[Q] what exactly is going on? phone not turning on - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Hello everyone,
So I am new to XDA forums and I have a few questions about the HTC Vivid. I just recently purchased a phone for cheap just to practice doing how to root and do certain task on phones. When I purchased the phone I knew that the phone was not working properly. When I tried to turn on the phone nothing happen but I saw that the screen did light up in a black screen. I took the battery out and checked the battery and the connection to the battery on the phone everything seems fined. When I put the battery back in and tried to turn it on nothing happened. Think it might just be a dead battery I charged it all night. While changing I noticed the phone led light was not constant it kept blinking and a screen showed up real quick and it looked like it booted into recovery real quick and shut off. It kept doing this by itself for a while. (Cycling) Then it finally booted into the white boot screen with the HTC Logo. I thought the phone was finally going to work but nothing happened it continued the cycling process again for a while. Thinking there was a possibility of fixing the phone I connected it with my PC and using both Windows and Linux. When I connected it with Linux (Ubuntu) nothing seems to happen. When I connected it with Windows it does the same thing as if i charged it. The orange led light blinks a couple times and then becomes solid for a bit and blinks again life it was Morse code. This time I see a black screen lighting up more and boots fewer times booting into recovery. I think it booting into recovery because I remember the CWM. Through all this process while connected with my computer I see that it is attempting to connect with my computer but then shut off. After approximately 8-10 minutes of cycling i get the white screen with the HTC logo again and then the cycle happens again.
My question is what is the problem with the phone? A few things that pop into my mind is probably just the battery is fried, the microusb is bad, or something went wrong during the process of flashing something onto the phone. I was very detailed about the problem and what I noticed because like I said I purchased this phone only to learn how to root and do other various things on a phone. Is the phone salvageable? I will post a video later if my detailed description didn't make sense or you just have to see it happening.

OK, first thing to do is to charge the battery in an external charger. That is the *only* way to eliminate the battery as a problem. If the phone wont boot with a fully charged battery, see if it will boot into recovery mode. If you can't do that, it is quite possibly dead.

What did I do wrong???

My Kaiser was signalling low battery when I went out yesterday, so when I got back home I hooked it up to my laptop for a trickle charge. Yellow light glowing all was well.
This morning I was having coffee and I heard my phone buzz every minute or so. Went over and saw that the boot screen was up. Unhooked it and it turned off. It would not turn on or boot up.
Hooked up the USB cable and now the light is red instead of yellow. I assume that means my battery is deader than a doornail.
So....what is it that I did wrong? Why is it dead? Got my new battery coming tomorrow.
Click the image in my signature. Use the search term "RLOD" or "red light of death".
Well instead of trying to work juju on my phone, I took several simple steps.
First I put my SIM into my backup phone and found that it would not turn on. Went to my friendly AT&T person and she said my SIM was cooked. She cut me a new one and that phone turned on. Put my memory card into the backup phone and it recognized it. No problem there.
Got a backup battery and put it in the phone and voila, it is charging with a yellow light instead of a red one.
Once it boots up I'll switch the SIM but I expect I'll not have a problem.
Guess it's the last time I leave my phone on USB all night.

Tytn II possibly dead HELP!!!

It looks like my Tytn II might be bricked... I have searched and searched and can not find any info on this. The phone will not turn on. I know the battery is dead, but it should have the power to try to boot. In fact, I have not used it in a while and I just tryed to boot it, it got to the starting screen, then the windows loading screen, and then I walked away for a few minutes and came back it and it was a black screen. Tried to turn on again and it did not power up. Upon plugging it into the charger, I get a solid red light on the top. When I remove the battery from the phone as the charger is connected the LED immediately changes to solid orange, and the blue led next to it comes on as well. When I disconnect the charger all the LEDs go off (obviously because theres no battery) and when i put the battery back in the phone i get a dim red light.
is the phone bricked? im thinking it might have slight water damage but it has been like 2 weeks since then so it should have dryed up i assume. tried to reset a few times with the little reset button next to the charger port, nothing. is it possible the battery may just be done for? any help or suggestions would be great. thanks.
I had that isue but i just leaved the phone on charger and everything came back to normal It's still working very well. But, i cant remember how i get into that situation but i surely know that i saw red light on top .
thanks, now that its been on the charger for a while i now get an orange LED. i will let it charge for a while and see if it awakens after almost 3 weeks of utter deadness.
Try waking it while on charge itslef.

just tried and it got to the very first boot screen and then went black and the orange and blue LEDs stayed on. tried to reset, no luck. unplugged charger, still LEDs stayed on. so then I took the battery out, all LEDs went out, plugged it back in and now i get the same red LED again.
update: now i get a orange LED as its plugged into the charger, but when i try to turn it on it gives the first boot screen for like 3 or 4 seconds then turns off...
I am getting exactly the same problem?
I tried to install android - got it working, came on a few times - then just totally died - It showt he HTC boot logo, but then just turns off.
Does anyone have any ideas.
does your computer see it when plugged in via usb?
perhaps this will help? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358136
oh and also you have tried to enter the bootloader mode right?
I've had this issue, millions of times. What I do when I have problems like this (and problems like when I turn it on, it says the battery is low when it isnt, and when you connect your charger/USB, it dies on you)
Try removing and putting the battery back on.
so in simple words
charge the battery first (dont bother trying to turn it on)
and then remove the charger (this plays a big role)
take out the battery, put it back in, hope it works.
The same thing just happened to me, I thought it was toast. I would get the red light when I plugged into the charger, and after a few minutes it would turn to orange. I tried to turn it on then, and it would start to boot up, then shut off a few seconds later. This happened a few times. I just left it plugged in overnight, and when I woke up it was on! Only problem I've noticed is the orange LED is always on, but I can live with that

[Q] HTC Vivid won't charge or turn on

As the title says, my HTC Vivid won't turn on, charge or anything. The orange light that says it's charging doesn't turn on, buttons don't vibrate or anything. It shouldn't be bricked because I haven't done anything to brick it. I was using Xbox Smartglass on it, I locked the phone and went back to my game, about 15 minutes later I tried to unlock it and it did nothing. The battery shouldn't have been dead because I charged it the night before. Any suggestions or help please?

I haven't done any modding to it, and I have no clue what twrp and CWM are, sorry. I'm new here.

LOL The reason I got a Vivid is because he gave it to me. Sadly, I was hoping there would be a technical solution instead of trying a new battery. I've got one ordered though. :/
Some have bad batteries.
Mine started doing the same thing. For a while I thought the battery life on Vivid was horrible compared to the Aria I had at the time. Then it progressed and one day finally quit completely and would not take a charge from any charger I had. So, being a techhead I decided to probe the battery with a multimeter and it showed very little voltage, so low I guess the charger wouldn't even recognize or try to charge it.
So what I did was take a battery charger I had for a walkie talkie radio and touched the leads to the battery for 3-5 seconds or so, put battery back in phone and it would then charge. I did this a few times until I could get to ATT store and the guy ordered a new one through warranty. Haven't had a problem with the Vivid since.
Same Problem
Last night I pulled my battery at 21% after shutting the phone off to clear the memory. I put the battery back in and put it on the charger, I tried to turn the phone on and nothing. It is not showing that it is charging. I have four batteries for this phone and none of them will turn on the phone. I am at a loss here. The phone was working fine until i shut it down and removed the battery. Any ideas on what is causing this or any way to force it to turn on.

That sounds like a royal pain.
Could it be the changer or its USB cable? Work some contact cleaner into the power button?
I'm having this same issue. I'm not sure if it's the battery, since the phone boots to bootloader just fine. But the battery won't charge when the phone is off (red light comes on for a second, then quits) and I can't get past the HTC screen booting to ROM or recovery. Where is a good place to buy a battery?
Even if the power button was bad the phone should still charge a battery. I have a charger that will charge the batteries without the phone so I know the batteries are charged. I have several different chargers and none of them will show the phone charging. I even tried connecting it to my computer. The phone is dead, I guess I am going to have to crack it open and see if anything has come loose inside. I really like this phone and am going to hate loosing it. I paid a lot for this phone. That shinny penny I paid to get this phone was my favorite.
Have you tried plugging the phone USB into a desktop and using that to try rebooting the phone into bootloader or recovery?
Hasoon2000's Vivid All-In-One Toolkit in the dev section can do that pretty simply. i used an earlier version of that to unlock the phone a year and a half ago.
i don't remember if the phone has to have debugging turned on for the desktop to feed it commands.
Even if this works i dunno whatall it'll prove.
i like this phone too a lot, and am sorry yours seem to be having hardware problems.

That sounds like you lost your boot image... try flashing a new one that you know works... and if it won't charge with power off... sounds like you have CWM installed... switch to twrp...

The phone does not turn on at all so getting to the bootloader is impossible. It does nothing. Does not even charge a battery. .

That's the definition of a bricked phone, was what i meant. No screen, no led, no button function, no sign of life, and from no explicable cause.
Android phones don't have real on-off switches that directly disconnects the phone from power. Its failure to manifest signs of life doesn't absolutely indicate irreversible hardware failure. There's a bit of a chance it's firmware.
Aside from the power button, Android phones can be controlled thru the USB port.
I took your advise and plugged the phone into the computer and left it over night. This morning I rebooted the computer and the phone screen lit up. I got all excited and tried to use adb to reboot into bootloader, Of course the phone was not found. I took the phone off the cord and the screen shut off. I pushed the power button and the screen lit up. Let go of the power button and the screen goes off. I tried another usb cord and now the screen no longer lites up. Maybe there is hope for this phone.
If the screen lights up like that... there is power to it...
Sounds like you have dirt in your power button... or the button isn't making contact...
Time to disassemble and check the power button...

Yeah, that part where the phone was seen by the desktop, and then not, can have something to do with the Windows drivers. Most of the folks on these forums know what's with this stuff better than me; i usually have to tell windows to stop the hardware, disconnect and reconnect the phone USB and start the connection up again, every time before i do one set of commands, like put the phone into bootloader and download a kernel image into it.
There's a Vivid unbricking project over in the dev subforum, you must've seen that. Whether or not you get your phone working again, i hope it'll be a productive journey for you.
i was perfectly happy just messing with apps until i bricked my tablet; that got me into all this device unlocking and rom burning and fun stuff. It's too bad the Vivid isn't simpler to hack.
my phone cant boot to desktop after i flash the kanel
my phone cant boot to desktop after i flash the kanel please can you help me
9 times out of 10, if the phone will not turn on at all it is the battery. For some reason, the Vivid will occasionally stop seeing the battery. I have fixed this on mine when that happened by using an external charger. That worked because my battery was actually OK, the Vivid just wouldn't charge it or even see it. Once it was charged it was fine. If your battery really is dead (sounds like it might be the case), get a new battery. There is a 2000 mHr battery on Amazon that is not too much worse than the original (when new).
I had the same issue once, it turns out that I fixed it using a external charger

[Q] Phone won't turn on

I can't get my phone to turn on (or at least stay on).
Last night I plugged it in before going to bed, just like I always do. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. This morning, however, when I woke up, it was off (even though I had left it on) and I couldn't get it to turn on at all. I didn't have time to examine it much before going off to school so I just took it with me (despite its apparent uselessness) and it never turned on. Now that I'm home I am able to look at it more in depth, but I can't seem to figure out what the problem is.
Every time I plug it in to charge, the LED light comes on for about 2 or 3 seconds, and then turns off again, I'm not sure if that means anything. On two occasions now, I've been able to turn the phone on to the point where it shows the HTC logo, but that lasts for a second or so and then it shuts off again. I haven't been able to get it past that point.
I haven't gone through any changes with the phone as of recently. I haven't even installed any new apps or anything for awhile now. I really don't know what would have triggered this sort of behavior. It just seemed to happen for no reason overnight.
Any ideas and/or help would be much appreciated.

[Q] [HELP] Red flashing LED, won't turn on, after battery change

Hey XDA!
Got a problem with my Xperia Z1. It was working fine before the battery swap, aside from a problem with the battery (failing to hold more than 5% charge), hence the swap.
But after removing the old battery and attaching the new one, the phone will not boot, and when plugged into a wall socket, it flashes the red LED in 1~ second intervals. The pow+volume up combination doesn't result in any changes or "3 vibrations", and it won't enter flashboot mode. When plugged into a Windows PC, it registers it being connected, but when the LED turns off, the "disconnected device" sound plays, and it does this every time the LED comes on then off again.
Worst part is that hooking the old battery up doesn't work either!
I'm fairly certain I'm royally screwed but I cannot see clearly why; I checked the phone and anywhere I touched, and I can't see anything wrong. It could be that I was sent a faulty battery replacement and it broke it, or I installed it slightly incorrectly that resulted in the same thing.
Has anyone got a potential solution or am I well and truly screwed?
Cheers!
