Can I change DNS if I am rooted? - Google Chromecast

I should be getting my Chromecast tomorrow, and I just wondered, if I was to run one of the rooted images, would I be able to change my DNS servers so I can use unblock-us to access other Netflix services?
Cheers

From what I am reading on XDA, Chromecast runs SquashOS which is read only file system. Therefore, technically you can change the dns from google's dns servers to something else, however, it will not last a reboot. Every time you reboot you will have to run the commands to change the DNS servers.
I think you can change it permanently if you are able to modify the rooted binary image before flashing on chromecast.

Ah OK cool. I guess if I am going to root, I shouldn't allow my Chromecast to connect to the Internet straight away?
On another note, anywhere reliable I can download the Chromecast apk, since it's not available in the UK!

Changing the DNS will not let you use American Netflix and other things as you still have to block a bunch of other DNS' from blocking you.

Chromecast gets the DNS information from your DHCP server / router.
Just set up a DHCP server on your computer, pass it any DNS information you want, turn off DNS on your router.

I thought the Chromecast had Google's DNS servers hard coded into it?

It is possible, but why would you do such a thing?
You are already connected to the internet using wifi? What does the proxy accomplish for you?

Well my school blocks apps and some websites so the proxy would bypass it

It depends how they block it. A vpn would be better for what you are trying to do. If your urls are in cleartext and they use a commercial filter that uses pattern matching, it wont work.

Its a bit beyond the scope of this forum, but you can usually set it up right from your router if it is modern or high end.
Otherwise you will need a server. windows and linux can do this. You are are probably looking to build an ipsec vpn. Just google it. It can be tricky. On the milestone side, you need a rom that supports a tunneling kernel module (older ROMs mostly). This is usually called tun0.

ive been trying to get it to work for hours, setting up a private vpn on windows 7, looking for free vpn services, this is rather difficult

Xoom VPN client?

Looking to use vpn on the xoom to get into my corporate account.
I just got the 3g xoom yesterday so I haven't really looked to see if there is something already in the OS, but any help to get pointed into the right direction would be awesome.
Thanks!

The xoom has built in VPN, just go to Settings > Wireless > VPN
It supports PPTP, L2TP, L2TP/IPsec PSK and L2TP/IPsec CRT

N7 Web filtering.

8 year old is getting Nexxy 7 for Christmas. Need to put some restrictions in place to prevent his precious eyes seeing things he shouldn't ; )
Does anyone know of any decent apps\methods to restrict web browsing?
I think I have everything else covered - with the help of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1997986
Suppose if it comes to it I can just freeze the browser with tit backup.
Thanks,
Andy.

If you are looking for a free solution opendns might be an option for you... You set the dns servers either in the device or router
Opendns then filters traffic based on your ip... Might be worth a look
Steve
Thanks for reply.
Have thought about this.. How do you go about changing DNS servers on Android though? (It would probably be 4.2)
Setting the DNS on the router I could do - but that would filter everything in the house wouldn't it?

Not something I thought about. The lol a quick Google search gives a few reply... There is a set dns application in the play store.
Thought about doing it on the router... Connecting to any other network would result in unfiltered access so not ideal.... There are other proxy services out there... Might be worth looking in play store for a solution?

Wifi HTTPS Issue

Hey guys, so ever since updating to 4.3 I've been having trouble with my wifi connection. It's not just mine it's my partners as well we have C6903's running the latest generic au firmware. It's seems that when connected to wifi I can access normal websites it works fine but if they use https they time out as if I didn't have internet. I've noticed to that apps that I assuming use ssl such as hangouts and the bank apps don't work either but apps such as tapatalk work fine. Anyone else having an issue like this or know how to fix it? Btw I've tried changing dns settings to Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and still no luck.

Type of connection (WiFi or 3G/4G) should not affect to the SSL, I think there is a problem with you router. Check that TCP port 443 is open.
For your information, I'm on 4.3 (.136) too and I have no problems with secured content.
Well that's what I thought too, but then why do no other devices on my network have an issue?

Chromecast adblock

Someone please make an ad block for Chromecast.
I dont think this would be possible if my understanding of how the chromecast works is correct. Once you cast things like youtube, the job of recieving the content is left to the chromecast, so youd need an app that would remove ads then cast that. Otherwise the only thing i could think of is if you made some kind of ad blocking proxy like what DD-WRT does and run your chromecast through that, quitr certain that needs a rooted chromecast though. Of course, an even better solution would be, at least in youtube's case, for google to fix the implementation of ads, at present the skip ad button is shown onthe tv screen, so you are forced to watch the sometimes 5 minute long ads. I may be completely incorrect in saying this, as i said, this is just from my understanding.

It appears YouTube adaway(xposed module) was just updated to do this, seems to have worked from my testing, cant fully confirm yet though.

Using the official youtube app on my Nexus 6, I'm getting frequent ads when watching youtube videos via chromecast. But now I've implemented an ad-blocker using a raspberry pi as an ad-blocking dns server (search for "pi-hole" if interested).

DD-WRT has something like this as well.

It appears to have started very recently. Every video I get a damn ad now. It's not related to the current version as I'm on v5. I don't use Xposed, so I guess I'm screwed.

I dont think you'd be unscrewed using xposed anyway, the update for the module didnt actually fix the ads, i got a 12 minute long ad the other day.

All the requests are SSL so you'd need to root your CC and set it to use the proxy. Also apparently YouTube adblock DOES work you just need an old YouTube version, so it would probably be easier to give that a shot as long as you're on with using an old version.

Okay. Thank you. I'll give an old version a try. On that note does anyone know how to make updates for apps not show up on the play store? There's a couple apps I like to stay on old version with for various reasons like this.

If I remember correctly you go to manage apps, all find the app you're hunting for click on it and it'll open app info
and just under force stop you should have the option to untick the checkmark for show notifications.
Hope it helps you
Hey guys, just noticed something, chromecast doesn't or rarely plays ads before a video that has low view count so if someone could spoof the nr. Of views the video actually has naybe chromecast would not think to play ads, anyways, just putting it out here

The reason for that is probably due to the fact that those videos are not from partnered channels, unless somethings changed recently ads only show on partnered channels.

So isn't there a way to spoof youtube into thinking all videos aren't partnered? Just brainstorming

Doubtful, if you use the right version of YouTube adaway then it blocks the ads
