I've been poking around the forums a bit and noticed that some work is being done for creating a root method on the at&t Moto x (as well as a sizeable bounty being offered)... my question is, will the Verizon Moto x be rootable by the same method?
It seems that the software would be relatively similar, so I was assuming yes, but I'm not sure...

Yes it will be rootable using this method. If you want, you're free to test since I need a guinea pig anyway
I would like to be a guinea pig but I can't do anything too risky because I really can't afford another phone

There's no risk involved...its not a bootloader unlock, just a root.

We’re happy to announce that the MOTOROLA ATRIX™ HD will be available in a Developer Edition and also be a supported device in the Bootloader Unlock program. It has the same features and specs as the regular MOTOROLA ATRIX HD, but allows the infinite customization possibilities offered by an unlockable bootloader. Unlocking a bootloader isn’t for everyone, but for some, it’s a must-have.
http://www.motorola.com/blog/2012/11/06/announcing-the-motorola-atrix-hd-developer-edition/
Now that's some bull****.
I don't understand why they won't do it like HTC and let anyone opt in to unlocking their bootloader. I doubt there's any real changes. Just certain IMEIs or serial numbers are able to use the unlock.
When Moto shafted the Atrix users and reneged on updating the Atrix I should've stayed away. I don't understand how they sit down in a room and come up with these ideas and think the customer will not mind.
Moto makes good phones, but they are morons

Based on this announcement, can we ever expect an unlocked bootloader for our already purchased atrixes?
If not I might have to ditch the phone, which is really a shame.
It's still there. I tried to comment similarly though and it wouldn't let me.

Yup, we've all been screwed, now we need to find a way to unlock the bootloader without moto's help. also, the only difference between that and the bell edition is that stupid at&t logo at the bottom of it... this is complete crap and such a waste for a phone with so much potential that is now just going to fade away to oblivion.

They are respecting AT&T's wishes. They told everyone beforehand the ATRIX HD would not be unlockable.... expecting otherwise is lunacy.

I dont expect an unlocked bootloader. I just don't like having the option for an unlocked bootloader coming out a month and a half after I got the phone. Also I spoke with moto and asked about the retail version being unlocked and they said "I can not answer that question, as I do not have permission discussing that" so I have never heard motorola say that the Atrix hd will NEVER be unlocked. They may have but I have not heard it. Either way I like this phone, but they should have said MUCH earlier that they plan a dev edition so everyone that wanted the dev edition could wait. Not get stuck with the retail version.

I remember reading that several places. It's a shame the Moto can't do right by their customers and support us, rather than bowing to ATT. I understand they need ATT to carry their phones, but there needs to be an option for us. That is what is suppose to be what is great about android, the unlimited possibilities. A dev edition phone is helpful to those that don't already have the phone. I for one will not sell this phone then spend 250-350 more for the dev edition, I'll buy a sammy phone. I believe that since we are the customers that spend OUR money on their product, we should get more support. I for one will not buy another moto device if I don't see a huge improvement in the way the support their customers.

I bought a used AT&T Moto X and it's on 4.4.2. Is it possible to root this (maybe through downgrading first), or do I need one of the unlocked versions of the phone?

unless an exploit comes out in the future (but i think everybody is pessimistic about this), the locked versions can't downgrade and can't root 4.4.2.
so you need either an unlocked version, or a locked version pre-4.4.2
And no....don't downgrade. You could easily brick your phone.

Ah good idea... selling it new.
Actually I'm not sure I need root. I only rooted my S3 to get rid of touchwiz, but this stock android might be ok. Only app I use that needs root is file manager and drivedroid. And I want to disable the camera shutter sounds
I'd like to put CM11 on there but looks like motox isn't well supported by CM anyway.

No one is really in the market for a moto x unless you sell it for dirt cheap. You don't really need to root this device it's great without but even better with root. You can disable the camera shutter sound from the camera menu. Es file explorer is a great alternative? But if you want return it and get the T-Mobile version its unlocked. This phone has been really great.

Why are all pessimistic that manage to get root on a closed bootloader version from AT & T?
Why do these companies do not sell at least an opportunity to get open bootloader? What do they lose?

I bought my Moto X directly from Motorola (not subsidized from AT&T) for use with AT&T. I did not opt for the slightly costlier DEV model, so is this thread telling me my personal property cannot ever be unlocked to be used somewhere else?

Pretty much...
Don't confuse bootloader unlock with SIM-Unlock though.
You can pay a small fee and get your AT&T X unlocked to use on other GSM carriers....AT&T also might provide you with the code if you meet certain criteria. Bootloader unlock is another story. AT&T forbids Motorola from giving out unlock codes for their branded phones. Currently the ONLY possibility for unlocking the bootloader on an AT&T X is through the China Middleman.
Apologizes if any (or all) of this is redundant.

Thanks, I pretty much figured in this day and age that the SIM could be unlocked or I'd have bought the unlocked one to start with. What bothers me most is I do not use/abuse root on any of the devices I own and am only interested in doing so on my X to run the Titanium Backup app I purchased to run on my older phone. I guess I knew back then the app needed root to run but since that used to never be an issue due to the collective experience I have at my fingertips here at XDA-Developers.com. it never dawned on my that a day would come where root would be taken away from me never to be returned.

Read the thread in Moto X General titled "China Middleman Back?"
This is currently the ONLY way to unlock a NON-DE Verizon Moto X
I suggest doing it ASAP - its impossible to know when the Chinaman will lose access to the database.

If only there were a Q&A section for topics like this...
Also, get the DE edition, otherwise you're taking a chance on if you'll be able to get a valid unlock code.
Sent from my Moto X
@ry_t keep in mind that the bootloader unlock code is unique to each phone. So if you need to replace your phone for any reason, you'll have to get another unlock code.
If you do not have the Developer Edition X for Verizon, you can try buying the code from the Chinese Website/MiddleMan. But again, you'd need to buy another code if you need your phone replaced (like warranty).
This likely does void your warranty too.
If you get the Dev Edition, the code is free from moto's web site, and it doesn't void your warranty.
And as imnuts alluded too, this should be in the Q&A section, rather than Dev section.
I understand that you can root the unlocked version because you have to unlock the bootloader. Anyone have a root method for the VZW moto X? Even a safestap method? Thanks.
I was looking for info on this too. I tried searching around for a irc channel for development, but haven't found it yet. If it exists, might be too early yet.
I'm crossing my fingers someone finds a way to root it.
Trust me, if there was one, you'd know it. The thread would be stickied and 1000 posts deep.

We can only hope at this point.. or maybe we will see a bounty thread pop up
I'd be willing to donate to a bounty for obtaining root on Verizon - if someone sets it up. (have no clue how to do it)
Me too, I'd donate $50 to the effort, if someone at it up.
I'd donate for a bounty, as well.
Just stating my support.

Yeah, well the 2014 models came with 444 out of the box. I'm currently running ART, and am too lazy to switch back to dalvik just to try Sunshine, but from what you and the devs there are saying, it sounds like it wouldn't matter anyway.
I tried Sunshine on mine and it didn't work.
Sunshine does not work ATM, it is a work in progress. 4.4.4 is an issue, however with 5.0 on the way new exploits are always possible...

Hate to be pessimistic, but don't be so sure. Took a year to find the first exploit when Sunshine devs were actively looking. Best bet is to sell it on Swappa and buy another that does not have the "49" OTA trojan horse Verizon update.

Right. Verizon could easily allow Motorola to unlock the bootloaders. Verizon is the one who demands Motorola lock it down and keep it locked down.
The identical Quark to the Droid Turbo, the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250, same FCC ID, same Verizon bands, etc. runs just fine on Verizon with an activated Verizon SIM card and has an easily unlockable bootloader via the Motorola website. It's sort of the "dev" version of the Droid Turbo XT1254, but only comes in 32GB. No 64GB available.
But it's identical in every way. People have even flashed Droid Turbo stock ROM over it.
Point is, Verizon is to blame. They want to own and control your phone, no matter what.
