Should i root my HTC One ? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I rooted my Sony Xperia Neo because he needed it, better speed, higher clock speed, everything better.
Then i bought HTC One X. After 6 months i rooted that to. Much better battery, more speed, smoother, better roms over all.
I am between rock and a hard place with the HTC One. Should i root it? What are the benefits? It's fun i know, but will the battery last so much longer? It has speed. It's smooth.
Please help make this decision easier :silly:
Thanks

I honestly don't think there's any real need to root it unless either you find bad performance in some areas or you want access to root apps.
Much like you, I've rooted previous devices because they needed that extra boost so I'd flash certain ROMs and/or kernels to solve those problems.
I didn't root my One for about a month because I wanted to see how it performed and it needed no boost whatsoever. I did end up rooting it though purely so I've got access to root apps which I'd previously used and got so used to them.
So my advice would be to leave it unrooted for now so you have time to really test the phone out and then see if you feel it needs any improvements at all
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

if youre satisfied with your phone as it is, i wouldnt root it just yet. unless youre bored or something and just want to mess around. or wait until you have a need to root it and then just do it.

I would agree with what has been said above by my fellow XDA'ers. I haven't rooted my One and it's going on 2 weeks now since i bought it. I honestly don't feel like i need any more CPU/GPU performance out of the device. I managed to get an AnTuTu score of 26511 on a completely untouched stock setup. All the apps and games that i've tested - and i've bought a handful of the most graphically demanding ones, like GTA Vice City, Modern Combat 4, etc - have showed no slowdowns or lags whatsoever. It's like having a Snapdragon 800 device at the moment - there are no apps/games right now that actually require its power. All that you can find on the Google Play store runs perfectly on a Snapdragon 600-powered device. Maybe by the end of this year or early 2014, if newer apps/games prove a bit laggy on the stock ROM, then i would consider rooting. By the way, i would highly recommend ARHD ROM from all the feedback that i've read. I downloaded his ROM already, but haven't made up my mind when to install it.

Battery life
Is the battery life better on the rooted htc one?
That's the biggest concern i have because im not too impressed with the battery performance on the stock phone.
I'm thinking about putting the latest cyanogenmod version on my one but not sure if i want to go through with it. I've had mine for couple days now.

[Q] Time to upgrade........

OK, its time to upgrade my trusty DHD.....
...but what gets my hard-earned (no, really) pennies?
To me there are 4 options........
1) HTC One X
2) Samsung Galaxy Note
3) Wait until the 30th and get the Samsung Galaxy SIII
4) Keep the DHD for another 12 months and benefit from a cheaper contract.
So, if it was your pennies getting spent, where would they be going?
I'm looking for views from existing SGN users here. Do you love the Note? Hate it? What do you like most about it, and what drives you potty?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

I love my note. It's definitely my favorite phone out of the 8 smartphones I've owned (iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, HTC Sensation, Samsung Vibrant, LG G2X). The downside? It is the most disappointing phone development wise. There doesn't seem to be any good ROM out there. Stock is painfully slow. There is no CM7 which is really disappointing. Any of the ICS I've seen out has had major problems which is why I haven't upgraded yet. There are horror stories about people bring their phones when upgrading to ICS and so far it doesn't seem to be a small number of people which is really sad. Samsung is JUST rolling out ICS now but I've heard stock ICS is also very slow and if you have CWM on or from what I understand have rooted your phone at all, you run a huge risk of bricking if you try put ICS on.
TL DR; If you don't mind staying stock for a WHILE, get the Note because it's awesome having a huge screen, resolution, and the SPen.

Exactly my thoughts! Thanks for saving me the trouble of typing. I am lazy as hell.
I flashed tons of ROMs and back to stock. At least I won't be bricking my phone this way.

To the OP: If I were you, I would get the One X or the S3, depending on the needs. Like I need the sd card and removable battery so it would rather be the S3 for me. Assuming you haven't used the note for long, both these phones must feel great to you. For almost all of us here, they are just too darn small. Once you use a note, you just get addicted to it.

Thanks guys. Keep them coming.
I played with the Note and the HOX today and liked them both, but the huge Note battery is drawing me towards it.
I'm 6'1" and have hands like pan-shovels so the size of the Note isnt a -ve to me.
love mine too!
Yeah loving the bigger screen. I'd never go back to something smaller.
On a different note.. (haha) had mine a month and have rooted and switched the rom and Kernel.. wasn't very hard just had to get over the mind set of bricking it.
Buy one!
Note, large screen, s-pen apps (if you're inclined to use them), some good roms, ICS development with the new builds should be on their way soon
the rest? S3, rather than 1x. or at least wait till reviews come out comparing the 2.
wait
wait for Galaxy S3 - I allready have it and It's awsome!!!

The Note is fabulous - better than the GNex I came from. Why? The screen principally - the Galaxy nexus screen just seemed so small compared!
I think the answer is this:
1. If you want the latest tech - go for the One X or the S3.
2. However, as it's so early in their life cycle you don't know what problems they will have (other than we already know the OneX has cr*p battery life) and we all know that no phone is perfect. Each phone I've had (and I've had a few) has had it's own unique issue.
3. If screen size is important, forget the other two and go for the Note. There is just simply no question of that (until Note II is announced in future!)
Maybe quad core will be a bit faster than dual core but I doubt it will make much of a difference in everyday use. In any event, I hate TW / Sense etc so always remove that bloatware and, hey presto, android flies on the Note (not that it was sluggish with TW).
And the lack of reliable ICS at the moment? In the words of Catherine Tate (look her up if you're not British!) - am I bovvered? There's such a clamour for it and, yes, it's a bit prettier and more logical in places but GB is absolutely fine for 99.98%.
Just my £0.02. Good luck with the decision.
Edit: Just seen that you're a brit - no need to look up Catherine Tate! More importantly, just realised you've got a DHD. Move on, you won't be disappointed. Sure, tech will move on over the next few monts, years etc but it always does.

Thanks for that. I agree with your assessment, especially ICS which is definitely leaving me underwhelmed in terms of how "un-different" (new word!) it is to GB, especially after having used Honeycomb on my tablet for the past 6 months.
I've decided (with a feeling of I'm cheating on a loved one) to get a Note online, then I can return it under distance selling laws if I find it unbearable to live with. I suspect it wont be going back.
Genuinely, many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Your insight has been much appreciated.

I love the large screen and battery of the Note.
The S3 is more future proof, but only because of the processors. RAM is the same.
One thing in the s3's favor is the LED notification light! w00t! I have been missing this on EVERY device that wasn't a blackberry!
The s3 also has a large battery, but .. the Note takes the cake.
The One X is out of the picture. Why? Removable battery. Also, they pushed the device so fast to get it out on the market as one of the first quadcore devices that ... well, to me it doesn't seem that attractive. The s3 on the other hand looks mighty fine!
The Note is awesome for its screen and battery size (as well as the S-Pen).
It's really your call... Sometimes I wish my note were a tiny bit smaller, but I don't regret it when I'm actually using it! hehe.
I upgraded from DHD to galaxy note and can say it was the upgrade. Absolutely amazing display over DHD, much better battery life, faster, smoother, much better camera, etc. When I look back now to already my wife's DHD, it seems to be a nice small phone ... Was able to replace most of work on my laptop with note thanks to Swype ...
I have both on stock ROM, didn't find need to go for ICS on my note. Everything is working flawlessly, maybe will change my mind half year later when there will be more positive reaction from community ... my few cents .

One thing that's driving me mad is the sluggishness of the stock Gingerbread ROM. Is the official ICS ROM still sluggish?
If so, would rooting the phone and deleting some of the bloat help? Also, is it possible to remove Touchwiz from the official ROM? I'm a bit scared to try any other ROMs in case I brick my phone.
I've had my note since november and I love it!! The huge screen is so much fun and great to surf the web!!! It doesn't feel bigger in my pocket than my previous phone (iPhone). Even though it has a huge screen the battery life is really good (especially with my actual rom Criskelo)
I haven't tried the other phones you posted but I am still trying to understand why anyone would need a quadcore in his phone today!! I installed spy cpu on my SGN and my CPU almost never rises to 1400MHz so what could anyone do with the extra power maybe 3D games since I don't play any so can't tell about the performances but I doubt it since the note still has one of the best processors out there! The games I play are: solitaire, temple run, fruit ninja,...

I don't really notice the sluggishness, everything seems smooth!! The rom I am using is lighter than the stock rom so there may be a difference! If you wan't to remove Touchwiz you'd better install a new rom on your phone would be easier than to modify the stock rom! In either case you need to root your phone! At first didn't want to do it but in the end I am happy and giving some good feedback about the rom I am using! And the bricking is pretty rare!!
To install a new rom if you literally follow instructions you can't run into problems!! A bit of research and in the end it just takes 10/15min to change rom!

That's an easy one. Root and install one of the stock rooted GB Roms. No need to 'remove' TW. Just install another launcher (let's not start the 'which launcher is best' argument here) and then set that as default. TW will fade into the background and won't be used and your Note will be faster.

[Q] Should I buy this phone?

Well I already ordered it on amazon so yeah I will have this phone in less than a week. My xperia play decided to give up on me, and I needed a good cheap phone fast because I can't live without android.
So... what I would like to know if the HTC Vivid is a upgrade or a downgrade compared to the xperia play. When I look at the specs it for certain is a upgrade with the 1GM ram (Xperia play has 512mb) and the camera experience. But I want to know from you guys how the performance is. I had a lot of problems with the Xperia and I'm hoping they won't appear on the vivid.
Some of the problems I had on the Xperia play were:
- Constant Lag
- Touchscreen not always responsive
- Keyboard not always responsive
- Multitasking is pretty average
- Lag on 2D HQ games like Temple Run and Ninja Fruit
So will I be facing similar problems with the Vivid? I would like to think not since it has ICS and 1GB ram. Things that are the most important for me with this phone:
1. Social Multitasking (Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram)
2. Camera (Skype)
3. Casual Gaming without lag (Temple run, Angry Birds, Ninja Fruit ect)
I've seen reviews on youtube and they look very positive but I do see people complaining about the battery life. That's not really a issue for me since I walk with my charger 24/7.
So what do you guys think? Will I enjoy this phone? Or will it be another xperia play disaster for me?
How much did you pay for this phone? Also the stock ics rom on this phone is very buggy. After a few months, I was experiencing lots of freezes and soft reboots. Also reboots take like 5-10 minutes. If you decide to stick with this phone, I highly suggest you install a custom rom on it as they are much more stable than the stock ics rom and dont have the freezes and long reboot issues (albinoman887's are the best IMO).

$215 on amazon. It's an unlocked AT&T Vidid version. And yeah I will most likely install a custom rom, but for the first month I hope the stock rom is good enough. I tend to observe my android first before starting messing around with it.
Is there lag during gameplay? And was it as buggy on gingerbread?

Hmm it could be possible that I will get it with ICS as well, but we'll see. This is my first HTC phone so I'm kinda excited. Can you play heavy games on this phone as well? Like Nova, Dungeon Defenders and the other current games?
Gaming & Multitasking... These are the two most important things for me. That's why I bought the xperia play since it was labeled as a gaming phone and Ironic enough the gaming is average. It's only good for emulators and such.
Since you have some sense of my tastes in phones, do you think this phone will satisfy me?

Multitasking...not so much, gaming, it's adequate, keep in mind you only have 1Gb of ram and the OS takes up roughly 1/2-2/3rds of it.
Storage is not a problem though with 8Gb internal and it'll handle 32Gb SD card with no issues. It does a good job as a camera and media device.
If you have the time and notion, I would suggest reading up on how to S-OFF(optional but makes life easier), installing custom recovery, and installing a custom ROM (Albinoman887's AOSP 4.2.2 is nice and relatively stable). Just be sure to read the thread regarding some issues with 4.2.2 on the Vivid (minor and more of an annoyance).
Enjoy!

With a contract (standard upgrade option) I paid... $0.01 for my Vivid, brand new. July of last year, I found it on Amazon.
I'm running DU on it now with great results. Volumes are good, battery life variable (helps a lot if I put it on airplane mode when I am at work where there is no signal to speak of).

[Q] Should I get this phone as an upgrade?

Sorry if threads like this are not allowed or if I'm posting in the wrong section...
I need some opinions here. I am coming from a Galaxy Wonder and I would like an upgrade. Have currently earmarked this device on top of my wishlist. I would like to know if this phone's tech is able to last around 2-3 years.
I'm particularly concerned about the 1 GB RAM this phone has. Is 1 GB enough?
Thanks in advance guys.

1GB is more than enough in most phones, I've never had RAM management problems with this one.
However, my answer is a big NO.
Let me elaborate;
>Battery life
With proper greenifying, wakelock detecting, and no more than 2% per 12h of battery discharge, it has a decent battery life, but it seems the screen and the tegra 3 chip draw a lot of power from it. An extended battery does fix that though, but don't expect more than 3h of screentime on a normal usage day and 60-70% brightness, on a normal battery.
>Stock ROM
Looks great, feels great, kernel is easily updated (if you got the bootloader unlocked, flash another one), and then works great too. This phone, in my opinion is meant to be the LG Optimus G's younger brother. I've tried a lot of custom roms, but stock is the one that takes it away from me, after properly kdz flashed (without the bloat apps and stuff).
>Heating issues
10 mins of playing, well, pretty much anything that's 3D makes the phone really hot, no thermal throttling though, but don't expect this phone to last if you play an hour of gaming or more. Even Subway Surf kills the battery.
>Tegra 3 incompatibility/unoptimized apps
Most games are made with Adreno in mind, needless to say, Adreno is not better than the T3, just has more optimizations done for it. Also some apps aren't available via the Play Store on this phone, but that can vary depending on your region.
In my opinion, I'd always go with an SGS3, even with stock touch wiz and bloat, because
a) it gets proper software updates, unlike LG and all of their devices, not just the 4X HD.
b) better modding support/community
c) apparently heats up a lot less and lasts a lot more, that also means given its support there's bound to be more extended batteries, cases, stands, cradles, docks, and equipment for it.
The only thing the 4X HD has going for it is the price, I've paid 180e for it, and it was a huge step up from an even worse phone than yours (Samsung Galaxy Mini, s5570), but so far, I'm not a happy camper.
And the screen has a dead pixel on it, which irks me a lot.
Oh and apparently someone took the KDZ repository on that one site down. Dunno what the deal with that is too.

i would buy it, since it has good specs, and with custom roms you will have support for quite some time in future, i hope
1 GB of ram for me is enough, i don't play games on it, and after greenify hibernates apps, i got around 400 - 450 mb free, rom is latest vanir rom 4.3.1. dated 26.10.2013., and i am also using killjoy script
phone works really good, only little problem is with baseband_xmm_power wakelock, but devs are working on that and slow but surely this problem is getting reduced
camera is good for taking pictures, at least for me
i would only like that lock key is on the right side, current position is little awkward, but you get used to it
that's it from me
Thanks for the replies guys.
Hmm.... really now debating which to get 4X HD or S3 really a tough decision. I would want the 4X HD as I'm just a little bored of Samsung, but the S3 looks like will get better dev support. Its hard.
More replies please.

Would love to have one, but they're pretty expensive for me.
After some 'extensive' research, I have finally found the Xperia ZR. Maybe I might get it once the price drops (next year perhaps). Had earlier found the Optimus G to my liking, but I just dislike the glass back and front . Well, both have CM support which is a good thing for me

Do not buy this phone. I repeat DO NOT!
Battery life sucks, and it gets hot. It is a fricking smart frying pan. Seriously you can cook an egg on it. And it lags oh boy it lags like hell.
A good phone shouldn't need this much optimization to work better. I tried every CM, kernel etc but either you get good battery life and ****ty gaming performance or you get good performance and horrible battery life (like 2-3 hours max).
Get Optimus G or S3 but don't get this.

If you can get it for a good price and are willing to root and customize it, it's probably the best bang for a buck you can get at the moment.
The IPS screen is simply gorgeous. It's even more pleasing to the eye than my HTC One LCD screen if you ask me my honest opinion. Yes, it tends to drain the battery heavily, but with the right configuration you can get over 3 and even 4 hours of screen time easily. Oh, and I can't seem to get any scratches on it. Impressive since I don't use a case or any kind of screen protection and carry it around in my pocket all day. Only downside: fingerprints!
I like it's design and build quality. Even though it's all plastic, it neither feels nor looks (too) cheap. More important: all the buttons are in the right place for me. The ridged back provides some extra grip and looks quite OK (from a distance ) and so does the fake metal finish on the sides. It has to be the best fake metal in the business because it's still intact after dropping on my bathroom floor twice.
My biggest issue with this phone (besides being ignored by LG) has to be the sound quality. The silly speaker on the back is nearly useless when the phone is laying down. Picking it up doesn't improve anything.
I can't really comment on this phone's gaming capabilities. I don't really use my phone for that, sorry.
The only alternative I would consider in your position would be the Nexus 4. You should be able to pick it up for a fair price once Google releases the Nexus 5.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Hmm.... really now debating which to get 4X HD or S3 really a tough decision. I would want the 4X HD as I'm just a little bored of Samsung, but the S3 looks like will get better dev support. Its hard.
More replies please.

The main reason I went for this device was due to price. If price wouldn't matter, then the Galaxy S3 is a better device IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my device, but since I am using custom ROM's to have JB 4.2.2 there are some things you need to accept if you use custom ROM's (LG has not had the decency to release a JB 4.2.2 ROM
1- Camera: 3rd party cameras using flash and auto focus have issues on custom ROM's not based on stock.
2- BT can be temperamental if you are on custom ROM's
3- The f****** wakelocks that just came out of nowhere on my device are driving me nuts and killing my battery
4- Gaming is a mixed bag depending on the game.
5- External storage can be problematic if for example you are on a custom ROM and try to sync 2000+ songs (17GB's) with Media Monkey.
6- Audio: This really pisses me off... I listen A LOT to music on my devices, and I use different types of good headphones like AKG 450's or some Senheissers PX-200's and the audio chipset on this thing is pathetic, read the review about it on PhonesArena. Even more frustrating is the fact that with the AKG 450's, every time I connect the headphones, the line gets a permanent noise that was not there before. I tested the headphones extensively to make sure they were no broken, and they are fine on all other type of devices except my P880.
On a positive side, it is smooth on most of the ROM's I tried, I like how it looks, it's quite sturdy, GPS works like a charm (after a few tweaks of course); the speaker is ok, the camera when it works is ok; the community is good; the specs are good; All the good ROM's and stuff is relatively recent since it took a while for the bootloader to unlocked and not that many devs were on board. It looks way better than the SGS3 which BTW also have a TON of issues, which is why I went for the P880. Overall, the issues I listed will be sorted by the great devs that have this device, but LG is not doing itself any favours by not releasing updates more often.
So, yes, I do love it, but I will definitely update in less than 2 years to another device. No more LG for me, thank you very much until they learn to support their devices or I would just get a Nexus device.

lol this is disaster mine is just fine. the real disadvantage of this phone is only the low bitrate and framerate of the camera , but thats just how the lg made it. we cant change the hardware. besides that my phone works fine
So you are saying that:
- 3rd party cameras with autofocus and flash are working fine using a custom ROM as in CM based ROM? Which one please? so I can try it.
- No wakelocks at all? What kernel are you using and how do you use your phone? Gaming?, Internet (WIFI/3G) on all the time? FB/Tweeter/G+ on with auto updates all the time?
- Connecting to a car's BT to stream music works ALL the time?
- You can syncronize more than 10GB's in one go to the external microSD with no issues ALL the time?
You must be using either a stock ROM or one based on a stock ROM.
I also am thinking about buying this phone...
I own a Desire HD and i think that it would be a huge upgrade anyways.
The battery is not a problem i think:
1)U can root and install custom roms and it would be better as almost every phone
2)It's removable so you can always get a extended one
What i would like to ask you and have your opinion guys is it would be a bit wiser to get the L9 II instead of this one

Stock or custom?

Up top, this isn't a "best ROM" or "what should I run" sort of thread. It's also a topic that can easily provoke rage so please don't think that I'm trying to convince anyone of one thing or another. This is just me being curious.
After starting with Android a few years ago, I've noticed an increasing amount of "flashing fatigue" setting in lately. Sure, I'll root (because I have a lot of utility apps that require root), but the appeal of custom ROMs is fading fast. The Google Edition port was my latest (and longest standing) ROM for my One, and before that I'd tried one or two stock-derivative ROMs (save one bad AOSP experience back when we had sleep of death going on). I'm back to stock now, and trying a "fuller" experience (no launcher replacement, etc.-- minus root, again, for some XPosed tweaks like disabling the NFC icon).
This phone's now been out a while, so I'm curious: how many of you have "settled down" so to speak on one side or the other?
The first Android I owned was an Epic 4G and then Epic 4G Touch. Both left a ton to be deaired from a software standpoint and I easily flashed 3 dozen or more different roms between those two phones.
Flash forward to the HTC One and I've never felt the need to leave the stock ROM. I do use the Google Experience Launcher and have replaces some of the stock apps with better versions from 3rd party devs, but honestly I don't really see a point. Performance, battery life and functionality all seem to have hit a perfect balance with this phone. And like you suggested, the fatigue of flashing is really heavy these days especially since I'm not looking to fix a flaw or add a feature. Although once a working KitKat ROM hits us I will probably root and flash just to get a feel. Though admittedly I've always found the bone stock look of Android to be lacking visually.

The very first phone I flashed over to a custom firmware was the LG G2X from T-Mobile. The android experience on that phone was very tasteless and bloated. Support from LG was less than non-existent. I found that I couldn't really stand using the phone on stock so I flashed a few different roms until I landed on eaglesblood. Although there was a lot broken on eaglesblood, I found it an upgrade to stock. Fast forward like Adam described and I have been on the HTC One for nearly 6 months. In that time I have flashed perhaps a few custom roms. In the end, I reverted back to stock. The One is a solid phone from both a software and hardware stand-point. I find myself checking my BlinkFeed a few times an hour and if I am on a senseless ROM I feel lost without it.
Tl;dr I have no need to ever leave stock. Stock rooted is good enough for me.

I've been running RageOne and have found it to be more than enough from what I need for my HTC one
Same here. I started with Hero, then Evo Shift, Evo 3D, Evo 4G LTE and now The One. I previously always rooted and flashed multiple roms until found one that like and stable enough for daily use. With the One, I honestly haven't done nothing to it. I find it prefect for everyday use. No problem was so ever. At times I feel weird because I never had an HTC or android phone for less than a week without rooting it and etc, but with the One no need since good as is.
I know also pending amount of developers we have currently since most leave to develop in other phones or carrier based phone model is what we can choose from roms available which is less than the other carrier model.

The HTC One is my first non Nexus smartphone, so dealing with all the bloat that comes with Sense and stock has been hard for me. When I was using my Nexus S 4G I used Slim Rom and loved it for its minimal nature and stuck with it. Slim bean 4.3 stable has been a great rom for me, though now that the 4.4 builds are out I've found them more suitable for a daily driver. Slimkat is awesome and I personally cant wait for it to reach stable. Minimal is my cup of tea, add in Google Experience Launcher and I'm one happy guy.
I had a Hero, then a whole bunch of Shift4G's. Rooted all of those because I could make them noticeably faster, increase the battery life, and get rid of apps I didn't use.
With the One, it's already fast enough that I wouldn't notice an increase much. The battery life is great for the way I use it, I recently had a stretch that was nearly 40 hours off the charger (obviously I didn't use it a heck of a lot during that time). And being able to hide the apps I don't want from the app drawer means I forget they're even there. Because of that, I haven't seen a good reason to put a different ROM on this phone...yet

Is flashing worth it still?

I started flashing when I was 21, my first Android phone (and first phone I rooted), was an Optimist V. That phone was just okay, until I read about rooting and over clocking. I studied for hours of the proper ways to root and what were the best ROMs, and instantly fell in love. It was like a brand new next gen phone! That phone ran so smooth, and had some of the best developers I had ever seen to this date.
Fast forward 5 years, and I have had all the Nexuses (not 5x or 6p) since the V. I used to be a flashaholic; loved over clocking, and debloated ROMs. Since the 6, I've flashed a couple ROMs, but I've gone from 2-3 a month to 2-3 the past year. One thing I've noticed is, they aren't that different. I'm not a features guy, I like simple, and that's what 6.0 brought to the table. I don't really see any huge benefits anymore. Flashing new and updated ROMs has started to become a chore. The phone runs great no matter what I'm using, and the truth, stock runs better than most custom ROMs now.
So to conclude, is flashing even worth it anymore? Sure I can run a ROM and have a huge benchmark score, but that ROM will crash on certain apps more often, and doesn't actually run the basic apps I use any smoother. Stock is so fast now, that it is basically why I won't upgrade to 6p, since I don't use the camera at all.
What do you think? Am I alone on this thought process, or am I just getting old and boring?

I'm 44 as of last month, have been with android since day one in 2008, and have owned all the nexus devices up to the n6, yet I still flash. how else am I going to get a kernel to load? custom ROMs I don't flash much, I find what I like then stay with it. but that's all your choice, you don't ever have to flash anything, again its YOUR choice.
Depends on what your intended outcome is. If you want stable stock, Samsung runs android which you can still customize without the need to root, etc.....Android is still much more customization than Apple without having to do the jailbreak etc. I prefer the ability to theme, customize, and have a kernel I choose.
For me personally, there are "never" too many features in a ROM. I like ROMs that have so many features they are coming out of your ears, but I'm very particular about how I have things set up.....for someone else who may just need the basics then I can certainly see that being the case.

Well, as a senior developer (and I'm about one year senior to simms22 ), I can tell you that I'm not interested in flashing again. I've switched from TW to cm, Temasek and some variants on my Note 3, and finally bought a N6 instead of the Note 4, just because of the possibility of development.
So now I have a hobby, I've got my own Android (yay me!), and after merging in the latest security patch I flash the system.img once a month.
If I find something to modify or develop, well then I flash it a lot, but I haven't done anything big since the beginning of January when I've restored the good old CRT effect on shutting off the screen. And about three weeks ago I adapted CMFileManager to work with AOSP based roms, as a root explorer. But that's that so far.
I used to flash a lot when i had the LG G2 but since owning the N6 i tried a few roms but now on the same rom since a few months. Only do a clean flash once a month to install the latest version of it. btw, 44 years old was some time ago for me

I gave up on convincing my body that its still young. I found out I'm diabetic just a few years ago, and now my body feels as though I'm in my 60s! but, most importantly, my mind believes that I'm 25. so, I keep on living my "25" year old life, regardless of what my body is telling me

Even though my body thinks its about 125 I try to be as active as i can. My mind is still in its early twenties. And as far as flashing roms goes, well i find that a lot of them are very similar, so not much sense in changing a lot.

Honestly... Roms have never been THAT different. On my last few phones (thunderbolt, S4, moto x, Nexus 6), I have just found a rom that had the features I wanted, was stable and offered updates and stuck with it.
The whole flashing multiple different roms a month doesn't have much point other then people looking to do something with their phone... and it never really has.
You don't want any extra features, so if you had an early nexus you probably wouldn't need to flash either.
But still, if you want to choose what quick tiles you have, if you want to customize what you have in your status bar, if you want additional lock screen options, if....
The easiest way is to flash a rom.
1. You are all spring chickens. I was born before WWII.
2. Flashing roms has gone downhill for me since the ultimate excitement of JellyBean and JBSourcery! But still worth it.
I am finding that with AOSP roms many of my apps FC while they work perfectly with stock based ROMs. That's what I liked about Cataclysm. Now it looks like that is dwindling away. Future is looking bleak if I want to use Android Pay so I pass on that. Looks like stock, rooted with maybe Gravity Box is at the end of the tunnel.

well, gravity box is a no go for me. but, android pay means nothing to me as well. for me its aosp all the way, with root. everything else i need i can do myself with root access and access to the filesystem. anyways, i was going to thank you because of your age, but im outta thanks
I always used the stock based roms and for me they work. I dont use android pay..it isnt even available in The Netherlands, i dont use gravity box. I am now on stock lite rom from Danvdh and it works great for me, no bugs, good battery life and no things in it that i dont use.
Not unless you want to get arrested! Nyuk nyuk nyuk....
Yes! use a custom rom...
But as you see here ppl are different...here is my view and person I am.
You buy a Mustang GT, BMW M3, Dodge Charger SRT, etc... you can leave it as is which is fine. Then there are those guys who will take the best of the best and push a bit more...when the N6 was released this flagship phone was the best of its time.
Again....a WHOLE lot of people will be fine as is but a custom rom (the RIGHT rom) is going to give you that edge the stock N6 is not going to give you...those abilities to do more for the enthusiast! I run Pure Nexus by Beans and the tweaks in the rom are clean and give the N6 added power and edge over the standard N6. If you don't care about the power just to move titles, clock, change button actions, on and on it's all there in the RIGHT rom.
So you have to pick type person you are...as for me my Dodge Charger SRT has the power modifications, the system\cpu flashed, under carriage mods, suspension and engine modifications to give we way more that normal SRT...so the same with the N6 if you are that person.
But again it's a choice and my N6 benchmarks proves the difference since I am a power user...no games, etc just a high-end busy, traveling 43 old corp engineer that ask a lot out of my phone.

Most "custom roms" are either CM or some-fork-of-CM. That means, generally, adding more problems than you solve.
I agree that AOSP and factory are pretty solid. My use of custom builds was mainly related to the screwball trash factory images and lack of updates that you get with the various non-Nexus phones. With a Nexus, you get a solid experience and frequent updates to the newest Android, which means less need for complete system replacements.
Yet there are a few, relatively small, changes that are useful. Root, and a couple of home-brew adjustments, that really put a power user polish on it.

But again it's a choice and my N6 benchmarks proves the difference since I am a power user...no games, etc just a high-end busy, traveling 43 old corp engineer that ask a lot out of my phone.

Benchmarks prove nothing, except that it can get a higher score in benchmarks. This does not translate to real-world benefits. On top of that, just because you can hit a bigger number on benchmarks does not mean that it does so safely, for instance, I've heard of a lot of people disabling thermal throttling in order to get higher benchmarks. That will, in the least, reduce the life of the device and cause stability problems. Worst case, it could fry your SoC.

I disable thermal throttle every single boot up, every single time. I've had my n6 since Nov 2014 BTW. with thermal throttle off, and pushing it extremely hard, my n6 never ever goes over 75C. and I've tried to hit 100C(thermal shutdown), but just can't. my n5 would hit it in seconds my n6 will not ever hit it. so I see any effect of keeping thermal throttle disabled over the past year and a half? nope. my battery life is still awesome, I lose a percent every hour and a half. my performance is still awesome, as my phone scores highest in benchmarks. and my user experience is still incredible, as I get no lags, nor any other negatives. sure, maybe I'd see something from keeping thermal throttle off, if I used the device for 5+ years or so, but I won't.

I agree and benchmarks not my key focus I could left out only have done once since 2014. I am a power user and side by side with other N6 users they difference is noticeable based on how we do corp work not games. As stated earlier, depends on person if that's their choice but get choice with this fladship phone and with Pure Nexus gives a new feel to phone. Not all developers are like Beans the tweaks make the difference.

On that basis, sounds like it probably wouldn't throttle even if you didn't disable it, so why even bother?
Also, "pushing it" with single-threaded workloads may not get the temperature that far up.
I promise you that a heavy multi-threaded workload WILL make it as hot, fast, regardless of the binning.
