[Q] Can the Vivid be used on Straight Talk?

Hi all. A friend of mine was looking to get an Android on Straight Talk. Before picking up one of the abominable offerings, I noticed that Straight Talk takes unlocked AT&T and T-Mo phones. I wanted to double check if anyone could confirm that it works. Can anyone fill me in?

it doesnt have to be unlocked... i havent tried the vivid, but i did sell my inspire to a co-worker and he had no issues using it on straight talk.

Tell him to order the sim for att...from st8talk... and it will work no problem

Straight Talk is actually an MNVO (mobile network virtual operator) that runs on the AT&T towers, so any AT&T device is compatible on a basic level. You will need to change the apn for data access. I think it is att.mnvo or something similar. I have read that your data speeds will likely be throttled to a lower speed. If data speed is important, you may also want to check to see if you will have access to LTE and/or HSPA+ networks.

yea exactly... i just set a phones apn up with st8talk and their website has a lot of info on what they require

Thanks for the EXCELLENT reply. That was extremely helpful. I do have a couple followup questions.
Straight Talk is accepting T-Mo phones as well. Would those also run off the AT&T network still?
Also, she alleges that she doesn't have AT&T service where she lives. She is currently using a Wal-Mart purchased Straight Talk flip phone. Can someone explain that???

Yes, so they would have to be network unlocked. Also, since T-MO and AT&T have some differences in frequency bands and data transmission protocols for high speed, most T-MO phones won't be able to access high speed data.

I have read that AT&T and T-MO have roaming agreements for voice (not sure about data) and that these agreements only apply for monthly plans, not pay as you go. It could be that the monthly plan MNVO users also have the benefit of the roaming? If you are curious, ask her to check her network settings and it should indicate if she is connected to at&t/smart talk or if it is t-mo. Since it is covered under agreement, I don't know if it shows up as a roaming status on the main screen. Assuming she is correct about the AT&T thing to begin with...

Right now, she's just using an old dumb phone her parents picked up from Walmart, so information is limited at best. Doubly so since I'm in Tennessee and she's in Alabama.

Do you have the model and brand of the phone she is using?
If it is AT&T Sim from Straight Talk will operate on ATT towers. If it is TMO sim will operate on T-Mobile towers.
If her area is not covered by T-MO or ATT, then she may be using a Straight Talk CDMA phone which could run on another provider like Verizon.
I have the Vivid with Sraight Talk and no problems. I do have an issue sending MMS messages, which is an issue with my phone (I switched the SIM to a Galaxy and to HTC Inspire and I was able to send MMS).
Does anybody know why? (I'm using the APN recommended by Straight Talk).

To clarify a few things: I too have Straight Talk on my brothers Vivid with. Att SIM. I do NOT suggest getting a Tmo SIM. Reception is awfull if you aren't in a large city. Also you can NOT roam the ATT towers with the Tmo SIM. Data Speeds are NOT throttled at all and I regularly hit 700-1000KB dl or 6-8megs however you calculate. Straight Talk will throttle you if you repeatedly use over 2GB of data a month buy for 45$ a month you can't lose. Hope this helps

Are you able to send MMS messages with your Vivid?
I'm able to connect to Internet and make calls. I configured the APN correctly and I still can't send MMS. If I switch my SIM to any other phone, I'm able to send MMS. Any idea on this?

Hi gifr, yes mms works perfectly. It may be an issue with your Rom, your Texting App, or an apn setting. That's the only thing I think it could be.

I have been thinking of doing this with NET10 which it is my understanding is the same thing as Straight Talk and works with both AT&T and T-Mobile towers.
Is the data really unlimited or are you slowed down after a certain amount?
Does Visual Voicemail work?
Can specified only for AT&T and T-Mobile apps be installed and used?

Visual voice mail doesn't work on my vivid but everything else does.

Handcent SMS app now has the option to set APN specifically for MMS. That's what it took to get MMS working on my Vivid on Straighttalk. My setup is:
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
Proxy: 66.209.11.33

That is a depreciated APN... You wanna use the 'phone' or 'pta'...
You'll have data drops and places where MMS won't send with that

FWIW these are the settings currently supplied with the AT&T 4G enabled SIMs that Straight Talk has just begun selling. Work fine on a S4 Google edition.

[Q] About htc vivid and new Sim's

I just got an HTC Vivid in the mail today and i have an old Cingular Sim card that's capable of achieving the H+ technology in for example the htc inspire. Now since i live in Portland and there is no LTE yet only H+ why when i put my card in it will make and receive calls and texts but not let me connect to data. Note this is stock ics that the phone was shipped with.
My question is why cant my old Sim work if it can use H+ on my inspire but not on my vivid and also whats different about the newer Sim's then older ones?

this has been asked before and it seems to have something to do with how new your sim card is...mine didnt have to be changed but provisioned for lte
and some have had to have theirs replaced.. here is the thread that it was it was talked about in

The Vivid defaults to using the pta APN. The old SIM cannot connect to pta. You can manually make a legacy APN for wap.cingular or phone which will let you connect, but that's inadvisable.
I'd presume that the reason that a new SIM is required is because you're moving from a 3G technology to a 3-4G bridge technology. I don't know if you have the original Cingular GSM "64k SmartChip", but I had to upgrade that when I first got a 3G enabled phone.

oh i see yea i actually had the Cingular raising the bar one with the orange man logo on it also had blue orange and white color and it shows a 3G in flames. is that the original one?

I had that one, they gave me a new SIM at Best Buy.

No, that's a 3G-enabled SIM card. It works on UMTS and HSPA, unlike the 64K SmartChip (the GSM SIM) that I had from when EDGE was the best thing since sliced bread. That's why you never needed to upgrade your SIM when faux-G hit on the Inspire.
When I upgraded to the SYNC (see sig), that was right before Cingular was bought by ATT. I had to get a new SIM at that point, and they gave me the one you describe. I had to get another one when I got the Shine, as the contacts on it had corroded (or something; the card refused to read); that time, I got one that said AT&T on it (it was a palette swap of the Cingular card). I was still forced to upgrade yet again when I got the Vivid.

im just going out on a limb here, but i would say it has to do with the apn settings since you have an old cingular sim in a new phone im guessing the apn has been updated for new technology advancements

APN settings are stored in the ROM, not the SIM. The SIM authenticates you with the APNs that it is provisioned for.

I work for At&t, they lie about their data speeds. So basically, the phone might display H+ when your signal is really strong on 3G networks; the OTA updates on the Inspire wanted to make you feel like you were part of the fastest network At&t had to offer at the time. So if you didn't have a 3G sim, you were robbing yourself on speed capabilities, maybe barely but none-the-less. But Cingular SIM cards can only connect to 3G speeds at max. In other words, you're at the max speed for 3G which prompted the phone to display an H+ icon. The Vivid is an LTE capable phone and needs a SIM card with LTE capabilities in order for data to work, even though the new SIMs will also work on 3G, but not the other way around on cingular sims. Oddly enough, you will see a 4G icon when you're maxed out on HSDPA even though you may not be on true LTE networks...as is the case where I live. Hope this wasn't too confusing

I see what you mean everyone yea i actually went in the other day to a store and got a new one for LTE even though there is no LTE in Oregon yet. But i do understand because i did use my Cingular Sim in my vivid and calling/texting did work fine just the data did not work so pretty much for faster internet you need a Sim card that can be provisioned for LTE is what im hearing. Also for the newer tech you need a new one

You can add another APN setting very easily until you can get a new LTE provishoned SIM....THE NEW APN will give you 2g, 3g, HSPA+, Text and Voice....then when you get the new LTE Sim...you can go back and set it to the APN that is named pta....
Let me know by replying if you need the settings for the wap.congular APN and I will post...

Thanks for telling us what many of us probably suspected. I have always thought that most of what we are told is just "marketing hype" until proven otherwise. Much like the burger commercials tha make the subject look soooo tantalizing and huge when in fact it might taste great but is not THAT large.
It is nice to have someone on the inside share "reality" with us!!!

No sorry as they are a MVNO of t-mobile they use t-mobile bands which is why your only getting edge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Mobile Get straight talk. You can get 4G on your vivid with them.

Simple Mobile is a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) that uses Tmobile's network. Different frequencies for 3G/4G. You can use H2O or Straight Talk.

sorry what these guys are saying is correct ...i know for a fact that st8 talk has 4g and its pretty damn good for what it is...
mv networks are highly throttled and you wont get umts service from them cuz thats tmobiles "4g"

I beg to differ about the throttiling part. I use straight talk in an old phone for usb tethering and get about a good 900 kB to 1MB on straight talk.
Edit: I was mistaken i met gophone but i think thats still considered and MVNO

Not at all lol its the modem that's in the device. Think of you trying to speak English to a completely Japanese speaking person. Same concept you cant fix that with any type of software.

I think you are right. I don't thing ST throttles their data. I am on Straight Talk here in Puerto Rico and I get 7mb down/1mb up. And this is on the pseudo 4G, not LTE. LTE is available in Puerto Rico but in the major cities, not where I live. They have, however, stopped my internet service once, after I did a few downloads and some streaming from pandora on a single day. I know I did not go over 2GB total (3G Watchdog), but I did go over 400MB on a single day. Had to call c/s and listen to a speech about how my data was unlimited but actually not, for about 20 mins to get service back. After that I have kept it under 100MB per day and no problems.

i dont know how old that phone is but my brother in law has a vivid with st8talk and he in fact gets 4g on it..the go phones sims are made for cheap old phones that are 2g i think..at least thats the way it is here in dallas you cant find a "smartphone" with the go phone line up.. there always the cheapest phones but you can make it work in a smartphone but you will be stuck on the 2g network...str8talk on the other hand has smartphones in their line up...but they are both mvno networks cause thats what you have to put in the apn but att knows what network your using and their not going to let you get the best of them lol with their go phone plan.. str8talk has to "buy" their usage and they offer a better throttle if any

You have to "dummy" the system to use the vivid but it works you get 4g just no LTE and theres no throttle. I get the same speeds as my post paid account.

Yea, its a rip they only give you 500 MB of data for 25$ which on post paid I believe you get 3 GB for the same price. You just have to use the WAP apn and not the PTA apn

How do you "dummy" the system to use the vivid on simple mobile 4g speeds. Here's my dilemma, I have tested the 2 StraightTalk sims, AT&T & T-Mobile on the Vivid and the 4g was way faster on T-mobile sim vs At&t sim. The ST AT&T sim didn't get over 1 mb per second in speed test, whereas the ST TMO sim was much faster almost 2 mb, but a T-mobile phone on either ST TMO or Simple Mobile was faster speeds 5mb or better, so I got rid of the phone and got a HTC sensation. But of course this is a downgrade, I'm definitely going to have to get a better phone soon. I like the AT&T phones better than TMO, but want to get 4g speeds on a AT&T phone using ST TMO sim. So I was curious as if "dummy" the system or different apn settings will allow a AT&T phone pickup ST TMO 4g speeds.

He was referring to Att go phone plan...
For the most part it isn't APN settings that decide what you connect to (although for late you do need a PTA APN...) its mainly hardware/very deep software that controls it...it all depends on the frequencies of service the phone can except and what the service provider (t-mo...etc) broadcast their service in...
I was always under the impression that it was strictly determined by hardware what the phone accepts...but a few months ago I read a thread here where I guy explained that it is controlled by very deep software and with the right knowledge you can change it to your needs...he claims to have done it on many phones...but it takes a ton of work and he only did it for devices he owned as he didn't feel it was worth it to do it for devices he did not own...and teaching someone was out of the question as it was too complex to teach...

i believe that you can reprogram the modem. like on the skyrocket they can get 4g on tmobile because someone reprogramed thier modem. and there was some talk of trying to do this on the vivid somewhere on these forums lol.

I think for now, I will just have to stick with T-mobile phone with T-Mobile sim on straight talk, getting some 4g speeds for just $45, only people beating that deal is Metro, and they still have spotty areas. I just think that AT&T has better phones. But I thought about this the other day, with if the fact that the Vivid is a LTE phone vs just regular HSPA+ like my Htc Sensation. Is it possible that the Vivid, HSPA+ doesn't get as fast as speeds on T-Mobile HSPA+ network? I don't know but from what a lot of people are saying the Straight talk At&t 4g coverage is terrible.

i believe that you can reprogram the modem. like on the skyrocket they can get 4g on tmobile because someone reprogramed thier modem. and there was some talk of trying to do this on the vivid somewhere on these forums lol.

In case you still need help, here is what I suggest:
For the unlock, use unlockusa.com to get your code. They're the fastest and most reliable on the market.

Google Edition Does Not Show LTE ON AT&T

I have the Google Edition and am on ST ( AT&T ) , I previously owned an HTC ONE X+ and had no problems getting LTE/4G but with the Google Edition I only get HSPA+. Is there a way to get LTE/4G on this device? Would it be possible to simply flash the radio's or an entire Rom for AT&T version.....or is it simply a "hardware" issue? Please advise....Thanks!!

I get LTE (displayed in the toolbar) on my GPe One on AT&T. Check Settings -> More... -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names, and make sure "ATT Phone" is selected and not "ATT WAP". Aside from that, I can't help!
FWIW, I used the official GPe RUU to turn my AT&T One into a GPe One, and have had no issues with LTE.

In addition to what was posted above, do the following.
Go do Phone>*#*#4636#*#*>Phone Information and set the preferred network type to "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto". That's what it should be. But now that I think about it, the the GPE didn't have that setting available to me. I had to pick something close. I think it said "LTE/GSM auto (PRL)". I don't think it is the correct setting for a phone on AT&T, but it worked since the GPE didn't have the correct option for me.

I'm on Straight Talk ( att compatible sim ) so I have to use their APN settings....however theirs has that WAP thing on it, should I remove it?

I checked that earlier and its on what its supposed to be on "LTE/GSM" . I even tried LTE only and got no signal at all.....Thats why I thought it might be the radio...because in my "About Phone" and Network Type setting it says HSPAA and HSPA+.

Sounds like it's your APN settings (assuming ST has your SIM provisioned for LTE). Create a new APN, try these settings, and report back.
NAME: straight talk
APN: tfdata

I tried the settings and there was no change, even speedtests were similar. I believe my problem is the version of the One that I have. I believe it does not support LTE (band 4) ....I need to know if it is possible to flash a RUU or Baseband and get the Band 4 of LTE working on this device....I believe it would be the 801n version that I need....Thanks for your help.

no one has come up a way yet to enable any additional bands on HTC One..

Has anyone been trying or is it just not that big of a deal to everyone? I know its been done on other devices....I've read something about changing the "build-prop" I think...I believe it would be a big deal especially the LTE ( band 4 ) that seems to be the main one....I believe its only the "unlocked" versions and I also believe its that way because LTE ( band 4 ) is AT&T's main LTE band and they don't brand unlocked phones so I think its HTC's way of sticking it to them...who knows...lol

You can check the 1700MHz Tmobile thread in general. Lots of effort were done in it.

Hi, I read somewhere that straight talk doesn't support LTE, so check whether you actually have it in your plan.

It does, I had it on my HOX+. I wish I would have kept that one....But I believe in order to have it you have to have one of their new lte sim cards.

It has to be something simple that's being overlooked. Have you called ST? If they don't have your SIM provisioned for LTE, that would stop you.

Yes, I've talked to ST. The problem is that this model does not have the LTE (band 4) radio....it has LTE (band 7).....I've been trying to find out if anyone has found a way to flash that frequency. No luck so far.

Here is a link to a thread where someone has posted a lot of radio dumps from different phone carriers for our device. I have not helped in anyway with what he has done there all credits go to him for his efforts. hopefully it helps you in some way.

Thanks...but I have that page bookmarked...lol. I tried flashing the AT&T radio and it didn't work. I've read somewhere that it has something to do with writing or re-writing of the Buildprop.....I have no idea what that is but apparently it has to do with the radio frequencies. Anyway, thanks for your response to my thread. Let me know if you hear anything...

TMO compatible ST sim would use Band 4.
Only a few cities in the US for ATT use band 4 LTE..
From what you state it sounds to me like you have a TMO ST sim not an ATT ST Sim.

Nope, I definitely have an AT&T compatible sim. I bought it straight from ST for my first phone, the HOX+. (At&t branded).
This is just so damn confusing. I can't understan the manufacturers, whats the problem with equipping each device to accept all the available bands...Simple...

Namely the cost. Qulcomm dings the OEM for every band they license. Then there's the cost of power amplifiers and associated hardware for each band.
I have two friends with ATT branded ones that I converted to GPE and they are running Net 10 (same as straight talk but without the walmart branding) and both have no problem with LTE. tfdata is the APN they are using.
On your sim card should be some numbers. does it start with 89014 ?
you're positive that you were getting LTE on your H0x? if it was running the stock ATT rom they show "4G" for HSPA+.
When did you last change your sim card? I know with Net10 if you had activated your sim before they started offering LTE you have to change to a new sim to get LTE. Net10 sims are dirt cheap (about 50 cents) so wouldn't hurt.
I would recommend switching from straight talk to net 10.
Same service, same company but with one core difference. ST is walmart's brand so as such they are the exclusve seller. Net10 refills can be bought on the open market, as can the sim cards.
And BTW, the One does support LTE on band 4. It's labled AWS on the spec sheet. Alaska wireless uses 2100mhz (band 4) and my One connects to their LTE no problem. The T-MO folks are whiny about not having 1700mhz HSPA+ support, which has nothing to do with LTE.

At&t note 3 on cricket wireless / aio

I'm planning on buying a note 3 at&t branded because I'd be using it on at&ts network but through cricket wireless. Does anyone have any exp in doing this? Does everything work? And LTE?

I think you'll be one of the first to test this. Cricket use to be cdma style communication whereas at&t is gsm. I believe at&t just merged aio wireless and cricket thus changing cricket from cdma to gsm. If this is true you won't have any problems whatsoever. Just pop in the SIM and it will probably update the apn settings automatically. You can find the apn settings on crickets website and enter them yourself if it doesn't.

Just to clarify I am already using aio/cricket for months on this device. All will work fine if you have been reading up on aio and cricket merger you would know att is killing off crickets cdma line and will be using GSM, op just make sure you let SM-N900A is UNLOCKED and that you get a sim card and you should be fine. As per 4g/4g lte you may as well go elsewhere you will get 4g/4g lte where available but remember AIO/CRICKET is throttled data, so no matter what you will be limited to a lower speed. If you need any help let me know I've been on aio for months (pre merger to the point I have an aio sim but cricket in the top left).

I'm from the Pittsburgh area but now I'm in savanna Georgia and I've had lte almost the whole way..... I'm on cricket wireless also and I've had no problems with them.... I get lte almost everywhere I go

Not to he offensive but tmobile sucks. Tmobile only has coverage (4g/4g lte) in major cities, aio/cricket runs off of AT&T network so you already get better coverage. Speeds may be throttled but I can do everything off it on these speeds, youtube, milk music, pandora no problems. When I had tmobile I was constantly on "edge"/2g, but on aio/cricket 75% of the time I'm on 4g lte and the rest I'm on 4g. OP unless you plan on never leaving a major city, just get aio/cricket.

I was on AIO for about a month, and now am on the merged Cricket with an Unlocked Note 3 (for another month). The 4g LTE data speed is capped at 8mbps. I have no problem streaming whatever I want. I had Verizon and most of the time I only got around that speed anyway. I looked at about every MNVO and provider for a cheaper way to do smartphones, and for 3 smartphones, I am at only $115 a month total with 2.5gb per line. I put out about $700 on a Note 3 and 2 S4 phones, and am saving about $115 a month on what it would cost me with AT&T or Verizon. The coverage for AT&T in my area is excellent. I have also found that the online chat is very quick and helpful with any questions. So far I am very pleased.
AT&T basically threw out Cricket and merely put the brand onto their existing AIO wireless. Given that there are so many more Cricket stores, it makes sense.

I am looking to purchase a note 4 either with T-Mobile, Verizon, or Att Wireless and use it on Cricket Wireless since you guys have done this with the Note 3. Will I be able to pop the Cricket sim card in and let it update by air or will I have to unlock all of these phones for this to work.. Also any suggestions for mms .. 4g LTE..etc will be appreciated..

If you get the N4 AT&T branded phone and plan to use cricket, you just put in SIM. Within minutes, you will get the configuration message, install and you're ready to go. No unlocking needed. With the Verizon and T-Mobile phones, you'll have to unlock. However, with any phone, unless you are on that branded phones service, you will not get OTA to new OS versions. This is not that big of a deal since you are already on xda, you can just go to your forum and more than likely find a flashable. [emoji3]

Im also doing the same now, just got a ATT note 3 to use it on cricket.. i have a note 3 on sprint but i just switched jobs and dont have reception at all, im trying it and if it works i might go to ATT later on, or who knows i might stay at cricket.. is way cheaper and 8mps is good for what i use it.. 55 per month with 10 GB thats a hell of a deal, I use about 8 to 10 on sprint right now

I'm not too much of a phone geek, but I just started using my ATT Note 3 on Cricket. My APN settings didn't automatically set with the Cricket SIM, but that was an easy change.
I'd suggest the ATT N4 just because ATT bought Cricket, and they're using the same towers now. All things the same, I think it would be the path of least resistance.
BTW, I was paying $120/mo. for Unlimited everything with a 20% corporate discount with ATT. I was only using an average of 1.8GB per month. That also included a partially subsidized phone every 2 years with a new contract.
Now my bill is $35/mo but I'll have to buy my next phone. I'm only on day 2 of the change, but it's a big deal for me after 14yrs with the same company.

I am currently using a AT&T branded Note 3 on Cricket, switched from Tmobile months ago. No need to unlock a AT&T branded phone or at least I didn't have to with my 3.
You can just put a SIM in and change the APN settings to Cricket's which are available on their website.
I've never had issues with dropped calls or losing data with Cricket. I'm paying 150 a month for 3 lines unlimited calls, texts and 10g data on each line.
