I'm having trouble making any application a system app. I have root etc. But every time I try, it fails with what I understand to be a read/write failure. I've tried titanium backup, systemapp mover, even ES root explorer and copying it manually. This is getting really frustrating and was never an issue on my old phone. Can someone tell me if it is possible, and how you did it on a HTC one.
Many thanks..

You probably need a custom kernel with R/W capability

So a while back I used a 1-Click root app. Don't recall which one. Then flashed CM6. Lately I've been noticing some permissions issues.
It started when I attempted to install the new Car Home from the market and couldn't. I tried using RootExplorer to unistall the old version with no luck. I've given it SU permissions but still no dice.
Today I tried to install the new YouTube app from the market but got the same results.
So I tried through ADB and can't navigate to /system/app.
# cd /system/app -- gives "cd: can't cd to /system/app"
# su cd /system/app -- gives "Permission denied"
I've also tried fix_permissions in the terminal with no luck. (I remember this from the G1 days. don't know if it is still used)
Anyone know what could be going on?
I'm not concerned about my warranty any more so I suppose I could unlock my bootloader if anyone thinks rooting the official way would help.
Thanks for your time.
Are you mounting Root Explorer in R/W?
Edit: I had probs mounting my Root Explorer into R/W, and eventually found out I had a bad version of busybox...

Wow I feel dumb. I was forgetting to mount in R/W. Got the old apps uninstalled. Still can't get the new apps installed.. Oh well I never use either of them anyway.
BTW any reason I couldn't cd to /system/app in ADB? Probably something else stupid.
Just confirm that the apps are removed (my busybox issue sometimes made it appear like the apps were gone, but when I looked again, they were back).
Did you reboot after removing?

To upgrade system apps:
1. Uninstall the old version using Root Explorer or Titanium Backup (I've found Titanium to be easier).
2. Reboot.
3. Install the new system app from the Market.
Dude,
Did you not read the OP? He's having trouble uninstalling with Root Explorer... how does telling him to uninstall with Root Explorer help?

Dude,
I read the op. I also read the followup where he figured out he had to remount in rw mode. I was attempting to offer the procedure that works 100% of the time for upgrading system apps.
Fair enough...

Would really appreciate some help.
Removed some bloatware via Titanium Backup, and of course, I got trigger happy.
process com.motorola.contacts (Contacts force closes)
process com.motorola.conversations (text messaging force closes)
So I have Root Explorer and got a hold of a system dump for Bionic.
I started by moving YahooContacts.apk (one of the apps I guess I shouldn't have uninstalled) back to the /system/app folder...but it doesn't show up anywhere as an installed app (just that the .apk was moved). If I try to actually select the .apk and try to install it says "Application did not Install" but the .apk IS moved.
Processes still don't work after moving.
I would appreciate any help, at this point I can't text or place calls. Thanks in advance, this forum helped me with the entire root process.
You cannot freeze/remove ANY of the other authenticator apps, it will cause contacts to freeze. I ran into that on the Droid 3.
First off there is no need to delete/remove, Freezing them accomplishes the same thing but most importantly it allows you to reverse what you have broken by Defrosting it. Do yourself a favor stop deleting and start freezing. If 16GB is not enough internal storage for you then you might consider an external HD from Seagate!!!!!!! LOL
I realize I made a big mistake. That's totally on me But it's in the past
Do I have any options to get this working again? I am definitely going to freeze apps in the future.
If I did delete an authenticator process, is there any way I can get those back? Would they be available through a system dump?
I believe that you need to make sure the permissions are correct after reinstalling an apk to the system/app folder. I've never done this, so I'll let you do the research. I've heard you can use root explorer to do this or a script with terminal emulator. Sorry I can't help more
I have the exact same problem, and am attempting to troubleshoot this issue on a different forum, however I am not allowed to post links but I'll try and keep you updated.
Edit: It's not a problem with permissions, I've made sure that they're correct with root explorer. It seems to be a Bionic-specific issue. I might just return it at this rate.
Thankfully, there's an unroot to use. I think im in the same boat. re-added all the yahoo related .apk and .odex and set permissions/owner, still nothing. Unroot and hope the Verizon dude is in a good mood!
Except now ADB is throwing "ERROR: ADB could not be granted root access" when trying to unroot
excellent.
Someone in the thread I was talking about had some success, its on droidforums dot net, droid bionic forum, bionic support, HELP! accidentally deleted IMSCServer from Droid Bionic thread. Maybe you can try something I haven't.
just do a factory reset thats what i had to do as I had the same problem.
I tried that, it didn't work... Did you actually get your system apps back? Did you do it through settings or the recovery menu?
i froze my bloat thats prob the difference and it was yahoo that caused the problem for me...

It really begs the question why anything with Yahoo is required by the system. Furthermore, why did they make it so frustratingly hard to reinstall system apps on the Bionic? Really disappointed in Motorola for this.
Here is the fix for Contacts, restore these files and set correct permission, reboot and presto Contacts fixed
That did it.. I have been looking for the YAHOO Contacts.apk file for 3 days with a bloody wortheless phone that I spent 300 shells on!
BTW I agree with Glimmerman, WHY DID YAHOO get involved in contacts? Talk about a sneaky way in integrate them.

Sorry if I'm newbtastic here but what do I do with these APKs and odex. I tried installing with ES explorer but it would not install. Am I supposed to move these files somewheres? /system/app then try install ? Thanks
answered my own question. I WAS newbtastic afterall. LOL. Thanks anyways. This did it. Dang Yahoo!
lol yep my girlfriend did this yesterday fortunately i have a bionic too so i just pulled the files from my phone and pushed to hers.
damn you yahoo.
also, apparently go contacts EX will 'fix' the problem (you must use their app however)

Wait - WHERE are we putting the Contact fix and do we extract it once we've moved it?

I'm confused as to where to put this. I downloaded it and it downloaded into tapatalk downloads. Where do I move it and do I extract it?
I Flashed the JVZ+MOD.zip theme , and it didnt make any difference except for the fact that i have this stupid app now (Sconcau team), i cant delete it. I've tried in titanium where it restarts twice but on recovery it fails with E: failed to mount /dbdata then aborts the installation. and i have tired deleting the apk with super task manager but still no success.
i know its trivial , its just annoying me. i am currently using JVZ deodex/ext4 with Semaphore 2.1.1
Have you already tried to look in /system/app with root explorer or super manager?
yeah thats where the apk files are... its got [sys] next to it , so is there any other way other than titanium ?

Listen to what Coomb just told you. Have you got root explorer? If so you can delete any system apk.
Is it just the sconcau forum application you're trying to remove??
You should really be asking this question in the rom thread instead of posting here. I suggest you freeze app with titanium instead of deleting, until you know for sure what the app does. If your phone knackers when you freeze it, you know it's not safe to remove.
i get that , but isnt super manager the same as root explorer ??? thats why in the original post i said i've tried two ways ...
i'll try with root explorer,

Man you said you've tried with super task manager
for what I know that could just be a task manager, not a file manager o_o
Anyway you should try looking into /system/app as already stated, press the R/W button in the upper right corner and delete the .apk, if you know what you're doing of course. Cheers
hello, i now have my phone rooted thanks to the all in one tool kit...everything seemed to go fine. the main reason for me rooting my phone is to try to remove bloatware and to change wifi scan interval etc...i used to know how to do all this stuff when i had the droids a year or so ago, but have forgotten how to do this. can anyone help or point me in the right direction of a thread/s that could help me with all of this..thanks
It just so happens that this website has a search function...

For WiFi, you will need a root explorer app (I use es file explorer cause its free)
Navigate to /system and open up the build.prop as text...
Look for WiFi intereval scan and edit to your liking
For deleting bloat I suggest using titanium backup, create a full system back up (that way in case you uninstall he wron app you won't have to do a total flash...) Then uninstall the bloat through titanium backup or a root explorer...system apps are located in /system/apps/

Hi all, i have rooted, locke BL xperia Z and i have some issue with it.
first is with my sdcard, walkman still recgonize mp3 file in it, "super bankup" app still can backup my contact and sms to sdcard, but when i use Titanium backup or/ ES file manager, it cant recgonize sdcard or backup app to sdcard. With root explore i see the director of sdcard is "storage/sdcard1/.." and have one "/storage/sdcard0/.." (is it internal? ) with this issue i can not backup app to use after flash new ROM.
And another problem, in ROOT explore, each time i press the "mount R/O", is crash and reboot immediatly
So can anybody help my to fix? Thank in advace :fingers-crossed:

i have Superuser which work fine with Titanium. and with Astro file manager now i can manage file in sdcard - which have director: "storage/sdcard1"
So the only one problem left is i can not use Root explore, can sbd help? :crying:
I had a problem like that and I solved it by using super su instead of superuser and of that doesn't work re root your phone using the new bin4ry rooting method.
Press thanks if I have helped

Some apps I've found I had to browse to the external SD card by going mnt/sdcard/external_sd. I don't have my phone on me (getting repaired) so I can't check, but I found it pretty confusing. I had to actually go to my PC and browse to make sure it was actually pointing to the right spot.
