will the z1 be carrier locked in the UK? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Specifically o2. I'm on a three contract but also have an o2 one up for an upgrade. I want to use my three sim in the o2 z1.

If you get it from O2, it probably will be carrier locked!

Handset I have from EE is carrier locked, and bootloader lock alllowed is NO.
Doesn't look to be the end of the world, when a lot of Sony stuff relies on the bootloader being locked. DRM keys and that.

Hey mate, would you be able to do me a bit of a favour? I've pre ordered from Phones4u for EE and Phones4u have been saying that EE haven't approved the device and aren't shipping it etc! Will you be able to put up some proof of where you got it from and you've received it so I can shown to Phones4u? Those sods are delaying orders till next week and giving this excuse! Thanks would be very grateful if you could do something!

Handset is direct from EE.
I ordered over the phone on 5th September.
All that come with the phone is a shipping note.
I am not prepared to post a copy of that on a public forum. The note mentioned that I should have received a DSR letter too, but didn't.

Three UK Bootloader

I'm thinking of pre ordering the Z and I'm just wondering about the bootloader.
I've read mentions of the Three version (which is the LTE version) coming with a locked bootloader. I'm just unsure of the scale of the problem; my previous phones All came locked but that didn't stop some xda genius unlocking it for me. Will non-Three devices just come pre-unlocked, with the Three version just requiring a bit of extra work? Is the Three version even in unlockable? (Bad question to ask before it's even out, sorry)
I'd greatly appreciate if anyone can clarify the above points
My Xperia arc bought 2 years ago has a locked bootloader, I can't answer whether SIM unlocking it will unlock the BL too.

I got it coming on Three UK too. If the bootloader is fully locked then it will be going back, simple as that.

I've put the question forward to them on Twitter but I bet they'll say they don't know.. They should know stuff like this though, no excuses for not knowning.
*Update*
@ThreeUK @ThreeUKSupport Hi guys, could you tell me if the Xperia Z will have a fully locked bootloader with you guys?
@gez_morgan @ThreeUKSupport It will be locked yes <Jo
Then I told them I'll be cancelling my pre-order in that case and they replied with
@gez_morgan Just checking for you. Will keep you posted
@gez_morgan Hi there, yep this will be locked.
Just to clarify,
No Sony phone comes with unlocked boatloader.
It's UNLOCKABLE bootloader which is the key word. All sim free phones are unlockable. i.e. you can go to Sony developer site and have it unlocked for free after entering your imei number. When Sony do this they check that the imei is that of an unlockable device.
When sony chose to become developer friendly they allowed the unlocking of bootloader but because of agreements with networks they wouldn't unlock carrier locked devices. Hence when you go to service menu (phone dialer - *#*#7378423#*#*). You will see the status saying "unlockable bootloader= No."
Even if you unlock the sim lock on your phone it will NOT make your bootloader unlockable by the official Sony method.
So as an answer to OP 3UK phones will not have unlockable bootloader by official method unless for some reason they decide to provide sim free phone rather than their locked ones. WHICH I GUARANTEE THEY WONT.
It won't be the end of the world though, because afterall we are in a developer's site and some incredibly smart guys on this site will eventually be able to hack the bootloader for ALL DEVICES.

S-ON/OFF is HTC.
I am new and I found this out myself it isn't hard.
Sony Bootloaders decide if the phone is easily modified (ie. rooted, abled to flash roms/kernels easily). The Bootloaders are all locked from stock, and are "unlockable" depending on if your phone was from a carrier. Carriers determine if your bootloaders are locked, so the chances are if you purchased direct from a Carrier online shop then no, it will NOT be unlockable. Usually the case as I have read is that if the carrier usually SIMLOCKS the device, then it will be NOT unlockable. This is because the carrier already processed the phone and added the simlock etc.
Carphone on the other hand if you have bothered to Google. Usually sell unlocked/sim free stock. This is because the nature of how they work. They stock simfree stock because they will need to hold less stock since they don't need to hold X amounts for each network that way. Simfree stock means unlockable bootloader.
I currently with Three and on a monthly rolling contract which include the all you can eat data. Anyway I am currently using Sony Xperia V sim free phone and bootloader status is Bootloader Unlock allowed:Yes.
I currently looking to upgrade to Sony Xperia Z/ZL sim free. Yet I course I had to pay hundreds of pounds for the smartphone but I can change smartphone, unlock also I look to rooted locked which can be achieved as I do not want to break the BE or music download info in walkman etc. Also signing with contract phones with Three I think you three animation at boot time which I do not want, I can end the contract for another contract is another factor.
So you see some of the reason for choosing a monthly rolling contracts rather than 12/18 long contract you sign up for and no choice but to stick with it until the end of choice once signed on dotted line.
I think you find the Sony Xperia sim free smartphone bootloader are actually locked but you get a status bootloader unlock allowed:yes therefore you can and have to unlock it yourself.
It when you choose to buy these Sony Xperia phones on a 12/18 month contract that are locked and you get the bootloader status it cannot be unlocked as no.
My advice is choose monthly rolling contract with Three which I think is great.

Had a hard time reading your message but i skipped to the last 2 lines. No not all contracts are bootloader locked. Carphone have said and confirmed all phones sold by them (unless obviously stated) are unlocked sim free stock. This will mean you can buy any contract from them and the phone would be a sim free unlocked phone with the bootloader unlockable = yes.

WRONG/not entirely correct.
bootloader unlocking and rooting are different. Usually in most cases with xperia phones in the past a decent dev, -usually by the names of doomlord, bin4ry, or other usual suspects , find an exploit to root a certain firmware version, without the need to unlock bootloader. So whether that firmware is locked to 3 or is sim free is irrelevant. You should still be able to root, provided someone has been able to find the exploit.

Also as said already carphone warehouse sell sim free phones, however usually when they sell 3 branded contracts or pay as you go handset they in most cases locked to 3. It must be an agreement between 3 and carphone warehouse.

I'm talking more than just rooting. CM10 is a no no or any other rom without the bootloader unlocked.

Carrier unlocking

I am getting my xperia z tomorrow off eBay. Apparently it's locked to three UK. Now this clearly means that the boot loader is locked and at the moment not unlockable.
Hence I was wondering if I pay three the £15 unlock fee, how will this affect my boot loader status? Will it change to unlockable? Does Sony have a CID system similar to the HTC One X that will intervene with my ability to get timely updates from Sony (I.e. some HTC CIDs got jellybean a lot later than others)?
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
As stated in all such previous threads for every other Sony phone that gets released... Chances are, you will NOT be able to unlock the bootloader. That's why the international, non-carrier units from hong kong, Singapore, etc, are so popular.
Mine was locked to three and had it unlocked through them and the bootloader stays locked

You could just go to Carphone Warehouse, almost all their phones are unlocked sim free phones no matter what network or contract/payg you go with. Just ask to make sure before you buy (they occasionally have had locked ones from what they have told me before) and they will let you know, the Xperia Z will be unlocked as far as I know.

Unfortunately no Sony Store in the Toronto area has any unlocked phones in stock, or if they did they are hoarding them
Supposedly the stores will be getting their unlocked phones on Friday and stores are doing pre-orders now. This whole "launch" is pretty discouraging - as it seems like there are not that many phones available - my local store is only getting 4 black phones - I'm number 5 so won't be getting one until the end of October - which is when the next shipment is expected. I wasn't even told there was a pre-order system setup - even when I visited the store beforehand trying to get a glimpse of a display model. There wasn't any then, but there is one now - so my trip wasn't a total waste of time. Finally got a chance to see a working model.
Locked phones are available but seem to be selling slower - either that or they got more stock. Maybe Sony Canada didn't anticipate there would be demand for off-contract phones?
If anybody knows of any Toronto/GTA locations that still have open pre-orders I would like to know. A friend just picked up a Rogers locked one today.

I would advise against getting a Bell model - unless you're getting a discount. If you're paying the full price that Bell is asking for ($699 + tax), you might as well get the factory unlocked version directly from Sony for the same price. Rogers has the purple colour locked down if that's your preference, so only Black or White available from other sources.

Thing is, I've gotten pretty desperate. I contacted Bell and in order to be able to use the phone in the US, the carrier does need to unlock it. That's an added fee of 60 dollars from Bell. I also contacted a Sony store in Markham, ON and they said that the earliest I can get an unlocked one from them would be a month or so from now, or until their next shipment.

Just buy direct from Sony man - no need to pay extra for carrier unlock, and no carrier bloatware. Bell is selling it a $699, then you pay $60 to unlock, then there's the 13% Tax - that's about $860.
If you can't wait that long, see if you can get it from Rogers since they are selling it for $599 off-contract. At least you save a bit.
I myself will be getting it from my provider because hardware upgrade - picking one up tonight.

Alright - just got back home after fighting rush hour traffic from Yorkdale Mall.
This whole experience has seriously cast doubts as to whether I will ever purchase another new Sony phone again.
I have been given so much misinformation both over the phone and in person its getting ridiculous. It seems that they really want you to be physically at the store so that they can upsell you on other items - I was told over the phone that the box doesn't contain headphones, so that I should go there and pick out one or maybe even a bluetooth headset. All this when I just simply asked about the pre-order status.
The latest I have heard was that all stores are taking pre-orders and the warehouse will be shipping out units to the stores as they are placed. I had one salesperson tell me over the phone that the black unit was heavily back ordered (negative inventory), while the white was still available - only to get to the store and told that it doesn't matter - they're both backordered. They can't even guess at when I would be getting a phone. I was also told that the 18th was the official launch date and they weren't allowed to release the phones, which coincides with other info from this thread. The problem is that I was also told today that the Upper Canada Mall location had inventory since yesterday and they just sold the last one today!!! WTF? I've been told that I would get one next week, end of Oct. or even next month - this has all been extremely frustrating.
I really wish they would just allow you to pre-order online and have it shipped to the store like a normal retailer would.
AhsanU - if you want to put me in contact with your friend I can let them know when I receive my phones (2 on pre order), or ask them to get to the closest Sony store and just put down a deposit and hope for the best. Bell and Rogers are notorious for overcharging for everything, whereas Telus is a bit better, but they will all take advantage you given the chance. The unlocking fee is only supposed to be $50 but I'm not sure if they included the tax already. Why do they insist on locking the phones when you're either buying the phone outright or signing a contract that stipulates financial penalties when breaking said contract. In Asia, none of the phones are locked and companies actually compete with each other. I just hope there is a special place in hell for all these telecommunication executives...

I had pre-ordered two Z1's last week, both stores just called me today - one after the other >_<
If anybody is interested, I will have a black and white one in hand.
Just a word of warning - it states on the box that only the phone, USB and charger are included. It looks like the warning from Sony salespeople that no headphones are included is correct.
A bit OT, but when you anyone gets their hands on an unlocked Z1, can you extract the firmware? I'd love to flash it over my Rogers Z1.
Btw, the unit I got from Rogers (Wireless Wave) had headphones included.

Silly question -- C6906, correct?
That is correct. C6906 Unlocked. No headphones and no extra screen protector like I've seen on YouTube unboxings. So not only do I have the privelege of paying more for the phone, but I get less for it. Real classy Sony.
How do you go about extracting the Firmware? This will be my first Sony phone - I have been using HTC and Samsung phones prior. And how do you check if your bootloader is unlockable without actually unlocking it?

Ok - looks like I have 2 PMs asking about the Z1s - yes they are unlocked as I had pre-ordered that version last week.
I have not picked up the phones yet, but the stores have called me telling me that they are available and waiting for me.
Now I don't really have any particular aversion to shipping to the US - I presume you all want this model for the AT&T frequencies - but are you all certain that the C6903 won't work in your area? I have seen threads alluding to imported Z1s with working LTE on AT&T ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2476868 )
The reason why I hesitate to agree to shipping the phones out is due to the extra costs + custom fees? I will be charged tax on my purchase of the phone, so you are already looking at $791 CAD before any shipping costs. [Ontario has 13% sales tax]
Your best bet is to find somebody from Alberta - their sales tax for the Province is only 5%
To check boot loader unlock, type *#*#7348423#*#* on the dialler. Then go to
Service info > configuration > rooting status.
As far as extracting the rom, it's somewhere in the forum. I'll point you the link when i find it.

Looks like only the carrier unlocked versions have unlockable bootloaders. Rogers bootloader is locked.

Sony stores in Canada are in short supply of the 6906. Other option would be to buy one from Bell, Rogers or Telus and unlock it. Remember that the Carriers are boot loader locked and cannot be unlocked.
I grabbed the last one from the Niagara Falls store this morning.
Is the version on Sony store C6906. The specifications show c6902, no LTE. Please if you had the c6906 version on sony store let me know. Thanks

Yes, C6906 is what is sold in Canada.
All Canadian (for VANCOUVER at least) Xperia Z1 "06" has a bootloader LOCKED.Status says no for bootloader, few of my friends got it through carriers and one got it through sony store and all says the same.
If bootloader matters that much to you then dont get it through any carriers or even the sony stores.
If youre living in Vancouver and you want a "03" Z1 with LTE, you can head over to Lansdowne, called "Mobile DNA." Bought all my phones from them, and they are seling it for $701 CAD before tax. if you pay cash then you dont have to pay the tax.
I put in an order for the white Z1 at the Eaton's Centre last week. I called them today and they said they still have no ETA.

When I was at the Sony store looking for one, they said they had a waiting list and that Sony completely underestimated the demand for unlocked ones. I may just grab a Rogers one and be done with it.

But then you have to wait for rogers to push your OTA updates, that's the only reason I ordered the unlocked one.

Not really... If we can get someone to dump the stock firmware, we can flash that. Though I think bootloader will remain locked.
