error said something like "error sending video to device", and it is an att uverse router.

Hahaha keep an eye on it. If it got a firmware update it might have been something related to UPnP or DHCP as those addresses are cached for a short time by the router. Let us know of it shows up again, otherwise have fun!

If you can tell us the make and model number, or point to the manual maybe we can find some probably settings that need adjustment, if the router isn't already listed on Google's known router issues page.
Otherwise, look for options that mention
IGMP
IPv6
Multicast
QoS
I added my mac address to the exception list as per Google instructions for 2 wire routers, but I am too tired to try anything tonight. I will post soon letting you know if it helped.

Same issue. I'm on 15250 with an actiontec c1000a modem. I can see the chromecast on all my devices but its being very erratic.
All this started with "test a" - I queued 2 videos from my phone, played 1 full 3:30 min video, and the 2nd video made the chromecast hang after 30s or so. It was unresponsive to all other devices and apps.
Did a factory reset, set everything up again. I played several videos under 3 mins, then switched devices, then switched to play music - all worked. Then I went back to "test a" and same problem.
edit : turns out it's always 1 video that does the "killing" as such. Prodigy's stand up (labelled "best quality") on YT. I don't want to link to the video really, but can anyone see if the same issue happens to them?

First try power cycling the router, then Chromecast. If that doesn't help please post model, sounds like something RTSP related maybe.

problem with youtube app buffering constantly

Anyone else having problems with youtube buffering constantly? If I uninstall updates it fixes it, but it's annoying dismissing the update notification all the time. Constant buffering happens on wifi and 4G.
Any ideas?
Dev edition, rooted, xposed, gravity box.
There isn't anything we can do. YouTube's servers just suck. I've tried using different dns servers to no avail.
I don't think it's a server problem. It works fine until I install updates to the YouTube app.

It's been working fine for me, but networks often throttle youtube. youtube will try to keep the video at a bitrate that works, but I've long suspected they won't adjust after initial play starts. We have comcast at home with a 20+mbit connection and sometimes youtube barely plays at 360p. They actually play better if i switch to 4G.
and yeah, youtube is one of the biggest server farms in the world and was designed with scalability and changes in demand in mind. Probably uses enough electricity to power a small country.
I had same problem

Well I had buffering problem only on Verizon 4G not on WiFi. Anyway, I tried uninstalling updates to YouTube and clear cache whatever.
When you have the buffering issue, shut your data off and turn it back on. This is the only thing worked for me. Playback starts instantly now.

I have no buffering problems today. No clue why. All I know is Verizon is slowing down unlimited data users after going over 4.7 GB per month.

Music stuttering when on Wifi

I've had a problem the last few months with my music stuttering when I'm on wifi. This problem does not occur on 4g connection.
The problem is on any wifi network I'm on. It's really annoying. First I thought it was a Spotify problem and reinstalled the app, but that didn't help.
Music played from the player stutters as well when on wifi.
I've tried googling this, but I can't seem to find anyone who has had this problem
Anyone else with this problem? Or know how to fix it?
Have the same problem, but haven't found a solution yet.

Give us details guyz. We are jot gods. Firmware version? Custom or official? Any background apps that sucking your wifi while you are connected? Just saying that if you are connected on wifi your phone is uploading on cloud and that means lower connection for the rest. Its the only thing that comes in my mind. Firmware version EVA-L09C432B393. Official version. I've got nothing that's uploading when I'm on wifi. The only thing that is set to upload the photo app when I've taken new photos, but that is like once a month maybe.

I got B394 and i can tell you that i never faced such issues even with earlier versions. Although im considered lucky because i have 300mbps up-down on my home internet and unlimited up-down speeds, unlimited data and i dont suffer with my streaming.
Try to remove every sync from the settings, like mail , google viber, facebook etc etc. Its most likely the reason why you have lag spikes. Go on Wi-Fi and activate the setting that allows you to see the download-upload speed on the top of your screen. This way you will be able to check in-out data. connect on your wifi and check if there is movement. I can not see where else is the problem. If you have data cap on upload it could be the big reason why you get stuttering on wifi when you are using streaming music. After you desync your phone run your app and check if you are facing the same issue. If that fails most likely your phone is suffering from a hungry memory app.
All of my playlists are offline lists as well. And I don't have the stuttering when I'm offline.
I can't find any option to show up and down speed on the wifi. But our home wifi is really good, and we have no cap on upload speed.
And I find it weird that it affects both music apps. I have songs saved on my phone and these also stutter when on wifi, even though there shouldn't be any reason for it.
Take a look o.n the upper right side what I mean. And just to answer your question yes. It does feed something somewhere when you are connected on wifi. There is no other explanation. Awful but its happening. Did you try the rest i suggested you?

Thanks for the help.
Me and my husband found out what was wrong. There is something wrong with the SD card I had in my phone. Turns out Spotify was saving all of my playlists there and it couldn't handle being connected to wifi I guess.
And the SD card somehow ****ed up my wifi connection speed as well. Did speedtests with it in and out and it was a big difference.
