can we update the official firmware update with out using s-off? if yes how?
thx
Sorry, but I did not get the question? Can you please provide details, rephrase it?
my question is that is it necessary to update the firmware ? is there any official htc application or software which update the firmware, or we have to manually 1st s-off then install the firmware update?
hope you will get this time
thanks

you don't need to update the firmware necessary, but if you want to flash an unsigned firmware you'll need s-off..

What are you trying to do?
And what are you doing with the source?
Ruu or source code?
Kernel source code is for devs to compile their own kernel and use things from it, not for regular users like us

Wow, so you are stuck on froyo without an ota update to gingerbread?
Go to about -> software updates and check now
To see if you have any updates available
Amazing that you are still on froyo, in Australia the phone launched with gb!

What is your Hboot version too?
If you want to root, now would probably be a good time if you Hboot is compatible with revolutionary
Unless you can find a ruu or ota that is compatible, which I don't know
If you don't want to root you need to find an ruu or ota that works with your phone (I have no experience in doing this)
Another thing you could do is make a goldcard and flash any ruu (I did this)
Edit: guide to s off froyo

Yes, you can run the ruu
I don't know which one, either someone else can tell you or you need to research
Just ask someone get before doing it, to be sure, I don't know sorry

You should probably start by installing CID Getter from the market to determine what region your phone is made for. After that, it will be easier to determine which RUU you need to get you up and running. Post your CID here and maybe we can find the correct RUU for you.

i already hav an OTA file for the indian version but from one of the threads but dint know hw to use the file to update my phone....
The problem with OTA files is that they are incremental and are only meant for going from specific versions of software so the fact that you are on such on old version, it is highly unlikely that any OTAs are available, hence you need to flash a full RUU of either the most up to date or at least a much newer release.
As an example, I flashed the Virgin AU RUU that's available on here but it's too old to receive OTA updates. I then used a backup of the software that was on my phone when I bought it and that received an update within seconds of turning on.
So you will need to determine what your CID is and then you will be able to get a newer RUU that will allow you to start receiving OTA updates.

Once again, please put the phone in FASTBOOT USB mode and then run the command:
fastboot getvar all
and post the results. This will give us all of the information to help guide you in the right direction.
The problem with an OTA is that it is upgrades you from one specific version to another, so if you don't have the right version to start with, an OTA will not help you.
If since I've got my phone I am on custom rom. There's no way to get an update on a firmware or Hboot other than being on a stock ROM and received OTA?
for OTA you must have stock rom, recovery, kernel e no root but you can flash hboot and firmware manually via fastboot if S-OFF
p.s. sorry for my english

But by flashing custom rom, I don't update firmware?
no custom roms are based on a version of firmware but don't update your firmware on install. only official HTC OTA update your firmware,hboot,radio,recovery..... but if you are S-OFF you can flash it via fastboot

The ROM and the firmware are seperate.
The firmware usually contains hboot.
Custom ROMs do not include firmware.
The OTA includes firmware as well as a ROM patch and must be flashed together with ROM and Recovery both stock.
You can update the firmware manually.
If you want to flash a modified firmware (e.g., recovery & kernel removed), or a firmware for a different CID/MID/Part number you need S-Off.

restoring a nandroid will not update your firmware or hboot
theirs 2 ways to update firmware the way HTC does it is with a RUU or OTA update
But since we have s-off you can simply get s-off and flash any firmware you like

Flash the stock recovery. Take the OTA. REflash custom recovery. re-root.
Or, you wait until the firmware and update has been decrypted and modified, install those and keep your root from start.
Moreso for us S-OFF folks, but every time you update via OTA, the chances of you to get S-OFF become a tad slimmer.
Hi, I have an AT&T HTC One M7 with stock 4.3. I would like to update to 4.4 stock(whatever is the latest version), but I can't do OTA update because I don't have AT&T I am using a pre-paid carrier(AIO/Cricket) that uses their network.
How can I manually update? And if I do, does it completely reset my phone like a custom rom? Thanks.

Ota updates dosent reset the phone.
You can not receive ota update if you are not on the AT&T network unless you flash it manually. Flashing ota manually require S-OFF.
You could also use "close-to-stock" custom roms to get the latest version.
If s-off you can also change your CID/MID numbers and debrand your phone from at&t to the WWE or DevEd version to get future ota updates.

I'm familiar with most of this, I had a friend help me update from 4.1 or 4.2. He downloaded an ATT OTA update and just applied it to my phone somehow, I kept everything.
EDIT: How do I change it to WWE or DevED version, or if I do, does it still reset my phone updating this way?

if you have manually updated via OTA before your phone must be s-off. just flash my updates from here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2659374
most likely you'll need to use the 3.xx.502 RUU then the OTApkg

Yea I checked, mine is in fact, s-off.
So I download and install the "RUU Zip M7 UL JB43 SENSE50 MR Cingular US 3.17.502.3-decrypted "
Then install the "ATT_Sense6_OTAPkg.zip"
Correct? Also, will this reset my phone or do I keep my numbers/texts/apps/etc.?

No theirs 2 OTA their flash them in order the RUU then 4.4.2 then the Sense 6 .
Yes the RUU will totally wipe the phone. If you sure you didn't loose the preload/data folder you can try just flashing the 3.xx stock recovery then the 4.4.2 otapkg you won't loose data that way

none of those 3 will files will wipe the phone
using the RUU will for sure wipe the phone, which you may need if just flashing the recovery does not work (IE: Missing files from the data / preload folder)

Flashing a recovery will not generally wipe your phone.
I wasn't thinking and I didn't take the OTA update on my M8 HK before I went s off and rooted with TWRP. Is there any method I can use to go to 4.4.4 from 4.4.3 without having to do a factory reset? I guess I'm so new to this phone I need a step by step.
Since you're S-off you can flash the latest firmware and flash a 4.4.4 ROM afterwards. No need to go through the hassle of taking the OTA. That would require installing a stock ROM and flashing the stock recovery to your device.

When you say latest firmware is that only the firmware zip and not the whole system dump? That term is where I get a little confused sorry I've been out of the flashing scene for a while with unsupported phones.
When I say firmware, I'm referring to radios, PRI, etc. Look in the first post of the link below for the modified firmware for the 3.30.654.2 update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173
So the firmware is the only difference in 4.4.4 vs 4.4.3?
I flashed the modified firmware via hboot
