Hotspot & WiFi Direct should work on $600 phone - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi pals. It's been 3 years I'm buying HTC and have had awesome time with them. I'm THE ONLY ONE in my family and friends with HTC and all others buy Samsung.
WiFi Direct didn't work on my One X and I'm really VERY disappointing to know that it doesn't work on One too. All Samsung phones around me have built-in WIFI DIRECT option when they try to share a pic or a video. We don't have anything in our 'share' menu.
I tried using FAST FILE TRANSFER app on my phone. It works like a charm on any phone and transfer 1gig of data within 5 minutes. BUT it's not for me AGAIN! I ran the app and the error came up saying, "wifi hotspot not working on your device. This is how it is implemented in the OS and don't rate the app bad."
I got outta app and turned hotspot on manually and guess what! NO OTHER MOBILE PHONE is able to connect to my HTC One's wifi hotspot. They find the network and get stuck on getting IP ADDRESS.
Wifi hotspot worked in previous devices. Instead of making other stuff work we now have a not-working-hotspot.
I really am a die hard HTC fan but how will HTC get users when they won't care for this petty issue. All samsung around me NEVER use BT unless they're to deal with me.
Is there any way I can use WiFi Direct and WiFi Hotspot on my One?
WiFi Hotspot, if works, will do the job for me because FAST FILE TRANSFER will solve WiFi Direct issue.

Not sure why you're asking me this question but I'm sure you can do it somehow. You should try searching Google for an answer non the less.
Hope you find what you're looking for.

Already tried this. This app needs to be installed on BOTH devices. Now how can I make other to download the app for me in his phone.
This app > https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floriandraschbacher.fastfiletransfer works if only ONE DEVICE has installed it. This app carshed on my One X. But on my One it says wifi hotspot isn't working in my device.

WiFi hotspot uses default hotspot and that doesn't work. I was able to transfer data with LAN but both devices should've ES EXPLORER right? I already use ES so this is convenient for me as long as I'm at home because we all use ES as a file manager. But the transfer speed is only ~2MBps.
As a work around at home I use SOFTWARE DATA CABLE app and that gives me around 5-7MBps speed. Still it needs to be on both devices.
So any of this isn't practically possible when I'm trying to transfer data to my colleague or friend.

wifi hotspot works on both my one x and one, I tried superbeam, I could send a file from my one to my one x but not from my one x to my one

also think a 600 eur phone should have a working wifi direct. Shame HTC

I'm having a very similar problem. I've used my HTC One to tether its 3G to my laptop several times, but it suddenly stopped working. My MacBook can recognize the network and even connect to it (sort of) but it says "no internet connection". Furthermore, the WiFi direct apps also have stopped working (I'm guessing the issue might be related). I used to use an app called "Flash Transfer". I've tried several different apps from the Play store, none of them work. It just says "Connecting" and the finally gives up and fails.
This is really very frustrating, especially since I got it to work before. I don't know what changed!

See that's the point. Now if I'm sitting in a cafe and need to transfer 200MB video I shot last night at a party I'll be forced to take my laptop out and transfer the video to laptop and then connect friend's phone to laptop.
Samsung users will select 'share' > 'WiFi Direct' > 'Send'
I can't make anyone else install the app in order to make WD work. Infact why should even I install it. It should work out of the box.
Never bought Samsung and never will but this thing is really pissing me off that only I use BT and no on else around me.

Yes! Here it is but how to transfer data through this?
WiFi Direct connects to other device and now what to do next?
It's been around 2,3 months I'm banging my head trying to find a solution. Already gone through ALL options and almost 7-10 apps on play store. None worked.

The hotspot on this phone works just fine. It's something on your phone. Could be a hardware issue, you need to do a factory reset or reflash with your RUU. I have had no problems with my hotspot on my One, or on my One X.

Also, if you're running a stock rom thats from a carrier, they like to mess with the hotspot functionality.

Hotspot stopped working on One X when it came to 4.1.1. I don't have that phone any longer so not an issue. How could this be a HW issue?

Are you using the one built in? I have been using that one successfully. I'm on TMO, but I think this app is just the one that comes with the phone.
You need to state which model phone you have, and what ROM.
Use WiFi Tether free a on the market.

I'm using EasyTether Pro v1.1.5 by Mobile Stream. It works using USB to my Win7 laptop. Also works using Bluetooth to my Asus Infinity Tablet (new feature that came out yesterday). My Sprint USA HTC One is totally stock, unrooted and locked.

I'm having an issue where I cannot stay connected to my WiFi network. Everytime I disconnect, I have to sign back in...it won't auto connect. I've tried multiple roms and kernels with the same result. Any quick fixes that yall know of?

Actually I have a problem with mine dropping WiFi all together. I know it is working because my husband's iPhone stays connected and it still works when mine has dropped. Lost 4 calls today because of that problem. Tried tinkering with the WiFi setting on the One between 2.5 ghz and 5 ghz and auto. Makes no difference. Connection lasts maybe 5 or 10 minutes then it disconnects. If you have a solution let me know.

Have you tried looking to see if your phone is actually saving the password? It is saved in the following location;
/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
Open this file up using a file explorer with root capabilities. Is your network SSID and password in there?

It is saving it because all I do to get it back on
Is turn off WiFi and turn it back in again. Then it works for five minutes or so. And I looked at the link that was provided above and made sure I had WiFi on always power saver off etc. See what it does tonight.

Sorry, my response was directed towards the OP. Should have made that clearer.
Sometimes dropped connections with android phones comes from having your router set to 'auto' for channel selection. If yours is this setting, try changing it to a fixed channel. Use the app Wi-Fi Analyzer to find a clear channel.

Well I contacted HTC, and I did the steps ad posted above and so far no problem. Of course it will probably happen after I post this knock on wood. Didn't have to do what HTC said below since it works now but will definitely do it if the problem persists. I also uninstalled a battery widget because one of the posts said to try that also.
We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with the Wi-Fi connection on your HTC One and can certainly provide some assistance to help resolve the issue.
To start, we will need to check a setting on the device. From the Home screen, access Settings>Wi-Fi>Menu>Advanced. Make sure the DLNA Auto-IP is disabled. Also, I know you have also changed it prior but set the Wi-Fi frequency band to 2.4 GHz. We will need test the combination to see if there is any difference.
If needed, we will need to make sure there is not an issue with the phone trying to get through your network’s security. For this, we will first need to remove the network from the phone. Access Settings>Wi-Fi then tap and hold on the name of the network to select Forget Network. Once done, reboot the phone and temporarily remove the security from the network. It should be open with no password and the SSID being broadcast. This is only temporary so we can test the phone to see if the same thing continues with an unsecured network. Once this is tested, you can add the security back to the network.
We would also recommend testing the phone with other public networks to see if you still having issues with the connection.
Feel free to reply should you have any further questions, Christina. If you feel more comfortable discussing issues by phone, you can contact Technical Support at 1-866-449-8358, 8 am to 1 am ET, 7 days a week.

Having the same issue with the wifi. Connection is erratic even if I am in the same room as the router/superhub. I went to the store today and they tested it there as well. They uninstalled some power saving apps and it seemed to work ok but at home same issues. Loosing connection when surfing and if I leave the room no connection at all.
Will have to get back to the store tomorrow to get it replaced.

Yea man...I remember you...haha. The One is bringing a lot of good people over from what I've been seeing.
As far as using an international ROM, yes I am....was using Trickdroid, but now I'm trying out AndroidRevolution 8.0...same issue. Next time I flash another Rom, I'll try the international setting instead of the ATT setting. Wouldn't I have to change the APN if I did that, or does that setting adjust something else?

Nah I didn't have to change anything. I get average 15-25 meg lte speed. A lot of guys were having the WiFi passwords reset on boot with the att package checked in aroma. From what I've seen the only difference with international & att is the signal icons. I had to switch because WiFi tether wasn't working under att.

[Q] Wi-Fi Direct

Anyone else having problems using this? The one under the Wi-Fi Settings.
I also tried using Super Beam transferring between 2 HTC One's and did not work. Not sure if this is related.
Thanks.
Nope, I did exactly that last week and it worked perfectly
Did you get any error messages or just nothing happened? I couldn't get the NFC part to work but the qr code established a wifi direct connection fine.

Yes that's right.
Forgive me if I'm missing something, but I don't think you can "use" wifi direct by its self. It's just a temporary network between 2 devices to transfer information, so you need some kind of app to send/receive the information (like superbeam). That option under wifi is just to enable it on the phone.

Untraceable Unlimited LTE Tethering

Hello guys,
I just want to share with you guys or at least to the people that Tether mobile data to other devices like tablet, pc, laptop and/or other mobiles there is an app that works like charm. After weeks trying to successfully tether from my data plan I was getting all negative results. I even paid for the premium app Tether from CMW and that didnt worked for me at all until finally find FoxFi app. Works so great that I bought the keys to unlock the free version to premium and is amazing. I get speed on my PC from 13mb to 16mb download and 10-12mb upload.

I was able to get tethering to work on my current rom last weekend. It was the first time I used it, but it worked just fine from the AHD to my Nexus 10. The biggest problem was that it sucked the data like crazy. I suppose I should have turned off background data on the nexus while doing this, but I didn't think it would make a big difference.
What is the benefit of this app if your tethering already works?

I have unlimited lte/4g data with tmo but this plan doesn't include tethering. Is something great for me because they can't trace me sucking their data from my PC something that I have sucked over 20gigs of data from my PC. I can tether from most of the ROMs but only to phone and tablets not PC or laptops.

[Q] Mobile hotspot / Wi-Fi tether problem

I'm having an issue connecting other devices to my hotspot via wireless tether on my HTC One M8. I'm currently on ViperOne 1.3.1 ROM, stock kernel. The devices I try to share my network with (ps3, 360, iPhone, M7) will pair with my phone with no problem but it won't let any device connect to my network. Can someone please help me?
I also have an htc one M7, also ViperOne ROM but have no issues tethering other devices to that device.
have you done this with any other device? as far as i know hotspot is just an internet bridge and doesn't create a lan, basically it treats all devices conected as one... i might be wrong though, but even when i had legal hotspot on my old verizon contract i wouldnt get a lan just Internet
