[Q] How to change the owner name without factory reset? [solved] - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone was setup in the shop where I bought it, and I never had a chance to type my "display name" (this is what apps like WhatsApp show to other people). Is there a way I can add this after setup has been finished, or must I factory reset? (Note: I'm not going to root yet.)
Thanks!
Edit: I found it can be accessed from the quick-toggle pane. The upper left button. Click it, click the main identity, and click "edit profile". Add a name.

Not sure if I get you right, but:
Settings - Info - Phone Identity - Phone Name
Is it that what you're searching for?

Thank you, but I don't think that's it. Phone name says "HTC One". This is probably an identifier used for hostname/debugging/bluetooth, but what I'm looking for is my own personal name. For example, e-mail programs might use this to set a default "from" name. WhatsApp uses it to tell others what my name is.

I don't recall setting anything other than the phone name during Sense setup. Whatsapp display name is in Settings > Profile

I don't recall seeing it myself, but I'd bet my new phone it's part of the setup. It's part of Google Android and Samsung Android. It's the last step after entering your e-mail address.

Try:
google.com/dashboard
Login, and there you can change a "name" (Don't know if thats what you're looking for)

Is your phone a Google Play edition? I'm using Modaco.SWITCH so I've gone through the Sense and GPe setup many times. Only in GPe have I set up a name.
Where are you seeing this display name that you want changed?

I found it by poking around more. Thanks! See edited first post if curious.

Saving New Contact Numbers Without Hyphens

Okay I know this is really stupid thing, but it's annoying. In my Google Contacts I have my numbers saved without hyphens. Simply because I think they look ugly. Anyway, the problem is, I can't seem to save new numbers on my phone without having them.
Like I'll start typing: +1416... Then all of a sudden it turns into +1-416-...
I'll try and delete the hyphen but it deletes the number in front of it as well, hence can't save number without hyphens. If I don't save the number without the 1, then it works fine. But I like having all my numbers with +1 on them. Anyway, is there a solution to this?
Really? what did the hyphen ever do to you?

if you really really want to try this:
1. go to the name field and type out the number ... so +1416******** whatever it is
2. then hit MENU + A
3. then hit MENU + X
4. now go to where you enter phone number
5. hit MENU + V
6. see if that pasted the number without the hyphens

And about what it did to me... It's a downer! -_- <-- look at him! It's just my entire phone book started without them, so I rather keep it that way. Unison and all.

there was an app i used to have that was made to do what you want ... i cant remember the name right now but do a search and you might find it (it allowed you to format the numbers in many different ways)
EDIT: found it: http://www.cyrket.com/package/org.peterbaldwin.client.android.cleanup

np ... used the same app to ADD the hyphens lol
I used "Unhyphenizer Pro" from the android market, it removes hyphens from contacts database and vCard files. Worked on my desire S.
To me it helps me with the separation of the numbers.

Need Help Badly : My Phone is LOCKED

I use pattern to unlock my Galaxy S, but my son played with my phone and accidentally input too many patterns and make my phone only can be unlocked by signing into google account.
I typed my correct gmail user name and password, but still can't sign in and unlock the phone. I am also using APN ON/OFF application, and the APN status is OFF. I am thinking maybe it makes my phone unable to connect to the Internet and sign in to gmail.
Is there anyone know how to solve this problem without resetting the phone into factory default? And if I need to factory reset my phone, how can I do it because the 3 button combination is not working with my Galaxy S?
I'll be grateful if there is someone who can help
Many people have had this issue to some extend, most of them simply reflash the phone since that fixes it.
I remember someone wrote that you somehow could bypass it, sadly cant seem to locate the post anymore.

Try to put your gmail login info from all different gmail account you have.
Also try this. Take out battery>wait for 3 hours > but the battery back > press power button for 20 seconds (This method was listed by one guy on other forum).
One guy also mentioned this method.
AGAIN ITS the lamest thing you could ever think of, anyway heres how it goes,
1) Log in to your google account on your pc, the same account you registered for your phone
2) After logging in look at the top right corner of your inbox/email page, it would say your google username. Like say if you name is John, and you have a google id thats registered to your galaxy s as ,[email protected] Now this google id on the top right corner of the page would be displayed [email protected]
3) Type in the google id, thats visible on the right hand top corner of your page ([email protected]) into your galaxy s handset locked page, and type in the password.
TADA AND YOUR ON TO THE NEW SCREEN TELLING YOU TO PUT IN ANOTHER PATTERN.
Thanks
Zoh
If you cant login by computer then go here
HTML Code:
https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery
...And if you don't remember your secret (recovery) question then try the following method (check the link)
EDIT: you can also try this (very helpful to lot of ppl with the same problem) http://www.docstoc.com/docs/39761478...d---Locked-Out
Any way try all the methods and let me know if it works...BEST OF LUCK

this solution is with thanks to another person on another site...
You need a WiFi connection available for this to work!
1) Call your phone from a different phone.
2) Answer the call. While still connected...
3) Hit the BACK button on the phone (the arrow softkey)
4)This takes you to the home screen (it might take a few attempts, it depends on your timing. It took me 4 attempts)
5)Drag down your notifications bar and turn the WiFi on if it isn't already.
6)Close the notifications bar then hit the MENU softkey, select Settings then "Accounts and sync".
7)Click "Add Account" and select Google.
8)Sign up for a new google account as normal.
9)When the signup process is complete (and it must successfully create an account) you can hang up the call. (Do not sync the accounts)
10)Now when the phone asks you to unlock it using google credentials, use the ones from the account you just created. It will now ask you for a new security pattern, then for the same pattern again to verify.
11)Once you are back into the phone, turn off this "feature" until Google release a fix for the bug.
12)You can now delete the "false" google account which you just created from the phone. You should log into google and delete it from there too really.
13)Now reboot your phone. When the phone starts up and it still says "Phone Locked" don't panic!, Just drag the screen out of the way to unlock the phone, just like you did before you activated the pattern security.

[HOW TO] Manually invoke send text template

Hey guys,
I made a little discovery today while attempting to figure out a way to send native SMS messages on the gear.
What I discovered is a way we can manually invoke the text template popup to any specified number, this can be useful if you want to save various text templates in gear manager and would like to actually send them, rather then only just use them to reply with.
At the moment the only way to preform the intent is using tasker or adb shell, this is more a educational post for those of you who would be considered advanced users can possibly make it a little more user friendly !
Perhaps someone can code a simple app with a contact list so that we can send text templates, @st-tps I'm talking about you
SHELL COMMAND:
Code:
am start -a android.intent.action.VIEW -n com.samsung.accessory.texttemplateprovider/com.samsung.accessory.texttemplateprovider.TextTemplateListActivity -e phone_number 0401010101
*NOTE* Replace "0401010101" with the desired destination number.
I will also include a tasker example once I make one.
Happy hacking.
I´m definitely up for the challange.
I´ll try to get something running as soon as I get some time to look at it.
Another interresting thing is the /data/data/com.samsung.accessory.texttemplateprovider/databases/texttemplate.db wich stores the Templates. If we find a way to edit the db we could actually write what message we want to the db, then open the dialog and chose the newly created message and send it to what number we want. I´we got some ideas about this, I´ll try em out as soon as I get your shell commands working.
That is about how close we can get to native SMS right?

Oh thats awesome, didn't realize the templates were stored there..
If we can edit the database, We would have a kind of working solution, although I really want to figure out how to send custom text. Rather to relying on the templates.
Also another thing I havnt figured out yet tho is how we can pull the contacts from the phone, it doesn't look like there stored on the gear anywhere that I have found anyway. It seems there pulled from the host phone everytime the contacts app is executed.

My plan is to make it something like this:
Start app, choose recipient and write the message. The message is added to an local texttemplate.db file with only that row. When you press Send, the original texttemplate.db file is renamed, the local one is pushed to the directory, the Reply Dialog opens with only one option (The message you recently created) select the message and it gets send away, the "one row" .db is then deleted and the original one got it´s real name back...
If this works, nothing gets f**ked up by changing in the real .db file. This only my thoughts so we will see if I manage to achieve it...
The contact name and phone number for recieved messages and missed calls are stored in NotificationSync.db in the table SyncNotiInfo and in fields mMainText and mPhoneNumber. I assume that info is used when replying to messages.

i get my contacts through google contacts after tethering with my phone.
the problem with 'stock' contacts was that it took ages to load (i guess it's synchronized everytime you open the app) and most contacts are missing on my list due to custom label (instead of just 'mobile' i use labels like AT&T).
Here comes a real early beta (More like an alpha) of NativeSMS, the most fancy about it may be the progress bar at launch
What it does: list all your contacts (If you´we sometimes synced with Google Contacts that is) that´s got a phone number attached to it, tap a contact and wait until the template box appears, select template and click send.
What it doesn´t do: Sort the contacts alphabetically. Save the list until next appstart. Create own messages. No fancy icon yet.

I´ll certainly do, good point.
I´ll put in a check for com.android.provider.contatcs in the create part of the Activity, if OK - Load contacts, if NOK - Message box about missing app and then exit.
---------- Post added at 11:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:57 AM ----------
Small update, I´we done some tests regarding editing the db file, very unsuccessfull..
Pulled the original db to computer and did the edit.
Try 1: Delete all rows but one and sent back to Gear - App FC when the Dialog would show
Try 2: Only did minimal changes, editet first row only - App FC when the dialog would show
Try 3: Edit one row only, and renamed the journal file aswell, the only valid file in directory is the edited db wich opens fine in Root Browser - App FC when the Dial would show.
Anyone got ideas what´s causing the Template send FC?

Nope, permissions and owner is the same..
The only difference is that the original db file got a journal file attached to it.
Will try to copy both the db and the journal to computer, edit and then push them both back.

Hmm, I think we need to dig a little deeper.. perhaps figure out how the JSON requests are being sent to phone and generate our own.

You can try changing your name card. Pull down the notification shade, tap your name/profile icon, tap your name in the floating window, and tap the 3 dots to edit the name. I just tried and it's working fine.

Thanks but that didn't work for me. it is still using my full name. the funny thing is that it sometimes pronounces it right and sometimes it doesnt.

Hmm. Try deleting your "me" contact card and make another one. It must be sourcing from your accounts.
If you use G+ you can change your profile name within the app. It will update on all your Google products. The OK Google Now feature pulls your name from your Google profile.

Marshmallow login problem

This is a new one for me, but here it goes:
Coming from a 5.1.1 ROM, a full wipe (just not internal data), then installing one of the two 6.0 ROMs I get the same error upon start up:
After putting in my email address and password, I get the notice "You must login as one of the device owners", or something to that effect. They keywords there would be the device owners...I'm not sure what that means and I've never had a problem with my account.
I've had my same gmail account since 2004 and I'd hate to have to change it only because of Marshmallow.
I haven't seen anyone else experiencing a problem like this, and I'm concerned as to why it seems to be unique in my case. I an NOT encrypted, neither before the install or after (custom kernel).
Unlike Lollipop, there is no "skip" button when logging into a Google account, you HAVE to with Marshmallow upon first install.
Any help would be appreciated.

The first 6.0 ROM I flashed made me reset my password for some reason. No matter how many times I'd enter in the CORRECT password, I was told something wasn't right and got kicked back to the login screen. Once I changed the password on my PC, I went back to the ROM and thats when the scenario in the OP happened.
It looks like I have to wait...or create a new email address possibly?

One question I do have is if I can have multiple gmail accounts linked to one device. I have another gmail account but I looked at the "My Device" settings, and it has no device attached to it and no option to attach one!
Well, yes you can, but you'll have to "attach" the account from the device in question.

I think I just did that, verified phone number, added google account to the 5.1.1 ROM, I'm not sure where else I'd attach the device.
You need to first be logged in, with your original account...
And by the way, I saw you were trying to get help in another thread as well. I don't know why you ended up in this situation (being unable to log in in the first place) but I do know you need to wait 72 hours. If you can't log in after that, come back and we'll try to help you out...
