any way to change what tiles are in the quick settings / notification pull-down tray? I'd like a vibrate/silent toggle there, but I cant find anything in the settings that would do that...

You need root to be able to change them. With root, you can use any of a number of different modules with the Xposed Framework app.

Linuxgator is right. Be rooted and installed Xposed Framework. Installing moduals like MotoXposed or GravityBox have great tile options + much more.

Try Control Center or similar app, no root required.
Control Center: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shere.easycontroller
I also find taskbar useful: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rootuninstaller.taskbarw8&feature=search_result

I use the four way slider lockscreen that is built in to android 4.1, but not the three shortcuts that come with it. Is there any way I could easily change the apps they correspond to as well as their icons?
Thanks

You could try a lock screen replacement. I've never used one but from the descriptions on the play store one of these might give you what you are looking for.

awesome, a couple of the magiclocker themes seem to be what i am looking for so i think i'll try those out!
I know that some ROM's like CM, AOSPA, and Carbon give you the ability to set 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, etc lockscreen patterns.
Does anybody know how to mod the stock lockscreen, or of any apk or way of doing this?
Thanks!

Try WidgetLocker Lockscreen. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker
Or here's a free one. Never tried it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=home.solo.plugin.locker
They may or may not mess up active notifications.

Those are targets for the slider. I'm talking about the unlock grid pattern. By default it is 3x3 dots. I would like to be able to make it 4x4 or 5x5.

No problem. I appreciate you trying to help!
I like the 4x4 grid because you can make the unlock pattern straight across. So its very easy to unlock (just like slide) but appears to be some difficult pattern.

xposed has a module for this, but it crashes on my phone (grand duos i9082L with stock 4.2.2)
Download Xposed Framework and download the sense 5 toolbox module. It has a bunch of awesome tweaks. You can even customize the new quick settings tiles on the new android 4.3.
Framework can be downloaded at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401

Gravity Box is for AOSP only. Also i'm sunning stock w/ goodies as well and everything is sticking for me. Sometimes the EQS can be a little weird but everything else is well.

Power toggles app > bottom(In attached screenshot). You can add more toggles(max:8) to Qsettings with Wanam xposed(LP) and edit texts, colors etc. Good luck.

Try no icon and use gesture (depending on the launcher). The rest of your screen is six icons across except the dock. For example I use down swipe gesture to expand notifications, up swipe to open app drawer (with animation set to open app drawer from bottom of the screen), double tap to sleep, two finger swipe for quick settings.

I downloaded that app, and even got SkyBlue. but it doesn't seem to be sticking once it asks me for a soft reset.
I just noticed that it themed my setting, but not my icons, background, etc.
NOTE: I seen somewhere I might need BusyBox?

Don't use the soft reboot. I always do a full reboot and it works and you shouldn't need busybox. I don't have it installed.

I use the advanced reboot in gravitybox but that requires Xposed. I don't know how you feel about that cause I know some people just hate it. You can also get an app like terminal emulator and type su to grant superuser then type reboot. There might also be an app in the play store that could do it but I don't use those. Someone else would have to suggest one of those.

It depends on who you ask. I say research it and try it if you want. Just make a backup right before you install it and you can restore that if you don't like it. But personally, I don't think it's as bad as some people say.
