Keep or Cancel my pre-order - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says!
Ordered a Z1 a wee while ago, and now, after having read some reviews am considering cancelling it - Are the reviews a load of cobblers, what do folks think.
Negatives (from reviews)
- Poor battery life
- Camera that fails to live up to expectations, over zealous post processing leading to poor, over compressed images
- Scratches very easily - does it even have Corning Gorilla Glass front/back?
- Nasty Sony UI overlay (not to bothered about this, I'll choose my own shell)
- Massive bezel compared to competition
- Bezel raised at edges meaning front surface not flat, difficult to clean + a dust magnet
- Rear glass is a finderprint magnet
- Screen issues - not good in bright sunshine (worse than AMOLED), viewing angles not great (image washed out at an angle)
Positives (from reviews):
- Good build quality
- Waterproof
- dedicated camera button
- performs well in low light
- Bundled with geeky smartwatch
- powerful processor
- Takes a micro SD
- Speaker seems half decent
If I do cancel then a Galaxy S4 is the other option. Ruled out LG G2 due to no micro SD card slot, ruled out HTC One for no SD card slot, and low megapixel camera (I like to have an image that's big enough for cropping).

I change my s4 for z1, i think only screen and weight os better in s4, but touchwiz in very bad and cyanogem for my octa never be good much bugs.

I have seen sample which were beautiful. About the fingerprint magnet and bezel. You should have known about this design before preordering. Not a negative at all. It called design preference. And there's no issue with the screen. It's definitely make brighter than AMOLED.
You must be reading too much CNET. I suggest you read the preview from GSMArena. Much more fair and balanced.

Z1 very good

Actually, the above was a summary of what I had read from MANY review sites - and yes, CNET was one of them, and the most negative, but if it aint apple they don't like it anyway!!
I like the look of the design, fingerprint magnet can be fixed by adding a case, but the device is already pretty bulky.
I'm just not sure why they went for glass front/back when other manufacturers have moved away from it. The back on the zperia Z tablet looks just as classy as glass IMHO, and the HTC one is way more classy, esp in black, and that has an alu back.
HTC One best fits my design language, but does not fit my need for a decent megapix camera and an SD card slot. At the moment, Z1 comes the closest to delivering all my wants, and Samsung S4 second, but I don't like £450 plasticated phones! Like all devices, one weighs up the pro's and con's and buys the one that ticks the most boxes.
I'm told that mine wont be delivered until 1st Oct (due to the accompanying watch being delayed). I will have a chance to play with one in a shop before then.
Nigel

cancel the preorder, go play with the device once it hits the store and then decide. Reviews are just for reference, and every one preference differs. I did not pre order as i want to see the device once and play with it for sometime, and see. I want to do the same with G2 and then will decided between one of the two. S4 has an old proc i would rather suggest Note 3 to you.

Battery life is ok
camera is good... use manual settings for better shots
Sony ui is simplistic.. and you can get replacement home screen from playstore
The retail unit has god display so do not worry there.
other issue can be minimised by using a good front and rear screen protector..

Really not a fan of screen protectors - always end up with at least one lump of dust under the screen - make it look naff! Current phone is a Galaxy Note 1 (almost 2 years old). Never had a screen protector, in daily use on my commute, and screen is perfect. I expect the Xperia Z1's screen to be no less durable than this. If I am going to have to cover this up to protect it from scratches then gone is its beauty - and I might as well have bought an S4 and stuck that in a TPU case!
Nova is my favoured UI. I use it on my Galaxy Note 8. Owning the Note8 is why I am not in the market for a note 3. The 8" screen on the note 8 makes the stylus far more useful than it is on my Note 1.

Seems like you don't underdstand the fact that Sony installs a shutter protector with Sony logo imprinted on their screens. It is not the screen that scratches but the protector.
Additionally Sony will not replace the shutter protector as they treat is as partbof the screen. It is much easier to apply an extra protector for 2 eur on top and change it when you need. You can remove the shutter protector (you will loose sony logo on the front) and have just glass which will be much more scratch resistant.
The back has also got an antiglare layer on glass so it is the one that shows scratches.
Being an Xperia Z owner I would highly advise using a screen protector but it is up to you. I have found that the protector does not impair phone functionality in any way and if you have difficulty with application just buy a few until you get it right or get one applied in a phone shop.

I preordered mine and laid down 20% non-refundable deposit, so I can't cancel my order. But if I were you, I'd get Note3 or wait out for Z2. I wouldn't get S4, it's too "old".

I will try to answer this one by one:

None of the reviewers has a production set yet so there is no basis to this at all. reviewers need at least 1-2 weeks of using the handset daily before they can really tell the difference.

Again, no one has the final production firmware yet to test this properly. so it is hard to conclude camera. but so far from all the reviews I saw, low light pictures are amazing.

Screen protectors fix this, and if possible dont install it yourself, get one from a store and let them install. it will cost a few dollars more but it is worth it. I have been using screen protectors on my xperia S for more than 1 year and I barely notice that it is there.

I disagree, sony UI is the fastest, most elegant and simplistic non-nexus phone out there. if you have tried an LG or Samsung phone you will know what I am saying. if there is a criticism, it is that the UI has too few enhancements.

This one is something you have to try yourself. most of the time, when you have placed the phone in your hand, it changes your opinion right away. most of the reviews I have read, watched are saying that Z1 is one of the most premium feeling and comfortable for a flagship android phone there is.
compare this with LG G2's plastic back, with back buttons (barf), and Note3's "Leather back (really is plastic)" back panel.

This is not true at all, Xperia Z1 Screen is the brightest of all. trust me it is bright! and nothing is worse than AMOLED.
Also IMO, who uses their phones at weird viewing angles? but if being used dead on, Xperia Z1 is the best. specially at watching movies.

Another thing, Samsung's Amoled display deteriorate in time. it will deteriorate by almost 10% within 1 year.
I compared my friend's 1 year old Note 2 to 1.5 year old my Xperia S, clearly shows the difference.

TS, you should Read this post by shem2409. ALL sony xperia handsets came with the shatterproof sheet. It is safer for human when the shatter proof sheet is applied. When glass breaks or shatters, there will be lots and lots of small tiny shards coming off. The shatter proof sheet is to hold the shards together so that you won't hurt yourself.
Just apply a good quality screen protector and you will be fine. Or you can go to a shop, buy screen protector from them and they would apply for you. They have experience on apply screen protector and most of the time, they applied it perfectly for me.

The screen is ok on the Z1. Screen protector will protect it further. Viewing angles are fine on the Z1.
The only valid point is camera quality. At present the S4 which has had 6 months to be optimised takes better quality shots. But it doesnt have the 800 chip that can do more camera tricks like the Z1. Also the S4 has 9gb free internal. The Z1 11.7gb approx.

I currently have the S4 and I am in love with it. The only flaw to me is I wish the speaker was on the bottom so it wouldn't matter how I put the phone down and also the camera. The camera is good but not for low-light photography. I am upgrading to the Z1. Also, I would prefer people to save their comments on the Z1's camera until they actually see it in person. In an honest sense, I hardly see anything wrong with the Z1 besides the large bezel at the bottom (most likely due to the hardware design) and the lack of OIS.

Keep that in mind, my octa have only 8.79 gb for use and I stop more than 50 apps with titanium backup. Is really good device but touchwiz is bad, i give a try with Sony now.

These phones are fingerprint magnets but as other OP's have stated, a back shield isn't noticeable at all. I always cover my phones with skins from Phantomskinz including my XZ. I found a glass oleophobic screen protector from Brando for my XZ and loved it. Am (im)patiently waiting for them to get one for the XZ1! Feels much better to the touch than the regular screen protectors.

I totally disagree! The Z1 samples I've seen so far reflect its overall image quality to be much better in comparison to S4 or any other android smartphone so far. Have a look at the gsmarena Z1 camera samples (20 mp ones) & compare them to S4's, you'll know what I mean. I do agree that the image processing on Z1 could be better (which hopefully should only improve with retail firmware & further updates). But the Z1 sensor captures way too much detail compared to S4 to be called of inferior quality ! Low light imaging too seems a lot better.
On a side note, I noticed that the gsmarena Z1 review camera samples show blurring out of images ONLY on the right side (about 1/3 part), which might probably be due to dirty lens or defective unit.

Hi
Well, I did cancel my order. I shall wait for some real user reviews of retail units before deciding whether to get one. I note that several UK vendors have had it listed as 'in stock' from today so those real user opinions are not far off.
Might just keep my Note One for anither 6 months and wait for the Z2!

Yet another Nexus 7 Review

I've had my Nexus 7 for a couple of weeks now. I absolutely love it, but the omissions made to keep the cost down are significant.
Find out what I thought here at
http://brobuffet.com/2012/09/19/review-google-nexus-7-2/
Short and Sweet, well covered :good:
Good short review . I enjoyed reading it.

Very well written. However there are some "factual" errors.
The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, meaning this panel is scratch resistant, but not finger print resistant unfortunately.

Actually this can be somewhat confusing, as it certainly is not the older "soda lime" glass technologies of yore. It is Corning FIT Glass, which is a newer trade marked glass and method of constructing displays (this is the new Corning "one glass solution" )
Here's a great PDF document link that explains the new FIT pretty well http://www.globalcommhost.com/corning/CDTContent/assets/2011FINETECH_Tompkins.pdf
To quote the document,
Pros: Lightest & thinnest, simple supply chain, Optical performance
Cons: Weaker edge-strength (why the screen lift could make this a fragile Nexus 7 display, granted this is greatly reduced now as you said in your review), Cutting & machining difficulty, Limited know-how
You'll find that FIT is based on their IOX-FS glass and when you compare to the Scratch load and surface failure graph, it's very close to Gorilla Glass. It also looks like while it has less of a scratch load resistance (250g versus 300g) it has better surface stress resistance at 600MPa versus 500MPa of Gorilla.
So perhaps it's only a quibble as it's the nearest thing to Gorilla Glass without sacrificing the benefit of having the display technology much thinner for a much better viewing result.
I'm very surprised Google isn't crowing about this technology, as it's superior to the Gorilla Glass tech the Amazon Kindle Fire HD for the ability to provide a better purity of display. I suspect two factors. One, the display technologies superiority is hampered by the "lousy" display calibration (don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, but it could be stellar without any hardware replacement if Google fixed the calibration). The second is mastering the QA of the edge of the display and the surrounding bezel.
You'll note in the document that Corning states that the need for a very durable display in tablets and handhelds (phones) requires that a bezel or other protective edge technology be used.
You get a great example of this with the Nexus 7 torture test on YouTube. You see it dropped on purpose once and while it's back pops off, it continues to run and the display looks just fine. The second drop and the display breaks.
I suspect the test unit may have been one with the screen lift problem (lower left corner edge) and the second drop hit that causing the screen failure. It would be interesting to have the torture test performed with a newer batch of C90's or later to see the results. I'm not volunteering though
I really had a great time this week. I'm close the the Seattle Amazon head quarters, so when I'm taking public transportation and checking my Google Maps while not having Wi-Fi connectivity. They are amazed that the ability to have maps "offline" and the GPS/Compass working so stellar. It's also really funny when I show my iPhone 4s and how the turn-by-turn navigation with my Nexus 7 "offline" is greater than the Apple Maps from iOS 6 (really regretting the OS upgrade at the moment).
In summary, great review, you did a good job and it's easy to understand the confusion over it being Gorilla Glass or not.
Nice review. I have to agree, the N7 does not feel cheap in the hand at all.

[Xperia T] Terrible build quality

I decided to change my aging Galaxy S II because its dev community becane stagnant (no kernel sources, tons of kangs). The XT sounded perfect on paper : 720p screen, 13mp camera, Krait chipset, good sound quality and some great devs migrated to it. However after a week of use I can't help but feel a bitter taste in my mouth for buying it sight unseen (this phone is very hard to get in my country). Here is my little "rant", structured in in bullet points:
1) The screen acquired TONS of microscratches in just a week. I knew sony doesn't use gorilla glass, but this is terrible. I can't even pull it out of my pocket w/o fearing that it will scratch . I am very careful with my phone (my S2 was in pristine condition after two months of use with no screen protectors/cases), so I doubt it's me. Also, the screen itself is pretty bad, but I won't complain too much about it since I read about this in reviews and various topics around here.
2) The case paint already started peeling. Not much, but at this rate it will look like it's 2 years old in just a month. Such a shame since I love the finish.
Another point of concern is the audio quality. It has a discernible hiss no matter what headphones or music app I use. It's even worse on CM10 and since I got this phone mostly for the dev community this just sucks donkey balls. Every respectable reviewer complained about the SQ of the S2 and its background noise caused by the CPU/radios and none about the XT and yet it is easier to notice on the XT.
What is your opinion about this? I've seen that some topics already covered some of these issues, but I think they need to be brought again to the attention of potential buyers.
LE: It seems that my headphone jack port is also very flimsy. It falls off every time I try to put on / take off my case.
Strange... My XT seems very robust, difficult to scratch and the ruberish coating seems perfect. Perhaps you should contact Sony and request a replacement. Check the booklets that came with it perhaps?

1) There is a shatter proof sheet applied on it. So the micro scratches is technically on that, not on the screen itself. Peel that off and apply a new screen protector.
2) Is a known issue for LT30p? I havent seen anyone posting issues with LT30at or LT30a atm.

It's a very, very thick screen protector. It comes off but it takes some work. Trying to peel it off at the corners using a piece of paper seems to work best for most people, but you'll just have to spend some time on it if you really want to get it off
You should leave it on though, unless those microscratches really bother you.
On sound quality: it's perfectly fine for me and I use audiophile earbuds (these: https://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-MDR7550/). It lacks a tiny bit of stereo separation and clarity, but not worse than any other phone at all.
I thought it's something like this one, but preapplied since it didn't come in the box. Any tutorials on how to do it? I already ordered a 3M screen protector which should be much harder to scratch.

In contrast to you, I am not discouraging anyone to buy it.
Well, I am using Xperia V (LT25i) and perhaps it has different build quality since it has to withstand dirt and water? It has a metal frame (looks like atleast) and rubber on the backside. It also came with an extra screen protector in the box. I know you don't care about Xperia V but maybe somebody reading this wants to know? Only downside are all these flipp flop USB-, charger and headphone openings that has to be sealed after use.
In regard to music player, PowerAmp is a must for best sound! :good:
Hope you don't feel too bad about the Xperia T and Happy New Year!

I had mine since December 3rd with lots of time to test and use it. Maybe you got a faulty device, it happend to me before and I made DOA. Got a new phone in the shop next day.
Xperia V Walkman is good too, don't know if it is the same version as Xperia T.
Conclusion of Xperia V (if someone wants to know).
*No scratch on the display (one extra sheet in the box).
*Feels good in hand and sturdy built quality, no squeaky parts.
*Music and sound is fine, but if I want louder volume -I buy PowerAmp.
If it gets dirty-, too hot or scratched, just wash it with cold water.
My XT is perfect for me, I havn't any problem on screen or anything.
Sony Xperia T - Stock ROM - Firmware 7.0.3.195 - 4.1.2 Stock Leaked Launcher - Rooted soon.
Xperia V is also good and maybe more, but I like my phone !

Well, it isn't the performance that bothers me. Actually, the performance is great. And finally having CM10 with working project butter features is like a godsend. I'm just worried about the outer casing.
Ive had my XT since it came out in UK, its great but the only problem I have is the build quality, I don't have the flaking issue, but more the phone creaking, its quite a annoying sound. I have a case but I only have it on when I go out.
Apart from that its awesome phone

I've also got the creaking issue. Also removed the rather thick shatter protector that has improved screen responsiveness and contract, slightly...
Would be interested in the Xperia Z though, if the price is right i'd exchange.
had my xperia t since october3rd not one scratch looks like new guess i take better care of mine that anyone else
Had mine since the 26th October. It's on O2 UK with the Bond branding.
Build quality is excellent thus far. No peeling. Screen has pre-applied protector, plus the one that came in the box. Very happy with it. Previous phone was an iPhone 3GS and had the original iPhone before that.
Android seems to have acquired 'polish' since I last tried it about a year ago.
My T seem perfect until now (buyed 12/12/12)
The only problem si the poor wifi range.. it's too low compared to my previous LG optimus black.

No problems here so far...

[Q] Z1 a good buy?

Hi,
So ive tried all the websites like gsmarena etc but i wanted a view user opinions as well.
How is the camera? Is it better than HTC E8, HTC M7 and Samsung Galaxy S4?
Are there any phones better than this in the same price range?
Any issues i should know about?
Finally, should i buy this phone? Its more or less the max i can afford atm.
Any help would be appreciated thanks

it seems that you're looking at mid-high range phones.
imo, z1 screen isn't as good as its competitors, like you can notice the screen getting washed out with only a slight change in your viewing angle.
Camera is... so-so, video recording is amazing on the galaxy s5. Photos are decent I guess.
Build quality is amazing though and looks sexy. Also waterproof is a big bonus.
Software wise it's probably better than the S4, I hate Touchwiz before the S5 (laggy)
Battery life is quite average
Lol. Mid high range.

I see. Thank you. Any recommendations, if not Z1?
YES!
I would recommend to buy Z1
Camera is really good. Much more better than Galaxy S4, S5, HTC M8, iPhone 5 and 5S
I have compared these models myself and Z1 is the best

It is because display colors are calibrated irregularly
Xperia Z1 has one of the best displays
Go to settings > display > white balance and change colors to
Red 5
Green 5
Blue 117

Yeah I agree with regard to color reproduction, but there's nothing that can be done to fix a bad viewing angles other than getting a better screen.
@OP, I would rather get the z1c or Z3c for its battery life and compact-ness if it's in your price range
I recently got one over my Nexus 4 and can definitly recommend it.
What I don't like:
- The screen has a little border, especially top/bottom. But that is in all phones, the speaker/mic and front camera need some space.
- The stock screen protector. While it adds an extra layer of protection it also easily scratches. Warranty seems to be ok when replacing it, but you better get that confirmed.
- Some crappy preinstalled apps. But then again, that is even worse with other phones.
- The "big" internal speaker is a little quiet when listening to music because it needs to be waterproof.
What I like:
- Good prices and basically still the same hardware as in the newest phones released just recently.
- Battery life. At least comparing to a Galaxy S4 I can easily beat it with Stamina Mode. No comparison to Nexus 4.
- Design. It looks and feels very high quality.
- Waterproof. No need to say more.
- Officially unlockable bootloader. No need for hacks, just get a code from the Sony website and it's unlocked.
- Best of all: Only slightly modified Android. No crazy stuff that makes it complicated or laggy, and it looks pretty neat.
I appreciate your help guys, thanks a million
Put it this way...
Dropped my Z1 while the flip case was OPEN... from the top of a scaffold. About 12 feet in the air.
Scratched one of the port covers but it didn`t break. Works perfectly. Very high quality.
My wife also dropped hers down stairs about a week ago. Not a scratch. Not in a case.
These phones are built to last (excluding the port covers... the seals come loose after a while)
Buy it lad!

[Q] Would you guys recommend buying the LG G Flex?

Hi,
I'm looking for a new device, as my Note 1 looks like it's about to join the big charger in the sky.
I know the basics - large screen, good battery & processor, meh resolution etc. Judging form the specs and reviews I've read, it looks like a good fit for me.
What I'd like to know is if you'd recommend buying it for long term use (I'm not one to change phones every year), and if there are issues with the phone you think I should know about.
It's a great phablet. Fast, comfortable and bug free. Battery seems to last forerver. Feels solid yet slippery in the hand, and close to impossible to use one handed. You won't feel the difference made by the 720p resolution after a few hours. Color reproduction is great and the screen is sharp and bright.
Coming from the note 2, i see only 3 downsides In the flex.
1. The camera. Real slow to focus indoors, produces lots of noise in dark areas... Sometimes i cant determine where the focus point is. Perfect daylight and closeups though.
2. Lack of development. This phone is locked down tight, so if you love to flash like me, it's a disappointment.
3. No cases, no glass screen protectors. Almost. You can still find them around ebay and amazon, but not as much stuff a samsung would have.
On the bottom line this is a great mid-high range phone, and for the right price, and the right mind it will do.

Thanks!
I don't really care about the camera. The lack of development is a bummer. Might have been a deal breaker for me if it wasn't for Xposed.
Oh, one more thing - some users had an issue with ghosting or after images on the screen. Anyone had this problem? How widespread is it?

It really is a matter of luck... Some of the phones were bad from factory.. You have something like that, you'll get it replaced with your warrenty.
If you want to keep it long term and lack of updates (and also latest apps) will bug you then I suggest Nexus 6 over it. My dad has this phone and I have the nexus, dont get me wrong g flex is a nice phone but starting to fall back in technology and will likely not get updates for 2+ years

Question Blue hue shift on screen

I got my phone yesterday and started noticing specially in white background a slight blue hue when tilting the phone or even by looking straight at it, I can see it at the top and bottom of the screen if looking straight.
My ocd is always kicking in and I can't unsee it.
I've tried different color modes but it's still there.
Am I the only one ? I searched a bit and it seems "normal" in amoled screens but how could it be normal, I've never had phones with amoled but always heard it's the superior screen but to me it's not looking good.
I'm happy with the phone as I couldn't stand anymore my old trusty honor 9 with it's old battery with 3h sot and frequently laggy and outdated software but I must say the honor 9 feels and looks premium where this feels meh. the plastic frame even has some very small dents from manufacturer.
The worst thing is I paid 340€ for the honor when it came out and this for 450€ should be equal or even better in everything.

It's the screen protector.

Really ?
I was thinking of buying a glass protector for it but can't find any.
What I noticed is that the Neo 2 looks exactly the same as the GT 2, even the camera layout.
I'm tempted to buy the ibywind version, looks like the most complete with the frame aligment.

I've been looking on ebay and most listings for cases have Neo 2 / GT 2 in them. Screen size is the same and camera placement looks similiar. If it has GT 2 in the listing and doesn't fit then you should get a full refund at lesat as you can say item not as described

Do you have the same issue with the screen ?
I was going to buy the ibywind glass today as it looks it's the only one with the hole for the selfie cam so it should be the better one I guess. All the other chinese random name brands don't have it for some reason.
I also noticed some of them listing gt neo 2/gt 2 compatible.
But there's some people complaining about the fingerprint sensor not working properly after so I'm holding the buy for now. Hopefully in the upcoming weeks more products and reviews come out.
Looks like this GT series was a fail. Barely any videos, reviews, accessories. The lack of posts in this forum tells the same.
Realme should sell glass protection for their phones as they show a warning about using only approved realme screen protectors but where are they ?

I keep my phone on dark mode most of time and force dark mods where possible, I haven't noticed any issues but then I cannot see any issue with the pictures you posted either so maybe my eyesight is weaker.
I saw that but setting up fingerprint again after new protector should get rid of issues.
I myself am going to wait a little while and just use case + cover supplied until there is supplier based in my country so I don't have to import from china
