[Q] Forcing Lumia 520 Updates - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Morning all.
I bought a SIM Free Nokia Lumia 520 from Amazon the other day, and found out that its running Windows Phone 8.0.10211.204, which is not the GDR2 update. GDR2 is available for the 520, but its not approved by Vodafone (my network) here in Ireland yet (marked as coming soon on here => http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/availability-in-europe/). Anyway, since this is a SIM free phone and its unlocked to all networks, can i force it to update? I mean, why does my carrier have a say in my phone if its unlocked?
Thanks.

you can try flash with this (but this delete all from phone, dont forget backup)

[Q] Nokia Drive Beta+ Outside USA/Canada

hey all,
Nokia has made Nokia Drive Beta+ available on non Nokia devices. But only to USA and Canada i think.
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/nokia-drive-beta/9a0f7585-9f16-47d5-8041-28018fcea606
When i try to install and run it (not in Canada or USA) i get a message "Sim card not supported".
and then it won't run. When i remove the sim card it won't work either.
is there a workaround for this? i already changed the country settings to USA

Differences in firmware between two 8X's

I bought an HTX 8X on Vodafone business (unlocked) some months ago. Got an OTA upgrade recently and now I'm on:
firmware version is 3030.0.34101.401
OS: 8.0.10327.0
I also bought my wife an HTC 8X from an online retailer who sold it unlocked. However when the phone boots it displays the Three network logo briefly so I'm presuming the phone was originally tied to the UK Three mobile network? She has never got an OTA upgrade since I bought the phone for her in July 2013. Her phone's on:
firmware version: 1532.20.20100.771
OS: 8.0.10211.0
How do I upgrade this second 8X to the latest firmware/OS so that it is at least on par with my own 8X? I've checked for updates (OTA) and none are available. HTC don't appear to provide a firmware upgrade tool on their UK web site and the Windows Phone app, when loaded and when my wife's phone is connected via USB, does not offer any upgrade option.
Thanks.
The original carrier still controls the update schedule. Your second phone will get the update when the carrier approves it. If there's a way to force it to update faster, I'm not aware of it (though there might be, anyhow; there was for WP7 and we've been able to proxy some of the WP8 update network traffic).

Nokia Luma 520 Network Unlock

Hi all,
I have a Nokia Lumia 520 locked on the orange network. Is there any possible way to get this phone unlocked to use it on any network?
Don't mind if have to flash with new rom etc.
Thanks in advance
Crampo
Ask the carrier or ask Nokia, or buy an unlock from somebody. To the best of my knowledge there is no pure software/firmware fix right now. These days, there usually isn't; the SIM lock is implemented separately from the rest of the device firmware.

[Q] ATIV S Neo (SPH-i800) Sprint SIM Unlock

Hey guys,
I am in Spain. I asked Sprint to SIM unlock my phone before I left and they said it worked but it did not. I bought a movistar SIM and all I get is 'no service.' Under Cellular+SIM options, it is in CDMA only mode and the option to change it is greyed out. I was in 8.1 so I flashed to 8.0.10328.78 and called Sprint. They want me to update my network profile to send the command to unlock it but it isn't working over WiFi.
The phone knows that the SIM is there, I can access the SIM applications, read the SIM ID and when I turn on the phone with it inserted it says 'switched to CDMA only.' So I think it is still SIM locked. Is there a way I can unlock it? I've never had to deal with this before.
No ideas? I need to know whether I should give up and try to return the plan I bought.

Can Sprint version Ativ S neo unlock ?
Agreed
Just adding to the overall knowledge base here.
I am experiencing the exact same problem.
1. I purchased my phone unlocked (though it was previously on Sprint). I have previously been able to use foreign SIM cards (in France), without issue.
2. At some point, I installed the Developer's Preview of WP8.1 and lost the ability to roam domestically or internationally.
3. I am now in Israel, and tried an Israeli SIM card, but it was on a GSM network. It connected to the network, but showed up as international roaming. Ooops, guess I need to fix that little WP8.1 Beta issue...
4. I decided to flash my phone back to WP8 GDR3, which seems to have un-unlocked my phone. Now when I plug my Israeli SIM card in, my phone automatically switches to CDMA mode.
5. However, if I pop a Sprint SIM card in, I have the ability to switch to Global Mode again.
I have the MSL, but I cannot figure out where I would enter it to get this to stop happening.
FYI.
I had a problem , I live in Ukraine , my phone was unlocked , but when I installed 8.0 my phone worked only in CDMA mode with a Sim card from my service , I updated to 8.1 again using the preview for developers and settings again appeared global regime.

EE blocking updates on 7 Plus?

Just swap over my Sim from EE to O2 after reading something on reddit, then checked for updates and by magic there it is May Security Update 2.22A
I originally side-loaded 8.1 few days ago but was still on the April security with no update.
Now i have a feeling EE got some agreement in place with Nokia & other Android vendors over updates if using an EE sim you basically wait like the contract phones for updates, if this being the case then it goodbye EE and move back to Three.
What your thoughts on this?

I have the same problem with EE. But I am still on 8.0 and Feb security patch. BTW how did you update to 8.1, I tried via VPN as suggested by Nokia support but it didn't work.

Head here reg your phone and download the downgrade from Android P which is 8.1.
https://www.nokia.com/en_int/phones/developer
Now easiest way to install it without using ADB is to put it on the phone storage & install from SD in the recovery menu, you might get some error's after it's installed but don't worry about these 8.1 will be fully and error free on your phone, then you need another sim other than EE then you receive the May update or you could try another sim first and see if the 8.1 with may patch shows up.
Edit
also forgot to mention on 8.1 you can enable wifi calling on EE something you cant do on 8.0.

I can confirm also. After swapping Sim, I've got v2.22A
I installed the 8.1 ROM (via ADB) on my TA-1055 last week. Just swapped out my EE SIM for a Three SIM and the May security update was available. I then switched back to the EE SIM and it disappeared. Switched back to Three again and have now upgraded successfully.
Edit: I just realised that EE are now selling the Nokia 7 Plus, so I guess they're blocking / delaying updates until they've completed their own testing.
I'm on ID (Carphone Warehouse's network) and they too are blocking the update.

Could this be the reason for delay?
Do they have to add something to the firmware to enable it?
I am on Three in Ireland and I do not have any option in settings for WIFI calling.
I'm on Plusnet Mobile which piggy backs on EE and have seen no updates since I purchased my phone on release day......
Took my SIM out yesterday, replaced with on old O2 one and rebooted - hey presto 3 updates downloaded over wifi and installed. Everything now working with my Plusnet SIM on 8.1 June security
I'm BT sim and no update. I removed sim, factory reset and got 2 updates via wifi with May security. Put in BT sim and a few days later got the June security upate.
Don't understand that as the carrier should have no influence on updates on this phone as they come direct from Google because this is an Android One phone. I can understand if the phone is from EE (I.e. on contract) as I have an LG G6 contract phone which has had no updates from Nougat and only 1 security update in Jan .

same experience here
1055 uk. plusnet network SIM . bought phone via John Lewis. EE app was instaled on phone
changed to not working SIM fro freedompop and 3 upates immediately. including june security patch
So what happens when you put the EE sim back in and EE finally issue the update?
