you can flash twrp and it will replace cwm and vice versa.
i changed from twrp to cwm only by flashing it over, because twrp caues problems (backups were damaged or not recognized - never had such problems with cwm).

Ok thank you for the advise will look for twrp and see which is best for this device

but sir tyson says twrp is better?

They both work fine, but I prefer TWRP for more advanced features.
Did you by any chance rename your backup-folders with spaces in them?
That would explain why they weren't found by recovery.
Sent through time and space from my s3mini/CM10.1

İ think twpr is better when iwas at cwm it doesnt wipe good. İ have to flash orjinal rom after 3 or 4 flashing because of reboots .but after twpr there is no need to flash orginal rom.

i used both modes. I know that spaces are forbidden so i didn´t use them or rename anything.
But the fact is that two times twrp produced a corrupt backup i couldn´t reflash.
Never had such problems with cwm (but the same with cwm touch :crying

NANDROID ? Don't use stock recovery. Don't make nandroid backup for stock rom.
so how should i flash cwm recovery .
and which recovery is best suited for nandroid backups and comptability with all apps.
does it necessarily require me to install custom roms.

I am in same situation with a GT-S5570, it has stock rom and is rooted. I downloaded Clockwork Manager to it's SD card.
Then from stock Recovery manager I tried to install CWM from sd card. The screen got distorted and graphic looked awful.
Had to reboot and nothing got installed.
Tried Odin but it won't recognize my phone while in Downloading mode.
I want to install Cyanogenmod 10.1 Android 4.2........any ideas? I guess I need somekind of backup first, if I mess up and need to reinstall stock? Hard to do with stock recovery mode though.

Apps can always be reinstalled in no time I think, problem is I can't install CWM from stock recovery, when selecting update from sd/zip or whatever it says, I pick the CWM file on my SD-card.
Then the graphic gets messed up and I can no longer see the menu clear.

before you flash cwm make sure its in the root directory of your sdcard... . So to say sd root is to say the topmost folder on the sdcard, which is just on the sd and not in a folder.
without getting odin recognize your Mobile you should not flash anything as if you get in any trouble it would be easy for you to flash the stock rom
and best and safest method to flash cwmr is to flash it through odin
you cannot backup stock rom with cwm recovery only custom one's can be backed up
to backup apps and data you should use titanium backup

[Q] Installing TWRP over CWM

Hey guys, I was wondering if I can just simply install TWRP over CWM using the tool kit provided by mskip or I'll brick my phone if I do that? Thanks and sorry for my poor english lol
I installed twrp provided by maclaw team over cwm simply by flashing twrp zip in cwm (like you would flash new rom, or gapps) and rebooted recovery. Nothing bricked and had no problems.

I read somewhere, that unfortunately no. However, if something goes really wrong, you still can flash cwm back and then restore. (and if you can't then perhaps flash it through odin?)
Oh well, thanks a lot anyway

when twpr install, reboot and then do a back up with twpr, it is clear that CWM will recognize you as you create a folder TWPR.
I'm now with TWPR

Stop giving people bad information... Of course you can if you have the updater script written to write raw image to your recovery partition.

So, does it work like that, that I can simply open cwm backup file in twrp? Or is this script written by something external? Because that's what OP was asking for I guess.
I wrote this because I read it somewhere in development thread of CM 10.2, if it's false, then I'm guilty of spreading misinformation

No you can't restore a cwm backup in twrp. I thought the OP asked if it's ok to flash twrp recovery while in cwm, to change the recovery. That works fine
Hi guys, I read all the threads about replacing the CWM with the TWRP, everyone seems to agree on the fact that you need to flash the zip file TWRP by entering the CWM, however there is no such thing as a zip file, I checked on the download page
https://dl.twrp.me/golden/
and there are either .tar files or .img files.
Can I just flash the .tar TWRP file using ODIN ?
Does it overwrite the existing CWM ?

[Q] TWRP Recovery to CM

Hey guys,
I have s3 mini. I wanted to flash 4.4 Kitkat on my phone. I needed to use TWRP recovery for that. So I removed ClockworkMod & installed TWRP.
Now,the problem is I have my stock rom(4.1.2) backed up using rom manager in ClockworkMod.
I tried installing ClockworkMod recovery using TWRP, but still TWRP recovery appears.
Is there anyway I can get ClockworkMod Back?
Plsss Help me guys!

I think you need to use the same version of cwm that you used to take the backup. Example, if you did a backup with cwm 6.0.2.7 you only can restore it with cwm 6.0.2.7 not work with 6.0.2.8, I think, got it!?!

I did the backup with 6.0.2.7. When I backup it says md5 dispatch. I have another backup saved in my computer. I copied it into the phone but no recogonized by rom manager. Is there any other way?
I meant when i restore it says md5 dispatch.
Or delete the checksum file so it will skip that

hello,
try this:
1. CWM flashes with your back up when you reboot freezes at startup because it finds the data folder or another (can not remember which) I think.
2. Then reboot into recovery again
3. flash back your backup again.

CWM 5xx | CWM 6xx

Hi,
i have some questions in cwm.
Last year i used a cwm 5 to flash some cm7.2. Last month i tried to flash cm11.
Therefor i used cwm6.
After all i want to go back, and tried to restore my backup. But this does not work. - restore aborted
Is this why i use cwm6 and make the backup with cwm5 ?
And can i easily change cwm to restore my cm7.2 backup ?

Yes, it is because you made the backup using CWM 5 so you cannot restore it with CWM 6. Your only solution now is to install the stock rom back using odin through Download Mode and then install root and CWM 5. Once CWM 5 is installed back, you can restore your previous backup. Hope I Helped

Mobile Odin is an AMAZING APP ...but... AFAIK with CWM 6.0.4.7 you can go back to CWM 5.0.2.6 :good: so just flash it
Yes sir it is. And yes if the app will install you can get back to cwm 5 using it. That's how I found it lol. I had problems installing it on an omni build from last month though.

BTW @alex_is_the_1 you don't need Mobile Odin to flash it, just a Terminal Emulator/ ADB
EASY GUIDE TO GO BACK FROM CWM 6.x TO CWM 5.x
1. Extract the image file from [url="dl-1.va.us.xda-developers.com/7/4/3/3/3/3/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace-fix.zip?key=6roq9AjWknQHZSzHyGtAbQ&ts=1402611881]CWM 5.0.2.6 FIXED.zip[/URL] (recovery.img) and put it in your sdcard's root directory.
2. Use the Terminal app (CM11) [optional download and install Terminal Emulator (from Play Store)]
3. Open it and type the following code (running Android 4.4.x)
Code:
su
flash_image recoveryonly /storage/sdcard0/recovery.img
It should work correctly and you'll get CWM 5.0.2.6 Fixed as recovery :good:
Thank you all for these Tips.
After this infoermation I've tried to install psx-recovery-0.3.6-touchscreen
directly via CWM 6 and this works too :highfive:
thanks

But just to be clear: the data restore itself seems to be as quick as twrp, but when it finishes backup (last action displayed) it's "hanging" for a while.

I used twrp on my mortorola Atrix and it was possible to extract backup content on my pc with 7zip (.win files).
So perhaps it's a newer twrp version used here and backup files are criated in a different way ?

new backup method i think,
even if you cant extract with pc it doesnt mean that it doesnt work in recovery

I found a way to manage twrp backup files on PC: with TotalComander and renaming files as .tar
This wasn't necessary with twrp on Motorola Atrix (can be open with 7zip), but the version with Xperia is different.
